The Christian Civic League of Maine's Mike Hein calls Pam's House Blend:
"a leading source of radical homosexual propaganda, anti-Christian bigotry, and radical transgender advocacy."

He is "praying that Pam Spaulding will "turn away from her wicked and sinful promotion of homosexual behavior." (CCLM's web site, 10/15/07)

Ex-gay "Christian" activist James Hartline on Pam:
"I have been mocked over and over again by ungodly and unprincipled anti-christian lesbians."
(from "Six Years In Sodom: From The Journal Of James Hartline," 9/4/2006, written from the "homosexual stronghold" of Hillcrest in San Diego).

"Pam is a 'twisted lesbian sister' and an 'embittered lesbian' of the 'self-imposed gutteral experiences of the gay ghetto.'" -- 9/5/2008

Peter LaBarbera of Americans for Truth Against Homosexuality heartily endorses the Blend, calling Pam:

A "vicious anti-Christian lesbian activist."
(Concerned Women for America's radio show [9:15], 1/25/07)

"A nutty lesbian blogger."
(MassResistance radio show [16:25], 2/3/07)

Pam's House Blend always seems to find these sick f*cks. The area of the country she is in? The home state of her wife? I know, they are everywhere. Pam just does such a great job of bringing them out into the light.

Breaking: Senator Specter To Switch Parties

by: Autumn Sandeen

Tue Apr 28, 2009 at 12:25:39 PM EDT

UPDATE: Freeper reaction below the fold.

From the New York Times:

Senator Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania said he would switch to the Democratic party Tuesday, potentially presenting Democrats with a possible 60th vote and the power to break Senate filibusters as they try to advance the Obama administration's new agenda.

Congressional aides and others close to the long-time Republican party maverick said Mr. Specter, who faced a difficult re-election next year, was going to announce he would become a Democrat.

If Al Franken prevails in his ongoing court case in Minnesota and Mr. Specter begins caucusing with Democrats, Democrats would have 60 votes and the ability to deny Republicans the chance to stall legislation. Mr. Specter was one of only three Republicans to support President Obama's economic recovery legislation.

Democrat leaders expressed their enthusiasm. President Obama was handed a note from an aide at 10:25 a.m. on Tuesday during his daily economic briefing. The note, according to a senior administration official, said: "Specter is announcing he is changing parties." ...

NOTE FROM PAM: Boy the Republican brand really sucks big time, doesn't it? How many rats are going to jump ship? Here's the EPIC FAIL reaction from RNC chair Michael Steele:
"Some in the Republican Party are happy about this. I am not.

Let's be honest-Senator Specter didn't leave the GOP based on principles of any kind. He left to further his personal political interests because he knew that he was going to lose a Republican primary due to his left-wing voting record.

Republicans look forward to beating Sen. Specter in 2010, assuming the Democrats don't do it first."

And rubbing it in at the White House...
Obama 'thrilled to have' Specter

President Barack Obama talked to Sen. Arlen Specter at 10:32 this morning from the Oval Office, said Dems are "thrilled to have you," according to a White House aide.

Obama was informed of Specter's decision to switch parties at 10:25 this morning while receiving his daily economic briefing in the Oval Office, according to a White House official.

BTW, Specter's full statement is below the fold, as well as Freeper reaction.
Autumn Sandeen :: Breaking: Senator Specter To Switch Parties
Here is his statement:
April 28, 2009

Statement by Senator Arlen Specter

I have been a Republican since 1966. I have been working extremely hard for the Party, for its candidates and for the ideals of a Republican Party whose tent is big enough to welcome diverse points of view. While I have been comfortable being a Republican, my Party has not defined who I am. I have taken each issue one at a time and have exercised independent judgment to do what I thought was best for Pennsylvania and the nation.

Since my election in 1980, as part of the Reagan Big Tent, the Republican Party has moved far to the right. Last year, more than 200,000 Republicans in Pennsylvania changed their registration to become Democrats. I now find my political philosophy more in line with Democrats than Republicans.

