The Christian Civic League of Maine's Mike Hein calls Pam's House Blend:
"a leading source of radical homosexual propaganda, anti-Christian bigotry, and radical transgender advocacy."

He is "praying that Pam Spaulding will "turn away from her wicked and sinful promotion of homosexual behavior." (CCLM's web site, 10/15/07)

Ex-gay "Christian" activist James Hartline on Pam:
"I have been mocked over and over again by ungodly and unprincipled anti-christian lesbians."
(from "Six Years In Sodom: From The Journal Of James Hartline," 9/4/2006, written from the "homosexual stronghold" of Hillcrest in San Diego).

"Pam is a 'twisted lesbian sister' and an 'embittered lesbian' of the 'self-imposed gutteral experiences of the gay ghetto.'" -- 9/5/2008

Peter LaBarbera of Americans for Truth Against Homosexuality heartily endorses the Blend, calling Pam:

A "vicious anti-Christian lesbian activist."
(Concerned Women for America's radio show [9:15], 1/25/07)

"A nutty lesbian blogger."
(MassResistance radio show [16:25], 2/3/07)

Pam's House Blend always seems to find these sick f*cks. The area of the country she is in? The home state of her wife? I know, they are everywhere. Pam just does such a great job of bringing them out into the light.

Senator Chris Dodd: I now support marriage equality

by: Pam Spaulding

Mon Jun 22, 2009 at 11:44:56 AM EDT

I was just contacted by Adam Wells of Sen. Chris Dodd's (D-CT) office who wanted to let Blenders know that the Senator has changed his mind about marriage equality and sent on an op-ed written for the The Meriden Record-Journal  explaining his evolution on the matter.  It's odd, isn't it, that our President has moved in the opposite direction since his days running for the U.S. Senate. The constitutional law prof supported marriage equality then, but now "God is in the mix."

Sen. Dodd and Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA, who voted for DOMA) have moved in the direction of equality. Why can't our "fierce advocate"?

Rights, Responsibilities and Love

June 21, 2009

Public officials aren't supposed to change their minds. But I firmly believe that it's important to keep learning. Last week, while I was in Connecticut meeting with members of the gay and lesbian community from across the state, I had the opportunity to tell them what I've learned about marriage, and about equality.

While I've long been for extending every benefit of marriage to same-sex couples, I have in the past drawn a distinction between a marriage-like status ("civil unions") and full marriage rights.

The reason was simple: I was raised to believe that marriage is between a man and a woman. And as many other Americans have realized as they've struggled to reconcile the principle of fairness with the lessons they learned early in life, that's not an easy thing to overcome.

But the fact that I was raised a certain way just isn't a good enough reason to stand in the way of fairness anymore.

The Connecticut Supreme Court, of course, has ruled that such a distinction holds no merit under the law. And the Court is right.

I believe that effective leaders must be able and willing to grow and change over their service. I certainly have during mine - and so has the world. Thirty-five years ago, who could have imagined that we'd have an African-American President of the United States?

My young daughters are growing up in a different reality than I did. Our family knows many same-sex couples - our neighbors in Connecticut, members of my staff, parents of their schoolmates. Some are now married because the Connecticut Supreme Court and our state legislature have made same-sex marriage legal in our state.

But to my daughters, these couples are married simply because they love each other and want to build a life together. That's what we've taught them. The things that make those families different from their own pale in comparison to the commitments that bind those couples together.

And, really, that's what marriage should be. It's about rights and responsibilities and, most of all, love.

I believe that, when my daughters grow up, barriers to marriage equality for same-sex couples will seem as archaic, and as unfair, as the laws we once had against inter-racial marriage.

And I want them to know that, even if he was a little late, their dad came down on the right side of history.

I have always been proud of my long record fighting for the civil rights of the LGBT community. I've co-sponsored legislation to strengthen hate crime laws and end discrimination in the workplace. I've spoken out against "don't ask, don't tell" and always supported equal rights for domestic partnerships.

