Blend-o-licious endorsements...

The Christian Civic League of Maine's Mike Hein calls Pam's House Blend:
"a leading source of radical homosexual propaganda, anti-Christian bigotry, and radical transgender advocacy."

He is "praying that Pam Spaulding will "turn away from her wicked and sinful promotion of homosexual behavior." (CCLM's web site, 10/15/07)

Ex-gay "Christian" activist James Hartline on Pam:
"I have been mocked over and over again by ungodly and unprincipled anti-christian lesbians."
(from "Six Years In Sodom: From The Journal Of James Hartline," 9/4/2006, written from the "homosexual stronghold" of Hillcrest in San Diego).

"Pam is a 'twisted lesbian sister' and an 'embittered lesbian' of the 'self-imposed gutteral experiences of the gay ghetto.'" -- 9/5/2008

Peter LaBarbera of Americans for Truth Against Homosexuality heartily endorses the Blend, calling Pam:

A "vicious anti-Christian lesbian activist."
(Concerned Women for America's radio show [9:15], 1/25/07)

"A nutty lesbian blogger."
(MassResistance radio show [16:25], 2/3/07)

Pam's House Blend always seems to find these sick f*cks. The area of the country she is in? The home state of her wife? I know, they are everywhere. Pam just does such a great job of bringing them out into the light.

Stand For Marriage Maine's First TV Ad: No Teacher or Waitress- But A Boston College Professor???

by: Louise

Tue Sep 15, 2009 at 09:33:30 AM EDT

Are you freaking KIDDING ME???

After all of the hype about hiring native Mainers to portray a teacher or waitress for their "Yes On 1" ad...

Not to mention all of SFMM's wailing regarding "No On 1" bringing in out-of-staters (can we just go ahead and call bullsh*t on this one, once and for all?) into the current referendum battle...

Stand For Marriage Maine employs a law professor from Boston College? They couldn't even find a MAINE prof?

I need proof. Roll the film!

It's not even a good commercial- obviously not filmed in Maine, the points they are trying to make are muddled, and right down to the music, it consists of nothing but pure scare tactics and "EEKS PROTEKT TEH CHILDRUN!" mentality.

So who is this professor? More below the fold...

Louise :: Stand For Marriage Maine's First TV Ad: No Teacher or Waitress- But A Boston College Professor???
Let's see:

Scott Fitzgibbon spoke with New England Cable Network (NECN) regarding same-sex marriage in December 2004.

He testified in 2005 regarding DOMA.

(h/t Blender Donna)

He wrote a paper in January 2007 entitled "Procreative Justice And The Recognition Of Marriage" It begins:

INTRODUCTION

If you procreate at all, you should try to do it well. If you and another person procreate together, you should try for a good relationship. Goodness in procreation and goodness in a procreative relationship are the subjects of this paper. More specifically, justice in procreation is the subject. Justice makes special demands on those who procreate. It applies to the associations they establish to conduct the projects of procreation.

His poor students; this is a garbled nonsensical beginning to a 39 page journey of blather and twaddle.

And it has NOTHING TO DO WITH MARRIAGE RIGHTS FOR ALL IN MAINE.

Colossal fail for Stand for Marriage Maine...

And an unnecessary embarrassment for an internationally recognized institution of higher learning.

It is utterly shameful imo that Professor Fitzgibbon decided not to comment upon Maine's equal marriage law as a concerned civilian, but as a paid hack who needed to drag his employer's good name through the mud along behind him.

To lend credence to his weightless words.

To use the worldwide known label of "Boston College" as a platform of celebrity.

And he certainly has no connection to Maine or our marriage debate whatsoever.

For shame, Scott Fitzgibbon.

Jeremy Hooper's response with video
California redux!

WEB-only videos by our side mean NOTHING! Throwing money at a campaign that ONLY addresses "fairness" is money thrown away.

