The Christian Civic League of Maine's Mike Hein calls Pam's House Blend:
"a leading source of radical homosexual propaganda, anti-Christian bigotry, and radical transgender advocacy."

He is "praying that Pam Spaulding will "turn away from her wicked and sinful promotion of homosexual behavior." (CCLM's web site, 10/15/07)

Ex-gay "Christian" activist James Hartline on Pam:
"I have been mocked over and over again by ungodly and unprincipled anti-christian lesbians."
(from "Six Years In Sodom: From The Journal Of James Hartline," 9/4/2006, written from the "homosexual stronghold" of Hillcrest in San Diego).

"Pam is a 'twisted lesbian sister' and an 'embittered lesbian' of the 'self-imposed gutteral experiences of the gay ghetto.'" -- 9/5/2008

Peter LaBarbera of Americans for Truth Against Homosexuality heartily endorses the Blend, calling Pam:

A "vicious anti-Christian lesbian activist."
(Concerned Women for America's radio show [9:15], 1/25/07)

"A nutty lesbian blogger."
(MassResistance radio show [16:25], 2/3/07)

Pam's House Blend always seems to find these sick f*cks. The area of the country she is in? The home state of her wife? I know, they are everywhere. Pam just does such a great job of bringing them out into the light.

Remarks by the President at today's celebration of hate crimes law enactment

by: Pam Spaulding

Here's what you missed, if you didn't catch it on the White House livestream...

THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Press Secretary
___________________________________

For Immediate Release                                                        October 28, 2009

REMARKS BY THE PRESIDENT

AT RECEPTION COMMEMORATING THE ENACTMENT OF THE MATTHEW SHEPARD AND JAMES BYRD, JR. HATE CRIMES PREVENTION ACT

East Room

5:45 P.M. EDT

THE PRESIDENT:  Thank you so much, everybody.  Thank you so much, and welcome to the White House.

There are several people here that I want to just make mention of because they helped to make today possible.  We've got Attorney General Eric Holder.  (Applause.)  A champion of this legislation, and a great Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi.  (Applause.)  My dear friend, senior Senator from the great state of Illinois, Dick Durbin.  (Applause.)  The outstanding Chairman of Armed Services, Carl Levin.  (Applause.)  Senator Arlen Specter.  (Applause.)  Chairman of the Judiciary Committee in the House, Representative John Conyers.  (Applause.)  Representative Barney Frank.  (Applause.)  Representative Tammy Baldwin.  (Applause.)  Representative Jerry Nadler.  (Applause.)  Representative Jared Polis.  (Applause.)  All the members of Congress who are here today, we thank you.

Mr. David Bohnett and Mr. Tom Gregory and the David Bohnett Foundation -- they are partners for this reception.  Thank you so much, guys, for helping to host this.  (Applause.)

And finally, and most importantly, because these were really the spearheads of this effort  -- Denis, Judy, and Logan Shepard. (Applause.)  As well as Betty Byrd Boatner and Louvon Harris  -- sisters of James Byrd, Jr.  (Applause.)

To all the activists, all the organizers, all the people who helped make this day happen, thank you for your years of advocacy and activism, pushing and protesting that made this victory possible.

Obama continues below the fold.
Pam Spaulding :: Remarks by the President at today's celebration of hate crimes law enactment
You know, as a nation we've come far on the journey towards a more perfect union.  And today, we've taken another step forward.  This afternoon, I signed into law the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act.  (Applause.)

This is the culmination of a struggle that has lasted more than a decade.  Time and again, we faced opposition.  Time and again, the measure was defeated or delayed.  Time and again we've been reminded of the difficulty of building a nation in which we're all free to live and love as we see fit.  But the cause endured and the struggle continued, waged by the family of Matthew Shepard, by the family of James Byrd, by folks who held vigils and led marches, by those who rallied and organized and refused to give up, by the late Senator Ted Kennedy who fought so hard for this legislation -- (applause) -- and all who toiled for years to reach this day.

You understood that we must stand against crimes that are meant not only to break bones, but to break spirits -- not only to inflict harm, but to instill fear.  You understand that the rights afforded every citizen under our Constitution mean nothing if we do not protect those rights -- both from unjust laws and violent acts.  And you understand how necessary this law continues to be.

In the most recent year for which we have data, the FBI reported roughly 7,600 hate crimes in this country.  Over the past 10 years, there were more than 12,000 reported hate crimes based on sexual orientation alone.  And we will never know how many incidents were never reported at all.