When I supported the stimulus package, I knew that it would not be popular with the Republican Party. But, I saw the stimulus as necessary to lessen the risk of a far more serious recession than we are now experiencing.

Since then, I have traveled the State, talked to Republican leaders and office-holders and my supporters and I have carefully examined public opinion. It has become clear to me that the stimulus vote caused a schism which makes our differences irreconcilable. On this state of the record, I am unwilling to have my twenty-nine year Senate record judged by the Pennsylvania Republican primary electorate. I have not represented the Republican Party. I have represented the people of Pennsylvania.

I have decided to run for re-election in 2010 in the Democratic primary.

I am ready, willing and anxious to take on all comers and have my candidacy for re-election determined in a general election.

I deeply regret that I will be disappointing many friends and supporters. I can understand their disappointment. I am also disappointed that so many in the Party I have worked for for more than four decades do not want me to be their candidate. It is very painful on both sides. I thank specially Senators McConnell and Cornyn for their forbearance.

I am not making this decision because there are no important and interesting opportunities outside the Senate. I take on this complicated run for re-election because I am deeply concerned about the future of our country and I believe I have a significant contribution to make on many of the key issues of the day, especially medical research. NIH funding has saved or lengthened thousands of lives, including mine, and much more needs to be done. And my seniority is very important to continue to bring important projects vital to Pennsylvania's economy.

I am taking this action now because there are fewer than thirteen months to the 2010 Pennsylvania Primary and there is much to be done in preparation for that election. Upon request, I will return campaign contributions contributed during this cycle.

While each member of the Senate caucuses with his Party, what each of us hopes to accomplish is distinct from his party affiliation. The American people do not care which Party solves the problems confronting our nation. And no Senator, no matter how loyal he is to his Party, should or would put party loyalty above his duty to the state and nation.

My change in party affiliation does not mean that I will be a party-line voter any more for the Democrats that I have been for the Republicans. Unlike Senator Jeffords' switch which changed party control, I will not be an automatic 60th vote for cloture. For example, my position on Employees Free Choice (Card Check) will not change.

Whatever my party affiliation, I will continue to be guided by President Kennedy's statement that sometimes Party asks too much. When it does, I will continue my independent voting and follow my conscience on what I think is best for Pennsylvania and America.

And what are they saying in the swamps?

Actual Freeper Quotes

I hope he's as big a pain in the ass to the Dems as he was to the GOP.

Thanks for nothing, Arlen!

No, no, no!! This is GREAT news for conservatives!! :-) 2010 is just around the corner. Big changes will be coming as liberal extremists like Arlen Specter will get voted out of congress!! The bottom line is that everyone has a wallet, and all this taxing and spending will be in full force come election time! Kiss most of the dems in congress goodbye then!

I'm not too concerned about it. The democrats already had a fillibuster proof majority with Specter on "our" side.

All three of them (Snowe, Collins and Specter) have no conservative values anyway. If they were honest, they never would have run as Republicans to begin with. Dishonesty abounds in Washington from the president on down.

Didn't make any difference: the Dems were willing to prostitute the "reconciliation" procedures to pass legislation with a simple majority, and as far as confirmations go, the stinking RINOs in the Senate have a habit of rolling over anyway. We made this situation inevitable as long as we tolerated Bush's "big government" pseudo-conservatism and the Republicans' K-Street corruption racket.

Crap?? - this is great! We get rid of a RINO and send him as a DINO into the enemy camp. This now 'cleanses' the way for more conservatives. I hope McCain goes too!

He saw that he was far behind Toomey, and made a deal with Obama and Fast Eddie. This is a smart thing to do from his point of view. He'd have had far more credibility had he'd stayed indie like Lieberman. Now he just looks like he 's trying to save his ass. Oh well, at least he help get Alito and Roberts through. Give him that much.

