The Christian Civic League of Maine's Mike Hein calls Pam's House Blend:
"a leading source of radical homosexual propaganda, anti-Christian bigotry, and radical transgender advocacy."

He is "praying that Pam Spaulding will "turn away from her wicked and sinful promotion of homosexual behavior." (CCLM's web site, 10/15/07)

Ex-gay "Christian" activist James Hartline on Pam:
"I have been mocked over and over again by ungodly and unprincipled anti-christian lesbians."
(from "Six Years In Sodom: From The Journal Of James Hartline," 9/4/2006, written from the "homosexual stronghold" of Hillcrest in San Diego).

"Pam is a 'twisted lesbian sister' and an 'embittered lesbian' of the 'self-imposed gutteral experiences of the gay ghetto.'" -- 9/5/2008

Peter LaBarbera of Americans for Truth Against Homosexuality heartily endorses the Blend, calling Pam:

A "vicious anti-Christian lesbian activist."
(Concerned Women for America's radio show [9:15], 1/25/07)

"A nutty lesbian blogger."
(MassResistance radio show [16:25], 2/3/07)

Pam's House Blend always seems to find these sick f*cks. The area of the country she is in? The home state of her wife? I know, they are everywhere. Pam just does such a great job of bringing them out into the light.

Another Sad Suicide...

by: Will St. James

Mon Apr 20, 2009 at 19:31:50 PM EDT

When are we going to start holding school administrators, state school boards, and state legislatures responsible for what to me amounts to child neglect?  If this were a parent who let this happen they would be sent to jail.

Jaheem Herrera
DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. (MyFOX Atlanta) - A DeKalb County mother discovers her fifth grade son dead. He used a belt to hang himself from a bedroom closet. The family said the boy was bullied by classmates.

The family of 11-year-old Jaheem Herrera is highly critical of Dunaire Elementary school officials. They said they repeatedly complained about harassment, but nothing was done.

Jaheem's mother, Masika Bermudez said she had complained to the Dunaire School principal that her child had been bullied -- harassed physically and verbally because he looked different and spoke with an accent.

Of course, the Fox news coverage here wouldn't degrade themselves by mentioning the word "gay", but other news outlets stated that the boy complained about being called gay and the mother confirmed this fact in a video interview (which I can't find posted yet).  Notice how the reporting made it sound like "generic" harassment.  No harassment of any kind should be tolerated, but withholding the true cause of the harassment does a disservice to the LGBT community when trying to convince the general public that this is a real issue.  Of course, it is sad state when we have to convince people in the first place.

How many more does it take?

NOTE FROM PAM: Here is the video:

Also, I want to re-share with you the interview I did with Chapel Hill High School senior Kat Gipson, who shared her personal story of being gay-bashed in school. In October of last year, I spoke to the Chapel Hill High GSA, and they were up-front about stories of bullying -- and lack of acceptance by religious conservative parents.

(My transcription below- Louise.)

Pam Spaulding: Tell me now, what was the incident that made you want to join the GSA?

Kat Gipson: When I was in tenth grade, I had a girlfriend and we had been dating for about 3 months. It was fine until, in the hallway I started getting comments- I would just hear them over my shoulder- quick words like, you know, like "effing lesbian", or "we don't need people like you at our school" or "you need to, like...". Just random things regarding my sexuality and threats.

I actually got a death threat at one point, right in front of the administrator's office, so every time I would turn around really quickly and no one would be there. Because it would be like, in a crowded hall of students, and I just wouldn't see anybody. Or I would see people walking away. And... so... this went on for awhile, about 2 weeks, and there were several incidents.

And then there was one day that I left a class early because I asked if I could go to the bathroom and my teacher said, "Just take your stuff and just go ahead" so it was right before the bell rang. And I was coming out of my bathroom, the bathroom, and I was walking this way. And as I was turning, I saw out of the corner of my eye, just figures, I mean they all had their hoods up and I was like, "Whatever"...

Pam Spaulding: The sweat hoodies?

Kat Gipson: "They're just coming out of class; it's not a big deal."

