The Christian Civic League of Maine's Mike Hein calls Pam's House Blend:
"a leading source of radical homosexual propaganda, anti-Christian bigotry, and radical transgender advocacy."

He is "praying that Pam Spaulding will "turn away from her wicked and sinful promotion of homosexual behavior." (CCLM's web site, 10/15/07)

Ex-gay "Christian" activist James Hartline on Pam:
"I have been mocked over and over again by ungodly and unprincipled anti-christian lesbians."
(from "Six Years In Sodom: From The Journal Of James Hartline," 9/4/2006, written from the "homosexual stronghold" of Hillcrest in San Diego).

"Pam is a 'twisted lesbian sister' and an 'embittered lesbian' of the 'self-imposed gutteral experiences of the gay ghetto.'" -- 9/5/2008

Peter LaBarbera of Americans for Truth Against Homosexuality heartily endorses the Blend, calling Pam:

A "vicious anti-Christian lesbian activist."
(Concerned Women for America's radio show [9:15], 1/25/07)

"A nutty lesbian blogger."
(MassResistance radio show [16:25], 2/3/07)

Pam's House Blend always seems to find these sick f*cks. The area of the country she is in? The home state of her wife? I know, they are everywhere. Pam just does such a great job of bringing them out into the light.

Michael Savage of "Savage Nation": Autism Is A Fraud, A Racket.

by: Louise

Sun Jul 20, 2008 at 15:54:36 PM EDT

( - promoted by Pam Spaulding)

(Update: Here is a link to an online petition to fire Mike Savage.)

I usually shoot for funny or sarcastic with the majority of my posts. But this one is far too personal; can't get to the silly place today. Why?

Well, in short, Mike Savage thinks our daughter is a brat.

(BTW, I've tried to reload the Media Matters embedded soundtrack and have gotten it work about 20% of the time- if you click on "our daughter is a brat" link, you can play the actual recording.

And for the record, while my daughter does love to tease, especially her older sister as younger siblings are all wont to do, she is NOT a brat! Just a really terrific kid with autism.)

Oh yeah- and minority children faked their asthma, too.

"[W]hy was there an asthma epidemic amongst minority children? Because I'll tell you why: The children got extra welfare if they were disabled, and they got extra help in school. It was a money racket. Everyone went in and was told [fake cough], 'When the nurse looks at you, you go [fake cough], "I don't know, the dust got me." ' See, everyone had asthma from the minority community."

Regarding autism, estimated to affect 1 out of 150 children born in America, Savage continues:

On his nationally syndicated radio show, Michael Savage claimed that autism is "[a] fraud, a racket. ... I'll tell you what autism is. In 99 percent of the cases, it's a brat who hasn't been told to cut the act out.
That's what autism is.

What do you mean they scream and they're silent? They don't have a father around to tell them, 'Don't act like a moron. You'll get nowhere in life. Stop acting like a putz. Straighten up. Act like a man. Don't sit there crying and screaming, idiot.' "

Savage concluded, "[I]f I behaved like a fool, my father called me a fool. And he said to me, 'Don't behave like a fool.' The worst thing he said -- 'Don't behave like a fool. Don't be anybody's dummy. Don't sound like an idiot. Don't act like a girl. Don't cry.' That's what I was raised with.

That's what you should raise your children with. Stop with the sensitivity training. You're turning your son into a girl, and you're turning your nation into a nation of losers and beaten men. That's why we have the politicians we have."

WOW- have a personal issue or three, Mike?

Autism and asthma caused Larry Craig, David Vitter, and John McCain? WTF???

Louise :: Michael Savage of "Savage Nation": Autism Is A Fraud, A Racket.
As you might imagine, this little burst of sheer ignorance has caused a bit of outrage among parents and others.

Via Wall Street Journal, this statement:

The National Autism Association (NAA) today joins thousands of parents around the country in demanding an apology and retraction from radio talk show host Mike Savage for his July 16 broadcast in which he stated that children affected by autism are "brats," and that bad parenting is to blame for a "fraudulent" epidemic now affecting one in 150 children.

"Autism is a very serious condition that greatly impacts the lives of those affected," said NAA board member Lori McIlwain. "Many children with autism experience tremendous physical pain from underlying pathologies, which accounts for the screaming this person callously dismisses. To have an uneducated opinion about autism is perfectly within one's right, but to earn a living by shock-value exploitation of children's suffering, while suggesting they should be called 'idiots,' is disgraceful."