But I am also proud to now count myself among the many elected officials, advocates, and ordinary citizens who support full marriage equality for same-sex couples.

I understand that even those who oppose discrimination might continue to find it hard to re-think the definition of marriage they grew up with. I know it was for me.

But many of the things we must do to make our union more perfect - whether it's fighting for decades to reform our health care system or struggling with a difficult moral question - are hard. They take time. And they require that, when you come to realize that something is right, you be unafraid to stand up and say it.

That's the only way our history will progress along that long arc towards justice.

UPDATE: HRC's Michael Cole passed on a link to an entry on Back Story by Brian Rice of HRC's Board of Governors. Rice met with Dodd and and other CT activists. Dodd has a 100% HRC Scorecard rating. A snippet.
Senator Dodd also let us know that he was committed to ensuring that federal rights were portable, so that a same-sex couple married in Connecticut would receive the federal benefits of marriage even if they relocated to a state without marriage equality.  He also said that he was committed to finding a vehicle in the Senate to advance hate crimes legislation and hoped that the bill would be passed soon.  Finally, he agreed to look into adding sexual orientation and gender identity to a bill called the Affordable Health Choices Act, a move that would provide for research regarding the health concerns of the LGBT community.

Thank Him!
Every time another politician/elected official speaks out for us, we gain a little more support among the general public.

The last four years of the Bush administration were a constant litany of gay bashing from the president on down among the Republicans. The Democrats? Mostly timid, largely silent.

Now, average Mr. and Mrs. voter are hearing prominent people say favorable things. It matters, and it matters a lot.

But, still, the most important voices are our own. Every time we are seen and heard as American citizens, good neighbors, congenial coworkers, likeable customers and clients, we win more friends, allies, and future voters for equality.

So, thank you, Senator Dodd -- and everybody (but particularly Connecticut residents) should send him a "thank-you" note.

And, then, go forth and seek the support of the rest of the Senators!

Yes, Thank Them
Yes, it's almost as important we express our gratitude and let politicians on our side know that we've heard them as it is that we express our displeasure with those who continue to oppose our legal equality. I'll be sending both Dodd and Harkin letters of thanks.

[ Parent ]
Oh Goody!
And so is Corzine, governor of NJ. But the rub is that  both are still members of a party run by bigots.

We should say thank you. And ask what took you so long?

Then we should tell them that no Democrat deserves even an iota of support from us until they expel all the bigots in the Democratic (sic) Party, starting with the Clintons, Obama and Biden. Then they'll have to pass our entire agenda and guarantee our rights via a Constitutional Amendment.

Then we can talk, maybe.

The looter rich much prefer working with Democrats like Obama and the Clintons - they're greedier, they fool more people and they're able to get away with a lot more than Republicans.

[ Parent ]
wow, what'd Biden do?
Last I'd heard he got a 100% from HRC and is not known to have opposed any GBLT legislation in his long Senate career, voting for job protection, hate crimes, and to block the Constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.

http://www.issue2008.com/joe-b...

He did vote for DOMA, I'll grant, but still...

The pursuit of total and complete ideological purity is not going well for the GOP, we'd do well not to mimic them on the left.

[ Parent ]
You got it in one...
Sen. Biden (D, BoA)voted for DOMA. He's never apologized.
Sen. Biden (D, BoA) voted for DADT and didn't apologize.

He's a long time supporter of the genocide in Iraq. As Bush sought Senate approval for his invasion, occupation and genocide in Iraq, Biden said

I do not believe this is a rush to war. I believe it is a march to peace and security. ...[Saddam Hussein] possesses chemical and biological weapons and is seeking nuclear weapons.

