The Christian Civic League of Maine's Mike Hein calls Pam's House Blend:
"a leading source of radical homosexual propaganda, anti-Christian bigotry, and radical transgender advocacy."

He is "praying that Pam Spaulding will "turn away from her wicked and sinful promotion of homosexual behavior." (CCLM's web site, 10/15/07)

Ex-gay "Christian" activist James Hartline on Pam:
"I have been mocked over and over again by ungodly and unprincipled anti-christian lesbians."
(from "Six Years In Sodom: From The Journal Of James Hartline," 9/4/2006, written from the "homosexual stronghold" of Hillcrest in San Diego).

"Pam is a 'twisted lesbian sister' and an 'embittered lesbian' of the 'self-imposed gutteral experiences of the gay ghetto.'" -- 9/5/2008

Peter LaBarbera of Americans for Truth Against Homosexuality heartily endorses the Blend, calling Pam:

A "vicious anti-Christian lesbian activist."
(Concerned Women for America's radio show [9:15], 1/25/07)

"A nutty lesbian blogger."
(MassResistance radio show [16:25], 2/3/07)

Pam's House Blend always seems to find these sick f*cks. The area of the country she is in? The home state of her wife? I know, they are everywhere. Pam just does such a great job of bringing them out into the light.

Civil equality moves forward

by: Pam Spaulding

Tue Jun 17, 2008 at 08:00:00 AM EDT

From the LAT's online front page - what can you say? No amount of Westboro protests or bogus legal filings by Liberty Counsel (and the rest of the fundies suddenly turning to "judicial activism") could stop the march of the expansion of civil rights that began last night...

The Bilerico Project has a gallery of photos from around the state chronicling the celebration. Journalist Karen Ocamb's coverage of Robyn Tyler and Diane Olsen's wedding is here.

UPDATE: Bob Brigham at Swing State Project reposted a message to Democrats who waffle on full-out support of civil equality that was written by ally Eric Jaye, Gavin Newsom's chief strategist (in 2005; ironically it is even more relevant now). What it comes down to is a lack of leadership, and dependence on polls, focus groups, and fear. That's not how you lead. It's below the fold.

Pam Spaulding :: Civil equality moves forward
We've discussed the slow evolution of Democrats to public embrace the concept of full civil equality, and not just on marriage. It's been particularly slow for Red State Dems to get on board, as they tip toe around the issue defensively rather than point out the moral and legal flaws of the arguments of those who would restrict civil rights (see Kay Hagan for mind-blowing issue-dodging). Eric Jaye:
With a few exceptions, most Democrats simply lack credibility when they say they oppose gay marriage. We have the honor of belonging to a party that has been on the forefront of the civil rights movement for more than 50 years. Most voters, in most states, expect us to stand for civil rights - even when these very same voters are taking a go-slow approach.

So who do we think we are fooling when we mumble finely nuanced positions on gay marriage? The truth is we are only fooling ourselves.

We have now survived an entire generation of poll-tested politicians and incremental politics. Finely crafted "agreement" messages, once an innovation, are now an invitation to ridicule. Not just late at night on television, but at almost any hour, we can all enjoy a good laugh at the expense of a politician who is merely reading from a poll-tested script.

So what's the right answer when Democrats are asked, "Do you support gay marriage?" The right answer, in almost every case, is the truth. And in most cases, the truth is "Yes."

First and foremost - by saying "Yes" we are standing for something, even when the majority of voters don't yet support our position. And telling the truth makes us sound like real people, not like robo politicians. But more than this - by saying "Yes" we can seize political terrain that allows us to drive the debate, not duck it.

And we are finding that when we take the offensive on the issue of gay rights and gay marriage, we can make real progress. At the very least, we have a fighting chance when we stop ducking the issue of gay rights and start debating it with clear and concise language.

..Cautious Democrats should face the fact that no position on gay marriage is the weakest possible stance. Silence is read as support for gay marriage. And your silence is seen as political at best, cowardice at worst. As a party, we might not have chosen this fight. But it is here. Unilateral surrender is not a workable strategy.

And to my fellow consultants I would offer this hard-learned lesson. Anti-gay marriage amendments are being fought on the basis of gay marriage -- not some "hidden flaw" or "costly consequence." These measures are not analogous to some down-ballot initiative that we can define. Voters know what they are about -- gay marriage.

Our Day
HAS come!  (At least, it has in CA & MA, with more on the way.)

The beauty of love
Is also the beauty in that we're making progress. Let's hope we can keep it that way.

