The Christian Civic League of Maine's Mike Hein calls Pam's House Blend:
"a leading source of radical homosexual propaganda, anti-Christian bigotry, and radical transgender advocacy."

He is "praying that Pam Spaulding will "turn away from her wicked and sinful promotion of homosexual behavior." (CCLM's web site, 10/15/07)

Ex-gay "Christian" activist James Hartline on Pam:
"I have been mocked over and over again by ungodly and unprincipled anti-christian lesbians."
(from "Six Years In Sodom: From The Journal Of James Hartline," 9/4/2006, written from the "homosexual stronghold" of Hillcrest in San Diego).

"Pam is a 'twisted lesbian sister' and an 'embittered lesbian' of the 'self-imposed gutteral experiences of the gay ghetto.'" -- 9/5/2008

Peter LaBarbera of Americans for Truth Against Homosexuality heartily endorses the Blend, calling Pam:

A "vicious anti-Christian lesbian activist."
(Concerned Women for America's radio show [9:15], 1/25/07)

"A nutty lesbian blogger."
(MassResistance radio show [16:25], 2/3/07)

Pam's House Blend always seems to find these sick f*cks. The area of the country she is in? The home state of her wife? I know, they are everywhere. Pam just does such a great job of bringing them out into the light.

Former Sen. Simpson crushes Gen. Pace, DADT in op-ed

by: Pam Spaulding

Wed Mar 14, 2007 at 09:30:00 AM EDT

As the AFA fundies, anti-gay hacks and the ex-gay-for-pay crowd continue to support the inappropriate comments of Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Peter Pace, pols  are coming forward to condemn his comments that homosexuality is immoral, and that tying his personal views to support of DADT isn't helpful or rational.

The simple fact is that Pace is hurting the gays and lesbians who are serving their country, at a time when morale is already low. Former Senator Alan K. Simpson of Wyoming in today's WaPo, "Bigotry That Hurts Our Military":

As a lifelong Republican who served in the Army in Germany, I believe it is critical that we review -- and overturn -- the ban on gay service in the military. I voted for "don't ask, don't tell." But much has changed since 1993.

My thinking shifted when I read that the military was firing translators because they are gay. According to the Government Accountability Office, more than 300 language experts have been fired under "don't ask, don't tell," including more than 50 who are fluent in Arabic. This when even Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice recently acknowledged the nation's "foreign language deficit" and how much our government needs Farsi and Arabic speakers. Is there a "straight" way to translate Arabic? Is there a "gay" Farsi? My God, we'd better start talking sense before it is too late. We need every able-bodied, smart patriot to help us win this war.

...Gen. Pace is entitled, like anyone, to his personal opinion, even if it is completely out of the mainstream of American thinking. But he should know better than to assert this opinion as the basis for policy of a military that represents and serves an entire nation. Let us end "don't ask, don't tell." This policy has become a serious detriment to the readiness of America's forces as they attempt to accomplish what is arguably the most challenging mission in our long and cherished history.

Simpson joins John Warner, who had this to say yesterday.
In a rare rebuke of the nation's top military officer, Sen. John Warner, R-Va., says he strongly disagrees with Gen. Peter Pace's views that homosexuality is "immoral."

"I respectfully, but strongly, disagree with the chairman's view that homosexuality is immoral," Warner said in a statement released by his office.

The WaPo editorial this AM is equally scathing about Pace -- and those moral waivers the military has employed to allow felons, including a soldier who went on to be accused of murder and rape, to serve. See that after the flip.
Pam Spaulding :: Former Sen. Simpson crushes Gen. Pace, DADT in op-ed
Pace obviously doesn't mind this kind of soldier serving.
As the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have worn on, the Pentagon has had to lower its recruitment standards. "Moral waivers," granted to Army recruits with misdemeanor and felony convictions, nearly doubled between 2003 and 2006. One such recruit, Pvt. Steven D. Green, stands accused of raping a 14-year-old Iraqi girl and murdering her and her family. Meanwhile, the Defense Department purged 11,077 troops -- including 322 desperately needed linguists -- from its ranks between 1994 and 2005 simply because they were gay, although the pace of expulsions seems to have slowed as the military's needs outweighed its moral scruples. Homosexuals serve admirably and openly -- without fear of prosecution or sneering judgment -- in 24 countries, including Israel, Australia and Britain, America's staunchest ally in the Iraq war. Neither morale nor military performance has suffered.

As Gen. Pace considers the uproar over his remarks on morality, he might reflect on Marine Staff Sgt. Eric Fidelis Alva, who like his father and grandfather chose to serve in the military. When he enlisted 17 years ago, he lied about his sexual orientation. Sgt. Alva was the first American wounded in the Iraq war, when he stepped on a land mine. President Bush presented him with the Purple Heart. His moral fitness for duty was unquestioned. What's immoral is that Sgt. Alva -- and thousands of other brave members of the armed forces -- had to lie or be silent for the right, the risk and the honor of serving his country.