These are the same lies Bill Clinton used to justify his child killing genocidal embargo a few years earlier.
His other right wing votes include

Voted YES on loosening restrictions on cell phone wiretapping. (Oct 2001)
Establish greenhouse gas tradable allowances. (Feb 2005)
Voted NO on limiting the President's power to impose economic sanctions. (Jul 1998) Infanticide in Iraq
Voted YES on Strengthening of the trade embargo against Cuba. (Mar 1996)
Voted YES on ending Vietnam embargo. (Jan 1994)
Voted YES on extending free trade to Andean nations. (May 2002)
Voted YES on renewing 'fast track' presidential trade authority. (Nov 1997)
Voted YES on reauthorizing the PATRIOT Act. (Mar 2006)
Voted YES on deploying National Missile Defense ASAP. (Mar 1999)
Oppose granting driver's licenses for 'illegal' immigrants. (Nov 2007)
Supported Bush plan: both border fence & path to citizenship. (Nov 2007)
Post-colonial countries like Iraq need federal system. (Nov 2007) So we can steal their oil absent a central government
Voted to move the US Embassy to Jerusalem. (Nov 1995)

If you think it couldn't get sleazier than that remember that in his capacity as the Senator for Bank of America he championed and helped write the utterly rancid rightwing bill that made bankruptcy an instrument of predatory credit card and mortgage vultures instead of a way to say working people trapped in debt, without medical insurance and unable to maintain their standard of living because of Clintons's NAFTA and deregulation of banks.

Sen. Biden (D, BoA) got $214,000 in 'contributions' from employees and executives of credit-card giant MBNA, a unit of Bank of America Corp. Then, oddly, Biden's son Hunter was hired right out of law school by MBNA. By dint of pluck and good old 'Murican know how Hunter quickly worked his way into a senior vice presidency of MBNA. He and his son profited handsomely pimping for B of A and MNBA.

Sen. Biden's (D, BoA) record on the big gay votes is identical to that of his cfonte, poraries like Strom Thurmond, Jesse Helms and Rick Santorum.

Is that corrupt enough for you, or do you excuse everything done by Democrats? Democrats who excuse that kind of behavior are not part of the left. They're right centrists.

"It does not require a majority to prevail, but rather an irate, tireless minority keen to set brush fires in people's minds." Sam Adams

The looter rich much prefer working with Democrats like Obama and the Clintons - they're greedier, they fool more people and they're able to get away with a lot more than Republicans.

[ Parent ]
I don't mean to be nitpicking...
And this is a very moving and welcome statement. But I do wish he hadn't strengthened the right wing meme that extending marriage rights to all people equally amounts to "redefining marriage."

("I understand that even those who oppose discrimination might continue to find it hard to re-think the definition of marriage they grew up with. I know it was for me. ")

In his head it was...
for many of us it isn't.  And he did provide what he now realized and what we all recognize to be the true definition.

"And, really, that's what marriage should be. It's about rights and responsibilities and, most of all, love."

That's the definition.  And for him that is a redefinition.

[ Parent ]
I see your point, but
I don't agree. Did you notice he doesn't mention his religious background?  I mean, the religious angle is almost all the Right has left to cling to. I kept waiting for Dodd to make the obligatory reference to his faith. I think it was really savvy of him to avoid that pitfall.

We are all the product to some extent of our upbringings. Why wouldn't we expect that it might be more difficult for him to wrap his head around the marriage equality concept than some 20-year-old who has grown up in such a different world? I can still remember the time period when I began to take the prospect of marriage rights seriously myself, and it was at least 25 years after I came out.

[ Parent ]
Good on Sen. Dodd!
Now THIS is how one becomes a "fierce advocate" for equality! I hope he'll soon be matching his wonderful words with wonderful actions. I hear a DOMA repeal bill needs to be introduced? Whoever does this will be among the first to get my donations. ;-)

Want to save marriage equality in Maine? Ask me how! ;-)

Great but weird timing
I always wonder what prompts Pols to speak out when they do. Right now with Dodd embroiled in the Health Care debate, why write this op-ed now? Particularly since the CT gay marriage ship left the habor (relatively) long ago.

Unless the Dems "suggested" their top names start making positive headline on GLBT issues right now? I'm a cynic, I admit it.

Reason for Timing
It's called politics for the following reasons:

I suspect that the timing has something to do with the pressure being applied by us to shut down the gAyTM DNC LGBT Fundraiser.