And that's why, through this law, we will strengthen the protections against crimes based on the color of your skin, the faith in your heart, or the place of your birth.  We will finally add federal protections against crimes based on gender, disability, gender identity, or sexual orientation.  (Applause.) And prosecutors will have new tools to work with states in order to prosecute to the fullest those who would perpetrate such crimes.  Because no one in America should ever be afraid to walk down the street holding the hands of the person they love.  No one in America should be forced to look over their shoulder because of who they are or because they live with a disability.

At root, this isn't just about our laws; this is about who we are as a people.  This is about whether we value one another

-- whether we embrace our differences, rather than allowing them to become a source of animus.  It's hard for any of us to imagine the mind-set of someone who would kidnap a young man and beat him to within an inch of his life, tie him to a fence, and leave him for dead.  It's hard for any of us to imagine the twisted mentality of those who'd offer a neighbor a ride home, attack him, chain him to the back of a truck, and drag him for miles until he finally died.

But we sense where such cruelty begins:  the moment we fail to see in another our common humanity -- the very moment when we fail to recognize in a person the same fears and hopes, the same passions and imperfections, the same dreams that we all share.

We have for centuries strived to live up to our founding ideal, of a nation where all are free and equal and able to pursue their own version of happiness.  Through conflict and tumult, through the morass of hatred and prejudice, through periods of division and discord we have endured and grown stronger and fairer and freer.  And at every turn, we've made progress not only by changing laws but by changing hearts, by our willingness to walk in another's shoes, by our capacity to love and accept even in the face of rage and bigotry.

In April of 1968, just one week after the assassination of Martin Luther King, as our nation mourned in grief and shuddered in anger, President Lyndon Johnson signed landmark civil rights legislation.  This was the first time we enshrined into law federal protections against crimes motivated by religious or racial hatred -- the law on which we build today.

As he signed his name, at a difficult moment for our country, President Johnson said that through this law "the bells of freedom ring out a little louder."  That is the promise of America.  Over the sounds of hatred and chaos, over the din of grief and anger, we can still hear those ideals -- even when they are faint, even when some would try to drown them out.  At our best we seek to make sure those ideals can be heard and felt by Americans everywhere.  And that work did not end in 1968.  It certainly does not end today.  But because of the efforts of the folks in this room -- particularly those family members who are standing behind me -- we can be proud that that bell rings even louder now and each day grows louder still.

So thank you very much.  God bless you and God bless the United States of America.  (Applause.)

Not that I won't ever criticize
President Obama...of course I will, but after this speech I can, at this moment at least, say this.

He is my President. Just for today!

Thank you, Mr. President.

But...I am staying in your ass.

Is it warm and stinky in there?
Or did you mean to say "on your ass"

Close the GayTM. Only give to candidates who have actually done something other than make promises - most are just pandering for our cash.

LOL, John...
I owe you for that one.

Close the GayTM. Only give to candidates who have actually done something other than make promises - most are just pandering for our cash.

[ Parent ]
Amen to that...

Not certain why he rushed through it so quickly [perhaps to get as much of it as possible in TV news sound bites] but whoever wrote it deserves great praise. It was, for its length, as eloquent and on point as anything I've ever heard him pronounce.

And the moment he mentioned LBJ, I thought of the relevant words from his address to the nation after JFK's assassination [mostly crafted by JFK speechwriter Ted Sorenson].

The time has come for Americans of all races and creeds and political beliefs to understand and to respect one another. So let us put an end to the teaching and the preaching of hate and evil and violence. Let us turn away from the fanatics of the far left and the far right, from the apostles of bitterness and bigotry, from those defiant of law, and those who pour venom into our nation's bloodstream.

Amen, again.

we have been waiting for this to finally be passed. When I read the statement by Judy Sheppard I wept. It is long overdue. Today I am proud.

You know Petey, I don't typically post on blogs. This is new for me. And you're like a fag hag's version of a blog hag. I don't mean that as an insult by the way. I'm just at a shortage for descriptive words. I didn't know people like you existed. I mean, you're for real. I'm fascinated I tell you. You're like, screenplay material. Kinda like that guy who moved into the airport in Mexico City and lived there for a year. That's you. Only it's on Pam's House Blend. I'm not being facetious. I'm actually truly fascinated.
I'm also flattered that I immediately received your attention. I don't know...I'm a writer. I think it would be a cool post to do an interview with you---like for another blog. Either for Problogger or some funky blog that covers way out there kinda stuff. Would you be up for that? Like, you can talk about your first time coming to Pam's House Blend. And then share what it's been like. I'm assuming you've been for awhile.