Some of the presidential candidates have come out, so to speak, on one side or the other.

Republican Senator John McCain of Arizona said outside a fund-raiser in Beverly Hills, Calif., that Pace "should be given a chance to explain himself" and that "don't ask, don't tell" has been "successful and should be maintained."

Several Democratic candidates, including former North Carolina Senator John Edwards and New York Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, assailed the comments and called for a repeal of "don't ask, don't tell."

"I find it outrageous that at a time when we need as many good people serving in the military as possible, we are still talking about excluding people based on their sexual orientation," another contender, Senator Christopher Dodd of Connecticut, said in a statement.

Rudy Giuliani dodged the issue, releasing a statement signaling support for DADT but remaining silent on Pace's "immoral" comments.

Yeah, don't keep the homos out
We need them too badly.  THAT would be immoral.  Wouldn't it Senator Simpson.

If we didn't need the bodies to stuff in the cannon we wouldn't think twice about the immoral faggots, unless we were considering amending the Constitution.

I think Joan/Faye said it best:  "Don't fuck with me fellas.  This ain't my first time at the rodeo."

Simpson isn't on the "immoral" bandwagon
Simpson has been (is?) honorary chair of the Republican Unity Coalition.  He isn't a hater like Gen. Pace.  While the reason he changed his mind about DADT may be frustrating, what is significant is that he did change his mind about it.

War will do that...
It changes minds about the importance of clinging to an idiotic mentality.

Would he have written this editorial before the Iraq war - four years ago when the war was going to be a quick vicotry and we were going to be greated as liberators?

This is completely disingenuous and transparent.

And its the same old story.  Until it can be shown that equality isn't going to infringe upon the majority and if a need for our equailty can be proved then its acceptable.  Otherwise, reason, logic and ethics will have no impact.

So, thanks, Senator.  Glad to hear you think my corpse is worthy of American values.

great coverage
Pam!

like Patrick, there's something off about saying...yeah, let gays in the military to be used by bushco in this pathetic exhibition of incompetence...

but, it's the equality at issue.  Sgt. Eric Alva is right on.  He served and lost a leg for all Americans, not just straight ones.

Significant
It is significant that people like Simpson and Warner-- who are hardcore conservatives-- are coming out so strongly against Pace and DADT.  It is good to see the Dems appear as unitd as they ever are on anything about it, too.  We have made progress in the last decade.

wrong newspaper
Simpson's Op-Ed is in the Washington Post rather than the New York Times.

We Should Probably Thank Pace ...
... By exposing his raw bigotry, he's made it very difficult for closeted homophobes to hide behind the argument that gays can't openly service because that would, you know, harm unit morale and cohesion because the other enlistees wouldn't be comfortable serving with gays.

Hell, the Zogby poll a few months ago indicated the troops who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan are overwhelming supporting of their gay brothers and sisters in arms. As always, it's the damned generals that are the problem.

So I say: Unleash and unmuzzle Pace and others of his sort. Let them spew forth their biases so people can see that prejudice is the real reason for keeping gays out of the military. That, as much or more than anything positive we can say, will probably do the most toward ridding this backwards country of legalized homophobia.

Another two republicans......HMMMM
I posted this on the other thread discussing Pace, but it was supposed to be on this thread....

The fact that it is once again two republicans comming out in our defense is very telling.  Looks like the Log cabinettes are doing something in their efforts to change their party from within.  The "Democratic" party and progressives are being left behind on this issue.  Although the Republic Party has been against us in the past, it certainly is telling that they are the ones to most recently come out in our defense.  From the two Pam blogged about in the last few weeks who came out against the Ammendments to the two who came out in defense of us on this issue only goes to show, that the "Progressives" have a lot to learn from the "Regressives" when it comes to this issue.  At least as of late.

it's a head scratcher for me
Why Giuliani would be in support of DADT.  After all, he is not a hater.  I think he may be losing some crossover dem votes (and for him there could be lots, I think) by appearing to grow a hater bone so he can look more like romney/mccain.

To be totally cynical about the motives of the two other repubs Pam mentioned, i might guess that they're reading the polls too, and see that the public may be against marriage equality (a sponge repubs have all but squeezed dry), but they aren't for across the board discrimination.  Or not.  Who knows?  I actully hope that these guys are genuine in their support for parity in the military.  People do change their minds for honest reasons.  Even politicians (or so I've heard).

Both Simpson's column and the WaPo editorial
are superb.  I particularly appreciate the phrase "sneering judgment."  That's we get from James Dobson, Peter LaBarbera, and Gary Bauer:  sneering judgment.  And it stinks.
