Blend-o-licious endorsements...

The Christian Civic League of Maine's Mike Hein calls Pam's House Blend:
"a leading source of radical homosexual propaganda, anti-Christian bigotry, and radical transgender advocacy."

He is "praying that Pam Spaulding will "turn away from her wicked and sinful promotion of homosexual behavior." (CCLM's web site, 10/15/07)

Ex-gay "Christian" activist James Hartline on Pam:
"I have been mocked over and over again by ungodly and unprincipled anti-christian lesbians."
(from "Six Years In Sodom: From The Journal Of James Hartline," 9/4/2006, written from the "homosexual stronghold" of Hillcrest in San Diego).

"Pam is a 'twisted lesbian sister' and an 'embittered lesbian' of the 'self-imposed gutteral experiences of the gay ghetto.'" -- 9/5/2008

Peter LaBarbera of Americans for Truth Against Homosexuality heartily endorses the Blend, calling Pam:

A "vicious anti-Christian lesbian activist."
(Concerned Women for America's radio show [9:15], 1/25/07)

"A nutty lesbian blogger."
(MassResistance radio show [16:25], 2/3/07)

Pam's House Blend always seems to find these sick f*cks. The area of the country she is in? The home state of her wife? I know, they are everywhere. Pam just does such a great job of bringing them out into the light.

Mike Signorile show today at 4:30: gay pastor slated to open Obama/McClurkin concerts

by: Pam Spaulding

Thu Oct 25, 2007 at 10:30:00 AM EDT

Last night I posted that Barack Obama's team has selected Rev. Andy Sidden of Garden of Grace United Church of Christ in Columbia, SC to speak at the “Embrace the Change” concerts that feature recloseted anti-gay Grammy winning gospel singer Donnie McClurkin this weekend. The openly gay pastor will be  interviewed by Mike Signorile on his show today, broadcast on SIRIUS OutQ 109.

***

I think discussion of the National Black Justice Coalition's role in this is critical, because some Obama supporters (or, generally, critics of my post over at Salon) have tried to couch any criticism of the candidate as white gays attacking Obama ostensibly to hide their opposition to him based on race, or somehow saying gay discrimination somehow trumps racial discrimination. It's not a zero sum game.

The fact that the NBJC was right on the McClurkin issue -- and in contact with the campaign regarding the addition of Sidden -- highlights the marginalization and invisibility of black LGBTs and how the McClurkin matter affects this subgroup in this story.

I look forward to hearing about how Sidden feels about being openly gay pastor in the South; for instance, what are the challenges he faces, and how open does he feel he can be in Columbia, SC with his partner?

It would also be good to know whether he interacts with other pastors from less progressive churches to effect change regarding homophobia in the religious black community.

***

Queerty has Mike Gravel's reaction to the mess ("Gravel On Obama's Gay Gospel Gaffe"), and as usual, Fighting Mike doesn't hold back. A snippet:

Barack Obama's refusal to dump the anti-gay singer from his South Carolina event shouldn't surprise anyone, especially gays. The fundraising phase of the campaign is over; now the candidates are focusing on courting voters. Gay fundraisers lined the pockets of Clinton, Obama and Edwards despite their refusal to support your marriage rights. Now they'll further distance themselves from your cause to get votes in places like SC. When the general election starts, forget it.

This is what happens when the LGBT community doesn't stand up and insist that their candidates express a total commitment to equality. One piece of advice: Be suspicious anytime you hear politicians talk about their 'moral values.' No one collects $100 million without compromising his or her moral values constantly.

Go check out the rest.

Mike Signorile
Major props to Mike for getting Rev. Sidden so quickly. It will be interesting to hear what he has to say... but I think having homophobes and homosexuals sharing a stage is just going to piss more people off.

Nothing can help Obama win
Obama doesn't stand a chance against Hillary, and if he is thinking to become her Vice President, forget that.  Voters are seeing through religion, gay or otherwise, and the motives behind it.  These are people who have not developed as adults, childhood "Jesus" indoctrination..  Religon and groups raising money around "faith" is a coverup to get power, preying on the gullible.

Make alot of noise. Life is short.

It's a great piece at Salon, Pam
Funny that such a great opportunity came up for you to write about black religious homophobia and how it affects Democratic politics--one of those important and underdiscussed issues that you've been trying to bring attention and honesty to for a long time.  Thanks for doing an excellent job taking advantage of the opportunity.

Testify!

Here's Mike Gravel:

One piece of advice: Be suspicious anytime you hear politicians talk about their 'moral values.' No one collects $100 million without compromising his or her moral values constantly.

Now there is some testifying you would never hear from a gospel stage.

Gravel's willingness to tell the truth marks him as a visitor from a distant planet. At this point, that may the only hope we homo sapiens have left.

On the other hand...

The flip side is that there are many white liberals who -- because they're white -- are quick to jump on any condemnation of a black person, especially by other blacks, as a way of attacking "the black community" and setting free their inner racist. They've got a license to express their privilege now, they feel.

This is why it's important for whites who are really progressive to support black criticism of blacks, but not run off beyond that into crazy accusations that a black candidate is catering to "his own community" by using "gay-bashers and wife-beaters" or suggesting that he should become a "valet" for a white politician.

