OMG!  That is so creepy.  It's hard to believe it's for real.  Of course, fundy junky that I am, I had to click through some of the links.  Donny has a MySpace page, the background of which is about the campiest thing I've seen - well it's at least as campy as the Mr. Show clip from the other day :)  I hope these people keep making videos like this and they make their way into the mainstream.  If it's a parody, I wish the same thing.

Two Things

(1) This is clearly satire... and very, very funny.

(2) Even if it wasn't, we shouldn't be encouraging the government to censor ideas that we disagree with.  Even if this dude really beleive what he sang, which he doesn't, it will still show how entirely ridiculous the fundies are.  Talking about ridiculous things in public (whether they are intentionally ridiculous or not) is always better than trying to get the government to suppress speech we disagree with.  Plus, if we can prevent them from saying god hates a fag, then  they would be able to prevent me from saying: "Fundamentalists probably only subscribe to their delusional beliefs because they are uneducated hicks and, for the most part, inbred, so their brains are not able to handle such tasks as the reasoning we normal folks do on a daily basis."  -- if I was so inclined to say such a hateful thing.

The "Bands To Watch Out For"

This may be the funniest thing on the whole site. Especially since Sufjan Stevens, sensitive and artistic as he is, is also a known Christian working as a musician.

As for the "Safe" bands... I didn't know P.O.D. and Underoath were gay affirming. Back before I came out in the late 90's, I used to be pretty tight with some good friends of POD (one of whom is actually in the band now), and the people I knew were about as anti-gay as it got... though I never heard the POD guys say anything one way or another on it.

This is one of two things...

1.  A viral marketing campaign for a new movie or TV series that features some kind of ex-gay storyline.  The fact that "Donnie Davies" has come out of nowhere with a music video, a ministry and a band that no one has ever heard of before is highly suspect.  And the band's homepage has no working links other than back to the video and MySpace page.  It's clearly a marketing set-up, or...

2.  As another poster said above, it's yet another brilliant parody from the guys who brought us Landover Baptist Church and Betty Bowers: America's Best Christian.  The "C.H.O.P" acronym is almost a dead giveaway.

This isn't for real, so don't become the laughingstock for whoever did this (by supporting bans and such).

One of the correspondents on YouTube emailed the guy and got a response.

I wrote Donnie Davies and asked: "I cannot tell if you mean your song as a parody or not. Could you please explain?"

He wrote back and said "No, no Sir. We're very serious. We made the video for serious reasons. Some people seem to think it is funny. I guess we can understand that but what's been happening in this country isn't funny unless you have a really dark sense of humor.

"If have to have people in authority, we think they have to be trustworthy and honest. We hate what homosexuals liar like Ted Haggard, John Paulk and Mark Foley are doing. We hope that our song can help just a little bit to run sick creeps like that out of town on a rail. We hope people will learn that they can't trust people so easily."

I agree with the previous poster, this is part of a viral campaign.  It has all the hallmarks.  And, I've seen this guy somewhere before.  I wish I could place him, but I can't.  A few months ago, I was doing research on some viral marketing firm in SF.  I think, but can be 100% certain, that I saw a picture with this guy in it while doing that research.  I'm checking into it now, and will post back if I find any more info...

Still suspect viral campaign...

Someone has gone to a lot of effort to erase any trace of who/what is behind this.  All the whois data is going through some intentionally cryptic organization in Scottsdale, AZ.  This is not a step that Joe Blow off the street would undertake.  I think that's their one and only mistake so far, just a wee bit too cryptic...