And then we can have real elections ... Have you noticed how the progressives straddle the aisle. Won't be long now, before we wonder where the Constitution went, and how we let it slip away. It's time to out them for what they are, progressives who want to destroy the Constitution. Most Americans do not live their lives the way the progressives want them to, and don't intend to change.

So, I apologize for my ignorance, but does that occur TODAY, or do we wait until 2010? Seems kind of shady a man can run as a (R) and then change midstream and serve as a (D)....<>Oh wait, I guess he was doing that already....Hmmmm

And how much money did the G.O.P. give to this bastard to help him get re-elected?
Not to mention G.W. Bush helping to get his sorry butt re-elected, nice going G.W., not that we needed another REAL republican.

Nothing is filibuster proof. Truth is not all democrats feel thrilled about what us going on in the country. No guarantee that Arlen will even be around next time. He knew he would lose to Toomey so he is trying to find a place to hide. Won't work with those who supported him the first time. Won't work with the lefties who didn't support him last time

Whether the Dems have a filibuster-proof majority or not doesn't matter. Does anybody believe that the Republicans in the Senate would ever have had the motivation or the guts actually to employ a real filibuster? The answer isn't no, it's HELL no.

Et tu, Sphincter? Useless traitor and backstabber

It's irrelevant. He's not switching parties since we only have a one socialist Republicrat party system.

Curb your enthusiasm. A filibuster-proof Senate working with Obama will be able to do a great deal of damage to the Republic before the new Congress is seated in 2011. It is waaay too early to celebrate. Specter has always been a worm, and the biggest mistake Bush made was making sure he got re-elected the last time. This sucks for several different reasons.

What took you so long, Judas?

Great news! Remove the cancer grow the party...

Specter's always been a....well....lady of easy virtue (don't wanna get banned for using more direct terms). As of today he's officially "out of the closet".Ira Einhorn's best buddy on earth is an excellent fit for today's RAT Party.

I'm increasingly convinced that the powers that be will have martial law in place before that election-and possibly WWIII. Will be interesting to see if they allow it, or not.

The GOP gave this man thousands of dollars to run as a republican. They stood up for him, helped him when he needed it, and how does he repay them now? Defection. This just goes to show that Spector was never in "it" for the people, he was in it for himself. Now the voters of PA have to finally vote him out of office once and for all. Anyone know how this will play out? Does he have a chance of re-election as a socialist?

Now the Dems will be able to pass their hard leftwing spending bills with impunity! Oh wait, they could do that before with an R beside Specter's name.

Arlen is a perfect example of a RAT leaving a sinking ship.

Curb your pessimism a little too...If this country is so far gone that we can't get enough conservatives and independents to take the country back after Obambi gets through then it just doesn't matter. Specter was always a democrat now he has to run as one. Don't think the dems in Penn. are just going to lay down for him he very well may split the liberal vote and get the pub elected.

It's also worth noting that Specter is an old man -- so the 2010 election might very well be his last. Good riddance to the old f#cker.

Listen, restoring the conservative mantle is the first step in restoring party credibility for the Republicans. They should actively seek to purge their ranks of Schwarzeneger, McCain, Spectre, Snowe and Collins for starters. If they could get rid of all of these and replace them with real conservatives, that'd be a real plus. Next, they need a real public mia copa on the spending of the Bush administration and they need to promise not to ever do it again. Finally, they need real leadership. Right now, all I see is the second tier ranks of supporters. A real leader must emerge. Once that happens, the brand can be reintroduced. Incidentally, that'll be about the time Americans will be fed up with Obama and the socialists. If all of this can be accomplished in three years, then Barry will be the one term affirmative action realization and demise.

This is fantastic news
What is Specter's record on LGBT issues, does anyone know?

He's "moderate"

Sorry for the cussin' Q :)
I looked it up, it is a mixed record.

