Does anyone else think that it's not just the LGBT folks who need to come out of the closet, but the right wing also? Not defending her

in fact, I couldn't care less about her -- she's an insipid example of a minor and inconsequential individual given greater than actual importance through the "circus" of celebrity culture.

The reason that it so "delicious" and so wonderfully perfect that she, of all people, is being subject to this treatment is her pretense of "upstanding morality" whilst she's entirely nothing of the sort, and meets all the worst stereotypes of the "gold digger".

What I'm am saying, however, is that the use of this as being her downfall is a part of the very same thing within the culture that is affecting all of us -- and when we celebrate the salaciousness of such a downfall, instead of merely the downfall itself, we embrace the very ideas and concepts that prevent us from achieving the equality we seek.

Homophobic and transphobic issues all stem from the same source: sexism. Sexism is used against us, sexism is promulgated within our own cultures, sexism is the thing that divides our internal dynamic.

While I'm glad to see that she's been personally tarred for her actions, the mechanism of doing so is what I disagree with since its the same one used against us.

The idea that such a tape is a "bad thing"?  That's the problem.

And who do you think promotes that idea and reinforces it it in the same way and in the same manner the promote and reinforce the idea that being LGBT is a "bad thing"?

It isn't a bad thing. There's nothing wrong with it unless she made it without personal agency (and, personally, I suspect that she's got agency in pretty much most of her stupidity).

So please, don't assume I am defending her. It's insulting to me.

The idea that such a tape is a "bad thing"?  That's the problem.

I agree that considering such things to be bad is a problem.

However, she's one of the people who would make a living off of demonizing and criminalizing such tapes as well as the very acts thereon (whatever they may be.)

She's been hoisted by something.

correct me if i'm wrong,

but the way i read that, it was a private tape, for private consumption, not a commercial product, meant for public consumption.

if that's the case, then ms. prejean was essentially blackmailed into dropping her suit. if that's the case, the attorney threatening her should be investigated by the state bar, for ethics violations, and reported to the state's attorney general, for possible criminal charges.

i don't care for ms. prejean, i think she's a self-centered opportunist (on the other hand, i sort of like that in a person!), but i like low-rent attorneys even less.

as i said, i could be wrong, she may have put it out on the net, or done it for cash. there isn't really enough data available to know for sure.

It's Not Blackmail

Carrie was alleging she was fired for "religious discrimination." The pageant folks said she was fired for contract violations of which one was her non-disclosure of nude or indecent materials. The tape, even if it was made privately, should have been disclosed. The pictures could have been debated either way as to whether they were nude or indecent. I doubt a tape of Miss Prejean masturbating with a foreign object would be considered as either clothed or decent. Case closed.

While cpinv was correct in their assessment of the nature of the tape, it wasn't the pageant that was "low rent" here.

If anything, it was the source for the reliably low rent TMZ, which secured the tape from someone who had access to the tape of ms prejean.

TMZ pays cash for such dirt. No doubt someone ms prejean treated in her usual fashion thought she'd like a taste of it herself.

The lawyers just did their job, and acquired the tape as part of a defense they were bound into presenting my ms prejean herself.

This is why the only avenue our opponents have is the court of public opinion, and why they always turn to purely democratic systems to achieve their ends.

The pageant people and their attorneys did not leak the tape or knowledge of the existence of the tape. TMZ did that and I would suspect they may have forwarded it to the pageant, or the person who sold it to TMZ forwarded it to the pageant.

To what is the perfect response - this was a private sex tape, not a commercial porn video. As such, it is highly likely that whatever little Carrie did, she did so willingly and consensually - Joe simply went to the most extreme form of that in determining what would be most embarrassing to Prejean.

Oh, and as I commented on Joe's blog, schadenfreude, it's what's for breakfast! And I have absolutely no problem with that, when we are dealing with a morally superior, sanctimonious piece of work like Prejean.

The very few times I've seen someone makes a comment here approaching "rape as punishment would be appropriate" there is always a swift chorus of voices condemning such savagery.