LGBT activists, including myself, here in Connecticut have been lobbying him to take that final step to FULL equality.

And, a 2010 democratic primary challenger to Dodd, Merrick Alpert, has started his campaign endorsing full equality which put pressure on Dodd to make the leap.

Regardless, I commend Senaotr Dodd on his evolution.

Close the GayTM. Only give to candidates who have actually done something other than make promises - most are just pandering for our cash.

[ Parent ]
cynical, but true -- spot on
Dodd's poll numbers have been unimpressive, to say the least. He's got a Lieberman problem...against any generic republican, he was trailing in polls. Against a named candidate, worse so. In nice, blue, relatively liberal Connecticut.

Like Lieberman, he's vulnerable to a challenge from the left, so he's moving to the left where it's safe to do so -- in a state where equality is securely the law of the land.

This is a relatively safe way for Chris Dodd to shore up some base to survive a primary, which is probably the greater threat to his Senate career than the general election (although as our wealthiest state, Connecticut can still vote for Republicans if they're they old-guard Ford types, rare these days).

[ Parent ]
No credit until he does something but talk
as far as GBLT primary vote goes imo.

[ Parent ]
It's a first step, but true ACTIONS speak louder than words.
And let this be a lesson to ALL Democrats:  show me ACTIONS and then we'll show the money.

Obama and the Democratic Party must know that they are not only pissing of the 10% GLBT community but also our families and MANY straight supporters.

[ Parent ]
Lieberman Needs to Go

[ Parent ]
I'm fairly sure he is gone
next go around. He has no friends, no fan, no supporters.

[ Parent ]
Clark, don't we want them to change their mind
when we protest?  Isn't that why we protest?
Isn't this the change we wanted to see?  If we are going to be a cynical every time one of our ideas works, then what the hell are we doing it for?

I don't care why he changed position, and it could be just what he said or it could be our protests, the fact remains he changed.

I am going to write thank him heartily and sincerely personally.

And keep working in small ways to get more to change just like so many of us are.

[ Parent ]
To clarify, of course it's good
As I said as much.

I was just challenging us all to look at it critically. and JohnVisser seems to have run with my underlying point: the gAyTM shut down and we're seeing more pretty talk.

Nice. Congratulation. And thank you.

Now, let's see some bold action to complement your sentiment, Senator Dodd. I believe you have to power to introduce legislation into the senate to repeal DOMA (or DADT, which could also use a Senate advocate).

When can we expect that legislation?

[ Parent ]
Agreed.
Now, let's see some bold action to complement your sentiment, Senator Dodd. I believe you have to power to introduce legislation into the senate to repeal DOMA (or DADT, which could also use a Senate advocate).

As I said in my comment, I may help him IF he introduces the legislation. Same goes for the other Senators who recently jumped aboard "The Equality Express". But unless and until the words are matched with action, this GayTM is still out of order.

Want to save marriage equality in Maine? Ask me how! ;-)

[ Parent ]
Yes, and that is what we continute to push for
Thank you for clarifying to me.

[ Parent ]
wondered the same thing
His state has legalized marriage equality so...does his opinion really matter?

Now if only we could get some southern members of Congress to come out in support of marriage equality...

[ Parent ]
did i miss the part
in his letter where he committed to introduce legislation in the senate for repeal of DOMA and DADT since that is now his position?

heh - I asked the very same question
I replied to Adam Wells:

Hi Adam,

I posted this on PHB.

The obvious follow up question for me is will the Senator now announce a commitment to introduce legislation in the Senate for repeal of DOMA (or DADT), given his support for equality under the law?

Many thanks,
--Pam

[ Parent ]
they just don't get it
words are nice, but now we expect the ACTIONS to go with the words.

[ Parent ]
No ACTION = No gay $$$ money
Show me ACTION first ... then we show them the money!

[ Parent ]
Great followup -
- the kind "journalists" won't do. Thanks, Pam!

