The Christian Civic League of Maine's Mike Hein calls Pam's House Blend:
"a leading source of radical homosexual propaganda, anti-Christian bigotry, and radical transgender advocacy."

He is "praying that Pam Spaulding will "turn away from her wicked and sinful promotion of homosexual behavior." (CCLM's web site, 10/15/07)

Ex-gay "Christian" activist James Hartline on Pam:
"I have been mocked over and over again by ungodly and unprincipled anti-christian lesbians."
(from "Six Years In Sodom: From The Journal Of James Hartline," 9/4/2006, written from the "homosexual stronghold" of Hillcrest in San Diego).

"Pam is a 'twisted lesbian sister' and an 'embittered lesbian' of the 'self-imposed gutteral experiences of the gay ghetto.'" -- 9/5/2008

Peter LaBarbera of Americans for Truth Against Homosexuality heartily endorses the Blend, calling Pam:

A "vicious anti-Christian lesbian activist."
(Concerned Women for America's radio show [9:15], 1/25/07)

"A nutty lesbian blogger."
(MassResistance radio show [16:25], 2/3/07)

Pam's House Blend always seems to find these sick f*cks. The area of the country she is in? The home state of her wife? I know, they are everywhere. Pam just does such a great job of bringing them out into the light.

LA Times' Penner: "I am a transsexual sportswriter."

by: Autumn Sandeen

Thu Apr 26, 2007 at 12:36:57 PM EDT

(I can only imagine what kind of comments this development will generate on the ESPN message boards... - promoted by pam)

I am a transsexual sportswriter. It has taken more than 40 years, a million tears and hundreds of hours of soul-wrenching therapy for me to work up the courage to type those words. Los Angeles Times HeaderI realize many readers and colleagues and friends will be shocked to read them.

That's OK. I understand that I am not the only one in transition as I move from Mike to Christine. Everyone who knows me and my work will be transitioning as well. That will take time. And that's all right. To borrow a piece of well-worn sports parlance, we will take it one day at a time.

Sportswriter Mike Penner announced in the Los Angeles Times today that he she is transitioning from Mike Penner to Christine Daniels.

Christine further stated:

A transgender friend provided the best and simplest explanation I have heard: We are born with this, we fight it as long as we can, and in the end it wins.

And. . .
When I told my boss Randy Harvey, he leaned back in his chair, looked through his office window to scan the newsroom and mused, "Well, no one can ever say we don't have diversity on this staff."

Fortunately for Christine Daniels, she lives in the most transgender friendly state in the United States. The Gender Nondiscrimination Act of 2003 (AB 196) was signed into law back in 2003, the law changed the California Government Code in two places.

First, it amended California Government Code 12926(p) which defines sex to read:

(p) "Sex" includes, but is not limited to, pregnancy, childbirth, or medical conditions related to pregnancy or childbirth. "Sex" also includes, but is not limited to, a person's gender, as defined in Section 422.56 of the Penal Code. California Government Code 12926 (Italicized portion is the amended language)

For the sake of statutory consistency, AB 196 did not create a new definition of gender to add to the statute. Instead it incorporated the definition from California's Hate Crimes Statute. That statute defines gender as:
"Gender" means sex, and includes a person's gender identity and gender related appearance and behavior whether or not stereotypically associated with the person's assigned sex at birth. California Penal Code 422.56(c)8

Christine Daniels, through her personal journey, provides another argument for an inclusive ENDA. It's because unlike Steve Stanton or Julie Nemecek, Mike Penner couldn't be legally fired for beginning the transition to Christine Daniels.

Christine Daniels' story is an example of what a law protecting people against employment discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity can do for LGBT employees. The Gender Nondiscrimination Act of 2003 (AB 196) changed the employment climate in California; the Los Angeles Times didn't fire her. The Times may have accomodated her transition without legislation, but as it is they don't really have a legal choice whether or not to accomodate her -- they are required by law to accomodate her transition.

And of course, Christine Daniels' case is one more case that proves one can be male-to-female transperson and still really, really like sports.

All I can say is...
Wow, and go Christine!

This is important.  I'm sure that she has a large readership, and maybe she can change some minds.  I'm not a fan of sports, but I'm glad that the sports world has her.

Whoohoo!!!
Way to go, Christine!  That's SOOO cool and gutsy!

Cue to the theofascists...
...in 3, 2, 1.

You just know that Bam-Bam, Petey, and others are gonna chime in with their ol'e sexually confused need doctors not surgery and see how this will lead to more men in dresses crapola.

sigh.

But way-to-go Christine! As if this wasn't a medically controlled, well thought out, last ditch effort to find congruity after 40 years of trying all alternatives.

The fundies just have answers for everybody, they don't even need to know the facts first!

Way to go California (and LA Times)

Attagirl!
I'm very glad for Christine and wish her the best, but while she hasn't lost her job, I wonder if there will be some changes in her access to the men's locker rooms?  Just because discrimination is illegal doesn't mean that it disappears.

I love her attitude
and wish her the very best as she moves through this process.

Sign of the Times
I find great relief that another sister doesn't have to suffer inside.  Her job with the Times seems to be secure, and that will aid to a successful transition.  Of course she will find unwelcoming venues, but she will be given the chance to do her job, and that is what really counts.

I wish her the best and success on her transition.