I turned and started walking down the hall and then I started hearing footsteps, like RUNNING, and I turned around really quick, and someone grabbed the side of my face, and slammed me into a locker, and I had a group of people around me, just pushing me, like continuously into a locker, saying stuff like, "Fag", "Lesbian", like, "Get out of our school", all these different things like...

I just curled up in a ball and covered up my head, because at that point I just didn't care who it was, right then. I was just like, "Don't hurt me". And then the bell rang. And they all just got up and ran down the hall.

And at that moment I was so terrified that I was shaking and I got my stuff- I got up and I went to my teacher, who I trusted alot, and told her. She took me immediately to Mr. Herseburger, and he took us directly to the security. The administrator didn't do anything, um, throughout the entire time, nothing-

Pam Spaudling: Did your parents speak to them?

Kat Gipson: My parents spoke to them; they came in and this was when I was, when I had to come out to my parents, because it was a legal issue. And so um, I did have to tell them, you know, "So, hi guys... A- I got beat up at school and B- I'm gay, by the way, that's why".

And so they came in- we had this huge conference, with like my counselors and the security guard. We looked over the surveillance tapes, um, we couldn't actually see- there wasn't a tape of them beating up, but we could see behind me in the hallways. And I would turn around really quickly. And I'd say, "Right there. Right there. That's the person." But we never caught their faces.

So this went on for 2 weeks, maybe, with people like reviewing tapes, and, but during this time my parents wrote several letters to the administration, came in several different times to talk to our head principal, who is no longer our principal, and um, nothing happened regarding that.

And after a little while, they had a police (officer) following me to my classrooms, at a distance, um, just to see if it happened again and it didn't. So after that, it just kinda faded away into nothing.

Pam Spaulding: And no one came forward to say that they did it, no one identified who had...

Kat Gipson: Nope, nope.

Pam Spaudling: And the investigation went nowhere.

And for folks out there, this is why we need an anti-bullying bill passed in this state.

Kat Gipson: Yes, yes.

Pam Spaulding: Thanks!

And conservatives are always saying -- "What about the children?" Well, yes, what about all of the fringe bible beaters who work to prevent anti-bullying bills from passing because of inclusive language that protects on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity?

In this video Kat also mentioned that she would like to move to Portland, Oregon once she's out of college; she doesn't feel that she can remain in this state, or in the South, for that matter, as long as states in this region don't legislate full civil equality for LGBTs. Some of the best and brightest will choose to migrate to states where their full rights and relationships are recognized. That is a bottom-line reality that our state government needs to think hard about. Is this what mainstream conservatives really want? I know it's what the fundies desire.

In NC, the School Violence Prevention Act is being considered and will hopefully pass this time around; North Carolinians can urge support of its passage here at Equality NC. All schools need to be safe places for all children to learn.

Very Sad indeed,
I was going to post this this evening but I see did it first.  I was going to include a few things.  The first is from GLSEN from October 2005 titled From Teasing to Torment: School Climate in America - A National Report on School Bullying  3 1/2 years ago this was written and still the religious right organizations put up a fuss over the Day of Silence.  This is about saving children's lives.  But to hear the religious organizations tell it, it is only about pushing the homosexual agenda.

3 1/2 years since this was printed by GLSEN.  I am glad to say that it has helped in many communities and school districts.  But look where the resistance is coming from.  And they call themselves the pro-life groups, Bull Shit.

If I make sense? it was quite by accident.

depressing
between these young children ending their lives and the angie zapata murder trial..its a sad few weeks.  i hope some good can finally come of this by making people realize bullying is not just some normal rite of passage but something that affects young childrens' psyche deeply and causes actions like these

Try not. Do or do not. There is no try.

These sorts of suicide stories
involving "clean-cut, all American kids" are the ones that get the most publicity- think we'll EVER see a major publication do a 6 page story of GLBTQ kids with documentation from the GLSEN link HappyCat provided?

Cops should get a hard step
I think in this case the little boy is harassed by someone other and police should strictly investigate this case. I hope the murderer will be in lockup and mother will get the justice.