[ Parent ]
Excellent Pam

[ Parent ]
Also, Pam
...this would be a great time to push the other Connecticut Senator, Joe Lieberman. What does his office have to say? It's the law of the land in his home state and his fellow Senator is a supporter of equality.

What stand is HE going to take -- not just on marriage equality, but on ENDA, DADT, and DOMA?

[ Parent ]
Liberman was at Barry's signing of the crumbs
Bitch just LOVES to have his picture taken.

[ Parent ]
Lieberman says DOMA must stay
Check out my article in the diaries:

http://www.pamshouseblend.com/...

Also, I called Lieberman's office here in CT this morning and a staffer affirmed he was not changing his mind on DOMA. The staffer's said, "The Senator still supports the Defense of Marriage Act."

Close the GayTM. Only give to candidates who have actually done something other than make promises - most are just pandering for our cash.

[ Parent ]
Such courage, such leadership
bravely supporting equal marriage AFTER his state has legalized it.

I'm not going to stand in line to thank this clown.

I'll reserve my thanks for people who actually work to change discriminatory laws, not someone who reluctantly says they will agree after others have done the hard work of reform.

Bitch, bitch, bitch
Spite is not productive. Thanking allies is -- and so is rewarding them at the polls.

[ Parent ]
asking the Senator to sponsor pro-lgbt legislation
Is not spite. It's a a request to follow through with action. Words, as we all know, don't matter if there is not movement forward by those in power. I'm glad the Senator is stepping up to publicly support equality as a sentiment. So now he can continue his evolution by addressing matters legislatively.

[ Parent ]
But how can I not see this
as being cynical, at this time. given the anger at the Democrats and the Obama Administration.

I mean, I appreciate his support, but why now, 3 days before the fundraiser? I'm not a baby and I don't need a pacifier and that is how this comes off to an extent.

[ Parent ]
Not only that he is up for re-elecetion and is in trouble
I wouldn't give him too much credit right now on this.  He is up for re-election and is in serious trouble at this point.  Unless he introduces legislation BEFORE his primary, I would question the motives, but still thank him for the letter.

But you are a resident of IL
and as such, should be printing this out and faxing it to your state legislators.

Where they live, until we persuade them otherwise, is a scared and weak place of  knowing that it's politically risky to speak the obvious truth that we are citizens with rights.

You can know they are wrong, especially in a state with real economic problems and a strong progressive tradition like yours, until you're blue in the face and it won't get you anywhere.

What counts is teaching them that they're wrong and politicians are scaredy-cats who can only be led by example.

There's a place for insisting on your own equality and there's also a time for thanking the people who make that more than words. This is the second. He didn't say, Give Andy Tobias money and I'll work on it; he said, I want my kids to know that I was on the right side of history. For the right audience, this is very important.

If you don't need to reach that audience, no need to apply the cynical lens--it's just not what you need at this time.

Though I would challenge all of you who want more results:

Why not? Why do you NOT read this as an endorsement of equality, that should be shot out to the people who are going to make decisions about it for your state? It's strong language that helps you make the case for change. If you haven't put it to work this morning...what are you waiting for?

(Please don't tell me 'my state organization/HRC/NGLTF will tell me what to do', either.)

But wait, there's more!

[ Parent ]
his first sentence would have done it.
Such courage, such leadership bravely supporting equal marriage AFTER his state has legalized it.
We can all infer the rest.

[ Parent ]
"Thanking" for what ?
I would be happy to thank him if he does anything - I can't see "thanking" someone who does nothing and then wants credit after the hard work is done.

That encourages cowardice, not leadership

[ Parent ]
YOU think he deserves a thank-you, YOU can make him the cookie
I'm not going to thank a coward who stood by and watched someone else mug me, then gave me a pat on the head and said, "What a horrible thing that just happened to you. You didn't deserve that." I reserve my gratitude for people who earn it.

I was a registered CT voter up until 2008 (got out of the military in late 2006, changed residency, changed voting registration). I've been on Chris Dodd's email list since 2004, and originally supported him in the presidential primaries. Just yesterday I got a blast from his office about health care (and of course, asking for a donation), and I wrote back an unsubscribe message saying, "Screw you, this gAyTM is closed. You think I can't be a single-issue voter? Watch me."

