McCain campaign worker confesses: made up claim that she was mutilated by black man

The truly scary part --

How many people (and by people I mean McCain voters) will never believe that she made up the story.

After all, the scary black man is #2 behind the scary Arab man when it comes to the people just waiting to invade the sanctity of the trailer park until all your bases belong to them.

Let's Hope It Gets Big Play This Weekend

This crap needs to be headlined. I don't think it was just some psycho little girl. McCain's latest tactic (or was that a strategy?) was to go after the redneck vote in western PA as a way of reviving his campaign.

This concoction was right out of the White Monster Subconscious. A black man. A big black man. At night. Dressed in black. A robber. A rapist. A mutilatin' savage! In short, your typical Obama type.

She reports her story, and what happens? McNasty calls her with condolences. Palin calls her with condolences. They make sure the media knows. The right-wing blogs go batshit about the big black (6 foot 4, and you know what THAT means) savage. Elect Obama and We're Fucked!

Except this time they got caught. Let's see if the media pays attention. I sure hope so.

This bugs me because it sounds like he (or the voters about whom he's speaking) are implying that, if the allegation were true, Obama or his campaign had something to do with it.  If it had been true, it would be an example of Obama supporters being just as crazy as McCain ones.

Whereas I can agree with his statement about the McCain campaign being linked to race-baiting because it's just another level of bizarre and overly racist actions by yet another McCain-Palin supporters in their quest to paint Obama as a terrorist.

My BF says that the police probably spoke to friends and family and found that she has a history of mental illness.

A big city like Pittsburgh probably involved a forensic  psychologist very quickly. They know the signs that indicate they're dealing with a person with a mental illness.

And this really isn't about how bright she is or isn't. She didn't plot this in a way that you or I would do. She was probably in a psychotic state, inventing the scenario step-by-step as she went along. Scary, huh?

Now, if this had been in a small town...

The news from Pittsburgh

There hasn't been a word in any of the local media about the police using a forensic psychologist.  The story was so obviously bogus, I doubt if they felt the need for one

Todd's story smelled fishy from the start.  Bloomfield, the neighborhood where the imaginary attack took place, is not "the wrong side of town," as Todd claimed.  It's a fairly progressive part of town, anchored by West Penn Hospital and the numerous people who work there and live in the neighborhood.  There are also lots of college students and academics of various types.  (It's only a few minutes from where I live.)  And Liberty Avenue, where the attack supposedly happened at 9PM on Wednesday, is a major thoroughfare, always busy.  It's inconceivable that something like this could have happened there without lots of people seeing.

Add that to the backward B, and you've got a VERY suspicious story.  Who needs a psychologist?

My BF is a clinical psychologist

He does lots of forensic work for local police and the courts.

When we discussed this story last night, he explained that this woman probably has a serious mental illness like Borderline Personality Disorder.

It isn't likely that her motive was to harm the Obama campaign.

It was a psychotic episode that resulted in an impulsive act and self-mutilation.

Apparently, there's not a great deal of planning and forethought involved in these kinds of things. The person is actually living out the scenario step-by-step. They invent the situation on the fly without considering the consequences.

So, while we are all disgusted by the fact that she tried to blame a "scary black man" for the injuries she inflicted on herself, she's not some kind of evil schemer out to destroy the election.

My BF didn't like it when I called this woman an asshole. He said she is very ill and needs lots of therapy. I told him I would try to be understanding (only half humoring him).

Agree--They are gving the mentally unstable haters permission to act

McCain/Palin race-baiting is partially responsible, whether this woman is mentally ill or not. The fact that she tied it to her McCain bumper sticker makes it a part of the over-all race baiting tactics. Clearly at least a part of her motivation was to "help" her candidate; mentally ill or not, the intent was there, even if it was poorly executed.

Only someone who is mentally unstable would do something like this in the first place. But even done on-the-fly, there are plenty of mentally ill people who might have got away with it, just by virtue of not making stupid mistakes, like writing the B backward and setting the scenario at an ATM machine, where there are always cameras.

Police say a campaign volunteer confessed to making up a story that a mugger attacked her and cut the letter B in her face after seeing her McCain bumper sticker; now she's facing charges.

At a news conference this afternoon, officials said they believe that Ashley Todd's injuries were self-inflicted.

Todd, 20, of Texas, is now facing charges for filing a false report to police.

Todd initially told police that she was robbed at an ATM in Bloomfield and that the suspect began beating her after seeing her GOP sticker on her car.

Police investigating the alleged attack, however, began to notice some inconsistencies in her story and administered a polygraph test.

Investigators asked Todd to return to the police station today for more questioning and to help them release a composite sketch of the suspect.

When she did, police say she admitted that she made the whole thing up and that it snowballed out of control.

Todd told investigators today that she "just wanted to tell the truth" - adding that she was neither robbed, nor attacked.

She said he believed she may have scratched the backward "B" on her own face because she was the only one in the car at the time. Todd told police that when saw was the "B" in her rearview mirror, she thought of Barack Obama.

On a cold night in Pittsburgh, a disturbed young woman committed an act all too common--she called in an attack on herself, stating that she had been attacked by a black man who had robbed her, and, seeing the McCain sticker on her car, in a fit of social activism somehow compatible with his immediately previous psychopathy, slashed a "B" into her face.  That the B was, in fact, backwards--as would be the case if one was putting it on themselves while looking into a mirror--was no doubt meant as a literary irony, such as the "Amerika" of earlier social radicals, while the lightness of the scratching--despite the "attacker's" cited "rage"--was no doubt a signal of his electoral ambivalence in this tight race.

Of course, the event, implausible as fact even to the most rabid fictionalists on the right-wing, was a hoax. Anyone who understands the diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder is well aware of what happened here. Extreme needs for attention combine with physically destructive behavior--most often seen in cutting one's own skin--in an act meant to bring outer love and attention as it attacks inner self-hatred.

The act is rarely carefully planned. One of the key features of Borderline Personality Disorder is impulsivity. The act is usually spurred by rage. As a result, they spring to action, in order to address the immediate need, without any consideration of how the behavior will later unravel. There is an intense desire to address a powerful sense of abandonment with an impulsive and ultimately self-destructive action.

In a supreme irony, these characteristics mirror the tactical efforts of the McCain/Palin ticket throughout this campaign: impulsivity, an emphasis on the grand gesture that is poorly thought through, and that is ultimately self destructive.

Perhaps the act was wiser than it seems.

Perhaps it was meant as homage.

UPDATE: Woman has been identified as having as history of mental illness. That media and the McCain team would use this is reprehensible.
