It passed by voice vote, after 60 votes were tallied, so there probably won't be a roll call tally

Nice Prelude to ENDA

Five Republicans voted yes; No dems in opposition. GOP votes were Collins, Snowe, Merkowski, Voinovich and Lugar.

Brownback and the Little Peter will claim victory. Who cares? The Brownback amendment was gratuitous.

Finally I will not feel compelled to debunk the copious collection of crap that the right wing was spewing daily. Truth doesn't seem to be an important "value"
for the family values crowd.

Harry Jackson was predicting a defeat this morning. Watch out for the exploding head shrapnel. Tony Perkins can kiss my Jewish ass.

Almost don't believe it

We held a statewide call-in campaign to both Begich and Murkowski, but I didn't expect her to support it. When I called Lisa's office, the guy who answered was surprised that I wanted her to vote yes. I figured they got lots of calls against, but maybe he was surprised to get so many calls in favor. On the other hand, Begich agreed to co-sponsor, but isn't on the final list. Wonder what happened. Alaska politics is so confusing.

.....assumming Byrd and Kennedy are home sick:

7 all R:  Graham SC, Gregg NH, Corker TN (and the other guy from TN whose name I can't remember), Martinez FL, and Bond MO.   Interesting that three of the five retiring R senators skipped the voted and one other bucked the party.

I am gonna withold judgement

This thing has still got to go back into committee to combine the bills. Torpedoes off the port bow are still a very real prospect, not to mention the looming threatened veto. I am really not in the mood to hear another round of "we're sorry we did our best, can we have some more money for the next election?"

Not that simple

If I read the AP report right, it's still part of the defense bill, which contains the wasted money on those F-22s (I think). Obama threatened to veto the bill if they kept the F-22s in it.

Obama will be right to veto the bill; it shouldn't be part of the defense bill, and it's the right thing to do to stop wasting our defense dollars. Blame the Ds who attached the bill; they're playing chicken with Obama with the hate crimes bill - and its protections - as the prize.

Obama wouldn't need to veto it. And it's still wasted money.

It's funny - some Ds are playing politics and rewarding campaign contributors, using us as a shield to do it, and you're cheering them on.  Sorry, America deserves these protections without needing to funnel money to defense contractors as the price for equality.  If the F-22s money is still in there, I hope Obama vetoes.

That's how I read it

I read this as the voice vote was simply to confirm it as an amendment to the Defense Authorization Bill, with the extra "shall not infringe on First Amendment protections" language, which doesn't change any substance. A different AP article says the same thing. Of course, the Republicans attempted to filibuster, but since Dems now have 60 seats in the Senate THANK YOU MINNESOTA, they shot down the fillibuster and proceeded to vote.

Voice vote passage came immediately after supporters cleared a 60-vote procedural hurdle imposed by Republicans trying to block consideration of the legislation. That vote was 63-28.

The hate crimes bill was offered as an amendment to a must-pass defense spending bill that the Senate is expected to finish some time next week. Several Republican amendments to the hate crimes legislation still could be considered on Monday, but Thursday's vote determined that it will be part of the defense bill when it passes.

The 1968 hate crimes act covers violence related to a person's race, color, religion or national origin. Federal involvement is confined to a narrow range of circumstances, such as when the victim is using a public facility or attending a public school, serving on a jury or participating in a government program.

The proposed legislation, in addition to expanding the categories covered, ends the "federally protected activities" requirement.

This isn't over. Not by a long shot. Don't exhale just yet.

The inaction Obama has shown AND the DOJ brief

A veto of the Hate Crimes bill no matter what the planes included will be remembered as KILLING the Hate Cimes bill....PERIOD.
Then 2012 he won't get any queer votes.

Signing Statement?

Obama has already used a signing statement on a bill (I generally hated it when George W did it).  I would think that is a possible tactic to ignore the planes but allow the Hate Crimes protections.   I, too, have long looked forward to the Matthew Shepherd Bill recognition.  Finding "suicide" victims in the trunks of cars is just not right - you #^*&@# Alabama cops.

Makes me feel good about President Obama

When I was at the Stonewall reception at the White House a couple of weeks ago I was standing next to Judy Sheppard when the President walked over to her and told her he was going to give Harry Reid a call the next day to start moving the bill!

Alright!! He did it!

Health care is next, I hope there are no "pre-conditions" that exclude transgender people. This is now!

ENDA is next! They may be waiting for the fall to first hold hearings and have a report on LGB and T discrimination as a selling point!

I'm not a fan of incrementalism, but if it is there for the taking, I'll take it and reach for more.

Don't forget the UAFA.

Immigration reform is also on Obama's agenda for this year early next year.

According to Sen. Schumer we can expect a Senate immigration reform bill by Labor Day.  Hopefully the LGBT community (i.e. UAFA) will be included in the immigration reform.

Autumn, this title is misleading

The Senate got Hate Crimes onto the Defense Authorization Bill as an amendment via this voice vote, after defeating Republican attempts at a filibuster of the procedure. The Senate has NOT passed the Mathew Shepard Act yet. It has to stay part of the Defense Authorization Bill, get passed in the Senate, and it has to go back to the House for reconciliation. It is NOT ready to go up to the President's desk, and that is what this article implies. Please, PLEASE clarify this.

Why was this an amendment? It had 63 votes it could have easily passed standalone. Why the amendment games? Now Obama has to choose to make the GLBT community angry or save billions in aircraft waste. Anyone else feel like we're being used to keep some pork in the Bill?

It can be said

that being used to keep some pork in a bill means that we've finally achieved equal rights with everyone else.

I agree with you, however.  Even though it was somewhat insincere and hypocritical, I agreed with McCain when he said this shouldn't be a part of some larger, unrelated bill.

that's the problem. We are totally being used by a few D congressman to waste money.
And don't assume this 63 translates to 63 on a standalone. Some may have voted yes precisely because a combined bill is harder to stop, and shaky Ds don't want to commit to it as a standalone.