1. Unless Web-only videos contain kittens/puppies/babies doing "funny things," prison inmates line dancing, or cheesecake/beefcake they are ONLY going to be viewed by people who ALREADY support marriage equality. ONLY broadcast TV and radio "ads" reach "moveable middle" voters.

2. "Moveable middle" voters won't give a flying fuck about "fairness" if you don't convince them that their kids are NOT in "danger," won't be "taught homosexuality," etc., etc. Where is No on 1's response to the prof's ad? IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN RECORDED WEEKS AGO IN ANTICIPATION OF THE "SAVE OUR CHILDREN MESSAGE" THAT HAS WORKED FROM ANITA BRYANT THROUGH PROP 8 REGARDLESS OF WHO THE HOMOHATERS WOULD GET TO DELIVER IT.

3. PLEASE, PLEASE DON'T MAKE THE SAME MISTAKES the No on 8 people did. It ain't true, it ain't fair, but IT IS ALL ABOUT THE CHILDREN!

The ads are in the can already Michael.

All that is required is money for air time.

Question:  What does an atheist do when they fall to the floor and start "speaking in tongues"?

Answer: Get a CAT scan.

[ Parent ]
YES!! :)
Please folks; twitter FB etc the living hell out of this and the above request for cash.

NOW IS THE TIME- IT's "MAKE OR BREAK".

the only difference
is that when a Pepperdine Law School professor lied in California's "Yes on 8" ads, there was no need of an asterisk to say his opinion was not necessarily that of his academic employer. After all, he worked for Ken Starr — who was pretending at the time to have nothing to do with Prop 8 (which he drafted behind the scenes, and of course defended in front of the Supreme Court).

So is Boston College's Scott Fitzgibbon a member of the LDS Church, just like Pepperdine's Richard Peterson (whose son let slip that he had explicit permission from his employer to appear in a deceitful Yes-on-8 ad), like the Wirthlins (who lied about their son being forced to hear about gay marriage in a Massachusetts school), and like all the other Mormons on the Yes-on-8 bus, all the Mormons working the phones from out of state, and all the Mormons going door-to-door in California to take away equality? How many Mormons have been drafted into lying for this cause?  Is that what being a Mormon is all about?

I'll post my xtranormal commercial again just for laughs...

SFMM's Facebook
has some great comments:

One person pretty much rotflao's and asks where the real ad is.

Another had this to say:

A second collection at Mass on Sunday, and this is what Maine's Catholics get? That money should have gone toward keeping parish churches and schools open.

still following the CA model
by using a professor as a 'voice of reasoned authority' to give the same tired warning.  music is the same/similar too.  at least in california they could find a local prof thoug.  bodes well that no mainers applied, lol!  would be great to hear from a mainer approached to do the job who refused.

This guy is a go-to gadfly for this crap.

He has testified in the US Senate, has numerous "scholarly articles" decrying perceived dangers (term used VERY loosly) and has donated over $60,000 cash to various congressional and senate races since 2002.

My guess is that he either volunteered, or knows Maggie personally and they went for the low hanging fruit rather than even try to get a local spokesman.

Either way, the ad is classic "scare the populace" styling - I am surprised they left off the mushroom cloud ending.

Question:  What does an atheist do when they fall to the floor and start "speaking in tongues"?

Answer: Get a CAT scan.

[ Parent ]
You're all missing the point.

It doesn't matter what OUR SIDE thinks about it. If we're not answering the "script" they could duct tape a misspelled sign to a mangy cat saying "Save our chilren!" and run it through town and still WIN.

I say this with love. Tough love, but love: SNAP OUT OF THE SELF-RIGHTEOUSNESS AND NAIVETE BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE!

[ Parent ]
Thank you, Michael
Of course, GLBT's would know that the ad is nonsense. But to, say, a married couple with children who is undecided about the issue of marriage equality? They could be convinced in their minds the marriage equality is a threat to their children; that was the California script.

Still, it seems as if we are either reacting to what the bigots do (as opposed to taking the offensive) or not answering the bigots at all.

[ Parent ]
Have you written No On 1 with your various concerns, Michael?
Now or at any time over the past 9 months?