God save ornery old queens! - kevinchi

[ Parent ]
And how do you think those laws get changed?
By a vote of Congress.

To win that vote, we need to persuade the Democratic majority that doing what's right for us won't ruin their careers.

Attacking someone who used all the right framing and imagery to rebut every argument against equality--seriously, I couldn't have written a better editorial for a sitting US Senator--is no way to persuade the other 49 votes.

Further, we can all see that the Senate is not yet at the point of passing a DOMA or DADT repeal.

This statement is still powerful, because it gives such strong political cover to state politicians in the other 45 states.

Where the question of how a winning Democrat talks about how the law should treat our families is still very much in play.

So thanks are in order. Yes, I'd like to see repeals filed in the Senate but meanwhile, back at the state capitol, this IS what change looks like.

But wait, there's more!

[ Parent ]
yep
I can see how they should woory about their careers when repeal of DADT has 69% support in the country.  ooooh, real scary, that one.

I believe support for ENDA is even HIGHER,   ooooh, real scary on that one too

Very welcome news, but a bit sad, too
I find it very disheartening that it is news when our alleged allies decide that, perhaps, we really should be allowed fundamental human rights.

Wrong
I don't accept any of President Obama's spineless actions, yelling he won't move because he is AfricanAmerican is delusional. You have seen plenty of Presidents whom were white, both favorable and unfavorable to this cause Clinton and Bush, not take action. I'll bet for a fact you never called out Bush becaus he was white.

What you are doing is operating on white privledge. The idea that you can coopt any idea to suit your cause because you are white without thinking about what you are coopting. You have no idea what so ever it is to be African American. Few of us can go hide in a closet when the shit hits the fan because we are always seen as whom we are by the color of our skin. So we are very resentful when white homosexuals forget this.

What you should be saying is lets show parallels to the words used against AfricanAmericans: can't fly, sex fiends, not intelligent enough, to those used against homosexuals: will engage in beastiality and incest. Both sets of statements are outrageous on face, ignorant in fact and hurtful on purpose. you want to bring people to your side. It is called outreach based on understanding not privledge.

Pam broached this issue yesterday when she talked about TV commentation. You might want to read it if you are dismissing me because I am straight and AfricanAmerican

[ Parent ]
One thing Robert
David is African American. And while I do feel that his sentiment is way over the top in this case, I do understand his bitterness at the African American community, I have felt it myself.

And since I have the opportunity to say it to you (as a straight AA), we have enough straight AAs that are speaking up but you, also, are speaking from a position of hetero and (possibly) Christian privilege. However, I do welcome you as an ally.

Lieberman is a pig
He was unapologetic about his disdain for marriage equality at HRC's presidential candidate forum in 2004. He hasn't evolved a bit since then.

Someone should try telling him that that Palestinian Arabs oppose marriage equality to see if that generates a knee-jerk reaction from him in support of it. :)

So when will Dodd introduce the legislation in the Senate? And for that matter, when will Courtney, DeLauro, Himes, and Murphy do the same in the House? Not to put you on the spot, but I'm curious when the words will be met with action.

Want to save marriage equality in Maine? Ask me how! ;-)

Senator Dodd's
change to support marriage quality is most welcome. That is in stark contrast to PA state republican senator, John Eichelberger who is sponsoring legislation to prevent any "special rights" of any kind to the LGBT community. He did a radio interview on 06-19-09 where the interviewer asked him if this legislation was intended to punish gay people. His response: "They're not being punished. We're allowing them to exist.." Gee, how comforting. Does that mean I don't have to get out the Pink Triangle cloth swatches just yet? People, remember his name: EICHELBERGER. I can see how you'd confuse it with Eichmann, but they're two different people. Though cut from the same cloth.