And we all know there are a few of those in the Dems. Like a certain NY State Senator...

Looking for a few minutes
I find he cosponsored ENDA, at least in the 107th Congress around 2001, and cosponsored the Matthew Shepard / Hate Crimes bill last year.

Promising?

[ Parent ]
RIH GOP
I see dead people.  I also see more Repugs swiching parties to save their political careers.

I see this too
and unfortunately, I don't see them having epiphanies on the way across the aisle, which means the more who switch sides, the more the Democratic party is going to be skewed to the right.

[ Parent ]
Political evolution
But it's the non-right-wingnuts who are defecting!  In my view, there is nothing wrong with many viewpoints in a particular political party.  That's what the Repubs DON'T have anymore!  I really liked someone's comment I read on a different blog about this story, and I paraphrase: We need two political parties.  One of them shouldn't be run by crazy people.

What we are seeing is the evolution of a large diverse national party and the devolution of an increasingly smaller regional party.  What's particularly eerie about this is that Mr Obama seems to be channeling Mr Lincoln a lot of the time and the present-day Repubs (rapidly becoming the Southern Old White Men's Party) seem determined to fight the "War of Northern Aggression" (they still call it that in some places, some of my southern friends tell me) all over again!

[ Parent ]
OH NO!
Those damn liberals and their homosexual agenda, their freedom of choice, their freedom FROM religion, Nancy Pelosi, Bill Clinton and teabagging!

Sweet
This can only be a good thing in the long run. I would think that anyone who's interested in LGBT rights would be VERY interested in this story, regardless of the senator's views on SSM.

It's about time
Specter's been out of alignment with "GOP values" for quite some time. He belongs in the Democratic Party. He is more popular with democrats than republicans and was going to lose the primary. So...it looks like I'll be voting for him next year....that'll be a first.

I've never voted for Specter
despite his "moderate" credentials.  I've never been able to forgive him for what he did to Anita Hill--which led more or less directly to Clarence Thomas being confirmed for the SC.  But this move may have me rethinking.  (I only say may.  Let's see how he votes.)

Cynic, n.  A blackguard whose faulty vision sees things as they are, not as they ought to be.

[ Parent ]
yeah, but Joe Biden was there
with all that Anita Hill stuff too.

Of course, if wasn't for a certain eggheaded Illinois senator (so the rumor goes) we may have never heard of Anita Hill at all.

I'm a Big Paul Simon fan. That paved the way for Carol Mosley Braun which really paved the way for Obama.

[ Parent ]
Simon was great!
And he's missed.  I would get a Christmas card from him every year, even after he left the senate.

[ Parent ]
Specter on the issues
From what I can tell, Specter is for the hate crimes bill and ENDA and for overturning DOMA. He takes Obama's position as far as SSM (CUs and not marriage equality)

He is scored a 67 by the HRC.

http://www.ontheissues.org/Sen...

That sound you hear
is the blood gushing out from the aftermath of the countless aneurysms that just took place in John Cornyn's brain.

>^..^<

Just like the rest of PA
Arlen Specter is turning blue.

I wonder what sort of challenge he would face in a Democratic primary?

The Democrats have a lot of damage to undo, and it will surely help that process to have a 60 vote majority in the Senate, so this is good news.  Even so, it's not good to have one party in complete control for long.  The Republicans will soon have to ditch the blatant homophobes just like they ditched the blatant racists if they want to be anything more than a permanent minority party.  Eventually it will be -- even in the Deep South -- more socially acceptable to be gay than to be a homophobe.

I'm sure there were deals and promises made
Specter's not gonna get Judiciary back but I bet he gets shoved to the front of the line for another major committee chair.  I also suspect he will face NO primary opponent.  I'm troubled by his insistence on not supporting EFCA but, hey, just less than TWO months ago he was swearing he would remain a Republican.  Minds can always be changed for political expediency and survival.  (Not saying this is a bad thing -- politix is politix.)