What's that popping sound?
Oh!  It's the heads of all the Right-Wing Homophobic Bigoted Bible-Thumpers exploding.

What a great day!  I was still in diapers when Blacks & Whites could finally get married, but I guess the level of happiness must have been this high.  What a great day!

Besser ein ende mit Schrecken als ein Schrecken ohne ende

past time
Let me just say a big congratulations to everyone in CA!  I hope that the remaining 47.5 (I'm giving NY a 0.5) states will follow soon.

LEADERSHIP.

Message forwarded to Howard Dean, Barack Obama and Move On. org. Thanks.

Now back to the FUN and CELEBRATIONS!

PROTESTORS.... and Supporters.

Lets see HATE vs LOVE..... guess who WINS this one..   We all do!

A woman from the church of Kansas pastor Fred Phelps - whose followers are known for their harsh anti-gay rhetoric - stood behind police barricades in Civic Center, holding derogatory signs and singing songs with her two children. Someone else drove around the block in a truck painted to look like an American flag that read, "Sodomy is sin."
One of the protesters, Luong Bo, said he drove up from San Jose. Bo held a giant sign that read, "Homo sex is a threat to national security."(Can't even be original has to KERN it.)

Others were there to support the couples.
One man strummed a guitar and sang "The Chapel of Love," while Kathryn Werhane threw rose petals on some of the protesters."We want to support these weddings - it's love and tolerance for real," she said. "Any proclamation of love is good with us. Why are they crashing our party?"

PHYLLIS and DEL ...waited 55 years.

Then there's spontaneous... but the reverbations will be heard in TENNESSEE and across the country. So far there are 2,303 license appointments in SF alone.... and California has 58 counties!

"We might wait a long time in Tennessee, so this is our chance," said Robert Blaudow, of Memphis. He and his partner, Derek Norman, 23, decided to get married at the Alameda County clerk's office late Monday while they were in the San Francisco Bay Area for a conference.

Fuck the Democrats
Can I just say that reading through Eric Jaye's whole spiel that Democrats should appropriate a strong stance on gay marriage just to avoid looking like equivocating wimps was more infuriating than supportive. No, its not about helping your corrupt cesspool of a party win elections.

The Democrats ...
how can we expect them to support gay marriage when they continue to ENABLE bush with his illegal wars, spying, and more?

The Democrats can't even enforce a SUBPOENAE!

I gave up expecting anything from them.  It will not surprise me if many Democratic incumbents are kicked out of our government.

Great sight to wake up to
but then it was the the last thing I saw last night too!
Love the piece by Eric Jaye.  It's still so clear to me how much criticism Mayor Newsome got back in 2004 (doesn't seem that long ago to me) for extending equality.  Remember California Diane Fienstein's now famous "too much, too soon" quote?  But, now it's clear that Newsome was in fact a real leader on this civil rights issue.  Why wait?  He saw no reason to and actively pursued the issue of equality committing the resources of his office and the city of San Francisco to it.  They were not passive.  SF City Attorney Huerra (sp) has been a strong proactive advocate all the way.
Codos to all of them.

LOVE always triumphs everything.
This is beautiful ... simply beautiful!

Too many good articles to post...find some and follow links.
LA Times has a congratulatory op/ed complete with admonishing the Nov amendment.

County Clerk Weir of Contra Costa Cty was the first to be married in his county.  (That's supposedly where the Phelps gang went instead of Monterey).

Just can't get enough of it.
Congrats again to all the wonderful couples.

Marriage in Kern County goes on
There's a nice article with video and photos of the first weddings in Kern County.  No going backwards.

Fundies in Force
It certainly appears the Fanatical Fundies are out in force today.  Some of their comments are downright hilarious.

For example, one guy argued that gays getting married was a violation of his religious liberties.

Riiiight, and 2 + 2 = 9.

Here's how COUNTY CLERK Assoc President Stephen Weirs' wedding went..
Then the PHELPS Clan from Wesboro showed up..... Will look for that blog.
This one is very cute: I know Martinez well, lived there 10 years. Courthouse near old railroad station..all fixed up...and bayside park where wedding was held I guess. Weir in a KILT... love to see it.
Same-sex matrimony in Martinez

This is Dino-Ray Ramos, fashion writer from Dressed, and I'm reporting from a Starbucks in Martinez! Here's the scoop on what went down with same-sex marriages this morning in Martinez....

6:55 a.m.: Drove into the city of Martinez. I've never been here before and it reminded me of that city in "Footloose."

