I just wanted to say "thank-you" for the video. I posted a comment below stating how it affected me, and what i can do in my everyday life to combat ignorance. For me, its about showing up and speaking out, even when its uncomfortable.  Its easier to hate a "fag or dyke". When i started speaking up and telling people in my life about my journey, my faith, and my heart, i found in some cases; slight cracks of hope and light started to open up. Sometimes i found people in my circle really didnt get who i am,,, and they didnt really care to;  they are not "safe" to have in my life.  Thank-you again for the shot-in-the-arm. I am affirmed and resolved to BE ME in ALL situations, and to SPEAK-UP, ACT-UP!!! SKELLY D

Retitled it from Dear Dr. Laura to Dear Sally Kern.  Really, that's all that you have to change about it.  

She's responded to some other people who wrote her, but I suspect she's had an absolute avalanche of incoming e-mail, snail mail, telephone calls, even telegrams!  She's either too busy, too ashamed, or too ignorant to formulate a response to that.  And, I think 'ashamed' left town.

Did anyone notice her WILD EYES, they are the eyes of a true FANATIC -- and how appropriate because that's precisely what she is -- a fanatic.

To think that this woman is exposed to children in the capacity of a 'teacher'.  How many little minds has she poisoned?  How many of her students will wind up in prison, or worse, for beating or killing LGBT people.  Hate doesn't occur in a vacuum, it is taught.  And you know someone as strident, as unhinged, and as fanatical as she could hardly avoid imparting her animus to her students. It wouldn't matter if they were second graders, she'd find a way to indoctrinate them with her crackpot hate-style.

I would argue

that Kern alone is responsible for her remarks as an elected official.

Her members of her house of worship or her husband and their beliefs may be equally bigoted I don't believe means they should be flooded with emails about Kern. They can choose to believe whatever they want.

My concern is that she is accountable to all her constituents, including those who are gay and lesbian - they have a right to hear these bottom feeding comments from Kern and should be supported by our polite, direct arguments that she is serving them poorly by projecting her misguided, hateful personal values as a public official.

I went to this link, and according to posts there, this lady has a GAY SON. Whoopsey!!! I don't know if it is true (See what Talulah Bankhead said about Tab Hunter), but if it is, then I just can't fathom how these god-fearing, thoroughly hetero, homo hating, bible-loving, fabulous parent true American heroes can...

KEEP CHURNING THE MO'S OUT OF THE BABY FACTORY.

It makes me just want to knock on their heads and answer the echoes with, "Hello? Anybody home? Anything there besides your hate, fear, and disappointment? Have you ever heard of projection?"

    I must say that i have many friends who think Sally Kern holds a view that is "RARE AND ON THE FRINGE "  ,, When i read the comments that Rep. Kern made i was startled and felt a little fear rise up.   Then i watched the video of all my brothers and sisters holding up the signs and speaking out,, and i felt empowered!! I think we must speak up.. In our places of work, play and worship...It is easier to hate someone you have never met. When we "show-up" and speak the truth:; let people see who we are:; share a little of our story, it puts a human face on what was once only a "word, or lable".PEACE AND LOVE to my Brothers and Sisters, keep up the great work you are doing, keep telling the truth!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sally Kern's actions call for action

Hello:

Enjoyed reading some of the comments here re. the outrageous and harmful comments made by Rep. Sally Kern.  

Blogging is great and it can have an impact.  But let's not forget that if we care about the issue we need to take a stand.  Letters, emails and calls need to go to Sally Kern's office, to Oklahoma Governor Brad Henry, Speaker of the House Chris Benge and Senate President Pro-Tempore Mike Morgan.  You can find their mailing addresses and emails online easily by googling them.  It only takes a minute and it is sure to have an IMPACT!  We should also be writing to local and national newspapers, media outlets and other blogs to point out the reckless and hate-mongering comments of this publicly elected -- ie. representative of the people - official.

Take a minute, make your voices heard.  Thanks.