If not, PLEASE DO. :)

Scolding Blenders is not helping forward any cause that I can see... and I apologize to you if my interpretation is incorrect.

Writing No On One is writing to no one
To the best of my knowledge, the email address is a black hole (info@protectmaineequality.org). I have written several times. I also volunteered to "blog for equality." Response? Nada, zip, nothing.

They haven't even put up a coherent set of talking points. NOM's claims are easily debunked. I offered to provide same. I also offered to share some ideas. I pointed out that I have been the CEO of a large not-for-profit. Does Jesse feel that he has a monopoly on wisdom?

Response? Nothing.

emailing a campaign that is in full swing
often leads nowhere.  there simply isn't the volunteer power to answer all the emails because everyone is busy working on the campaign itself.  but if you have time to volunteer to be an email referee for them, i'm sure they would appreciate the offer.  to make such an offer your best bet is to go to the campaign office in person and let them know how you can help them.

Call the Campaign - That Works
Davidhart, you should call the campaign during business hours - I was able to get a hold of them that way.

Louise, I've said this before
I've emailed and such before, too -- zero response. Even before the campaign was in "full swing".

I also commented on Jesse's blog post on DKos asking him to comment on these same concerns. The response: 0.

The blog posts about how "this won't fly with the locals" and "this is all they've got?" are nice derision and all, but people don't need a whole lot of reason to discriminate. I don't care where they live, or who's telling them to do it. "THINK OF THE CHILDREN!" is repeatedly an effective way to screw us if we don't factually, clearly, boldy refute the argument. Cushy soft-sell emotion spots don't counter it.

We have to counter these arguments. No On 1 had the Calfornia Prop 8 formula as an example to learn from, and Yes On 1 is using that formula precisely. I have yet to see No On 1 refute or pre-empt this formula.

The Nemitz column from the PPH was a nice start...did it go out in print, or was it just online?

What No On 1 needs is a state school board member or other high-ranking education official stating what's in the bill and what's not, and how educational curricula are really developed in the state, much as Nemitz did so simply in his column. It's not hard. It is what must be done.

The average uninformed voter will fall for this fact-free fearmongering without a clear counter. Yes On 1 doesn't have a high bar to reach. The ad doesn't have to be high-quality. It just has to work, and this was the golden arrow for Yes On 8.

Nemitz was both print and online
In fact, all of my newspaper links are both:

Bangor Daily News

Kennebec Journal

Lewiston Sun Journal

Maine Sentinel

Portland Press Herald

Sweet -
so it went out in print syndicated in all those papers?

If it did, that's wonderful news.

[ Parent ]
Yup.
And the comments online to all of these various stories that I have linked time and again all year sometimes number well into the hundreds; I've seen over 700 before!

That's alot for here...

I just hope...
...that it doesn't take three tries to keep marriage equality, like it did with the nondiscrimination acts.

I know Jesse led the "Maine Won't Discriminate" campaign. This is gonna be so much uglier than that one. But I am hopeful.

[ Parent ]
ElsieElsie, have you seen this clip?
It always shakes me and I choke up, just as Betsy does:

I hope it doesn't take 3 times and frankly, it will be close. But these folks will never give up.

I like that speech
"We have enemies in Maine. They are poverty, disease, ignorance. They are NOT gay people!"

I think that would be a marvelous clip to show, along with John Baldacci's clips.

Make the vote a referendum on the catholics and mormons and their institutionalized gay hate and their serial child abuse and their criminal money laundering, and we will win. People will turn out to vote against something they despise more than they will turn out to vote for something that doesn't really affect them one way or the other.

God save ornery old queens! - kevinchi

[ Parent ]
Another Mormon?
The law professor from Pepperdine University that we saw in "Yes on 8" ads was a Mormon.

If not mormon, then catholic
The Dean of BC Law school, John Garvey, is a good ol' boy catholic who blames gays for Catholic Charities stopping adoptions.