While the symptoms of autism often include unusual or negative behaviors, there are serious underlying medical issues that cause these symptoms. "To suggest that these kids and their parents are to blame for autism is just plain ignorant," said NAA vice president Ann Brasher, who has a grandson diagnosed with autism. "The devastating emotional toll autism takes on families is unfathomable to those like Mr. Savage who haven't lived with it. He owes an apology to children and their parents for trivializing their pain."

NAA has also requested time on The Savage Garden to educate his audience about autism.

To lodge a complaint against Mike Savage, here's how:

-----------------------------------------------

Where to start with this...

1. First, I wish I had the ability to make sure this person never was on the air again. Far too many people listen to ill-informed opinions like this and believe the garbage they hear to be true and factually based.

2. Second, I wish enough people who listen to his deranged rantings would finally see him for what he, Rush and others really are and denounce this sort of vicious attack upon other human beings.

3. Third, I wish enough research was being funded to find out not only what causes autism, but also enough funding was available so that those families with an autistic member could get all of the therapies and support they need for the entire lifetime of the autistic person.

4. Fourth, I wish that a better health care system were in place for this country, to help offset the incredible costs involved with autism.

-----------------------------------------------

As I've mentioned from time to time, Charlie and I have 2 daughters: Mary (our newly minted teenager) and Jean. Jean is 10 and delightfully funny, caring, sweet- and autistic.

When she was almost 3, she was diagnosed as having "autism or PPD/NOS". And frankly, I went into shock and denial, as we had no family history whatsoever.

At that point in her life, Jean was nonverbal. Instead, she made horrible keening sounds and grunts. She would become horribly frustrated, as she didn't know what communication was, let alone how to perform it. She would hit herself or others out of frustration, bash her head into walls, and throw everything within arm reach.

She was terrified of loud noises (especially motorcycles and trucks), dogs, and a gazillion sensory distractions, as well as horribly shy and claustrophobic. Going into a store was painful for her, as well as riding in a car for more than 5 miles.

She didn't say "Dad" until she was 4. And when she did, we all cried. I will never forget that moment as long as I live.

She was not completely toilet-trained until this past year, at age 9. She was a third grader with extra pull-ups in her backpack.

Upon diagnosis, Jean was enrolled in a very busy schedule of speech, applied behavioral, physical and occupational therapies. She attended an amazing pre-school with a one-on-one therapist trained in helping special needs children.

She repeated kindergarten and has had a one-on-one teacher within our local school system for years, with continued focus on those same therapies, as well as mainstream education goals. She spends 20% of her time with her homeroom class, having the same phys ed, art, music, library and recess times they do. She is one of 17 kids in the Spec Ed classes within a school that promotes fairness and acceptance for all.

This spring, she was able to perform in the school concert- her classmates helped her with her stage fright and to remember what to do. What beautiful people this community has within it.

The differences in Jean now are amazing. She can talk and communicate quite clearly, is learning how to read, write and do simple math, and has a bright future. She just completed her first set of swim lessons, having previously been terrifed of pools. Swimming at the local beach is now her favorite thing.

She has competed in a variety of local Special Olympic events and is especially good at the 200m dash. Last year, she came in dead last- this year, she beat 2 of those same classmates and came in second.

Our kid ROCKS!!

Last summer, she got frustrated with herself and asked me, "Mom, what's wrong with Jean??" I thought about it and said, "Honey, you have something called autism. It doesn't mean that you're not smart or that you can't do something- but it does mean that like Mom needs her glasses to see, sometimes you need help to learn how to do stuff. And it's okay to ask for help when you need it." She thought about that, said "oh- okay" and has been fine ever since.

Best advice EVER regarding frustration came from one of her favorite shows, Blue's Clues. On her bedroom door, there is a sign which reads:

"Are You Frustrated?"

1. Stop
2. Take A Deep Breath
3. Think
4. Start Over

This has become our family mantra in many ways, and probably a good part of the reason why we are not in the "80% divorce rate for autistic families" that has been mentioned again and again. Jean's autism is a fact of our lives and a challenge, but it also has not destroyed our family. Is every day easy? Gah, NO. Some days, Charlie and I get so upset and frustrated ourselves, as we try to balance having one autistic child and one not.