[ Parent ]
I suspect he'll be shifting to the left
Some of Specter's votes may have been part of towing the party line. I think he's fairly conservative in foreign affairs but quite liberal on social issues. We'll see. This will be very interesting.

And I agree, there will likely be no primary opponent. If there is one it will be a fringe left candidate with no party support and little funding. Specter will win easily.

[ Parent ]
I've been saying for years...
That the GOP swing to the right would eventually alienate sane people-also known as moderates-and force them to leave the party. I highly suspect this is just the beginning. I don't know if we'll see any more moderate senators leave the GOP, but let's remember that new Zogby poll that shows 21 percent of the electorate identifying as Republican. If they keep listening to Limpballs, Beck, and Palin, the GOP as we know it will be dead. Let's hope so.

[ Parent ]
Indeed, Mindyinlongbeach
What used to be called "Rockefeller Republicans" (moderate Rs mostly from the Northeast in the House or Senate) have been already leaving the party or have been replaced by real Democrats.  As for the remaining two "moderate" GOP senators -- Louise, I know you have something else to do today [smile] but if you read this please correct me if I have it wrong -- it seems party doesn't make as much of a diff in ME as it does in PA.  Voters tend to vote for a candidate they like more than voting for their party.

[ Parent ]
Yeah, but the moderates are tired of being pushed around
By the usual suspects along with the Talibangicals. I suspect Olympia Snowe might be next-if SPECTER can switch parties, I wouldn't doubt Olympia would. She strikes me as a pretty strong woman who doesn't like being pushed around-which doesn't explain WHY she's stuck around the GOP for as long as she has.

[ Parent ]
Maybe Ms Snowe is just strong AND stubborn
and has hoped the R party would come back to its senses.  Maybe she's just the last of that soon-to-be-extinct breed of northeast Repubs who were "fiscally conservative, socially moderate/liberal".  My point was only that she would not HAVE to change parties to stay in office, whereas it looks pretty obvious that Mr Specter's move was necessary to quite literally save his ... (Senate) seat.

[ Parent ]
Agreed!
Yup. Arlen's doing this to save his assets, and nothing more, really. He's been more or less socially moderate to liberal and fiscally conservative most of his career, which is why he had a strong challenge from the right in the GOP primary. I don't think it'll work, however. Obama's not a stupid guy-he knows he can't trust Arlen to tow the party line, and I don't think he'll ask him to-but I do think Arlen will get a challenge from the left in the Dem primary. As for Olympia,
I think she knows damn good and well by now that the GOP isn't coming back to it's senses any time soon. That's why I suspect Snowe's next.

[ Parent ]
We're on the same page
Just an aside, I'd forgotten that Specter used to be a Demo before he became a Repub in the 60s.  I think he is more independent than partisans of either side are comfortable with.  I sure don't agree with him all the time -- eg Anita Hill/Clarence Thomas episode, non-support of EFCA despite labor's support of him in previous elections -- but I think he's been on "our" side more often than not (again, someone from PA let me know if I'm off base here).  It won't matter if he's on our side or not if he's not in office.  Still, a gentle push from the left (either in a Demo primary or deals made to avoid same) would be a fine idea.

As for Ms Snowe, I do hope you're right, because we're all going to get old and gray (those of us who ain't already!) before Al Franken finally gets to Washington.

[ Parent ]
They've been pushed around for eight years
Snow, Collins, and Spector made moderate noises during the Bush years but almost always caved. Perhaps it's because they fear for their survival.

They are--even as wishy-washy as at the present-- dinosaurs.  They will go the way of Jake Javitts and John Lindsay and Nelson Rockefeller, and some day parents will start stories with, "Once upon a time, when there were progressive Republicans in the Northeast...."

Joe Scarborough = crickets? Hopefully?
Hopefully this will shut Joe Scarborough the f*ck up with his orgasmic comparisons of 2009's Dem Prez + Congress to 1993-94 Dem Prez + Congress.