GA Bully Law ineffective
Here is the Anti-Bullying law here in GA. Notice that it is valid only for physical attacks or implied physical attacks. Also note that it only applys to 6th grade through 12th grade. So a 5th Grader is not protected. There was a more comprehensive bill in the GA legislature this year, but did not make it through the process.

The Georgia Bullying Law

O.C.G.A. 20-2-751.4

(a) As used in this Code section, the term "bullying" means:

(1) Any willful attempt or threat to inflict injury on another person, when accompanied by an apparent present ability to do so; or

(2) Any intentional display of force such as would give the victim reason to fear or expect immediate bodily harm.

(b) Each local board of education shall adopt policies, applicable to students in grades six through 12, that prohibit bullying of a student by another student and shall require such prohibition to be included in the student code of conduct for middle and high schools in that school system. Local board policies shall require that, upon a finding that a student has committed the offense of bullying for the third time in a school year, such student shall be assigned to an alternative school. Each local board of education shall ensure that students and parents of students are notified of the prohibition against bullying, and the penalties for violating the prohibition, by posting such information at each middle and high school and by including such information in student and parent handbooks.

(c) Any school system which is not in compliance with the requirements of this Code section shall be ineligible to receive state funding pursuant to Code Sections 20-2-161 and 20-2-260.

Here is the link to the Dekalb County Code of Student Conduct:  http://www.dekalb.k12.ga.us/ad...

And the section for Bullying reads:

BULLYING
State law prohibits bullying. State law mandates a discipline hearing after the third incident of bullying with a referral to an alternative school setting upon a finding of guilt (O.C.G.A. 20-2-145). The DeKalb School System will not tolerate bullying and other forms of harassment and, therefore, reserves the right to punish students after the first incident and upon a finding of guilt. Such punishment may include suspension, expulsion, or a referral to an alternative school. Please note: Any form of electronic bullying (cyberbullying) using school equipment, school networks, e-mail systems or committed at school is strictly prohibited.

So, again, a 5th grader is not covered.

And here is the "Complaint Procedure" that is supposed to be followed .

COMPLAINT PROCEDURES FOR STUDENTS
Pursuant to federal and state laws, students are entitled to a complaint procedure to address allegations of discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex (including, but not limited to sexual harassment), disability, harassment and/or bullying. Both informal and formal resolution processes are available to address any complaints arising out of the above-described categories. Allegations of discrimination should be immediately reported to an administrator or counselor at the school, center or any school event. However, a student may make a direct report to the Title IX Officer at 3770 North Decatur Rd., Decatur, Georgia 30032-1099 or by dialing (678-676-0181). The Local Administrator or the Title IX Coordinator shall assist the student with formalizing and processing the complaint, which should include a statement of facts, identification of witnesses and any other information necessary to fully describe the matter. Formal complaints should be filed within thirty (30) calendar days of the alleged incident. All policies and/or procedures mandated by any agency of the State of Georgia will be followed. Students are prohibited against falsifying, misrepresenting, omitting or erroneously reporting information regarding instances of alleged inappropriate behavior by a teacher, administrator or other school employee.

So it looks like Georgia Elementary students are SOL.

Comments from the WSB-TV story
These were some of the comments about the school from other parents/ students.

MY SON WAS A STUDENT AT DUNAIRE ELEMENTARY AND WAS BEING BULLIED DAILY. I WENT TO THE SCHOOL ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS AND CONFRONTED DR. THOMPSON ONLY TO RECEIVE UNSATISFIED RESPONSES. SHE SUSPENDED MY SON FOR DEFENDING HIMSELF FIVE TIMES. I TOLD HER THE NEXT TIME THAT LITTLE BOY TOUCHED MY SON I WOULD BRING DEKALB COUNTY POLICE WITH ME. I WROTE THE BOARD AND LET THEM KNOW MY SON WOULD NOT BE ATTENDING THAT SCHOOL ANYMORE. HE NOW GOES TO ANOTHER SCHOOL AND IS PERFORMING WELL. IF YOUR CHILD IS BEING BULLIED MOVE THEM BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE. DUNAIRE ELEMENTARY DOES NOT CARE.