But we are both here, involved, and happy with our family and each other. No matter what the Mike Savages of the world and others of his ilk may think of our child's "brattiness" or of our parenting choices.

Including Charlie's sister, who has never met our children (lives thankfully thousands of miles away), but recently wrote that "you and Louise are the only people responsible for that (Jean's autism), the consequences of your actions and denials that have made your daughter the person she is today. I DO NOT wish that upon any parent." Gotta love the ultra-conservative rich, huh?

unbelievable
The depth of ignorance and cruelty is a new low here! I work with children with autism and Asperger Syndrome in an elementary school. They and their families face many challenges... and now here's another: a jerk with a public audience.
You can be sure I'll be writing. Thanks for letting us know.

Michael Savage is nuts
Michael Savage reaches the point where no one is surprised by the lunacy that comes out of his mouth.

Autism Groups Plan Protest Of Savage In NYC
Conservative Radio Jock Ignites Firestorm After Calling Autistic Children 'Brats,' 'Morons' On Syndicated Show
Monday Rally Planned At WOR Studios In Manhattan
By JEFF CAPELLINI & LEE KUSHNIR, WCBSTV.com
NEW YORK (CBS) ? Conservative radio host Michael Savage will have his hands full on Monday.

In response to his controversial comments about children with autism, Autism United and angry parents will hold a major protest outside WOR Radio studios in Manhattan on Monday afternoon, CBS 2 HD has learned.

They will be calling for the firing of the radio jock and asking for a boycott by parents of children with autism of all stations carrying his signal. Savage outraged the autism community recently by saying 99 percent of children suffering with autism are "brats" and "morons" on his national syndicated radio show.

During the July 16 edition of his show, Savage claimed that autism is "[a] fraud, a racket.

Media Matters: Tack Action
Savage Nation Report (audio file)

Robbie Schwartzman is a 15-year-old from our area with autism. His father, Martin Schwartzman, says Savage's attack on autism is both irresponsible and despicable.

"I couldn't understand why someone could be so heartless and so insensitive, and also so ignorant for a national talk show host," Martin Schwartzman said.

CBS 2 HD News reached out to Savage's producer, but no one returned our calls or e-mails.

Martin Schwartzman, like many other parents with autistic children, is now calling on radio stations across the country to pull Savage from the air waves.

"It was so hurtful to all individuals with disabilities, particularly those with autism, but I really think he should be removed from the air," Martin Schwartzman said.

Media Matters for America on Sunday condemned Savage for his comments.

"What Michael Savage said was foolish, mean-spirited, and hurtful," said J. Jioni Palmer, spokesman for Media Matters. "It's unfortunate he would use his radio program to make fun of and belittle these kids. Instead of ridicule and cheap shots, the children suffering from autism and asthma and their families need support and compassion."

Talk Radio Network, which syndicates The Savage Nation, claims that Savage is heard on more than 350 radio stations. The Savage Nation reaches at least 8.25 million listeners each week, according to Talkers Magazine, making it one of the most listened-to talk radio shows in the nation, behind only The Rush Limbaugh Show and The Sean Hannity Show.

Over 2 million children and adults have autism. One out of every 150 children is diagnosed with autism today.

Please stay with CBS 2 HD and wcbstv.com for more on this developing story.

Thanks
for info...

Has anyone seen mention of this story in MSM at all?? So far, I haven't and it says more to me about money (Savage's show is #3 in the nation) and the clout assholes like Savage and Imus have over any sort of decency or credibility.

(head slap) Duh! Why on Earth would we Americans want any sort of accountability within our media sources??? I keep forgetting that part... ;)

The New York Times just posted an article
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07...

Savage isn't backing down from his position, and is devoting his entire show today to the issue.

If you want allies, you have to be an ally.

[ Parent ]
My sister has just started the same kind of training
And will be working full-time this year as an aide to an autistic child being mainstreamed into the elementary school. I can't imagine how tough it is for the parents of these kids, given her stories of how difficult it is to manage some, but certainly not all, of them. The strain and stress must be incredible - and they certainly don't need this idiot making things tougher.

