Arizona pastor's sermons call for execution of gays, Barney Frank and the President

Pastor Steven Anderson of Faithful Word Baptist Church in Tempe, Arizona is a bible-quoting hellfire and damnation sort of guy. He calls for the execution of gays in numerous sermons that you can listen to here.
"The same God who instituted the death penalty for murders is the same god who instituted the death penalty for rapists and for homosexuals, sodomites and queers"
Jeremy at Good As You has some choice ones so you don't have to give that hateful cuss any hits.

Anderson, while he's memorized The Good Book, he is woefully underinformed about a few legal matters -- he apparently wants Barney Frank to sue his pious *ss off.

"The sodomites are recruiters and you know who they are after? Your children. They are being recruited by the sodomites. They are being molested by the sodomites. They recruit through rape, they recruit through molestation, they recruit through violation"

Do you think he would be investigated by the Secret Service during Bush's terms in office? Did he think Bush deserved the death penalty for executing all those Iraqi citizens in his unnecessary military action? Just asking.

Without any evidence. That is slander, pure and simple, and he should have his sorry, lying ass dragged into court so the whole world can see his hate.

This can be proven objectively via 30+ years of the published record.

Disproving a negative is all but impossible, but this also is in the realm of objectivity - though the onus would be on the person asserting that the statement is not defamatory to come up with some proof that it is an accurate statement.

In England it would be a slam dunk - unless, of course, its an accurate statement.  And, though I'll accuse St. Barney of many things, I've never seen any indication that that would be an accurate statement.  Even though there's no specific allegation of a specific act with a specific minor, there can be no real disagreement as to what calling someone a "pedophile" means.

Here, making a defamation case out regarding the "pedophile" comment so as to meet the New York Times v. Sullivan standard would be tricky. The 'actual malice' is obvious, but St. Barney would also have to show actual monetary damages resulting from the defamatory statement.

So...

Not that I'm suggesting anything nefarious, but wouldn't it be conveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeenient if one of his campaign contributors announces that such donations will cease - citing the "pedophile" accusation as a causal factor?

Of course, it should be moot - because this clown should at this moment be spending every penny he has on a criminal defense attorney to defend himself against a valid criminal charge stemming from the Obama comments (though I think it would be far more interesting if the charge related to his words - interpreted as being a threat against a certain former president.)

The Defense of Free Speech
In this case is...

Was it true?
There was an obligation to provide information.
An expression of an opinion.

I don't think stating as a fact that Barney Frank is a pedophile passes any of those defenses because it is not true, the speaker was not obligated to provide information (such as warning the public about a prosecuted pedophile), and it is not his opinion because he has no substantive information to back his claim other than his bigoted opinion that all gays are pedophiles--but that "opinion" doesn't absolve him in this case because he tried to state as fact that Frank was a pedophile, meaning he didn't make a generalized opinion statement about a group (although he did earlier in his rantings).

He could call Barney a lot of things and I would not have raised the defamation issue, but when you accuse someone of breaking the law (which is how he is using the word pedophile here) it does cross the line in my book.

Otherwise we should just do away with all defamation laws.

He sounds like he is transferring the hatred/fear he has for those internal feelings and hatred of himself for having them onto others. My gaydar went wild when I read his rant. I would like to gather hundreds of gay families and go fill this man's church on a sunday for services and just smile at him while he preaches that gays should be executed. It is easy to scream "kill them" to the choir, it is much different to say it to a room filled with the faces of those you want killed.  Perhaps we could all wear shirts that say, "I am one of the sodomites you want killed" and have our kids wear shirts that say, why do you want to kill my mom?

I'm thankful for guys like this and Fred Phelps. I wouldn't doubt for a minute that people like Tony Perkins feel exactly the same way, but don't dare saying so in public for fear of compromising whatever semblance of respectability they might have.

It's really the polite hatred of people like Perkins that's the most insidious because it makes the irrational look reasonable. This guy makes it obvious what the religious right homophobes are all about.

In this case, a "christian" is a Christian is a Christian: gay people collectively have never called for the execution of ANY group of people, and apparently no Christian stood up in the defense of gay people when the exterminations were proposed by Christians.

Sorry to the more forgiving types out there: calling for the execution of any group of people - 20ish years ago, no less - is not something to gloss over and make it less of a threat than what it is.

... let me play armchair psychologist for a moment. Here's my take on this guy.

1. He was molested when he was younger by some male adult in his family, and has harbored anger and bitterness against this person ever since. If this is true, he has clearly never received the kind of therapy and assistance needed to overcome such a personal violation. Instead, it comes out through his preaching, which is more of a cry for help than anything.