THERE ARE COURT RECORDS that show a JESSE KERN in court for oral sodomy

There have been rumors online that Sally Kern has a gay son.  I do not know for a fact if she has a gay son, but her official OK House of Representatives page previously said she had grown sons named Jesse and Nathan.  After the scandal broke, Kern REMOVED the note stating that she had two sons from her official House webpage -- very suspicious.

A blog on Queerty.com  said that court records accessible online show a Jesse Kern (I cannot confirm that this is the same Jesse Kern who is Sally's son) was charged with attempted oral sodomy in the Oklahoma State Courts.  I just went online and the court records are there.

This Jesse Kern was also charged with "trying to obtain money by false pretences" and driving with a suspended lisence.

Meanwhile, more internet chatter led us to the Oklahoma State Courts Network, a beautiful internet archive of the state's criminal records. And guess what we found?! Three - count 'em, three! - cases against a man named Jesse Jacob Kern, who may or may not be related to Sally and Steve Kern, who just happen to have a son named Jesse.
The first Kern case involved some attempted oral sodomy and went down, so to speak, on March 27, 1989. That charge was dismissed by request of the state on June 9, 1989. What's most interesting, however, is that this Mr. Kern just happened to be in court on that same day on a charge of trying to "obtain money by false pretenses," whatever that means. Kern also stepped up to a driving under suspension charge. He was convicted of both on October 10, 1989.

I am not writing this to put any blame on Sally Kern's son.  The point is that it is so often the case when there is a crusading right-winger damning the gays... we later find out they themselves are a closeted homosexual or that their family is somehow touched intimately by the issue of homosexuality.

I have also read online that Sally's husband has recently publicly denied that they have a gay son.  It would certainly be a tough family to grow up in.

I do think this facet of the story is relevant as it gives us a more complete picture of who this person Sally Kern is.  She put herself and her family in the spotlight by making outrageous and hateful comments in a public forum.

Hopefully some thorough investigating and reporting will be done on Kern and her misinformed views.

I think it's incredibly irresponsible of you (and others) to be posting the court records of -A- Jesse Kern. Can you add? Seriously.

Sally Kern's son Jesse is 31. These offenses occurred in 1989, making him 12-13 years old in 1989 (depending on when his birthday falls). Clearly, these are ADULT records, not juvenile.

No, that's not the same person.  Her son is named:  Jesse Aaron Kern, DOB: 05/11/1976; 31 years of age; now resides in Des Moines, Iowa, running a School of Metaphysics.  Poor kid never had a chance.  I have written the attached open letter for Ms. Kern, her Democratic opponents in the Oklahoma House and the Oklahoma Governor, hoping that they might intercede to mitigate some of her damaging remarks. It has also been posted on numerous websites. Thanks for all of your help.

Your comments as aired on the website of Channel 6 make me very sad and disheartened.  I am sad that I wasted so many years teaching medical students in this State to care about ALL of their patients, even the gay ones whom you obviously consider "trash" in our society, and even worse than terrorists or a cancer in our midst.  My approach was (and is) that ALL people deserve to be treated with respect and excellent medical care, regardless of their color, creed, gender, national origin, sexual orientation, and yes, Ms. Kern, even their religious beliefs!  In 29 years of teaching medical physiology to several thousand medical students in 6 states, I endeavored to try and bring out the best in all of them regardless of my own personal beliefs and ethics.  You see, Ms. Kern, your hurtful comments may garner votes for you at the polls, but they destroy the very reason the rest of us work so hard to make our State and our Nation a wonderful place for all to live free of religious bigotry and judgmental statements like you obviously made in a public forum as a public servant.  I also read the unfortunate news of your son's gay orientation and his subsequent banishment to avoid embarrassment to the family.  I do hope that you will consider some sort of counseling and/or attending a PFLAG meeting or a similar support group rather than trying to come to grips with reality on your own as this has obviously not been successful in the past.
