Maybe its been around a while, but I just saw great Obama commercial a few minutes ago on MSNBC: quintessentially middle-class images running along with Paul Simon's "American Tune," all fading into an image of Dubya hugging McBush when the song arrives at the lyric 'I wonder what's gone wrong.'

Psychobabble

When they speak of "loyalty to America", what they of course really mean is "loyalty to their own brand of far-right ideology".  But they know that if they tried to sell their Wall Street agenda directly on its substance, they'd get absolutely massacred at the polls.  So they instead turn politics into an exercise in applied psychology - playing language games to project their own agenda onto an abstract creature of national identity with which they know people strongly identify.

It's a damn shame that our politics are still bogged down with this kind of groupthink.  With McCarthyism some fifty years behind us, I can't believe anyone still interprets the "loyalty" meme as anything other than a tragic historical parody.
