Crist makes it official -- he comes out...as a U.S. Senate candidate

Via MSNBC's First Read:

Florida Gov. Charlie Crist announces he's running for the Senate, giving GOPers their most high-profile recruit of the 2010 cycle and improving their odds of holding on to Mel Martinez's seat. But this is worth noting: Florida has closed primaries, meaning that you have to be a registered Republican to participate in the GOP primary. So that could make Crist's primary match-up against the conservative Marco Rubio, the former speaker of the Florida House, more competitive than many think it will be. In particular, Crist's public support of Obama's stimulus -- remember that Crist appeared at an Obama town hall on the subject -- could be a major issue in the primary. That said, a GOP official says that if Crist gets in, he will receive the National Republican Senatorial Committee's full support. "We think highly of Marco and believe he has a bright future, but Crist is the GOP's best hope of keeping this seat in the GOP column."

*** UPDATE *** Here's Crist announcing on Twitter at 9:10 am ET: "After thoughtful consideration with my wife Carole, I have decided to run for the U.S. Senate."

I guess Carole's ready for the sh*tstorm...

I'll be telling you again, over and over, but just wanted to make sure you saw that, there...my WIFE Carole and I have decided I will run for Senate, that's me and my WIFE Carole. She wants to be a Senator's WIFE..."

Calling every queer in Florida's high rent circles

The next time this man calls on you for sex on the d/l. Accept and then call a cop on a suspected drug bust of yourself right when he gets to the door. It may be dangerous, but apparently that's the only way the media will pick up the ball on this dangerous closet case.

Call the Rubio campaign to give them ideas. Although even if Crist was elected I dont think he would be as friendly to Log Cabin like the Maine senators.

I think its a generational difference, Drier and Crist live in closets, while people my age shatter them with sledge hammers.

Oh there are many

My partner was closeted to herself until her early 20s and my best friend's sister is deep in the closet, but she's only in her early 20s and another friend came out only a handful of years ago and she's in her 30s.

But statistically thanks to the great work of each generation's rabble rousers the number is decreasing and the lag to self-discovery keeps getting shorter.

Go Further!

If I could afford it, I'd PAY to find every former Crist "encounter" and/or boyfriend and PAY them to attend every Crist speaking engagement. Maybe a new episode of "Howie Do It" could capture these moments (for the record, I can't stand Howie's "I'll be an asshole and annoy you" brand of humor).

Can you imagine the lovely couple having a nice dinner at a restaurant, then suddenly a table of 5 former Crist-lickers (or lickies) sits next to them? Of course the waiters, all gay, would be in on it.

Decades more of abuse? - OR - Stonewall. Nationwide. NOW!

Tactical confusion

I'm no LGBT activist, but I'm a sympathizer, and I'm a bit confused here. Assuming that it is true that CC is in fact gay, and in public denial of that fact, how is it advantageous for the LGBT community to make a big deal of that?

I can see an instinctive reaction of wanting to mock his hypocrisy - although his strikes me as relatively mild compared to some others - but is it your hope that he should lose the primary? In favor of some hard right (but heterosexual) GOP SOB? And to do so by battening on the public prejudice against gays?

I mean I have no doubt whatsoever that the religious nutjobs and other bigots would, if forced to confront the fact of CC's gayness, try to embarrass him in every way possible - wearing rainbow garb at his public appearances, tee hee - but why is this in your (our!) interest? Showing that you (we) also believe it is a liability to be gay?

Maybe this approach makes sense, and I just don't see it, which is fine. I wouldn't presume to tell LGBT's how to organize their struggle. I'm just confused.

he supported banning gay adoptions.
