Blend-o-licious endorsements...

The Christian Civic League of Maine's Mike Hein calls Pam's House Blend:
"a leading source of radical homosexual propaganda, anti-Christian bigotry, and radical transgender advocacy."

He is "praying that Pam Spaulding will "turn away from her wicked and sinful promotion of homosexual behavior." (CCLM's web site, 10/15/07)

Ex-gay "Christian" activist James Hartline on Pam:
"I have been mocked over and over again by ungodly and unprincipled anti-christian lesbians."
(from "Six Years In Sodom: From The Journal Of James Hartline," 9/4/2006, written from the "homosexual stronghold" of Hillcrest in San Diego).

"Pam is a 'twisted lesbian sister' and an 'embittered lesbian' of the 'self-imposed gutteral experiences of the gay ghetto.'" -- 9/5/2008

Peter LaBarbera of Americans for Truth Against Homosexuality heartily endorses the Blend, calling Pam:

A "vicious anti-Christian lesbian activist."
(Concerned Women for America's radio show [9:15], 1/25/07)

"A nutty lesbian blogger."
(MassResistance radio show [16:25], 2/3/07)

Pam's House Blend always seems to find these sick f*cks. The area of the country she is in? The home state of her wife? I know, they are everywhere. Pam just does such a great job of bringing them out into the light.

SC: overseas campaign to attract gay tourism yanked

by: Pam Spaulding

Sun Jul 13, 2008 at 12:00:00 PM EDT

While it's a positive sign that someone in the state of South Carolina thought it was a good idea to attract gay tourism dollars -- in this case an ad campaign that was tied to gay pride festivities in London -- you still have to wonder what were they thinking.

This kind of pro-gay public position is a no-brainer for Atlanta, Boston, and New Orleans --  cities that participated in the campaign -- but SC has a severe case of homophobia woven into too many of its institutions. I couldn't imagine officials letting this kind of positive outreach fly under the radar without blowback.

After learning last week the state had agreed to spend tax money on the campaign - and spurred by a post on The Palmetto Scoop blog - the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism said Thursday it would not pay the tour operator.

Parks, Recreation and Tourism director Chad Prosser said an agency advertising manager signed off on the contract, proposed by the agency's London advertising contractor.

The rest of the article puts the issue into focus -- it was an overseas contractor who came up with the piece (and who apparently doesn't know the depth of homophobia in SC's government); this marketing person actually put out a press release in the name of the state's tourism agency -- "we think people may be surprised to see our destination reaching out to the gay market."

The folks back in SC were surprised all right, and the reaction was swift, predictable and elicited over-the-top panic that the state might be perceived as welcoming of gay tourists.

The agency is reviewing how, if at all, to discipline the employees who signed off on the program.

Some lawmakers were shocked to learn about the campaign, with state Sen. David Thomas, R-Greenville, calling for an audit.

Joel Sawyer, spokesman for Gov. Mark Sanford, said using tax money to support a social or political agenda is inappropriate. "Our state tourism dollars should be talking about the beaches and attractions of South Carolina," Sawyer said.

Good
It is deceptive and fraudulent for South Carolina to advertise itself as gay friendly - especially unfair to foreign tourists who may not know better and actually BELIEVE the false advertising.

Much better they visit Provencetown for everyone's sake.

Just imagine if GLBTs started spending their travel dollars and holding their conventions in gay-friendly states and stopped supporting the economies of states which persecute them.

And I'm sure the people in SC don't mind our money.
As long as they can take it on the down low.

And yes, I agree .. let people decide for themselves
whether our money or their homophobia is more important to them.

well....

You have to admit, it's an excellent nature reserve for the Closeted Gay Republican.  Considering that the species might dwindle to near extinction in a generation or two, it's important to study it in its original habitat and let the kids see a few before they all get trapped and placed in a captive breeding program....

Your state has legislators, my state has professional homophobes
To be fair, the three cities they list are probably the most likely to be gay friendly in the state. Which may not be saying much...