It's the same shit all over again, and I guarantee the Catholic Charities adoption issue will be the next soiled diaper they trot out.

My idea for an ad:

VOICEOVER: The Catholic Church is closing parishes and schools all over Maine, leaving many of the faithful stranded without help during these hard economic times. But in April the Portland diocese still saw fit to pay signature gatherers $100,000 in order to persecute law-abiding gay people who just want to protect their families. This past Sunday the diocese took up a second collection to fund the attacks against gay and lesbian couples and their children. The Catholic Church is taking money away from its own needy congregants to attack the families of loving, committed gay citizens, and is bearing false witness against them. This isn't "love your neighbor." Reject the hate. Reject the lies. Vote No On One, and say yes to civil marriage equality.

God save ornery old queens! - kevinchi

[ Parent ]
Ridiculous... BUT...
We shouldn't take it lightly. After all, Frank Schubert is using the same dirty tricks that helped him win Prop H8 in Cali. We can't let him carpetbag his way to another win for bigotry in Maine.

Act on Principles and make equality happen.

My Main Maine Concern,
Is that the wingers will use President Obama's words again OMOW BS again.  I am sure our fierce advocate will do nothing, but his past words will hurt us over and over until he changes his tune.

If I make sense? it was quite by accident.

So much for
the Yes on 1 campaign's promise to stick to the truth.  I'm shocked, really.

Okay, I donated again ...
I appreciate the updates here on PHB.

When I was growing up in Massachusetts, there was a lot of intra-state rivalry in New England.  "Cow Hampshire."  "Taxachusetts."  Oh, the devastating wit.  Well, "Mass-holes" is pretty funny.

If any of that rivalry still exists (or perhaps independence is more accurate), maybe it is a good thing that SfM's first ad features a Boston College professor.  The ad, seeking to influence a matter concerning Mainers, would immediately be suspect regardless of the message.

Listen to your fairy Godmother, my dear: you will go to the ball.

Oh yeah, re: rivalry
Mainers love to hang onto old-fashioned ways like that!

Despite my bias, I think I can say that this is not a good ad
Even though I despise these people, I would give them credit for a good ad.  But this is not a good ad.  That professor is an unknown to the viewer.  He is not all that persuasive in his delivery.  And they lead with the "threat" of lawsuits, not schools.  Also, nice to see that David Parker's lawsuit is hauled out once again.  Odd that even though millions of schoolkids in MA schools must have been exposed to gay sex lessons since 2004, the only ones we hear about are the same 2 disgruntled families - the Parkers and the Wirthlins.

Hopefully No on 1 has a response ad ready to go quickly.  Speed is the key here, so this is the first highly visible test of No on 1's effectiveness.

My Video Response
Here's my video response that I did this morning.  My apologies for the video quality (i.e. it's a bit dark), as I had a limited amount of time to do it.

the ad's premise is already ahead of us
What Parker v. Hurley about was not the parents' seeking relief from some fancied injury. They wanted the courts to impose this:

(1) to provide an opportunity to exempt their children from "classroom presentations or discussions the intent of which is to have children accept the validity of, embrace, affirm, or celebrate views of human sexuality, gender identity, and marriage constructs," (2) to allow the parents to observe any such classroom discussions, and (3) to not present any "materials graphically depicting homosexual physical contact" to students before the seventh grade.

http://www.ca1.uscourts.gov/cg...

They wanted to dictate curricula, in other words, but that's not the ad's premise, false as it is. Oh, BTW, the "AP headline" was actually a capture from a right-wing website.

FWIW.

here's the AP "headline"
Link at americablog.

Lying premise, lying conclusion. So much for not bearing false witness, hey?

Boston College: From Mary Daly to Scott Fitzgibbon
simply sad. From Daly's Lesbian radicalism to Fitzgibbon's elitist anti -gay agenda.

I tell you Chica that no greater abomination exists than women denying their spirit of sisterhood and instead becoming the oppressor. -Rebeca, Universidad Complutense de Madrid