The real criticism -- the valid stuff, which you are writing about -- gets lost and the topic becomes all about, in coded terms, how white people really shouldn't trust blacks in the first place.

Swell...identity politics add to the mix

I don't know how much more retarded things can get...how do we know this guy is white?  Please don't let this issue boil down to percentages of race.  In those terms I wonder how we would measure an ex-gays homosexuality.  According to Pams latest post his gayness is skyrocketing over 50%.  As an ex-gay he would always carry 25% no matter how many wives and children he collects.

How would anyone come to the conclusion that it would be appropriate for a gay white preacher to address this controversy?

What could his perspective possibly add that would help Obama?  If I could, I would have heard the Signorile show and maybe hear an answer.

I found this item to be relevant and appalling:

  Romney embraces Jones endorsement

By GLEN JOHNSON, Associated Press

from yahoo news

Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney embraced his association with Christian conservative Bob Jones III Thursday despite Jones' sharp criticism of the Mormon faith central to Romney's life.

"I'm proud to have the respect of people and the support of people who don't agree with my faith, but agree that I'm the right person to be president," the former Massachusetts governor said while campaigning here. "And I'm not running for preacher; I'm running for president."

In the 2000 election, George W. Bush similarly basked in the reputation of Bob Jones University, a Greenville, S.C., school named for Jones's grandfather that is influential with some conservative Christians. Less than a month after a visit to the school, Bush wound up apologizing to Roman Catholic leaders for "causing needless offense."

The university teaches its students that Catholicism, like Mormonism, is a cult. At the time, it also had a policy banning interracial dating between its students. It rescinded the policy after publicity generated by Bush's visit.

The university continues a policy of banning alumni it says are "militant" homosexuals from its campus, school spokesman Jonathan Patie said Monday during an interview with The Associated Press.

Bob Jones III, the university's chancellor, said in his endorsement of Romney last week, "As a Christian, I am completely opposed to the doctrines of Mormonism." He also labeled the Mormon church an "erroneous faith," and included it in with Catholicism as a non-Christian "cult."

Nonetheless, Jones said he was backing Romney because he believes the GOP presidential contender embraces conservative values.

Romney's campaign has been touting the endorsement to skeptical evangelicals. Such support could prove critical in the Upstate area of South Carolina, the state slated to hold the third presidential primary.

Romney, bidding to become the first Mormon president, has said he understands questions about his faith, but he has also been protective of the Utah-based Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which he once served as a bishop and which he continues to back financially.

Asked Thursday how he could accept Jones's criticism of such a central facet of his life, Romney said: "Each church thinks their church is the best one or they wouldn't be going to it. ... The great thing about America is, we have our differences in viewpoint, but they don't lead to our discrimination against people based on their faith, or certainly lead to the kinds of violence we see in other places in the world."

Later, in comments certain to appeal to social conservatives, Romney jabbed at the "family values" of Democratic front-runner Hillary Rodham Clinton and her husband by harkening back to former President Clinton's affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky.

In response to a guest at a house party in Hooksett, N.H., who asked him how he would instill family values as president, Romney said: "One of the ways that you help instill, if you will, family values is by having a White House be a place that demonstrates family values. And, you know, I think during the last Clinton presidency, the White House did not demonstrate that in a way that was helpful to our nation's character."

Howard Wolfson, a spokesman for Clinton, fired back: "Hillary Clinton needs no lessons on character from a man who switches his positions on a daily basis."

excuse me Partick, but
are you actually convinced that Rev Sidden is white?  why?  i see no mention anywhere by people who know him.  if he's white, then he's an odd choice for sure.  but i'm not sure he is white.  any evidence you can share?

Signorile show

I don't have the transcript, but it was concluded by Michaelangelo that he was not African American, and that he was chosen because Obama belongs to the same church, United Church of Christ.

Jasmyne Cannick's remarks
Michaelangelo read her remarks to him.  And he didn't refute them about being white.

thank you.
i guess you can;t get more direct than asking the guy himself!  in that case, i'm with jasmyn - what does obama think he's doing sending a white guy to this tour?  really, it does seem that obama knows nothing about the intersection of race, religion and sexual orientation in this country.  and why is his campaign communicating publicly w/HRC but not NBJC?  is he trying to reinforce the misconception that gay is a white thing? (these are all rhetorical rantings, Charley, i'm not asking them of you necessarily).

I just wasn't sure...

...other than what people, bloggers, etc (in particular John Halitosis) have said about him I just assumed the guy would be black and I didn't want to take the word of second hand sources.

I do find it an odd choice for Obama.  Is it a calculated one?

He won't be confrontational
He has only been asked to lead a prayer.  Turn the other cheek, and hope they don't bash queers in the parking lot.

Make alot of noise. Life is short.

I like Gravel...

...He's a Mensch.  He read over half of the Pentagon Papers into the public (Congressional) Record, in about 1972, which sanitized the NYTImes's publication of the PP.

Unfortunately, he's probably a bit too old to be president, but he has more backbone than any of the other Democrats running put together.
