I'm wondering
how the rest of the progressive blogosphere, meaning outside of LGBT blogs, will react to this over the next few weeks.  My cynical self tells me that we'll hear all kinds of turd polishing and calls for us to sit quietly in the back of the bus.

Also, notice how this came out on a Friday? That's a downright Rovian play.

I'm so disgusted right now; I'm glad that I have plenty of work left to do today.

Why does our country never learn from its mistakes?
Up until last week, I was quite in favor of giving the Administration a free pass on gay and lesbian equality. I gave the President every excuse in the book - the financial crisis, closing Guantanamo, conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. Perhaps I was being a little too hopeful.

Then, I re-read Martin Luther King Jr.'s "Letter from Birmingham Jail." I have always drawn inspiration from Dr. King and, once again, he did not disappoint. Here are a few lines from his letter that really struck home to me on the issues of equality as we now see it today:

"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere."

"Anyone who lives inside the United States can never be considered an outsider anywhere within its bounds."

"As in so many past experiences, our hopes had been blasted, and the shadow of deep disappointment settled upon us."

"We know through painful experience that freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed."

"For years now I have heard the word 'Wait!' It rings in the ear of every Negro with piercing familiarity. This 'Wait" has almost always meant 'Never.' We must come to see, with one of our distinguished jurists, that 'justice too long delayed is justice denied.'"

"Any law that uplifts human personality is just. Any law that degrades human personality is unjust."

"An unjust law is a code that a numerical or power majority group compels a minority group to obey but does not make binding on itself."

"Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will."

"We will have to repent in this generation not merely for the hateful words and actions of the bad people but for the appalling silence of the good people."

"Oppressed people cannot remain oppressed forever. Teh yearning for freedom eventually manifests itself..."

I know this is long, but I re-read these words and I walk away with a clearer understanding of how we merge the sad history of our past with the current civil rights issues that we face. Unfortunately, we as a people seem so unwilling to learn from our past mistakes. History will not judge kindly (hello, George Wallace). The larger question becomes: does the President of the United States recognize this truth?

Fuck Obama
Fuck Obama and Fuck the Democrats. We can say how bad McCain and Palin would have been, but at least we knew they were going to screw us. I am done with the Democratic party. I will be sitting out elections from now on!!

Don't sit it out
 Go to the poles and vote, write in a vote for Equality.  We the LGBT community need to have a write in candidate that is written by everyone sick of the Democratic Party.  LT Dan Choi would work.  If everyone could agree to write his name in.  That would show a revolt from the LGBT community.

 But the question is, Will those who are part of the LGBT community have the guts to stand up. or will they cave and vote for the Democratic because the other would be worse?

 I vow not to be a token vote For the Democratic Party.

A "statement" about LGBT rights
made in the Democratic (sic) Party will fall on deaf or hostile ears. There is no - zero, nada, zip - chance of reforming the Democratic Party or making it an instrument of change. It's owned by the rich and run by desperate hustlers who pander to them and the religious right.

Working in that party, trying to influence it, bartering support for a few crumbs is a vast waste of energy and an exercise in futility and misleadership.

Elections don't create fundamental change in the US and haven't since Lincoln was elected. If a populist like him were to be elected now it be after the Democrats and Republicans were politically routed. Moreover it would signal the beginning of a combative political period when the question of who runs the state, the rich or working people would be up for grabs.

Forget the Democrats. They own the war. They own the recession maybe depression. They own homobigotry, racism and misogyny. They're as extinct as T-Rex, and like old Rex, way to dumb to have figured it out.

A write-in is fine...
And so are votes for pro-GLBT socialist parties, but the key things to remember about elections are first that they don't - can't - produce the kinds of fundamental changes we need. If they did they'd be outlawed.

Secondly their real utility lies in the fact that they're a wonderful excuse to run candidates on a left LGBT program and explain what needs to be done to get real change. They're a valuable tool for organizing and nothing more.  

In most elections roughly one third to one half of the electorate sits it out because they're sick and tired of voting for the lesser bigot, the lesser warmonger and the lesser lap dog of the looter class. There is absolutely nothing wrong with voting by not voting. It's a perfectly legitimate reaction to a non-democratic rigged system that turns our bigot politicians by the bushel full and that gives us the choice of Obama or McCain, which is not a choice at all.

I would say that I feel sorry for the next black man who runs for President, he would be judge by Obama...If Obama does good, then the next black man task might be easy, but if Obama fails the way Rush want him too, then the next black man will have one hell of a battle. he will be judge by Obama failures, they will say that a Black man cant run that office..

These are a few things you can do that wont take long at all, of course we all have to do more, but these are a few simple steps.


Shameful
As all this is playing out, I wanted to review the recent interview with Brian Williams, in which Obama says he's a friend to the gay community.

Has anyone else noticed that the links to this interview on various websites have been scrubbed?  When did that happen, I wonder, and why?  Who's responsible?  If anyone has information about this, I'd appreciate it, since I've alluded to it on my blog but want to have precise information if I blog further about it.

Shameful behavior by the Obama administration with DOMA--totally shameful.  Totally undermines all moral claims on which its progressive platform rests.