2. He's same-sex attracted, and this partially explains his attraction to fundamentalism, which claims to have all the answers to every problem in life. Despite marrying young, having plenty of kids, founding a church and running soul-winning campaigns, he still feels he's not doing enough to "kill" what's deep inside him. (Hence, the "thorn in the flesh" sermon on his website.) So, he outwardly projects his anger and hatred of this part of himself through his sermons.

It's either one or the other... or possibly both.

From what I've read on his family blog and in related news reports, he's already been involved in two confrontations with authorities-one at a hospital, and the other at a border patrol checkpoint. Regardless of whether the authorities' response in either case was excessive (and it may have been), he clearly did something to provoke the response in both incidents.

This man is a ticking time bomb of anger, and something bad is going to happen if he doesn't seek compassionate, professional help to deal with whatever is eating away at him. Unfortunately, being an extreme fundamentalist (he's a "KJV-only" literalist), he likely won't seek help from anyone but unlicensed Christian "counselors" who believe the same exact way he does and can only enable him, not help him.

Yes, it's easy to point at the fundie and yell, "Hater!" but there is a deeper reason for this that we need to recognize. I've seen this played out over and over and over with extreme fundamentalist types (or anyone who has such animus against GLBT people). It's really tragic.

And there's not much anyone can do UNTIL he explodes, and is put away for a long time.

I've studied fundamentalist "christian"/serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer for the past year or so, and he slipped through the cracks so many times - even with multiple arrests during the decade prior to his apartment full of body parts was discovered.

A street preacher in Milwaukee befriended him, and even he couldn't help Jeffrey.

His probation officer was too lazy to stop by his apartment, and never did once after Jeffrey was convicted of molesting a teenager (ironically whose younger brother, Konerak, had also escaped from Dahmer years later, and was handed right back to him by the police).  

Nothings's going to stop him until he does something drastic.

As far as facts are concerned, only the pastor would be able to confirm what they are, and that isn't going to happen anytime soon.

If you're offended by the fact that molestation and/or latent homosexuality is almost always the trigger when it comes to this level of personal vitriol against GLBT people... I can't help that.  I guess you'll just have to be offended.

People--even religious people--don't just randomly spew this kind of consistent, ongoing anti-gay anger.  There has to be a trigger from personal life experience, and given that I've grown up amongst fundamentalists and seen this firsthand, I know what I'm talking about.

The "has to be" is in regards to a personal trigger.  I never said my theories about what that personal trigger might be... "had to be."  That's why I used the word "if."  I provided two likely theories.  You named two others.

The chances of this man being a sociopath, as you infer, is always a possibility... but I don't think it's very likely.  And the chances of someone just being "nuts" is even smaller.  Their theological position may be based on absurd assumptions and/or just plain ignorant of reality, but that automatically does not make someone "nuts."

Yes, it's fun to call people names... especially religious people.  We sure feel better about ourselves when we do it.  But it's not very illuminating or helpful to the discussion.

My point stands.  This man has personal issues, and it's very likely one of the two theories I suggested.

I live with a psychologist and have co-authored some books with him and I think you're offering too simplistic an explanation of this kind of hatred.

Human psychology is much more complex than that, and his kind of ranting could be multiply-determined or have determinants you or I would never guess at.

Homosexuality may for instance be a metaphor to him for something abominable and so our attempt to read that he speaks like this ergo he must have been molested or must be gay himself is overly simplistic.

That doesn't invalidate in any way what you've observed, it simply enlarges the field of speculation.

The novel and then film "Elmer Gantry" is just as valid as it was back in the day. So many hucksters are making a living off people's faith by preaching to them and creating parasitic "churches." (Jim and Tammy Bakker elevated this to an artform that came crashing down around them.) 1) With the Bakkers, it WAS a good show; there was the faint recognition (depeding on the intensity of your faith)that it was entertainment. It was always kinda fun to watch them, particularly to guess how long it would be before Tammy cried and how massscra wold run. That was really the whole hook.

And the Bakkers did not set out to intentionally harm or defame anyone, not even the LGBT community.

That said, I have a somewhat unpleasant question: if this video had featured someone else, say, a brown-skinned latino born in the USA, making exactly the same speech (except for the dialect, mayhap), would it have engendered screams of police brutality on this blog?

If what he says about the police dog is true, it seems possible that the agents manufactured a convenient excuse to search his vehicle. I don’t know what really happened, of course, and I am too lazy to even bother looking for additional reports.

It occurs to me, though, that just because the guy is a waste of oxygen and an embarassment to the human race does not mean that he was not victimized. (Again, not that I know whether he was or wasn’t.)

Put another way: as much as I enjoy the schadenfreude, perhaps more than one sack of shit has been identified in this thread.