'The Dems overreached then; we overreached when we took over; and the Dems are overreaching now,' he typically blathers.

One problem...

I don't recall any significant Clinton coattails or any defections to the Democrats once Clinton was in.  In fact, as I recall, almost as soon as Clinton was elected, some Dems started defecting to the Repubs.

Oh...

And I don't recall the Dems ever being at 21%.

21 is good in Blackjack.

In politics?  Not so much.

Joe?  Start cozying up to Caribou Boopsie and maybe she'll make you the Boy Toy of her 2012 ticket.

Even then, though, you won't be relevant.

I wonder what Holy
Joe will do know.  That's the first person who came to mind when I heard this.  Anyone think Lieberman will leave the Dems?  It might not make sense in CT, but his hubris know no bounds.

Electricity's for light bulbs!

He already left.
Joe Lieberman caucuses with the D's, but officially, he's an "I" ... which is sort of where I would have expected Specter to go as well.

What's Sen. Spector's position on S P A M ?

[ Parent ]
Makes my day!
Ah, yes.  Pennsylvania is making me happy this week:

* Pennsylvania's Rep. Mark Cohen (D-Philly) is set to introduce medical marijuana there, which is polling around 65% statewide support.

* Now I get Sen. Specter turning Democrat and giving President Obama 60 votes in the Senate on many issues.

* Today he says, "I believe I have a significant contribution to make on many of the key issues of the day, especially medical research. NIH funding has saved or lengthened thousands of lives, including mine, and much more needs to be done."

* And last year, he said, "If it were legalized in Pennsylvania and if I were in pain and my doctor prescribed it, then yes, absolutely I would," he told me. When I asked if he would consider sparking up without it being legalized, I'd swear there was a brief smile before the senator said he was "certainly not about to say I would violate the law." http://tr.im/jWc6

Oh, a cancer-surviving, medical-marijuana supporting senator who has seniority, whose state is pushing for a medical marijuana law, and wants to make a contribution to medical research!  I like it!

NRSC's Cornyn left twisting in the PR wind over Specter
This on April 14:
National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman John Cornyn released a letter today offering a full-throated endorsement of Sen. Arlen Specter in his coming primary against former congressman Pat Toomey, a decision driven by a concern that the challenger cannot win a general election in Pennsylvania.

"My job as head of the NRSC is to guide the GOP back to a majority in the Senate," wrote Cornyn in a letter to Pennsylvania Republicans. "I can't do that without Arlen Specter. With him as our nominee, I can target our campaign resources toward beating Democrats and growing the Senate Republican Conference."

...and today:
WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX), Chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), issued the following statement today regarding U.S. Senator Arlen Specter's (R-PA) decision to switch political parties in the face of a seemingly insurmountable bid for re-election next year:

"Senator Specter's decision today represents the height of political self-preservation. While this presents a short-term disappointment, voters next year will have a clear choice to cast their ballots for a potentially unbridled Democrat super-majority versus the system of checks-and-balances that Americans deserve."

Washington, DC - Today, the Stonewall Democrats released the following statement on the announcement of the intention of Senator Arlen Specter (PA) to join the Democratic Party:

"Stonewall Democrats welcomes Senator Arlen Specter to the Democratic Party.  As evidenced by his statement, a key factor in Senator Specter's decision to leave the Republican Party was change in political attitudes of Pennsylvanians - a change ushered in with the help of Stonewall Democrats in Pennsylvania and chapters such as the Steel City Stonewall Democrats, Capital Region Stonewall Democrats and the Liberty City Democratic Club.

Stonewall Democrats across the country now have a role to help shape and hold accountable Senator Specter on pro-equality legislation before the U.S. Senate.  These legislative efforts include fully-inclusive employment non-discrimination legislation, employee free choice, fully-inclusive hate crimes legislation, family and relationship recognition for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Americans, healthcare reform that reflects the needs of LGBT people, immigration equality, and other pieces of legislation to bring full equality under the law for all Americans.

