The Christian Civic League of Maine's Mike Hein calls Pam's House Blend:
"a leading source of radical homosexual propaganda, anti-Christian bigotry, and radical transgender advocacy."

He is "praying that Pam Spaulding will "turn away from her wicked and sinful promotion of homosexual behavior." (CCLM's web site, 10/15/07)

Ex-gay "Christian" activist James Hartline on Pam:
"I have been mocked over and over again by ungodly and unprincipled anti-christian lesbians."
(from "Six Years In Sodom: From The Journal Of James Hartline," 9/4/2006, written from the "homosexual stronghold" of Hillcrest in San Diego).

"Pam is a 'twisted lesbian sister' and an 'embittered lesbian' of the 'self-imposed gutteral experiences of the gay ghetto.'" -- 9/5/2008

Peter LaBarbera of Americans for Truth Against Homosexuality heartily endorses the Blend, calling Pam:

A "vicious anti-Christian lesbian activist."
(Concerned Women for America's radio show [9:15], 1/25/07)

"A nutty lesbian blogger."
(MassResistance radio show [16:25], 2/3/07)

Pam's House Blend always seems to find these sick f*cks. The area of the country she is in? The home state of her wife? I know, they are everywhere. Pam just does such a great job of bringing them out into the light.

NC: Former Raleigh mayor sues radio host over gay allegations; sends outlandish letter to media

by: Pam Spaulding

Sat May 23, 2009 at 00:30:00 AM EDT

I have no idea whether long-time GOP consultant and the former mayor of our capital city, Tom Fetzer, is gay. Honestly, I don't care if he is or not, but I do care that he thinks there is something inherently wrong/bad/evil about being gay.

Fetzer, who wants to head up the flailing NC GOP, has just filed a libel lawsuit against Wilmington radio show host Curtis Wright for forwarding an anonymous letter to NC GOP operatives that asserts Fetzer is a Friend of Dorothy. He also names WLTT (Wright's employer), and its corporate owner, Sea-Comm Media. Ryan Teague Beckwith at the N&O's Under the Dome received Fetzer's homo denial letter (all emphasis mine):

Dear Republican Friend:

I apologize in advance for the content of this message, but as you can see, I had no other choice.

Tuesday, Curtis Wright, a radio and television talk show host in Wilmington, forwarded an anonymous letter alleging that I am gay to Republican leaders throughout North Carolina. The letter is a lie, written by a lying coward. I can't sue the lying coward, but I have authorized my attorneys to sue Curtis Wright and the media outlets he works for.

You can click here to view a copy of the letter my attorney sent to Mr. Wright, WLTT, and Sea-Comm Media.

There are two things you need to know:

1)   I am not gay - never have been - never will be. There is absolutely no evidence whatsoever to support any of the scurrilous allegations made in the anonymous attack on me.

2)   I will spare no cost or hardship in defending my good name. I intend to vigorously pursue legal action against any and all who spread these lies. The fact that I'm 54 and single does not mean I have to put up with vicious rumors that I'm gay. The fact that I am heterosexual is a matter of public record. The News & Observer once even reported (erroneously) that I had eloped.

OK. This letter is beyond strange -- how does one's heterosexuality become a matter of public record? I'm serious. Did he have sex with a woman in public? Are there photos of him with a female sex worker? Just declaring you are straight (or gay, for that matter) doesn't mean that's the case. Just because a person marries someone of the opposite sex doesn't make it so either.

I mean look at all the closet cases out there we've seen on the Blend who are married and then get busted at a rest stop or...an airport bathroom? The fact of the matter is Larry Craig, for instance, said quite forcefully that he wasn't gay -- perhaps in his mind he just had sex with men. He's completely heterosexual from his POV, as former pastor Ted Haggard famously declared after his "spiritual restoration" quick fix.

I have no idea what Fetzer's private life is or isn't, but he seems quite determined to outline and share his heterosexual future in this letter.

I will marry one day, and soon I hope, when I find a woman I can't live without who feels the same way about me. Not before. And not for any other reason.  My parents divorced and perhaps that has made me more cautious than most. But I will get married for the right reason. Of the many wrong reasons to get married, to do so in order to fill-out one's political resume tops the list.

I have been involved in politics for over 30 years -- as an activist, a candidate and an elected official - and this is the most outrageous smear I have ever seen.

And I will not tolerate it. Neither should you. Neither should our Party.

As I have traveled around the state, I have made it clear that I will be a Chairman who will FIGHT for our Party and our principles. I'm also going to FIGHT to defend my good name.

The best way to fight a lie is with the truth and that's what I intend to do. I hope you will stand with me in making it clear to those who would disseminate this kind of garbage that there is no room in our Party for them or their lies.

Now, I'm going back to work and continue to focus on leading our Party to victory in the next two years. I ask you to join me in that effort.