So, yeah. Think about it and let me know. It's a serious offer. Really."

If we don't remember, he'll remind us soon enough.
As sure as God made little apples.  You sound as if you think Obama did anything--anything at all--to get this bill through Congress.  But he has provided no more leadership on this issue than he has on any other, gay, straight or what-have-you.

Cynic, n.  A blackguard whose faulty vision sees things as they are, not as they ought to be.
-Bierce, The Devil's Dictionary

[ Parent ]
Exactly,
Where has his leadership been on Health Care?  The same place he has been on DADT and the repeal of DOMA.  How about the stimulus bill?  Sure he said a few things, came to Colorado to do a dance about infrastructure, and then what?  Not a peep and infrastructure spending wasn't even 10%, which should have been about 50%.

OH he was busy getting Rick Warren and trying to suck up to the religious right wingers.

But,,hey,,,he signed it and gave special attention to hate crimes.  So I will give him that plus,,,But he is no 'Fierce Advocate' for anything.

If I make sense? it was quite by accident.

[ Parent ]
As usual from you, ish, lots of silly name-calling and no substance--none whatever
Could you please provide links that back up the implication that Obama actively worked for the passage of this law?  Not speeches, action.  Can you provide even one such link?  Of course not.

It's clear you don't like to be cited as an Obamabot.  You've said so time after time.  But a quick check of your postings here for the past year shows that virtually the only things you ever do here are provide knee-jerk support for Obama and spew venom at people who criticize him (slinging epithets like "fucktard," "shithead" and so on).  So please enlighten us.  If you object so vigorously to Obamabot, what other term do you think would apply accurately?

Cynic, n.  A blackguard whose faulty vision sees things as they are, not as they ought to be.

[ Parent ]
Perhaps you didn't notice
But this measure never made it this far under Bush.

The president's advocacy of the Hate Crimes act is obvious, and was effective, which you would notice if you weren't so busy trying to demonize anyone who doesn't agree with you.

I have never been uncritical of Obama. The tar on your brush is old and tired, and you better look and see where that can was manufactured. You're doing the right-wing's dirty work, but then, you know that.

[ Parent ]
Perhaps ISH didn't notice but
the hate crimes bill passed both houses in 2007 and was quietly dropped by Reid and Pelosi so the Democrats wouldn't be too identified as GLBT friendly, not that there was ever much danger of that.

Bush, who would've loved to veto, it never go the chance because of the Democrats were catering to the bigot vote.  Obama was sucessful in stealing a lot of big votes with "gawd's in the mix". He out roved Rove.

[ Parent ]
Q Scribe, I sometimes wonder if some of these Obots have offices in a subbasement of the DNC where they make dream up lame excuses for Obama.
Their obsequious hosannas for Obama are nauseatingly like a Supreme Soviet meeting discussing the virtues of Great Stalin, Hero of This, That AND the Other. They either forgive or willfully forget Obama's open hostility to the GLBT communities.

Obama decided to continue Clinton's 'rendition' (that's Clintonspeak for kidnapping, torturing and then murdering political and military opponents) policy and to keep concentration camps like Bagram in operation.

It's a dangerous attack on human and civil rights and in violation of the US Constitution and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Attacks on human rights are a bad precedent for GLBT folks, as our brothers and sisters in Iraq, being hunted down by US armed and trained militias and 'police' are finding out, but the Obots defend it all.

Obama escalated the US terrorist war against Afghanistan and began illegal cross border drone attacks on Pakistan killing hundreds of civilians. His continuation of the Clinton-Bush invasions and occupations drives US politics to the right and that's very dangerous for us but Obots defend it.

When the Obama administration defended Bill Clintons DADT and DOMA they used vile bigoted language comparing us to child molesters with not a peep of protest from the Obots. They clammed up.

When Obama torpedoed our chances for holding on to same sex marriage with his ugly bigoted statement that we don't deserve basic human rights like the simple right to marry saying - "gawd's in the mix" - Obots ignored it while celebrating the elections of a Clinton clone, an exact, and for us, disastrous copy of Slick Willie.

When the Obama administration upheld the racist exclusion of Genesio Oliveira, who claimed asylum as a victim of hate crimes in Brazil, including rape and who's legally married to an American citizen the Obots defended Obama. Why are they and the right wing the only ones who don't see this as racist and homohating?

When Obama excludes immigrant and imported workers from receiving health care saying "... the reforms I'm proposing would not apply to those who are here illegally"  they're lips are zippered shut. They refuse to admit that he's a racist and an enemy of working people.