Do it yourself liberation
Okay, so I fell for it too. And yeah, it stings like mad. Still, there is a lesson to be learned here, and it would do us well to learn it quick.

NEITHER party represents our interests, or ever will. That shoudl have been apparent when both Gore and Kerry ran as fast as they could from the GLBT community during their campaigns, when Clinton voted for DOMA and DADT. I've been to Clinton's library, which is basically a series of tiles with little writeups about the events of his Presidency in front of some memorabilia. The GLBT community gets just one of those tiles, and on it it talks about how DADT 'was never applied as it had been intended to be'. Interestingly, all mention of DOMA is absent-it would be pretty hard to argue that DOMA was not Clinton's fault, that it was just the fault of those who has implemented it improperly.

Now, donating money to the Democrats will just bring more of the same-Obama will assume that as long as he can attract dollars to his account, he's doing what he should be doing. If you want to send him a message that he's not doing what you want him to do, donate that money to the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund-all the money goes to elect GLBT candidates.

The idea behind the Victory Fund is this: Obama, like every other politician, will say whatever he has to to win. He can afford to change his mind later, because he himself is not gay; our civil rights or lack thereof does not apply to him on any personal level, he has no stake in our survival or prosperity or happiness. He has no reason to care, so long as he can get a better funding stream from someone else. Besides, who else are you gonna donate to, Sarah Palin?

However, a GLBT person cannot escape the subject of GLBT civil rights, since those are their own rights. It is not just in their backyard, it's on their doorstep, and they can't get past it without dealing with it. So stop electing heterosexuals to advocate for you.

Elect your own kind. Nobody else can understand GLBT issues like a GLBT person.

and we did not vote for him, which showed the Dems that we wouldn't withold our votes from candidates based upon rights issues.

In 2012, there will be people here demanding that we all support Obama because "Gingrich(or whatever republican) will apppoint another Alito."

Well, Sotomayor is to the right of Souter, no huge win there other than we did not get a Scalia.

I, like many others, questioned the value of March when Congress isn't around, but I'm starting to think maybe a march targeted at Obama's ear instead isn't a terrible idea.   (I'm not saying there aren't more effective ways to use time & money, but I'm also not sure that the same people who would be engaged by the idea of a March on Washington are the same people who would instead send a check equaling the amount of their travel expenses to a pro-lgbt group)

Former Vice President Cheney had an opportunity during the entire 2004 election to speak out in favour of marriage equality.  However, he choose to remain SILENT on the issue while more states passed constitutional bans prohibiting marriage equality.  He is not to be trusted!

If I remember correctly they quoted a Congressman as saying he expected Obama to do something major in June, but couldn't guarantee anything.

I keep thinking the brief must be a joke
I'm waiting for some right winger to pop out and say surprise! It was all a hoax! Or for Obama to issue a denial.
But no. This is crazy.

And I have to wonder, where his the upside to this for Obama? He is nothing if not a shrewd political calculator. So are we really that toxic now? Can he make up our lost votes with extra votes from say, Latinos, or (name your group) next time? Is that what's going on? Or is he expecting us to be good little degenerates and not pay attention to the fact he has used us. Or he thinks we're too busy putting on our tiaras and pumping iron to even follow politics? I don't know.

What is the next expendable group for him? As the saying goes, first they came for the gypsies, and I said nothing because I wasn't a gypsy.

I hate to lose as well. You asked what to say to them, not what to do.  I have been saying for quite a while that HRC is not the real friend of the entire LGBT community.  Problem is many LGBTs still donate to them.  They need to stay in business to make money.  Equal Rights for all LGBT means they are out of business.  It also removes the Democratic Base of LGBTs.  

I just hope that when the 2010 midterms roll around, the LGBT community doesn't roll over a vote for Democratic candidates with the false hope they will do anything.

Obama has lost my support. I have never been a Democrat, and I never will be, I'm loyal to principles, not people. The Democrats who keep saying just wait, or there are more important things going on, don't get and are just fakers in my opinion.

I've been pissed and sick to my stomach since I read this.

Does seem like a long time ago, doesn't it?
I would certainly hope that Messina would recognize some in our community are anxious. Slowly, the truth is unfolding and it looks as if we have been had. Anxiety is now an understatement; looks more to me like pissed off.

Does the President not get it? Does he not understand that we ask for a few basic things. 1) to serve openly and honestly in any capacity in service of our country if we wish. 2) the freedom to enter into a federally recognized civil marriage in any of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the territories and to have those marriages recognized as required by the full faith and credit clause. 3) the freedom to live peacefully and without discrimination in our own homes, communities, at school, and in the workplace.

Is that just TOO much to ask? I mean, we're just asking for our natural rights, for crying out loud. Sorry to be too much of an inconvenience, Mr. President, but my civil rights...

Someone needs to tell the President that this is not 1993 and he is not Bill Clinton.

To Mr. and Mrs. LGBT community,
 As you know I needed your vote during the democratic primary and you turned out in my favor overwhelmingly. I know I made many promises to you and it is unfortunate that I have to back track on those promises.

 I am sure you will be ticked off, but with the shape the republicans are in we democrats don't need your support.  But I also know the LGBT community will continue to vote for democrats because you all know what you will get from republicans.  So why should I as President address your issues.

If I make sense? it was quite by accident.