My child attends Dunaire Elementary...From the very beginning she didn't like it! She came from another elementary school where the students where respectful and in school to learn..Some of the students @ Dunaire is a different breed...My daughter had some issues with Bullying on the bus which led to me and the other parent getting into a verbal altercation. I went to the school to discuss what happened because the little boy put his hands on my daughter and I felt something should be done...I also advised the school that the Parent was using a relatives address to attend the school because the students don't ride the bus in the morning and when the children ride the bus home the mother is waiting in the car and they leave! The students were all called to the office and the little boys threatened her in front of the Principal they were suspended for 2 days and that was the end of it! I called the police so the lady has control of her lil bullies when it comes to my children. I told the principal that I had to call the police after they got off the bus after the suspension she said to me "Well I hope ya'll work it out"! I feel for this family and I sent out my condolences and prayers to them. I talked to my children about it they understand what has happened and why it is important not to judge and project their own opinions to others because their opinion is not always needed. Im so sad for the sibling my heart goes out to the Mother I couldn't imagine such a loss!

Thank you, Will St. James for the information.
I try to impress on Texas legislators the destruction caused by bullying in public schools and the need for better legislation to address and prevent this problem.

Pam's article 'Getting Real' About Bullying-Related Suicides (posted April 17th) helped bolster my discussion and information packet given to Texas State Senator Wendy Davis at her townhall meeting April 18th in Burleson, Texas.

The information in your article (and Pam's) went in my email today to Texas State Representative Chris Turner to reinforce the need for passage of anti-bullying and harassment bills. Great timing on your part.

Texas House Bill 1323, related to bullying and harassment, should go to the floor of the Texas House soon, and Texas Equality's website has information and a letter set up that Texans can send to their representatives. I hope the politicians in Austin get an overwhelming response.

Best wishes...
Cathy Cat with the Texas Bill.  I'm wondering myself which of our national organizations are tackling this issue 24/7 and aggregating these horrific stories.  Seems that the more information that is available the quicker we can cut off the so called "compassionate Christians" when they oppose Anti-Bullying Bills.

When They're This Young
My nephew is 14 now, and in the hospital now for cutting himself. He's also been beaten up. The thing is he doesn't identify as gay, which makes it awkward. Because frankly he's a walking stereotype. Even the nurse asked if he was gay.

And at a 11...I mean, these boys might just be behind in puberty is all and not even gay.

It's so messed up, when I was a kid I didn't know what gay was because people just didn't talk about it. And obviously these kids that are doing the bullying aren't learning about gay people from gay people, but from the homophobes that didn't want their kids to know about gay people in the first place.

Americam society is starting
to resemble a bad splatter flick. The body count just keeps mounting.  And not only is that what the fundies want (as long as the bodies are LGBT, of course) but the people in authority--police, principals, lawmakers--don't seem to be bothered by it.

Thanks to the right wing, any lunatic who wants a gun can get one with no trouble.  People, including children, are free to harass others to the point of self-slaughter.  Wes Craven at his edgiest could not imagine a society as hideous as ours is fast becoming.

Oh, wait.  This is the greatest country in the world.  That's right.  I forgot myself for a moment.  Forget I said anything.

Cynic, n.  A blackguard whose faulty vision sees things as they are, not as they ought to be.
-Bierce, The Devil's Dictionary

Goethe's The Sorrows of Young Werther
That book brought on a "vogue" in teenage suicides in the 19th century.

from wiki

One of the earliest known associations between the media and suicide arose from Goethe's novel Die Leiden des jungen Werthers (The Sorrows of Young Werther), published in 1774. In that work the hero shoots himself after an ill-fated love, and shortly after its publication there were many reports of young men using the same method to commit suicide. This resulted in a ban of the book in several places. Hence the term "Werther effect", used in the technical literature to designate copycat suicides.[2] The term was coined by researcher David Phillips in 1974. [3] Copycat suicide is mostly blamed on the media.

I hope we are not beginning to see a similar effect with these suicides.