Now the state's reaction, that's shameful. When I lived in NY, I would occasionally see some interesting news item and think 'Wow, I'm glad I live in this state, it's a pretty cool place to be'. That hasn't happened at all since I've lived in SC. More often, I see a news item like this and think 'Oh, god, this is embarrassing.' There is so much bigotry in this state, it's unreal.

Isn't Mark Sanford the same governor who likes to put pigs in his pockets?
Isn't Mark Sanford the same governor who took two baby pigs into the State House where they proceeded to defecate all over him and the floors.

Kinda gives you an idea of his definition of values.

Yes he is! In addition...
He had forgotten his voter registration card on the day of the 2006 elections when he tried to vote in his home district. Therefore, he was delayed in voting for himself (obviously) and had to drive back to Columbia in order to get a new voter registration card. Only saving grace is that he opposes the introduction of the Christian-oriented license plates., quoted as saying "the largest proclamation of one's faith ought to be in how one lives his life."

Placing targeted tourism ads...
...is "supporting a social or political agenda"?  What filthy ignorant bigoted fools.  Pathetic.

I don't know if Georgia (outside of Atlanta) is a significantly less toxic environment, but I remember Savannah being really beautiful for southern seaport charm.  A possible alternative to SC.

Yew
shur have a purty mouth.

Wasn't that
Georgia, not SC? ;)

"It goes on one at a time, it starts when you care to act, it starts when you do it again after they said no, it starts when you say We and know who you mean, and each day you mean one more."

SC
Deceptive advertising to say that SC is a friendly, progressive place for anyone.  It's especially fraudulent to advertise it as such to the gay community in the UK, where they probably don't know better.  tiponeill is exactly right.  That official with the SC travel board who signed off on the ad should be fired - on that I agree with the fundie nuts who run SC.

"Virginia is for Lovers" Remember that?
I don't recall there being any qualification to the statement when VA ran this campaign...

Perhaps it shoud have read -

"Virginia is for married Christian Heterosexual lovers of opposite sexes over age 21, who only 'idiom' for the purposes of procreation (preferably whites who were both born in the USA)"?

Question:  What does an atheist do when they fall to the floor and start "speaking in tongues"?

Answer: Get a CAT scan.

Whadda ya want
a bumpersticker that goes around all 4 sides of the vehicle??? ;)

Besides, you forgot to add "registered, generously donating and actively voting Republicans"...

"It goes on one at a time, it starts when you care to act, it starts when you do it again after they said no, it starts when you say We and know who you mean, and each day you mean one more."

Fun
It's a nice ad..  It would be fun if someone would buy some billboard space and put it up all around SC.  Those ol' boys would just love that!!

Did this guy read the ad?
OK, here is the comment from the governors office.   Joel Sawyer, spokesman for Gov. Mark Sanford, said using tax money to support a social or political agenda is inappropriate. "Our state tourism dollars should be talking about the beaches and attractions of South Carolina," Sawyer said.

I actually read the ad.  It does mention the beaches and attractions of South Carolina.  But I looked and looked and couldn't find anything about a social and political agenda.  Who will bet me $100 that this guy is totally cool with the "I believe" license plates?

Somehow we need to dispel the contant lie these people spew that if it has to do with gay people, it automatically has an "destructive agenda", is "about sex", or is "promoting a dangerous, anti-family" lifestyle".

I have a cousin who is was an 8 year old boy in Berlin during Kristalnacht.  He saw his father's watch shop destroyed.  Fortunately they were able to get out of Germany shortly after that.  The Nazi's were able to pull it off because of years of making statements attaching Jews to similar types of things so many times that the majority believed it.

South Carolina? maybe next will be Jamaica.

If I make sense? it was quite by accident.

or Topika Kansas.

Come to SC!
Don't worry if someone kills you they will only serve a year in prison.

On the other hand though, maybe it will work like immersion learning for languages. If SC is inundated with LGBT tourists from around the globe it may break down the right-wing rhetoric, and will help to promote equality.
