Blend-o-licious endorsements...

The Christian Civic League of Maine's Mike Hein calls Pam's House Blend:
"a leading source of radical homosexual propaganda, anti-Christian bigotry, and radical transgender advocacy."

He is "praying that Pam Spaulding will "turn away from her wicked and sinful promotion of homosexual behavior." (CCLM's web site, 10/15/07)

Ex-gay "Christian" activist James Hartline on Pam:
"I have been mocked over and over again by ungodly and unprincipled anti-christian lesbians."
(from "Six Years In Sodom: From The Journal Of James Hartline," 9/4/2006, written from the "homosexual stronghold" of Hillcrest in San Diego).

"Pam is a 'twisted lesbian sister' and an 'embittered lesbian' of the 'self-imposed gutteral experiences of the gay ghetto.'" -- 9/5/2008

Peter LaBarbera of Americans for Truth Against Homosexuality heartily endorses the Blend, calling Pam:

A "vicious anti-Christian lesbian activist."
(Concerned Women for America's radio show [9:15], 1/25/07)

"A nutty lesbian blogger."
(MassResistance radio show [16:25], 2/3/07)

Pam's House Blend always seems to find these sick f*cks. The area of the country she is in? The home state of her wife? I know, they are everywhere. Pam just does such a great job of bringing them out into the light.

On the Record…2010 NC Democratic Senate Candidates

by: Jake Gellar-Goad

Thu Nov 19, 2009 at 02:40:20 AM EST

(Thank you for asking these questions, Jake. These answers are a sea change if you look back at how Kay Hagan avoided any discussion about legislation affecting LGBTs; her campaign studiously avoided speaking to LGBT media and in online forums served up vague pablum like "I do not believe in any discrimination" then proceeded to say marriage is between a man and a woman. I'm glad to see candidates unafraid of dealing with reality about legislation they would have to vote on. - promoted by Pam Spaulding)

In the past I have often had to “corner” candidates by asking questions about LGBT equality at public events to get them to answer my questions.  A problem with this method, besides taking the effort to end up at these events to ask the questions while being a student & working, is that this format often provides more wiggle room for equivocation and avoiding the question, and it doesn't always capture their response permanently in writing, audio, or video depending on the size and scope of the venue.  In some cases this method has worked well though.

This year however I have asked all 3 candidates (although one has now dropped out) about their stances on LGBT equality in an online format, mostly in live-blog events.  With these events there are a lot of questions left in advance, and a lot of questions hurled at the candidate while they are there.  So they can very easily pick and choose which questions they want to answer without looking like they are really avoiding a given question intentionally.  I am pleased to report that all the candidates have answered my questions on LGBT equality without being cornered.

Secretary of State Elaine Marshall vs Durham Lawyer Kenneth Lewis vs Captain in the United States Army Reserve & former State Senator Cal Cunningham

Follow me below the fold to see what they had to say:

Jake Gellar-Goad :: On the Record…2010 NC Democratic Senate Candidates

Here is a more detailed breakdown of my thoughts on their responses, and on how North Carolina is leading the way on LGBT equality in the south.  It goes a little bit into my experiences as an intern for the Jim Neal, an openly gay businessman, campaign for Senate, as the Volunteer Coordinator for the Mark Kleinschmidt campaign whose victory made Chapel Hill the largest city yet in NC to have an openly gay mayor (it was already the first city in the south to elect an openly gay official), my role w/ the prop 8 protest in Raleigh which was the largest gay rights rally (not counting Pride) in NC to date so far as a I know, as well as other progress like our anti-bullying bill & sex ed bill:

But on to the juicy stuff.  Here are their answers (in some cases depending on the format I got into specifics like ENDA, DADT, DOMA & in others it was a more general question on lgbt equality - I was trying to both educate these potential legislators while asking them questions)

Secretary of State Elaine Marshall

Jake asked about equality issues. I oppose discrimination, support abolishing DADT (if people will serve, we should honor them. Period), oppose DOMA because I don't believe this is the duty of the Federal government and believe it puts the Full Faith and Credit concept in jeopardy, and support the concept of ENDA as described by Jake.

Durham Lawyer Kenneth Lewis

Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell?
I’m a firm believer that we should not discriminate against people. That’s part of my core belief structure. We have men and women of all sexual orientations serving in the military. The idea that we would remove an officer or anyone because of his or her sexual orientation is abhorrent to me.

Employee Non-Discrimination Act?

I have not read the Employee Non-Discrimination Act, but I will repeat that I do not believe we should discriminate against people because of their sexual orientation.

Civil Marriage?
I understand people and their religious beliefs and I respect that very much and I would not want to do anything that infringes upon someone exercising their religion, but with respect to government actions and as a society of people who have a variety of faiths and non-faiths, I do not believe we should discriminate.

Captain in the United States Army Reserve & former State Senator Cal Cunningham (he is currently out of the race)

I'm pro-equality, from fighting to include orientation in the the non discrimination policy of the University back in 1994 to fighting to include trans-gender in 1996, to being for domestic partnerships from the swing State Senate district in 2000, to being in favor of ending DADT (and refusing to chapter anyone out of the Army for allegations while the senior-most prosecutor in Iraq), to supporting the ENDA, etc.

Now all the democratic candidates have stated their support for equality to some degree in their own way. Kenneth Lewis did it first with a heartfelt belief in opposing discrimination, Cal Cunningham (while now out of the race) was able to cite specific past efforts he has engaged in to support equality and actions do speak very loudly, and Elaine Marshall has shown her support on the 3 of the big issues that LGBT citizens face (although there are certainly more) and that the next senator from NC may well get to vote on.

I hope my efforts to get all the candidates on the record as pro-equality will help them hold firm when these issues are voted on amidst all the lobbying and chaos that accompanies such votes.

And who are these democratic candidates up against you ask?  Republican incumbant Senator Richard Burr.  This is the same Burr who suggested to his family to do a bank-run when the economy got tight, the same Burr who stood against Tammy Duckworth's attempts to help veterans, the same Burr who thinks domestic abuse should count as a pre-existing health condition whereby you ought to be denied insurance coverage, and the same Burr that voted against an anti-rape amendment, the same Burr who is anti-choice, and the same Burr who supports a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.

Good one Pam...

Now,dDon't you want to confront that State Rep again who said to your face that there are no black gays in her district? I cannot believe you could hold your tongue, please don't do it next time.... you may need to educate you co-constituents too.
