The relentless anti-gay rhetoric comes back to haunt people like Amy Contrada, one half-of the sad-sack duo in the Bay State dedicated to fighting the Homosexual Agenda, MassResistance. At Queer Today, Claudia Contrada talks about her participation in a production of The Laramie Project (one her mom protested against), but she came out in the interview as well. What is it like for you to be supportive of gay rights but have an anti-gay activist parent?
It’s difficult because we clash horribly. It’s really stressful because there’s always an argument going on.
Do you identify as LGB or T?
I am a lesbian, which my mom still does not get. She just says that I am confused. I realized in around eighth grade, but I was in denial for quite some time because I was scared due to my mother constantly saying that homosexuality is wrong. How can it ever be wrong to love though? That’s what I’d like to know. What a brave gal. I wonder if Amy and Brian Camenker will be unhinged enough to discuss the matter on their radio show.
MassResistance Watch says the Saturday night performance of The Laramie Project is sold out; the possibly soon to be bankrupt Westboro Baptist hate machine is also slated to show up. Blender Herb, who follows the New England bigots regularly, emailed this to me: I knew that Amy Contrada had a son who was away in school. I always figured that he must have shared her views on homosexuality. After reading the interview with Contrada's adopted daughter Claudia, who is a lesbian, I realize that even the son does not support her views. I cannot imagine being brought up in a family headed by a witch like Contrada. The reason I support gay issues is because my mother admitted to me, years after enduring an unhappy marriage, that she was a lesbian. She lived in a household that would have accepted her as she was but she was afraid to embarrass them. The hell she went through all those years hiding her feelings while living in a supporting family must pale in comparison to the ordeal Claudia Contrada must go through daily. She is one courageous young girl. Imagine the crap at home she must go through after this interview. The other side of the coin is her mother. What kind of a woman could do what she does knowing her daughter is a lesbian. I cannot fathom what evil must be in that woman's mind. No real mother would ever put her daughter through this. The sadness that I feel for this girl is overwhelming.