The really ironic thing that hit me when I read Savage's moronic comments was the story of Angie Dickinson of Police Woman fame. She is credited by a lot in Hollywood as one of the best and devoted mothers - her daughter had Asperger's and Dickinson devoted an enormous amount of time and energy ensuring she had the best education, etc. (which was tough in the 70s). Her daughter, who IIRC died recently, went on to become a geologist and relatively successful adult with a difficult condition.

Dr Temple Grandin's writing
gave me so much insight and hope in Jean's early days:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T...

She herself is autistic and an amazing person.

During one of Jean's early IEP meetings (parents + all teachers/ therapists sit-down to go over concerns and yearly goals), I said that our wishes for Jean (who was non-verbal at the time) were fairly simple- it didn't matter if she never learns the names of state capitals or things like that.

The supervising teacher (and one of my dearest friends in the school system, all these years later) stopped me and said, "Louise, don't count her out YET- she may surprise you" and I took her words to heart.

This past year's progress has been like a switch went on inside of Jean; her growth has been off the scale in so many areas. When Jean graduated from elementary (4th grade is middle school here), the supervising teacher and I both cried, we were so proud of Jean and the hard work she's done her 5 years there.

And if all goes well, I will be able to continue helping the teacher with her remaining younger students, as the kids just GET to you- she asked me to volunteer and I was honored by that.

Yeah, it's hard. But what emotional rewards you get, sometimes in little moments when the kiddos connect and you see the jumps in their understanding of their world. Good luck to your sister! :)

It's interesting that Mike Savage's real name is...
Michael Alan Weiner (the last name fits him to a T)!!!

I'd wish that his "show" (and I use that term loosely) was canned due to a lack of advertising support, since that would be the only way for him to STFU once and for all!!!

BTW Louise...
Thank you very much for sharing this! While I can't imaging what it's like for a family to deal with Autism, I would at the very least take the time to listen and try to come away knowing more about it and how it affects a family.

[ Parent ]
That's a Very Good Idea.
Hit the Savage Radio Show where it hurts...with his advertisers. Does anyone know what companies pay for advertising on his show? Go after them and take away the funding for his show. I'm sure that most companies don't want to be identified with someone who belittles children like this. Thanks Louise for sharing this with us.

[ Parent ]
I'm glad to hear your child is improving
and absolutely appalled at both Savage and your in-laws. I wish it was just him.

Louise, I'm glad you posted this.
I was thinking about how infuriated you would be over his comments.

These are the mouth pieces of the Republican Party,
Anyone remember Michael J Fox and the treatment he recieved from the A$$ Holes like Savage, Limbaugh and Hannity?

If I make sense? it was quite by accident.

Yes I do- it was disgraceful!
One has to wonder if in this current hate-filled enviroment whether FDR or JFK would have stood a snowball's chance in hell of election, considering their health issues.

I'm gonna guess not...

But surely you know
that because he's an actor - and a pretty good one - no one can tell if Michael J. Fox is faking it or not.  I'm sure it's just to get attention.  Unlike Limbaugh, et.al. who genuinely care.  [snark off]

[ Parent ]
Imbecile!
Minority children developed asthma because of old mouldy buildings with all kinds of irritants in the air from their decay, including asbestos.

When my family cut me off for a while in my youth, I lived in such places. I saw. I rember. And I bear witness....

I tell you Chica that no greater abomination exists than women denying their spirit of sisterhood and instead becoming the oppressor. -Rebeca, Universidad Complutense de Madrid

But also...
Asthma rates are high among middle and upper income families as well as clean up-to-code homes - which I've seen attributed to overative immune systems (since both environmental and internal tendencies can influence athsma appearance and symptoms, and asthma is related to seasonal allergies and eczema).

My guess is multiple causal factors, with a partial reliance on inherited sensitivity (either hormonal or genetic).

More on point: Louise, I appreciated your sharing of your daughter's story, and I'm glad she's doing so well. I keep thinking, how "bottom of the barrel" is Weiner scraping for show topics if he's picking on children?

[ Parent ]
Needed to hear good news...
...Louise, you made my day.  Glad to hear your daughter is doing much better.

Too bad your SIL has issues — there are a lot more of us who are happy.

Thanks!...