Sincerely,

Tom

Wow. The issue for me is the accusation embedded in this letter that there is something wrong with being gay. Perhaps it is from his point of view, but honestly, couldn't Fetzer just have said Wright's a dumbass and blown him off rather than fixate on the need to prove he hates gay people so much that he cannot possibly be gay? This is why the Republican party is self-destructing -- why waste time on something most sane people don't give a rip about? If Fetzer was paying attention, he'd notice the party at the national level is figuring out that constantly whipping on homo strawman just isn't working.

Ryan @ the N&O also points out that Mr. Fetzer, as a public figure, and according to NC libel law, is in a tough spot:

In 1994, the N.C. Court of Appeals ruled that falsely claiming that someone was gay or bisexual was not libelous by itself.
Now I'm not a savvy political consultant like Mr. Fetzer, but wouldn't circulating this kind of aggressive denial only exacerbate whatever rumors are out there? I realize this is the South, but here in the Triangle, a letter like that is going to have people laughing at the former Raleigh mayor. He would be better off not addressing the issue at all, like Charlie Crist.

The risk, of course, if one is gay and in a padlocked closet, is that if there's a rent boy out there who's willing to talk, it's game over, man. If Fetzer's straight, then why put this kind of paranoid letter out there? Well, I know the answer to that question -- the NC GOP is so full of wingnuts, bigots and homophobes that if Wright's allegations get any traction it would deep-six Fetzer's political aspirations.

Then again, this letter is such a PR disaster that it may have the same effect. He's made his denial into a sensational story that brings up the very topic he doesn't want to discuss. Maybe it will work; who knows why he wants to head up that fossilized state party.

I don't know if he is gay
But he is certainly a loser!

It seems to me...
...the lady doth protest too much.

"a matter of public record"
hmmm, here are the possibilities:
1.  he was arrested while picking up a female prostitute
2.  he is for his hetero porn "acting"
3.  he had an affidavit stating "i'm NOT GAY!!!" notarized and mailed it to the editor of the local paper, who reprinted it.
4.  he's just jammering.

I might, possibly have believed he isn't gay...
but he sure wasn't able to laugh it off very easily.  A fun travel game might be to count the number of times he says; "I am gay", like overlapping tessellations.  And whether the word "not" means anything when, um, inserted.

Sorry, I'll act more grown-up now.  Bwa-ha-ha-ha-ha!!!!

Now being a GOP consultant, that's something I wouldn't want to be accused of.

I'm always amazed at the lack of imagination
In phobes and closet cases. They'll cling to the sad cover story or maybe that one time they had sex with a woman or how they forced themselves to marry one of them or something and spout it out like it erases their male lust or all the times they've been having sex with men.

I'd really like to see the look on their faces if someone was to listen to the end of their fervent denial and then sigh deeply and go, "Fine Captain Pedantic, you're bi."

Not that these closet cases are actually bi or more than barely bi, but it is amazing how they don't see the whole picture.

Why is it
that straight people sue for being accused of being gay, but we don't sue when someone accuses us of being straight (that was a running joke among an old band of mine, since I get all the time, "you don't act gay" and I would flirt with our straight female singer).

Seriously, folks, they're just words. The only reason they have that power of you is because you decided to make being gay something icky. You made your bed, now sleep in it (and it doesn't matter who else is there).

I was thinking the same thing. How come we don't act like this when someone mistakes us for straight?

Gay?
Verdict:  He is Lindsey Graham lite.  Next case!

Public record
The public record shows that he had a female stalker, Valerie Daye, who spent time in jail and a mental facility in 1998 for following him over a period of 3 years while he was Mayor of Raleigh. I guess that settles it.

gregflynn BlueNC.com

He is going to have a hard time with that lawsuit
The bar is VERY high. In this country you have to prove intent AND you have to prove that you were damaged. By complaining about some anonymous letter in this manner Fetzer is doing himself more damage than if he had ignored the whole thing.

It really amazes me how people are terrified of lawsuits in this country and have no idea how they work. Especially when it comes to gay.

Yes Liberace and Tom Cruise won lawsutis -- in England where the bar is considerably lower than the U.S.

Liberace won one U.S. case but that was because he could prove he wasn't in the city his accuser claimed he had been. IOW a technicality. In the end of course it didn't make him any straighter.

As Fetzer is a Republican loudly proclaiming that he isn't gay, the liklihood of his being straight is extremely remote.

I received the anonymous letter as a tip from a reader
The letter itself might be deemed defamatory as there are accusations made that are stated as fact and it's more than just being gay.   The tone of the letter is also malicious, so Fetzer might have a case against the original author of the letter...don't know about those who spread it around.

Oh...and it is signed, "Concerned Gay Republican."

[ Parent ]
That's hysterical
Well as long as "Concerned Gay Republican" wants to remain in the closet, it's unlikely Fetzer is going to find this person AND he's going to get his case tossed out and all of this bad press. If nothing else, it says a lot about his media management prowess. :)

[ Parent ]
I have to admit...I got a laugh out of it
and you're right...it appears Fetzer is the one stirring the pot.  His day in court should be quite the circus.