If I make sense? it was quite by accident.

good story
I love it.  In the article, Christine is recounting telling her news at co-workers, liked this one:'

"I broke the news to Tim by beginning, "Are you familiar with the movie 'Transamerica'?" Tim nodded. "Well, welcome to my life," I said.

Tim seemed more perplexed than most as I nervously launched into my story.

Finally, he had to explain, "I thought you said 'Trainspotting.' I thought you were going to tell me you're a heroin addict."

being Trans has no relationship to sports
yes,apparently,
being Trans has no relationship to sports,
(or other likes and dislikes) that's seems true.
there are a couple of Spanish Trans professional futbol
(soccer )players,i won't say who. (outing) and also the tennis star.....there are probably many more Trans and genderqueer and "harry benjamin syndrome"(TS) people then any one is aware of....good luck to her.

Call me a troglodyte...
Call me a troglodyte (I'm a 61-year old dyke, by the way) if you will, but I just don't feel thrilled by this story.

Mike Penner is currently married (as far as I can tell) to another LA Times sportswriter, Lisa Dillman.  What about the impact on her of what he is doing?

Over and over, I read about men in their 40s who say they've always known they were "really" women; yet, they led heterosexual lives, marrying and often fathering children.  Then comes the mid-life slump in testosterone and, voila, it's time to transition.  It seems selfish.

Selfish?
Would you also consider a married woman in her 40s who comes out as lesbian to be "selfish"? You are 61 years old. Did you ever spend any time in the closet before you came out? What if during the time you were closeted and were afraid to deal with your sexuality you went with family and social pressure to lead a heterosexual life, marrying a man and having kids. Does that mean you should then never come out as lesbian and continue to live your life in misery just to avoid being seen as "selfish"? Or would it be selfish of your husband to insist that you never live your life as your true self? Coming out in mid-life as transgender is no different than coming out in mid-life as gay.

I myself transitioned in my 40s. Was it selfish of me to do that to avoid terminal depression and suicide?

And don't try to make it sound that transitioning is just something middle aged men do on a whim due to lowered testosterone. Only the transgendered who have been through decades of emotional torture decide to completely upend their personal, professional and social lives and risk losing their job, family and friends to transition after having a mid-life slump. The majority just buy sports cars or have affairs.

Yes, you are a troglodyte. Also a bit of a transphobe, it would seem.

That's a good rebuttal, Stephanie.
However, the sportswriter is selfish because we're all selfish: everyday in every way.  There's no other way.  As you note, a lesbian who won't comply to social/familial norms and pretend to be straight and affect a femme appearance in compliance of gender roles is selfish.  Even Mother Teresa was selfish and she admitted it, confessing that she did what she did for the sake of her salvation.  As Christopher Hitchens notes in his scalding book, Mother Teresa's selfishness often greatly inconvenienced others, such as when she demanded that all her temporary residents be stripped of carpet, even if she were spending just a night in an apartment.

As far as attributing change of gender role to a drop in testerone, that's both willy-nilly silly and reveals a lack of understanding of testosterone.  A 90-year old man has about as much testosterone as a 19-year old man.  What the 90-year old lacks is an equal ability to process it.

What Steph and Holly said!
Plus, how do you know that Ms. Dillman isn't all for this transition?  They're married because they presumably love each other and want what's best for the other.  Being transgendered and married, I'm pretty sure they've discussed this aspect of their lives.  Unlike you, I AM thrilled by this story; what I'm not thrilled about is the long, hard road that I know lies  ahead of Ms. Daniels.

Carol, you need to read a bit more of what trans is
This statement is something I would expect from the AFA and such,

Over and over, I read about men in their 40s who say they've always known they were "really" women; yet, they led heterosexual lives, marrying and often fathering children.  Then comes the mid-life slump in testosterone and, voila, it's time to transition.  It seems selfish.

Yes, I was 38 when I came out, yes I tried to live as a male, as that my body dictacted that is what I was supposed to be.  23 years before that, I did tell my parents, my guidence counsler, and two psychologists.  Iwas told it is just a phase that some adolecent males go through.  2 years later I was treated for depression.  I was told to do more "male" things.  So I did my best at it.

That is what society did back than.  As for a  mid-life slump in testosterone, not real.  I hated sex as trying to be the male, that was the worst part for me.

Yes, I lived that lie for 38 years, was married for 12, and have two wonderful daughters.

Now the times have changed, my sisters and brothers are allowed to come out at much earlier ages, transition in middle and high school, and avoid living the lie, marriage and children.

And that is a problem now for them, the inability to have family, due to Bull Shit laws.  but hopefully that will change for them soon as well.

If I make sense? it was quite by accident.

Hmmm...
I understand that a feminist position is that "biology is not destiny".  But you seem to deny that same consideration to transsexuals...all of the sudden biology becomes destiny when *you* are uncomfortable with the results.

Janice Raymond, 2007 version, with a almost transparent wrapper of "civility".  Bah!

Carol Anne
Carol Anne,

At this moment on the East Coast ABC is airing Barbara Walters' program on trans kids (20/20).

Many of us are working assiduously to allow the next generation to grow up as themselves from the start so they will not have to make the compromises and sacrifices we made to become part of a generally unaccepting society. You should have a little empathy with those closer to your age since you know full well just how difficult life has been for sexual minorities in America.