7:21 a.m.: After getting a tad bit lost, I find parking and walk over to the Clerk Recorder's Office in quaint downtown Martinez. There are approximately 50 supporters out in front with rainbow paraphernalia and holding signs of support. They vary with words like "I'm straight, but not narrow" and one tongue-in-cheek one that says "Fred Phelps Marry Me."

In opposition to them are three protesters, one middle-aged woman and two female teens, sealed off in a barricaded area with signs that say "Dykes Wed," "Fags Can't Marry" and "God Hates Fag Enablers." One of the teen girls stands on a rainbow flag

I meet with my colleague, Matthias and he informs me that both parties got there at about 7 a.m.

7:22 a.m. : I notice two residents in the housing complex across the street sitting on their stoop staring at the action as the supporters sing "Give Peace a Chance."

7:24 a.m.: A guy jokingly holds up a sign that says, "Ignorance, is that a sin?" with an arrow pointing towards the protesters. It might have said "ignorant," I'm not too sure. The protesters ignore.

7:26 a.m.: The head protester, with an American flag wrapped around her waist as some sort of sarang, sings a song called "Going to the Chapel of Crap."

7:28 a.m.: The protester's voice seems exhausted. She needs a lozenge.

7:32 a.m.: A person drives by and honks his horn, giving a gesture of support. The supporters applause with recognition.

7:33 a.m.: The head protester starts to sing "Chapel of Crap" again. A guy drives by and says some harsh words directed at her. He gives her the finger - the middle one.

7:35 a.m.: Paranoia of a drive-by sets in.

7:39 a.m.: An Aramark truck honks it's horn with glee as it drives by.

7:51 a.m.: I realize the line for marriage licenses isn't that long. There a lot more supporters.

7:55 a.m.: There seems to be a bit of down time. People are just standing around and doing their thing. That said, I decide to count the cops standing across the street. There are 8 of them - and that's just across the street. They are there to serve and protect.

7:56 a.m.: Protesters sing an encore of "Chapel of Crap." Supporters retaliate with a rendition of "Chapel of Love."

7:58 a.m.: Protesters leave. The supporters applaud. The line for licenses grows by three couples.

8 a.m.: The doors of the building open. The couples file in.

8:04 a.m.: I meet Diane Miller and Barbara & Bill Hamilton-Holway. All three are Unitarian ministers. They are excited for the day's events. Miller is from Walnut Creek while the Hamilton-Holways have a church in Martinez. The latter have been doing ceremonies for a while now and they say this occasion is a great joy and it's been a long time coming.

Barbara Hamilton-Holway says that it will be great to say, "By the power invested in me by the state of California" when performing her same-sex marriage ceremonies.

8:18 a.m.: Stephen Weir, donning a traditional kilt, walks out of the building with his partner John Hemm, who is donned in a white tux jacket with black slacks. The couple du jour just got their license and did their oaths.

The small crowd adjourns to the park across the street.

8:23 a.m.: As I walk across the street to the park where the Weir ceremony will take place, my colleague Matthias tells me what went down behind the scenes. He tells me that the second couple to get a license is Stan Deller and David Weir (no relation to Stephen.) The sound of bagpipes subside my fear of a drive by.

8:25 a.m.: The bagpipes stop. A crowd of people await the big ceremony in the park.

8:30 a.m.: The bagpipes start up again and the ceremony starts. The Weir procession begins and the crowd erupts with applause. As Weir walks across the park bridge to the little ceremonial gazebo, he greets guests, both invited and not. Hemm is not too far behind him. The wedding party is draped in pretty leis of purple.

8:37 a.m.: Stephen and John are pronounced "spouses for life."

Yet another cute wedding story
Young couple, Shane and Monica, were married this am in front of LA downtown city hall by LA City Council President, Eric Garcetti (sort of a up and coming type).  Turns out Shane and Monica met when they became staff members of Garcetti's office.  It's only fitting that the man who brought them together joins them in marriage on this great day...gee, just realized, the 17th of the month is a good day for marriage equality...May 17th for Massechuttes I believe.

A Lifetime Honor
Because I was a widower and could not be second in line, they allowed me the extreme honor of signing as witness to Karen and Michelle's wedding certificate as they married in the atrium of the Butte County Administration building this morning.  It was lovely and wonderful.  Quiet and full of joy for all ... we all felt the history in this the most conservative of counties still in shock from the fire of last week.

The fight for full LGBT Equality is NOT over.  Be strong and be ready to really fight!  And read my blog in your spare time! http://ravenhurst-ravenhurst.b...