Obama is an open enemy of our communities and in spite of his lies and promises is a homohater, a union buster, a lap dog of the rich and a racist in his actions.  Actions are what counts, and they all count against him.

The looter rich much prefer working with Democrats like Obama and the Clintons - they're greedier, they fool more people and they're able to get away with a lot more than Republicans.

[ Parent ]
I am not bitter, I am pissed off at President Obama,
For someone who claimed to be a fierce Advocate on our issues, he is very silent in promoting passage on many issues.  He is not demonstrating leadership on anything.

As much as I detest Bush, one thing he did do was get the republicans in congress behind his issues and what he wanted done.

If I make sense? it was quite by accident.

[ Parent ]
I do think he's made some critical mistakes on health care
Primarily in not having the supporters in the grassroots up and ready to go, not anticipating the venom of the opposition, and being too willing to negotiate on the public option.

But...he is a new President and it takes all Presidents time to learn the job (usually a year). He is going to make critical mistakes, underestimate the opposition, etc...I'm giving him some space in that regard.

He does seem to be learning the job faster than Clinton even though he and Clinton (and every President that I can remember going back to Nixon) have that arrogance that, maybe, goes along with the territory.

[ Parent ]
The signing ceremony
I don't know if anyone saw the signing ceremony proper (for the defense bill), but there was an actually pretty powerful moment toward the end when Obama briefly went on an aside about the hate crimes legislation, and as soon as he mentioned that the hate crimes legislation had been passed he was interrupted by just this explosion of applause that went on and on. He wasn't able to resume for a good 20 seconds...

I did...
...and it was.  I teared up a bit.

[ Parent ]
Yes, saw it.

As I wanted to actually watch him sign the bill. It seemed almost an aside, and more moving that his words later. In the later speech he seemed very tired. I guess he doesn't take the jammie naps Johnson used to.

It's the Hammer of JUSTICE,

[ Parent ]
I've been watching the tape
Of the speech a couple of times over. I'm bawling like a little girl. So much is forgiven just to have this moment.

I feel safer just being in a world where this can be said in pride.

Erase
Erase Hate has been the Matthew Shepard Foundation's campaign phrase and we will need to keep working to that end of erasing hate.  With this legislation we at least have a legal means of bringing violent haters to their comeuppance.  It is a great moment to be savored.  It is a step on a long road to a just and civil society.

Well, the first black president
actually had the nerve to say that we didn't do our fair share of heavy lifting as far as DADT and generally in the 90's.

Maybe Bubba was right.

Let's not make the same mistake again.

Underwhelmed by Obama's speech
As an Obama caucus delegate and contributor to his campaign, I remain underwhelmed and disappointed.

Despite the fact that Andrew Sullivan steals credit for Pam's postings (see his claim to "re-launching" the YouTube of the Omaha Beach vet Philip), I'm with him on this one:

http://andrewsullivan.theatlan...

Obama did some pretty fancy rhetorical gyrations not to explicitly say any of the names behind the acronym LGBT.

And as Aravosis says, what's with the weird reference to the couple who were "hosts?"

OT: Remember Larry Langford? -- 2008 Denied Pride Parade Permit...
Birmingham mayor convicted of taking bribes

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - A federal jury convicted Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford on Wednesday on all charges of accepting bribes in exchange for funneling $7.1 million in bond business to a prominent investment banker.

With the felony conviction, Langford was automatically removed from the office that he won in a landslide in 2007.

The jury deliberated less than two hours before returning its sweeping verdict on all 60 counts after hearing six days of testimony.

Langford, 63, showed no emotion when the verdict was read. "We all got our trials in life and this, too, will pass," he said before leaving the courtroom.

commentary:
In 2008 Mayor Larry Langford refused to issue a permit for a Birmingham Pride Parade stating that because of his religionist beliefs that he could not "condone that lifestyle".  But, I guess his religionist beliefs did not prevent him for accepting bribes at least SIXTY times. SIXTY felony counts! Looks like he'll be doing SEVEN YEARS in the slammer -- such a man of God.

In short, the public displays of hate against us are meant, by these types of individuals, to insulate their own depraved characters, to prevent a false-front of morality that covers their myriad internal sicknesses.

Did he sound weary to you?
Of course, I'm very glad that this legislation has finally passed... 10 years after it should have.

And I do give the President credit for both signing it and for saying the things that he said in his speech.