F@#$ this
F@#$ him and Hankins. It is shut up or put up. Put up means bringing legislation to the floor of the Senate in their cases. Otherwise is just a tap on the ATM machine whether it is cash or votes.

Question
Who puts up the quotes that followed my post? I didn't and I always thought that was the poster who did it.

Nice speech.
Now I want to see Senator Dodd introduce legislation in the Senate for repeal of DOMA.

You may not be gay, but you may be next.

I don't care
what Senator Dodd's political reasons might be, His statement is very welcome, and (imop) sincere. The timing is most certainly calculated, but . . .that's exactly what we've been asking from our representatives . . .actions. And yes, statements and actions are two very different things. I'm willing to give Dodd the thanks today and keep fighting.

These individual representatives who are willing to step up to the plate and release a statement like this one will get my support, but never again to the blanket political party.

I thanked Senator Dodd for a powerful and heartfelt message. It makes a difference.

I believe that effective leaders must be able and willing to grow and change over their service. I certainly have during mine - and so has the world.

This is change I want to believe in.

maybe dodd can have a chat with "fierce advocate". n/t

"A time comes when silence is betrayal" - Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr.

Given that gay marriage is legal in CT
Dodd has an excellent "cover" for introducing DOMA repeal legislation, if his heart is truly in this battle.

He can of course, say he is representing his state's wishes. He can say he's standing up for his state's rights.

DOMA unfairly strips CT citizens of their married status, should they chose to move to another state. DOMA allows his married gay constituents to be discriminated against by the Feds, unlike his straight married constituents.

This is perhaps
the perfect reason for Dodd and every other representative from every Equality State to stand up for their constituents. . .I don't know if the term "cover" sits quite right with me, but if that's the case, so be it.

My Senators also voted for DOMA . . .Washington State, and let me tell you . . .If Senators Murray or Cantwell provided a statement like this one from Dodd, I might be persuaded to support them again but . . .only after some action on DADT (Murray in particular).  . .but we want answers from our reps on DOMA, ENDA, UAFA, etc., before any of them get another penny, hour of time or even an acknowledgement from our Family.

The silence and evasion from my State Reps . . .Senatorial and Congressional has been deafening.

I air quoted "cover"
as I meant, it's a way to get around the GOP's inevitable accusations that Dems are imposing "San Francisco Values!"

It makes a reasonable, even conservative argument against DOMA, without going too far out on the political limb for us. (Which we know they won't.)

Don't look a 'gift advocate' in the mouth...
Thank you, Senator Dodd.

Although, Diana (posted above) said:
"Sen. Chris Dodd: Supports marriage equality; supports repeal of Sec. 3 of DOMA and portability of federal benefits"

This is NOT acceptable (if true). He should be supporting the entire repeal of DOMA. Anything less is just not good enough.

Welcome Mr. Dodd...
I welcome this announcement from Senator Dodd. But I hope the good senator will excuse my abruptness as I am already so busy with a huge agenda of my own. Please excuse me if I am a bit busy right now, I am fighting with the rest of my community for what should already have been our fundamental rights as American citizens.

We also have a financial crisis of our own. It would seem that the political party that has made so many promises of aid and support have forgotten who we are. I'm sorry which party did you say you where with? It really is a shame we can't take the time to throw you a little party over your epiphany while the children of our community fight and die for their country but only if they do so in silence because the rest of the military is too homophobic to tolerate their responsibility to these warriors.

Maybe in the future we will find the time to truly celebrate your change of heart, as welcome as it is, but right now we need to focus on keeping ourselves in check while everyone who currently enjoys the many rights we do not have, preaches at us about being patient in receiving the rights our constitution and our birthright as American citizens tells us we should have already. We should find the time in the next few months and years to take the time to truly appreciate your new position.

Always thinking about it...

Politicians...
in states like Connecticut should really find very little backlash from supporting LGBT rights.  People are rather apathetic in general on the issue, which means they may not care as much as the LGBT community does about our rights, but they're not going to vote out politicians who stand with us.  And I think that an early pro-gay stance in any politician's career will be a great boon in the future.

