Are we sure they aren't visitors from Bizarro World, or that alternate universe from that Star Trek episode, "Mirror, Mirror"?  Shouldn't they be forced to wear eye patches or goatees so we can see they are really eeeeeevil?

I think that it is more likely that in Bizarro World extremely religious people are loving and altruistic people who have cultivated tremendous spiritual depth and empathy.

That would explain why every now and then one gets lost and turns up here... but only every rare now and then.

Satan's son, who is red, mischievous, and behorned, admitted that he was an imp, but qualified, "Just because I have horns doesn't make me horny, at least not for that guy.  I thought Dad was bad, but he can't compare to that creep."

President Bush is being arraigned on charges of pandering to a minor and trying to engage in a devilish act.

Satan's son did have one nice thing to say about President Bush: "Dad's a fan of his wars and I am too.  I prefer his Iraqi War, but Dad especially likes his war on poor people.  So, Dad's going to be his lawyer.  We can't have a guy like that behind bars."

Hypocrisy Theory

I've noticed that so many of these holier-than-thou types turn out to be far less holier than me.  I wonder, why is that?  Why does this guano loco evangenital or that guano loco American Taliban keep telling me what to do with my tallywhacker, to whom, how, and when, when it is so obvious they are unable to follow those rules themselves?  Do they not smell the stench of their own hypocrisy?

There's the theory of projection, that one perceives in one's opponent the flaws and faults that one sees in themselves.  I think that's part of it, but it's bigger than that alone.

My theory is this: the wingnut, the fundie, the evangenital is so certain of the validity of their fairie tales and so consumed by their own lusts, greed, vanity, pride, gluttony, sloth, and vengeance (did I get all seven?) that they suffer constantly from the dread fear of hellfire and damnation.  They're self-terrorists.  They see Salma Hayek (or, I suppose, Jake Gyllenhall) in a low cut dress, they feel their drool building and their pocket pup-tent rising and their eyes mentally undressing her and their minds contemplating various positions, thrusts, and squeals -- and simultaneously, that li'l angel on their shoulder is beating them up over feeling these very natural urges.  (None of this is shocking to regular Blenders, we've all espoused this projection theory before.)

But the icing on the cake is that the evangenital thinks YOU suffer this same dementia.  The evangenital is so consumed by their sinful nature that they can't imagine that you don't have the same lack of control over your own sinful nature.  Thus the need for virginity pledges, no sex education, and the constant demonization of people who openly proclaim to be free from such guilt and self-destruction over the natural processes of the hypothalamus.

Shorter:  When a politician barks about sexual sin, that's the guy you want to party with.

When you believe

that good people go to heaven and bad people go to hell, it's imperative that you keep yourself ahead of the bell curve. 

So the worse your own personal mores, the more monsters you need to believe in to keep your own soul safe. 

They need to demonize us.  We're what promises them that stroll through the pearly gates.  This is what reason cannot prevail against.

Amazing Grace

I know I am in the minority this blogsite but wanted to give my opionion.

What happened to Mr. Privette is more of a reason we should all know we need a Savoir.  That is why Christ died on the cross to redeem us from ourselves and our failures.  He paid the price for our sins on the cross so we can one day stand before a Holy God and spend eternity in heaven. It's not about what we do to have right standing with God.  It is about WHAT God did through Jesus Christ  ..we only have to believe and that gives us a relationship with God as our father and forgiveness. 

 WE all know in our hearts that we are capable of doing wrong.  Just look at the paper everyday and see how far sin can take someone.  Mr. Privette did choose wrong (only God knows his heart and knows if he is a sincere believer or a hypocrite) but God offers him the same forgivenss we all need. He will suffer consequences and should, but his failure does not CHANGE WHO GOD IS OR WHO THE CHURCH OF JESUS IS.

That is how John Newton saw it when he wrote "Amazing Grace".  He was a slave trader who raped women on slaves ships and was changed and FORGIVEN by the grace of God.
