Growing up in the Yakima Valley, I often heard discussions---passionate at times, about the possibility of the central and eastern part of the state succeeding (sic) from Washington, forming a new state and the people I grew up around would have called the new state, "Lincoln". Most of those folks are dead now, but I still hear the idea from time to time.

Close the GayTM. Only give to candidates who have actually done something other than make promises - most are just pandering for our cash.

I would vote in favor of that initiative

Eastern Washington is a huge drain on the state economy: what they bring into state revenues from agriculture is more than lost because of the state's cost to educate, build roads, etc. Let 'em go and I won't mind if the door slams them on the ass on their way out.

Some of us only live out here in the sticks because we can't afford the west side, but for us LGBT families, we do appreciate that most of the laws are made on the west side.

well...

the laws are made in olympia, but a large swath of the legislators meeting there are from east of the cascades.  we all have an equal say with the bicameral system.

I used to think

that only places like Texas or Alaska were so bad, but when I hear things like this about places I thought were better like Washington, or when I see vote results in places like CA & ME, it makes me wonder... is there a single state in the US where you can be an open as you want in any city or town or community in the state without getting somewhere between a funny look to being assaulted?

The trend is pretty much the same through every state- the urban centers, islands of blue amidst a sea of red, supporting things progressive and tolerant. Everywhere else? Not so much.

This is not to say that the red counties or states do not have their sane members- far from it. They are, unfortunately, stained red. Even one more voice above the margin and it's doomed that way. Several counties in Washington were hundreds or maybe just a thousand people behind the intolerant. Sad? Yes, but we're not necessarily alone.

It looks like that holds true almost everywhere, except there are a few solidly red states, and a couple of solidly blue states in every county - the only two I could find where MA & CT.

I guess my question then is, is it true for either MA or CT that in any city or town or community you can be as open as you want without getting somewhere between a funny look to being assaulted?

You simply don't have the vast stretches of poverty and ignorance that you find further west.

Hey Jake

Congratulations on your Win in Chapel Hill!!

Ref your question above about MA and CT - We (Nick and I) have been here since April. The greatest comparison I can make between here and NC is this - every time I expect to get the hesitation and "Oh" from people regarding my marriage, they surprise me with their completely non-judgmental congratulatory reaction.

That's not to say that the marriage-bigots don't exist - I know they do, but I think they also know how dumb they sound here in Connecticut so its best for them keep their opinions to themselves instead of being ostracized.

The most interesting thing in Gary Randall's post

He says:

"We are making plans to help elect new law makers who will support those beliefs that are important to people of faith and social conservatives. There are some vulnerable seats and we will be targeting them in the future.

. . .

All donations to our educational outreach are tax deductible. "

Tax exempt organizations are not permitted to campaign for or against candidates.  Maybe someone at WAFST should ring the WA Dept. of Revenue and the IRS.

If I'm not mistaken,

his organization has both a 501(c)3 and 501(c)4 arm.  

For me the important thing in his post is that he rarely misses the opportunity to beg for money.  I'm sure he and Stickney want people to think they're flush with valuable data now because they have exclusive access to the names and addresses of everyone who signed their petition, but if you look at their histories of meddling in legislative races, it's pretty ineffectual.  Stickney in particular wasted a lot of money this past winter on running attack ads against legislators who supported the domestic partnership bill.  These were all legislators who were very solidly in their seats.  Wasteful sabre-rattling.  I'm sure Randall and Stickney can be an annoyance in the 2010 legislative races, but I think their bark will be worse than their bite because in my opinion their A-number one priority is making a living off of their enterprises.  The organization to keep our attention on is Family Policy Institute of WA, since they have the big money connections to FOTF and NOM.