Being a Democrat is about more than selecting a political affiliation or having to get through a primary election to win public office.  Being a Democrat means upholding the basic American ideals that all people should be treated fairly, every one of us should have an equal opportunity to succeed, and that government has the power help people help themselves.
We hope the reexamination of Senator Specter's political affiliation will serve as a wake-up call to the Republican Party.  The wedge issues that many Republicans have used in the past are not the politics of the future."

- Jon Hoadley, Executive Director, Stonewall Democrats

Good Move, Senator Specter
The GOP has gone so far to the right, it not only fell off the page, it gunned the engine and sped off the cliff!

Thelma & Louise
So are you saying the republicans are pulling a "Thelma & Louise"? LOL

Freepi: "Arlen is a perfect example of a RAT leaving a sinking ship."
Did you say that about Ben Nighthorse Campbell when he jumped from D to R?

What about Phil 'UBS' Gramm?

>^..^<

Learned from...
....Chafee's mistakes?

RINO
They keep calling these former republicans "RINO" (republican in name only) - how does one become a RINO, anyway?  Refusing to titillate republican men with stories of homosex, in graphic detail?

Hard right, that is a winning strategy,
I hope the GOP puts hard right wingers up for every seat.  Let Hannity and Limbaugh stay in charge.  And then watch the reaction come 2010.

Hannity and Limbaugh will not shut up or change their tune.  Mr. Steele, who I still believe his days are numbered,  (I haven't forgot Pollyanna) knows the direction the republican party needs to go to regain power.  Megen McCain has said enough with the old school republicans.  But as long as Hannity and Limbaugh are on the radio, the republican party is stuck. They won't be able to shake them loose.

And lets not forget, Darth Vader, Newt Gingrich, Karl Rove, they just wont go away either.

If I make sense? it was quite by accident.

DNC rubs it in...
More rubbing it in, this time from the DNC:
DNC Chairman Tim Kaine Welcomes Arlen Specter to Democratic Party with "Open Arms,"  Praises Senator's Ongoing Support for President's Efforts to Turn Economy Around

Specter Switch, Election of Scott Murphy in Republican Leaning Congressional District in New York, Shows Republican Party Has Lost Touch with the American People, Kaine Says

Washington, D.C. - Democratic National Committee Chairman Tim Kaine issued the following statement on Senator Arlen Specter's decision to join the Democratic Party and work with Senate Democrats to achieve the President's vision for a strong and growing economy.

"I am pleased to offer Senator Specter my sincere congratulations on his decision to join the Democratic Party and I welcome him with open arms," said DNC Chairman Kaine.  "Over nearly three decades in the United States Senate, Senator Specter has represented the people of Pennsylvania with honor, conviction, and an allegiance to deeply held principles that I know will continue to inform his decisions as a member of the Democratic caucus.  Senator Specter courageously supported the President's economic recovery package while most Republicans played politics with our nation's economy.   The Senator's willingness to set politics aside and be part of finding solutions to our nation's problems will find a welcome reception in the Democratic Party.  Coming on the heels of Democrat Scott Murphy's victory in a Republican leaning congressional district in New York state, Senator Specter's decision is additional proof that the Republican Party is in serious trouble because it has lost touch with the American people and their desire for change which was so on display in November.

"As Senator Specter noted, the Republican Party has drifted far to the right and seems more interested in ideology, conflict and obstruction than in working constructively to address the nation's problems, and no longer appeals to moderates, including Senator Specter.  I commend Senator Specter on his decision to work with President Obama and Senate Democrats to help turn our economy around, create jobs and put the country back on the right track.  We are thrilled to welcome Senator Specter into the Democratic fold and he can count on our full support."

This just in: Norm Coleman

(The above is satire)