[ Parent ]
As for Cruise --
He has never attempted a U.S. lawsuit -- though he has threatened to sue yours truly.

AS IF!

from a legal standpoint, it can't be worse for him
I guess his lawyer missed the  cases in NC in which it was determined that being " accused" of being gay is not defamatory... even for a closet case.
Add to that  that if this case does somehow proceed through the court system (and miraculously gets past the inevitable 12(b)(6) and Rule 11 Motions to be filed in response...)
that Mr Fetzer will get a lOT of publicity about questions over his orientation (I hear closet cases HATE that kind of thing) PLUS, since truth IS a defense to " defamation" (it's in quotes because being called gay is NO big deal, at least not to me- and I"m straight) we;;.. there 's going to be sa LOT of shall we say  interesting evidence put forth in defense of the lawsuit.

Marital status
One of the weirder manifestations of homophobia in this country is the ongoing perception among a lot of people that marital status = sexual orientation.  In a lot of cases it is, of course, but that's more a matter of coincidence than actual linkage.

Remember when Anita Bryant caught her first husband in bed with another guy?  My first lover (may his carbonized bones rot in hell) has been married to a woman for years, but I keep hearing through the grapevine that he's out in the bars almost every weekend, trolling for gay sex.  Police are always astonished that most of the men arrested having gay sex in men's rooms, rest stops and the like are married.

I can never quite shake an image of two married men (Larry Craig and my ex, say) copulating feverishly and telling each other, repeatedly and insistently, "This doesn't make us gay."

Cynic, n.  A blackguard whose faulty vision sees things as they are, not as they ought to be.
-Bierce, The Devil's Dictionary

I'll bet you that
within a short period of time we will see him on a date with a woman (publicly, as in making a big deal of it) or he will announce that he has "found the one" and announce that he will marry soon.

As others have stated, the nature of his denials is telling in itself. As in: either he's really gay or there are deeper secrets in that sealed vault of a closet. You never know.

nothing new at this time.....

So why doesn't he change parties....
The Dems don't like gays either...e.g. the Obama Administration.

Psychology of the closet
The "Outrage" movie goes deeply into this very issue, snd concludes that it's all about the psychology of the closet.

We all know the deal, right?  In high school, I had a girlfriend for a couple of months, all because I was lying to myself, and desperately afraid of the supposed consequences of admitting what I knew inside to be true.  I pictured being rejected by my family, kicked out onto the street, spurned by my friends, what have you.  That none of these fears were rational (my friends and family turned out to be completely supportive) mattered not at all - phobias don't have to be rational.

Finally I reached a point where I just couldn't lie to myself any more, and so I eventually came out - "to myself" first at age 16, and then to everybody else over the course of the next several years.  We all make that journey on one schedule or another.

But for these politicians, the psychology of the closet takes on a nightmarish life of its own.  The fear of exposure, the supposed consequences if "the awful truth" were to be revealed, gets more and more outlandish, and the victim goes to greater and greater lengths to "prove" how straight, how absolutely gay-hating, he is.  He can't just get married, he has to parade his wife and kids at every opportunity.  He can't just be Republican, he has to be as stridently anti-gay in his votes as possible!  Because he hates himself and this "thing" he is, so intensely, he has to externalize that hate and direct it against those horrible, horrible gays.

That's what turns these closet cases from pathetic victims into very dangerous people.  Go too far down that road, you become Roy Cohn, witch-hunting gays and ruining their lives, all to avoid looking within.  That's what the closet can do to a person.  And that's why, as Harvey Milk put it, the biggest step any GLBT person can take is to come out.  Sunlight is the ultimate cure.

Fetzer/Liberace connection
Not saying that Tom Fetzer resembles Liberace or his mannerisms, although that is lol territory...there are striking similarities with both parties...both right-wingers, both denying being gay. I'm glad to see somebody posted that Tom Cruise sued over this, because I was under the impression that the only person who ever did was Liberace. He should have been forced to pay retribution to The Daily Mirror when it was revealed he was actually gay (assuming this was ever acknowledged when he was alive). I'm puzzled (even more than I am by the entire shenanigan) by the statement about Fetzer's heterosexuality being "a matter of public record". This is from the Wikipedia page on Liberace --

Confusion over Liberace's true sexuality was further muddled in the public's mind by his public friendships and romantic links with actress Joanne Rio (whom he claimed he nearly married), skater Sonja Henie, aging Hollywood icon Mae West, and famous transsexual Christine Jorgenson. Many publicity releases and women's magazine articles attempted to counter the gay rumors by portraying Liberace as "the perfect all-around man any woman would be thrilled to be with...He's so considerate on dates... He never forgets the little things that women love...He makes you feel that when you are with him, well, you really are with him." Another article was entitled "Mature Women Are Best: TV's Top Pianist Reveals What Kind of Woman He'd Marry".

I guess Liberace's heterosexuality was "a matter of public record" as well!

Maybe Obama can sue Nancy Reagan
She started a vicious rumour yesterday that he's left-handed.
