Blend-o-licious endorsements...

The Christian Civic League of Maine's Mike Hein calls Pam's House Blend:
"a leading source of radical homosexual propaganda, anti-Christian bigotry, and radical transgender advocacy."

He is "praying that Pam Spaulding will "turn away from her wicked and sinful promotion of homosexual behavior." (CCLM's web site, 10/15/07)

Ex-gay "Christian" activist James Hartline on Pam:
"I have been mocked over and over again by ungodly and unprincipled anti-christian lesbians."
(from "Six Years In Sodom: From The Journal Of James Hartline," 9/4/2006, written from the "homosexual stronghold" of Hillcrest in San Diego).

"Pam is a 'twisted lesbian sister' and an 'embittered lesbian' of the 'self-imposed gutteral experiences of the gay ghetto.'" -- 9/5/2008

Peter LaBarbera of Americans for Truth Against Homosexuality heartily endorses the Blend, calling Pam:

A "vicious anti-Christian lesbian activist."
(Concerned Women for America's radio show [9:15], 1/25/07)

"A nutty lesbian blogger."
(MassResistance radio show [16:25], 2/3/07)

Pam's House Blend always seems to find these sick f*cks. The area of the country she is in? The home state of her wife? I know, they are everywhere. Pam just does such a great job of bringing them out into the light.

Kansas U.S. Rep. Lynn Jenkins - the GOP needs a 'great white hope'

by: Pam Spaulding

Wed Aug 26, 2009 at 23:11:50 PM EDT

Boy, we have seen the racist dog whistle become quite audible these days, but when called out these Rethugs still find a way to deny that's what's going on.

U.S. Rep. Lynn Jenkins offered encouragement to conservatives at a town hall forum that the Republican Party would embrace a "great white hope" capable of thwarting the political agenda endorsed by Democrats who control Congress and President Barack Obama.

Jenkins, a Topeka Republican in her first term in Congress, shared thoughts about the GOP's political future during an Aug. 19 forum at Fisher Community Center in the northeast Kansas community of Hiawatha.

..."Republicans are struggling right now to find the great white hope," Jenkins said to the crowd. "I suggest to any of you who are concerned about that, who are Republican, there are some great young Republican minds in Washington."

It's worth noting that all of the Republicans Jenkins points out as prospects (Cantor, Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., and Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis.) are white. Just a coinkydink. And here comes the hilarious "it's not racist" denial from the spokesbot for Jenkins, Mary Geiger:

Mary Geiger, a spokeswoman for Jenkins, said the reference to a great white hope wasn't meant to denote a preference by Jenkins for politicians of a particular "race, creed or any background." Jenkins was expressing faith fellow GOP representatives in the House would be key players in returning Republicans to a leadership role in Washington, Geiger said.

"There may be some misunderstanding there when she talked about the great white hope," Geiger said. "What she meant by it is they have a bright future. They're bright lights within the party."

Big, bright white Broadway lights, apparently; the Topeka Capital Journal's Tim Carpenter pointed out the obvious.

The phrase "great white hope" is frequently tied to racist attitudes permeating the United States when heavyweight boxing champion Jack Johnson fought in the early 1900s. Reaction to the first black man to reign as champion was intense enough to build support for a campaign to find a white fighter capable of reclaiming the title from Johnson.

Yikes
"great white hope"
Even putting the racism aside - talk about fossilized battle cries.  I don't think I've heard anyone utter that phrase since Gerry Cooney took on Larry Holmes in 1982....

and lost.

>^..^<

Well, that's because these people ARE fossils.
They're on display so that "not real" Americans (read: sane ones) can remember why we need to shelve the Grand Old Party for good!

I'm a fan of boxing
I've heard that phrase used right until the end of the 90s, though in ever decreasing occurrences.

The phrase pretty much only died in boxing when 2 things happened: many Americans stopped being interested in boxing, and the focus in boxing shifted to the lighter weight classes.

[ Parent ]
And while the phrase itself is no longer used in boxing
there is still lingering traces of the feeling behind the phrase.

I'll let YouTube do the talking...
This will give you a history of the term. Broadway play, 1970 film, etc.

She is a nightmare
I live in this district which is hard enough as an out lesbian, but come on... Nancy Boyda was amazing for this district she even voted for ENDA.  Jenkins campaigned on this idea that Boyda was too liberal and Jim Ryun who held the district before that was too conservative and she would be the true mod... but she's voted with leadership every chance she got!?  So what gives?  Wish the state party could recruit someone to run against her!

Perhaps we should be expecting a 2012 run from Rep. Jenkins as well, then?
Gee whiz, all these qualified candidates are making me reconsider my support for Palin for the GOP nomination in 2012! :D

I think this is a stretch
Although I am sure that she (like the rest of the GOP) has some race issues (while also being openly homophobic of course ) I do think that it is kind of ridiculous to assume that she was trying to get across some kind of coded racial message. I really do think she meant it as Geiger said.

I mean...I use that phrase from time to time too.

