I remember this...

I heard about it during the campaign in 2004.

It sucked then, and continues to suck now.

Under Clinton's admin we got the gifts of DOMA and DADT, so this is not much of a surprise...but it still hurts, doesn't it?

Yeah, that's about right. He was "not having sex" with Monica at the same time he signed DOMA.

Part of Clinton's current glow is that Bush is SOOO incompetent. But he was and is a typical white southern Dem, who will toss all sorts of "other" people under the bus for political gain.

According to Howard Dean's memoir....

...Clinton told him he had "forfeited the right to be president" when he signed his state's civil unions law.  So this seems perfectly in character.

Clinton's anti-homo advice to Kerry was revealed in 2005.  I recall it was in either Time or Newsweek, then picked up by TV. 

Anyone who finds this surprising- about Clinton, I mean- wake up and smell the frappucino.

Horses mouths

I'd feel better about ratcheting up my rage again if we heard from either Kerry or Clinton about this.  It's too easy for a third party to say if he wants to sell a book. 

I'm always eager to be first in line to be pissed off, so I need to be selective these days.  It would really be shitty to help a SALESMAN like Shrum sell a book that makes LGBT people out to be suckers. 

Would we listen to the writing on the wall if it is true?  How many of us would still vote Dem because its better than than the alternative?

how bad the Dems will have to sell us out before I stop voting for them. I'm sort of an eternal optimist and always have hope that it's going to get better, that we can elect some Dems who are more-or-less on our side. And then I start thinking that maybe I should give a little more serious consideration to emigrating to Canada as a skilled worker before I'm 45 and start losing some of my 77 points.

Is Shrum a Democrat?

Lately it seems to me as ALL the election advisors are really ad men for the corporate interests and that means they are all basically Republi-Nazis.

Then we have Naomi Wolf who has made a career of turning out her version of other people's books giving us the rehashed and dumbed down version as seen through Naomi 'the center of the universe' Wolf.

So instead of getting honesty we get weasel words and presentations carefully analized to appeal to demographics.  We want some one to run the country, not turn us into imperialistic murderers. Maintain the national infrastructure, protect the equal rights of all. 

Instead we get a marketing campaign aimed at selling us the next imperialist corporate shill who will neglect the infrastructure, involve us in violating the rights of nations all over the planet to line the pockets of the rich.  Then to top that one off they will treat most poor, people of color, sexual minorities and women as sub-human as though our validity and equality should be open to debate and a vote.

I watched "The Good Shepard" about the formation of the CIA,  Skull and Bones all the way.

Ever notice how shut out the people who might really represent us are?  Kucinch, Gravel even Ron Paul.  We may be able to get them as represenitives and senators....but lead the nation..  Are you for real?  Imagine Barbara Lee as POTUS

What is a Democrat?

A better question might be:  Why do Democrats have the reputation of being advocates for the underdog? That is a really complicated question.

At the conclusion of the suffrage movement in the late nineteen tens, the Democrats had it all - House, Senate and Presidency.  They blocked the vote for suffrage as much as they could until the Republican party started to make them look bad for ignoring the issue.  Once the Dems started to believe that it was costing them votes, they stopped resisting.  Their relenting didn't make it an easy victory, but they didn't do anything to help persuade the nation that it was unjust and dangerous to prevent women from voting. 

FDR and Elinore gave Democrats the good reputation...and the party has been f*cking it up ever since.

In last Fall's election, Rep Lee received the highest percentage vote of supporters in her district than any other in California.  I think it was 85-87%.  The next closest was Maxine Waters with 84%. 

Suzy, good point about "secondary" candidates.  I seem to be forever voting for the "ideal" and therefore non mainstream. 

This whole headlines makes me feel like I went on a bad date with Bill.

Don't forget

that Clinton is from Arkansas.  As much as he tries to look non-discriminatory and inclusive (e.g., office space in Harlem), I think he's still basically a good ole boy in disguise.  I think the story of his advice to Kerry is true, given his record with respect to LGBT issues.

because he was far better than Dumbya's dad or Viagra Bob when it came to acknowledging our existence.  True, we took some major hits during his presidency, but DADT was REALLY the fault of assholes like Colin Powell, Sam Nunn and the other bluedog dems, and the republicans and their conservative lapdogs.  In fact, Colin Powell should have been court martialed for, not only defying his commander-in-cheif, but for publicly speaking out against him when Clinton first proposed lifting the ban.  Powell is slime of the earth. 

I won't offer any excuse for Clinton on DOMA...that was just pure cowardness against Gingrich's congressional scapegoating.

I don't buy this argument for a minute.

Nobody should get a pass.

DADT might have "really" been the fault of a lot of people. But -- correct me if I'm wrong -- I believe that if you looked at the bill that put DADT on the books, it carries the signature of William Jefferson Clinton. Same with DOMA. His hancock is right there.

And as Harry Truman observed, that is where the buck stops. It's the presidents job to do what is right even when the Powells and the Nunns won't.

I liked Clinton for all sorts of other reasons, but there is no way I'm giving him one iota of a pass on this one. And I won't for Hillary either. And if anyone asks my why I distrust her (and many of my friends have!) all I got to do is point to her advisor.

Bill Clinton Deserves No Pass

I've had it up to here (I'm pointing at my neck) with certain Stepin Fetchit-style homos who still trot out these old chestnuts: Don't Ask/Don't Tell is better than an outright ban and it was FORCED on Clinton; the Defense of Marriage Act is better than having us locked up and killed or whatever, and was FORCED on Clinton.

One thing I've noticed about Our Bill-- he is as passive as a Scientologist Husband on the honeymoon night.  Things were always done TO Bill Clinton, whether it was legistlation or sex.

They don't care if more people die as long as they have "a chance at the White House".  While more die from Iraq and America.