Have missed gabbing
with you, Mike- contact me via Pam for RL email! :)

The SIL has so many issues; I pity her more than anything else, really. She's a spoiled 60 year old teenager who married a very rich man when she was barely 20- her sole purpose in life was as breeding stock. Most of my in-laws are radically messed up people; that's why the kids only know their somewhat sane maternal relatives! ;)

Go After the show sponsors
The sponsors determine if he will stay on the air.  Write all the sponsors telling them what happened and why you think they should pull their advertising from his show.  This can be very effective, very fast.

Pam,
J'aime ma Peau

Do you happen to know who advertises?
Any company who would advertise with Savage deserves to hear an earful.  But who are they?

If you want allies, you have to be an ally.

[ Parent ]
Local
We would need to contact local advertisers on the stations that run his show. That means that anybody who wants to contact his advertisers is going to have to listen to his show one day to see who they are.

It might be more effective to get a list of the stations that run his show, and boycott those stations. A well-publicized boycott would hurt their ad sales enough to get them to dump his show. Also, FCC complaints would be a good start.

BTW, anybody besides me thinking about how the hate crimes legislation that got stuck in the quagmire that was last couple of Congressional session also would have added "disabilities"? It would not have stopped a right wing shock jock from shooting off his mouth, but it might have helped mitigate the damage that may come from it.

Would Not Know
I do not listen or watch his show, I do not know if it is radio or tv.  I can say the same about the drug addict in Florida. This morning I finally stopped watching CNN because the morning show glorification of the Oklahoma county commissioner and his gay hate "comic book".
I am not sure what brain is behind CNN morphing into a FN lite organization, but who or what is behind it should get out of the dark booth and learn about the U.S. as a country.

Might be more effective to go local
Those are the big guys, who advertise on any or all TRN shows. Boycotting companies who advertise on Savage's show would be more effective if it targets smaller businesses that can't afford to LOSE rather than GAIN revenue on small stations that can't afford to lose the advertising revenue. If they lose enough markets because the smaller stations dump the show.

Simultaneously, boycotting STATIONS that run the show is also effective for the same reason, but it will take the extra effort of getting out press releases so that companies who advertise on those stations during other shows start to either demand the show is dropped or pull their advertising as well.

For those of you who (like me) have no clue what station airs Savage in your area, Media Matters has a tool you can just plug your zip code into.
http://mediamatters.org/action...

Their website says to call the stations. Good idea, but also sending letters and e-mail (which can be cc'd to advertisers will help document the effort).

Michael Savage didn't learn his daddy's lesson
Vilifying people's children is a very, very foolish thing to do when you rely on the public for your income.  Not for the first time, he comes across as an idiot and a fool, as well as a misogynist.

Personally, I think he fits the diagnostic criteria for psyopathic personality disorder: http://www.mcafee.cc/Bin/sb.html

Research on autism and asthma has identifed a number of factors implicated in both conditions.  This information is readily available on the internet, there is no excuse for the incompetence and cruelty Savage has shown.

I am reminded...
...of the movie, "The Omega Man," that 1970's futuristic dreck starring Charlton "My cold, dead hands!" Heston: Most of the world is dead from a biological weapon accident(?)... attack(?) and some of the survivors -- known as "The Family -- are led by Matthias who has a vendetta against technology, etc.

"Matthias" was a network news anchor.

Go figure.

Jon/"GraciesDaddy"

"Nappy Headed Bigot"?
How is it that Imus' comment - which was clearly just a throw away line with little or no forethought - could result in his firing, but this does not?

Our planet already experienced what can happen with unfettered public hate speech...

I refer you to the man who truly started the trend Mr. Savage, and his kind continue today...

f children with autism, along with politicians and other protesters, convened Sunday in front of a San Francisco radio station and renewed calls for the firing of talk show host Michael Savage, who recently suggested that most autism diagnoses were fraudulent.
A crowd of 50 to 60 people gathered in front of KNEW radio's Townsend Street offices Sunday to protest the decision by KNEW and Talk Radio Network, the company that syndicates Savage's shows, to keep him on the air despite his controversial statements.
"Michael Savage's remarks were hurtful to the safety and the well-being of vulnerable children and we want him off the air," said Evelyn Ain, president of Autism United in Long Island, whose 8-year-old son has autism. "If this (KNEW) and other radio stations don't stop carrying Savage's signal, then we will pursue every advertiser until they drop him."