Okay
Maybe it was bad...I just read up a little more about it and its sordid history.

I can see it clearer now.

(Dang I should really stop using that phrase...)

Thanks for getting back tbaxfer...

As stated that has been a RACIST comment since the early 1900's.  Too bad for her that the Greatest WHITE topped White Hope this country has seen in a long while just died..... but his heart encompasses the whole American spectrum and alway has.

Hers is so small as to be absolutely invisible.

Some race issues?
Immigration is a race issue in the States
Healthcare is a race issue, and a women's issue.
The President himself has become a race issue.

They are all about a priviledged few whites inciting a populist, bigoted base to keep power where they have it and seize it where they do not.

She meant
You can be any race, color, or creed....on the outside,  as long as you are a great white hope INSIDE.

But don't forget, there are certain things that can change such a status!

Well, I Have to Hand It to Her...
While most Republicans these days are busy encoding their racism every which way, and yet still trying to get enough out there to feed the hungry masses, here's Representative Jenkins, a REAL American who just comes right out and says what she means!

But why have your "spokesbot" (LOVE that term, by the way) try to cover your tracks, Jenkins? Surely Republicans like yourself have such a tenuous grasp of history that you won't recall what happened to all those segregation-platform candidates a few decades ago! Repeat history, why dontcha, and let us sit back and enjoy the results!

I feel sick.

I think almost everyone knows what she meant...
The issue is that ignorance is no excuse for racism. If I "meant" to salute someone I don't knock my heels together and raise my hand to the sky shouting "hile hitler". At some point, especially as a public representative you should also be a student of history and stop assuming you are being misunderstood when it is you that is creating the misunderstanding in the first place. I personal blame the philosophy of the "color blind" society. Too many people wrongly embrace the idea of seeing no color as tolerance, when in truth a color blind philosophy only creates an excuse for not seeing the racism already built into our culture and history.

Always thinking about it...

I love your analogy
"Yeah, just because she used a Nazi salute and said heil Hitler that doesn't mean she meant it that way."

Jenkins is 46. She is old enough to have heard the phrase in the racist context for which it orginated many times.

To say that she meant it any other way is ridiculous.

The phrase "great white hope" is frequently tied to racist attitudes...

That's an understatement! Anyone care to give examples of when the phrase has not been tied to racist attitudes?

When you look for the bad in mankind, expecting to find it, you surely will.

Can't really think of any
Contrasting it with another phrase: Saying there's a "black mark on someone's record" could carry racism, depending on the context.  But in practice, it almost always carries an innocent meaning - a reference to "darkness" as the unknown (and therefore negative, since it's always been feared by humanity, at least before the invention of the flashlight.  :-D)

By contrast, there's no innocent meaning that could possibly be attached to the phrase "great white hope".  It arose with racial connotations, and has always carried them.  Even with my tendency not to be super-P.C., I've got to say this is a clear case of racism on Jenkins' part.

Putting a woman's face on misogyny and racism
The Republicans seem to think that it is a winning strategy.

There are no "great young minds" in the republican party that would cater to the base of religiously obsessed, homophobic, misogynistic, racist, treasonous advocates of a fascist overthrow of the government and assasination the a democratically elected leadership. "Great young minds don't hold such views. Only glib minds do.

The first step to a cure is admitting there is a problem
From the McCain/Palin Rallies these folks have demonstrated their racist and bigoted views.  Back then they were calling Obama a terrorist and a secret Muslim.

Nothing was truly said back then except for one time when McCain had to calm the crap down.  They let the rest of it fester and become what we are witnessing today.

Funny thing is Obama is trying to win these folks over at the same time shitting on his base.  BASE = Those who want the troops home from Iraq, War Crimes Prosecuted and our strong advocate for LGBT rights.

If I make sense? it was quite by accident.

Muslim women were some of the best feminists that I knew
in my University days.

As James Connolly said

At this point
the GOP should be looking for any hope they can find, regardless of color.  But they're so entrenched in their 18th century view of the world, if one of them was drowning and you threw a lifeline, they'd stop and ask if it was made by a white Christian before grabbing hold of it.

Americans suffer from an ignorance that is not only colossal, but sacred.  --James Baldwin

"...you threw a lifeline..."
Actually, I think he'd grab the lifeline, let you pull him to safety, then instead of thanking you say that God saved him and you were simply a his instrument. Later, he'll tell people that being saved by God is proof of his superiority and gives him the right to rule over others.

San Fernando Valley
There is a culturally and politically backward part of L.A. called the valley, where I was at a gym one evening.  Some women asked a guy to go to aerobics with them.  He replied: "Aerobics?  No, I'd look like one of Jerry's kids."  I realized that there is a segment of the population that has no mental filters of any sort, that can easily and unashamedly blurt out anything without worrying about bothering or offending anyone else.  I guess republicans are the valley writ large.

Here's a hint...
Lynn, if you're starting off with "Great White..." and the next word is NOT "Shark" you're probably midway through saying something racist and offensive.
