Matt Barber is upset. The Idaho Department of Corrections recently settled a lawsuit filed by two with transgender inmates who, according to the Associated Press, "...contended they were subjected to cruel and unusual punishment because they were denied treatment for gender identity disorder.
The settlement, again according to the Associated Press, does the following:
The policy now limits the time inmates must wait for treatment, specifies how they may be diagnosed, and clarifies when they qualify for hormone therapy.
As you can imagine, this doesn't make the Liberty Counsel's Matt Barber happy at all. Remember, he's the same Matt Barber who's been concerned that healthcare reform that makes it through Congress and is signed by the President will include insurance mandates for "sex change operations." ..."Perhaps the state here might consider helping these severely disturbed individuals to get the spiritual and psychological help they need to align their falsely, self-perceived gender identity with their God-given gender reality," Barber notes.
Barber believes prison officials are doing transgendered inmates a disservice. "The American Psychological Association still considers gender confusion -- GID, gender identity disorder -- a disorder. It is a mental disorder," he contends.
According to Barber, prisons throughout the U.S. should help suffering inmates to overcome their gender delusions.
So, according to Matt Barber, the way to not treat trans patients in a medically appropriate manner is to insist instead that trans people receive reparative therapy as "appropriate treatment."
And by the way, there is no condition called "gender confusion," as Mr. Barber refers to GID. "Gender confusion" the term that conservative "Christians" like to throw around for trans people like me. If you've ever were to meet me, the one thing you can be sure of is that I'm not gender confused at all; I know what my gender is, and I know it's female.
And by the way too, I'm sure Mr. Barber's solution to having gay, lesbian, and bisexual inmates would be the same treatment of reparative therapy them as well -- yes, let's have mandatory reparative therapy for all lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people in the government's care -- it's the "Christian" thing to do, right?