I didn't understand one aspect of his story. I've been stopped by the border patrol for suspicious (and easily explained) behaviors while driving at night (this was many years ago). I'd be pissed off because they sometimes would appear out of nowhere, in plain clothes and shining lights in my eyes after I pulled over. Nevertheless, I'd make my explanations and let them search my vehicle since I had nothing to hide and wanted to be on my way.

These days, I might stand on my rights and insist they get a search warrant, while still being amiable and chatty. Why did this nutcase lock himself in his car and refuse to come out? Why didn't he insist that they get a search warrant? Or do I misunderstand? Is the (probably phony) hit by the sniffer dog all the probable cause they needed?

After the evisceration of the Fourth Amendment by Scalia et al, police know that--on the scene--they have almost unlimited discretion. In court they need merely select from one of a number of exceptions to the 4th; or, they can invent a "probable cause" (after the fact, if necessary).

It's a difficult choice: who, in this situation, is more infuriating and loathsome?

Actually, I wish Barney Frank WOULD sue this demon. I can think of two cases: Missouri Court of Appeals, Hester v. Barnett, 723 S.W.2d 544(1987)  "The use of the pulpit as the pretext for the practice of religion, but as the occasion for intentional defamation []is neither justified by privilege nor protected by the free exercise clause."

McNair v. Worldwide church of God, 197 Cal. App 3d 363(1987). A California appeals court found the plaintiff could recover damages for defamatory remarks made during the course of a doctrinal explanation by a duly authorized minister by meeting the heightened test of malice applied to public figure libel cases.

What Consequences Will Anderson Face?
Several interesting ideas have come up here about what other people should do.  Here's another.

A.  Rev Anderson preached a sermon about his religious beliefs in his church to his congregation.  1st Amendment - Freedom of Religion - no problem

B.  Rev. Anderson published an audio version of his sermon on his church's website.  Sermon on CHURCH website.  1st Amendment - no problem

C.  Rev. Anderson briefly posted a video of his sermon on YouTube for the public to hear and be moved by his words.  No sermon because not in context of worship service.  No church and no church affiliation.  No religious affiliation at all.  1st Amendment Freedom of Religion does not apply.  Left with 1st Amendment Freedom of Speech ....

However, Rev. Anderson has

Threatened the President
Defamed Congressman Frank of Massachusetts

AND

Defamed and called for the murder of every gay and lesbian in the world.

As a gay man, this frightens me especially given my view of the USA at the current time.  As a gay man this depresses me.  I know I am not alone.

But I am not a lawyer.  It seems to me that a lawyer ought to be able to sue Rev Anderson as a private person for damages and punitive damages for the brief time his video was on YouTube.  I will be talking about this ass with medicare therapist this week.  I bet I am not alone.

So a nice class action law suit against this Anderson as an individual seems in order to me.  Why oh why did I not listen to my Mom and go to Law School!!!  LOL

PS  It would be cold day in hell before I would take my child into his church to listen to his hate in an act of loving confrontation.  Brrrr  The very thought of such sends chills down my back.

What is truly frightening about Anderson's ravings is that his idea of a perfect America -- a nation in which gay persons are executed merely for being who they are -- is that he represents, albeit in extreme form, the opinions of members of organization such as the "American Family Association", the "Family Research Council", "Focus on the Family", etc.  His ravings represent the logical end point of the ravings of members of these organizations, and his calls for the execution of gay persons represent the unstated desires of so many of the right-wing, anti-gay extremists who gravitate to these organizations.  There is nothing funny about the culture wars when one of its leading proponents advocates the execution of gay men and lesbians; and there is nothing amusing about this type of Bible-thumping when a leading proponent of right-wing views uses the Bible as justification for a hate-filled rant...

It is people like this who have influenced the Ugandan politicians to pass an "anti-homosexuality bill" that would result in the execution of almost all gay men and lesbians in Uganda -- as well as those Ugandans who commit such "crimes" whilst resident in other nations.  With Africa's history of pogroms in which literally millions of people have been slaughtered within a period of a few weeks (as occurred in Rwanda), it is depressingly likely that this bill will become law, and that Uganda will become the next African nation to stage a massacre of its own citizens.

We are living in very dangerous times.  State after state in the US has enacted constitutional amendments to prohibit the recognition of gay marriage; and some states (e.g. Nebraska) amended their state constitutions in such a manner as to deprive gay persons living in those states of any form of recognition of their relationships whatsoever (including the recognition of domestic partnerships).

Our President, who assured us that he would be a "fierce advocate" for justice for gay Americans, has turned his back on his word.  Once again -- as has occurred on countless past occasions -- the gay community became the first community to be jettisoned in a politician's bid to shore up his falling approval ratings.

Many of the Republicans believe that gay persons "recruit" children; and there has been a deafening silence from the Democrats, who are supposedly more progressive with respect to social issues.