Thanks for (what?)
I noticed in the article "77 members of Congress call for DADT discharge suspension in letter to the President" that Mr. Dodd is not one of the signers. True, "Congress" may be just the House, but if he was really "committed" he could have signed on...
As many have said, the state that he represents is already open to all marriage, what is the fallout?

Now get Reid and Biden to do the same thing!
As well as anybody else with power who voted for DOMA:

WSJ dogged Dodd Saturday for an unreported "gift"
It was in the form of a below market payment for real property in Ireland.  He is definitely under pressure for his re-election in 2010.

Please contact him
and briefly thank him. Then start writing other congresspeople and let them know that this is what we're looking for.

We have to start lobbying Congress and the President constantly from now until we get our rights. I would urge everyone to write a couple of senators and representatives everyday, as well as contacted the President and other government officials. This is how we will win our rights: stubborn persistance and constant conversation.

The looter rich much prefer working with Democrats like Obama and the Clintons - they're greedier, they fool more people and they're able to get away with a lot more than Republicans.

reposted above where it belongs. oops.

I think it's odd that anyone could have a 100% rating from HRC
Has DADT Repeal come to a vote in the Senate?

Has gender-inclusive ENDA come to a vote in the Senate?

Has DOMA Repeal come to a vote in the Senate?

Has legislation for G-I ENDA or to repeal DADT and DOMA even made it to committee yet?  Are these bills coming to the floor?  Are the senators with 100% ratings actively or passively fighting?

It's one thing to just have not fought legislation when it arises.  It's another to fight to get these things out to the floor.

Just how useful is this rating from the HRC?

Don't trust him
Dodd is struggling to survive politically. He's very unpopular in his home state, and he knows it-especially after his disastrous Presidential campaign earned him the unflattering appellation 'Senator Dudd' in the media.

He's reaching for anything that could get him enough electoral credibility, and since Equal Marriage passed in Connecticut, he knows this issue will make him look better to GLBTs and liberals in his home state.

After he gets re-elected, he'll avoid us the same way Obama did. He'll make up all kinds of excuses about how he can't introduce any bills because something more important needs his attention at the moment. He'll shove us so far onto the back burner we won't ever see the dinner plate.

Senator Dudd is an old man. He has at most maybe one term left in him before its time to retire to spend time with the family, so he doesn't have to worry about making empty promises he never intends to fulfill. He'll promise us the moon, and then just avoid the issue until he steps down in 2016.

Dodd's statement has one foot in the media closet ...
Dodd has his position statement posted at his web site under its fuzzy, feel-good, closeted title "Rights, Responsibilities, and Love".  An "out" title might be, oh, I dunno ... something like ... "Marriage Equality for LGBTs".  I'll give him credit for linking his statement at at least three places: under Podcasts & Blog Posts, Issues/Civil Rights, and Media Center/Editorials & Op Eds.

However, Dodd does not address LGBT issues directly in their own category anywhere at his web site.  And there is nothing about DOMA specifically; or DADT, ENDA, the Matthew Shepard Act, etc., under other logical places like Issues/Children & Families, Civil Rights, Health Care, Homeland Security, National Security.

So as his "brave" statement of June 21 ages out, it will disappear into the archives, and there will again be nothing at his web site about our concerns.

Yep, as several others have duly noted here, he needs to take action on our behalf, not just whisper sweet nothings.  He could start by coming out of the closet for us on his frickin' web site.  Someone with an HRC rating of 100 must have buckets-o'-links documenting his past pro-LGBT stances.  But if he prefers to start by sponsoring legislation ending DADT & DOMA, or by taking up any other significant pro-LGBT legislation, well, that would be okay too.

BTW, the Meriden Record-Journal has a weekly circulation rate of about 88,644 (I added some numbers posted at their web site).  The Hartford-Courant: 1,500,000.  The Meriden Record-Journal's circulation is 6% of the Hartford-Courant's, so what's up with publishing the statement there and not in the state-wide paper?  Quit doing the hokey-pokey already, Senator.
