Blend-o-licious endorsements...

The Christian Civic League of Maine's Mike Hein calls Pam's House Blend:
"a leading source of radical homosexual propaganda, anti-Christian bigotry, and radical transgender advocacy."

He is "praying that Pam Spaulding will "turn away from her wicked and sinful promotion of homosexual behavior." (CCLM's web site, 10/15/07)

Ex-gay "Christian" activist James Hartline on Pam:
"I have been mocked over and over again by ungodly and unprincipled anti-christian lesbians."
(from "Six Years In Sodom: From The Journal Of James Hartline," 9/4/2006, written from the "homosexual stronghold" of Hillcrest in San Diego).

"Pam is a 'twisted lesbian sister' and an 'embittered lesbian' of the 'self-imposed gutteral experiences of the gay ghetto.'" -- 9/5/2008

Peter LaBarbera of Americans for Truth Against Homosexuality heartily endorses the Blend, calling Pam:

A "vicious anti-Christian lesbian activist."
(Concerned Women for America's radio show [9:15], 1/25/07)

"A nutty lesbian blogger."
(MassResistance radio show [16:25], 2/3/07)

Pam's House Blend always seems to find these sick f*cks. The area of the country she is in? The home state of her wife? I know, they are everywhere. Pam just does such a great job of bringing them out into the light.

Hate Crimes Bill - on to the Senate

by: avocado

Wed Apr 29, 2009 at 17:27:29 PM EDT

If I am not mistaken, the hate crimes bill that has just been passed by the House of Reps has been introduced yesterday in the Senate by Senator Kennedy [MA]. I am pretty sure that it is S.909. Text is not yet available from the Government Printing Office. It has been referred to Senate committee, read twice and referred to the Committee on the Judiciary.

It already has 33 34 35 37 39 co-sponsors (as of 5/5/2009). I am proud to note that both senators from New York are among the co-sponsors. Check if yours are there, and contact to thank them, if they are, or to urge them to vote for it, if they are not currently supporting it.

The webpages and contact forms for your Senators are to be found here.

List of Senators co-sponsoring the bill is below the fold. I am going to try to keep up with updates following the list.

Senator Kay Hagan. I really hope she supports this bill when it hits the senate.

Both of mine
on the list: Snowe and Collins.

You know, "The Last of The Moderates"? ;)

good one!
:0) Yeah, Snowe just penned an op-ed piece in the NYTimes.com about Arlen S. leaving the party. Good to know moderates who are still there are getting more vocal.

LOL
I feel so stupid. You're the one who posted about Snowe's op-ed :0)

No prob, avocado
I actually thought I hadn't saved it and was so thrilled to see it up later on... thought I'd lost the whole darned thing.

This was my first day away from Augusta in a week and back in tomorrow...

Mine too
Casey and new Democrat Specter.

I would LOVE to read
a diary with your thoughts about Specter and PA politics/ the local atmosphere at some point!

I haven't followed Specter's career
closely enough to have much to say about him that isn't obvious.

As I said in a comment after his, er, defection, I've never been able to forgive him for the way he demolished Anita Hill and paved the way for Clarence's Thomas' seat on the Supreme Court.  He's always struck me as the worst kind of careerist/opportunist.  Not that there's any shortage of them in Washington.  In his early years in the Senate he always made a big deal of his background as a DA (from Philly), which is one of the things that led him to take the lead role in attacking Hill.  When that performance led to a feminist/progressive voter backlash, he stopped talking about what a terrific prosecutor he was.  He has barely squeaked by in one election after another ever since.

As I'm sure you know, he's been a thorn in the side of the radical right, and that ain't bad.   I've had to admit grudging admiration for him a few times.  But still, the bad taste lingers.  If I had to state a succinct general impression, I think the man would sell his mother to the Somalian pirates if he thought it would get him a few votes.

gee, where's Kay Hagan?
She headlined the HRC Carolinas dinner but can't co-sponsor this bill?

I don't know
but maybe she wasn't there? Boxer of California just joined the co-sponsors on 4/29, a day later, but she was not listed originally.

[ Parent ]
Neither of mine there.
Hardly surprising.

I am the lizard queen!

Durbin is on there
Burris is not.

33 co-sponsors...
2 of them Republicans.  That's not bad...anyone know if this would be filibustered?

Really?
Snowe and Collins are the ONLY Republicans???

Jeez, Olympia- can ya at least get some packing boxes and a few "change of address forms", just in case? Maybe think it over?

[ Parent ]
If two republicans are on the bill
and considering several conservative dems are also co-sponsoring, I do not see a fillabuster happening. The numbers are not there.

[ Parent ]
By my research...
The Republicans need a filibuster to stop this bill.  I went through all the voting records of non-sponsor Dems, and only Byrd of WV seems a probability to vote against it.  There are a few others with not enough of a track record to say for sure, like Tester from Montana.

BTW, newibe Kay Hagan spoke at a gay rights group function in NC earlier this year, so I can't imagine she would vote against this bill.

[ Parent ]
Feinstein has ....of course.
But not Boxer...  but, she will probably vote for it I hope.  Although I know she is against Marriage Equality.

It's the Hammer of JUSTICE,
It's the Bell of FREEDOM,
It's the Song about LOVE between,

...All over this Land.

Boxer is as pro gay marriage as they come in the senate
She was vocally against prop 8 and has a 100% gay rights record from the HRC.

[ Parent ]
Ditto
Boxer joined 4/29, updates lag.

[ Parent ]
I'm wondering?
If Feinstein getting on as a cosponsor before/instead of Boxer possibly has to do with Feinstein being on the Judiciary committee. (...I don't know if that makes sense or not.)

I tried to call both earlier today, but their lines were clogged.

[ Parent ]
Boxer joined yesterday
updates to the Congressional website lag a bit.

[ Parent ]
Ditto
Boxer has joined the co-sponsor list on 4/29 (I posted before Thomas, Library of Congress site was updated, was updated).

[ Parent ]
Mark Udall Colorado is on the Bill,
our other senator, Bennett, says he will vote for it.

If I make sense? it was quite by accident.

Hate Crimes Bill
Both of my senators were not on the list but I sent an email via their sites requesting that they co-sponsor the bill.  I will see if Thad Cochran and Roger Wicker have the guts or balls to send me a response.

A Fitting Memorial
Today is the ten year anniversary of the Admiral Duncan bomb - the last of the three Copeland bombs, and one of the most vicious hate crimes committed against the LGBT community in my lifetime. The bomb killed three people, one of whom was four months pregnant at the time and was celebrating her first pregnancy with her husband and two gay friends, one of whom was to have been her child's godfather; of the four only her husband survived. The bomb also injured 79, four of whom had to have limbs amputated.

Thanks for the information
Does anyone know when they will be voting on the bill?

Come, come, my conservative friend, wipe the dew off your spectacles, and see that the world is moving."
-Elizabeth Cady Stanton

?
I don't know. From the House action this bill got, I'd say about a month. Probably less than that. If we are lucky much less; I mean I can't imagine this bill needing much work at this point...

[ Parent ]
Hmmmmm
Akaka is on the list but not Inouye. We will have to get on that. Inouye hasn't exactly been a slouch in sponsoring legislation this year; it's mostly focused on Veteran, Aboriginal, and Medicare supplementals. Hawaii has inclusive hate crime laws. I'll write Inouye and hassle him to co-sponsor.