I just have to wonder -- and this is not a criticism -- did anyone else hear some tone of exasperation or... some kind of hesitation in saying the things he wanted to say, maybe encumbered by the knowledge of how much political capital he was spending just for this one, small, incremental improvement?

To me, he sounded halting, put-upon even. Is it that he knows full well how many votes he's losing by signing this? Is it frustration with our criticism of his slow hand? Is it both? Or is it something else?

yes I did
definitely hesitation.  I was wondering what that was about too.

Why is President Obama either God or Satan?
Why can't he simply be both? Well, so to speak.

Or rather...politics and policy and political rhetoric is a complicated thing and both sides of the story are true.

The thing not to do is to get caught up in a cult of personality that seems to surround Obama

cult of personality
Kevin,

I would ask you to look around and actually show me someone who "worships" Obama. As near as I can tell all these accusations of Obama worship and personality cult, which started in the primaries, are fantasies on the part of his opponents.

Am I glad he's president? Absolutely. Do I think it's great that an intelligent guy who gives great speeches is in the white house rather than the previous dolt? Absolutely. Is he the first president who I have ever actually liked? Sure. Do I agree with everything he's doing? Absolutely not. Do I think it's a big problem that so many in the gay blogosphere--just like in wingnut world--are ascribing motivations to him that are just not true? Definitely.

It's convenient for the Hillary holdovers and the McCain supporters and the right-wingers and the shouting impotent left to accuse anyone who defends Obama of being a mindless sycophant, and I'm disappointed that the trust issues of so many LGBT folks has made them so susceptible to that caricature. But there is a conflict in this country--a war on--between the forces of decency and progress and the forces of hatred and bigotry and I think it's absolutely crucial that we as a community be clear which side we're on: and despite all Obama's faults he is on that same side with us.

I have written elsewhere about how strongly I disagree with much of Obama's foreign policy: disagreements at the core of my own worldview. But this is the real world. Each of us is called to answer, Which side are you on? That imaginary middle-ground of political independence from our two corrupt parties is an illusion.

Where do I fit in?

I thought Hillary was Bill in a dress, and I didn't like him the first time, sure as hell didn't want him back for more.

McCain's sole "qualification" for the job of President seemed to be time spent in a bamboo cage. Other than that, he's just a scary old shit, and Palin needed to go far away from any center of power. Good for all of us that she has.

Not a right-winger. Considerably to the left of you, for example.

So am I the shouting impotent? Because you really are a mindless sycophant. And it isn't about defending Obama. It's about defending Obama all the time, in every situation, to the complete exclusion of everything else, even when he's clearly and utterly wrong.

Cause any fool knows, a dog needs a home; a shelter from pigs on the wing

I know you are but what am I
C'mon dude. I gave a reasoned argument. Your response kind of proves my point.

Hell, ish, it's natural that some sort of cult of personality
surrounds a leader. Otherwise, he wouldn't get elected in the first place.

And...let's face it, after the last Democratic Administration and their double talk as far as LGBT issues, shouldn't that even be expected?

Well Said!
These people equate rational disagreement with blind loyalty. They never stop to question if our support is univeral in all areas.

From their point of view, if you're not a foaming at the mouth Obama hater, and hysterical activist...then you must be some sort of automaton. They allow their emotions to get the better of them.

What you have to understand is that for some of them, it is an entitlement mentality. For them, no other issues exist. Thus if we can acknowledge that it makes sense that the resources of our government would be focused on fixing an immediate crisis, they throw a tantrum. They engage in a simple binary that says that if something is not done NOW then it will never get done. Thus for them if the President and the Democrats do not push what they (folks like Qscribe) consider important in their first few months...then it equates to an unforgiveable betrayal. Again, its a sense of entitlement born from not truly understanding how slow this process has been for every minority group.

Its best to simply let they overly emotional folks throw their tantrums. You and I both know how the political process really works...and thus understand that in the end we will be right. It enrages them to no end that despite their bitterness and irrational hatred, Obama will still be President and that the march toward equality will be slow. Thus we will all reach the same goal, only we will have done so without the emotional stress that they are determined to put themselves through.

Peace my friend!

Well, QScribe's issues
go well beyond LGBT issues, actually.

Again, the experience with Bill Clinton is key in this case, Geek. But to equate criticism of Obama from the left with the teabaggers and the racists (as ish and you often do) is equally as preposterous.

I'd run away too if I no clue.

The looter rich much prefer working with Democrats like Obama and the Clintons - they're greedier, they fool more people and they're able to get away with a lot more than Republicans.
