Blend-o-licious endorsements...

The Christian Civic League of Maine's Mike Hein calls Pam's House Blend:
"a leading source of radical homosexual propaganda, anti-Christian bigotry, and radical transgender advocacy."

He is "praying that Pam Spaulding will "turn away from her wicked and sinful promotion of homosexual behavior." (CCLM's web site, 10/15/07)

Ex-gay "Christian" activist James Hartline on Pam:
"I have been mocked over and over again by ungodly and unprincipled anti-christian lesbians."
(from "Six Years In Sodom: From The Journal Of James Hartline," 9/4/2006, written from the "homosexual stronghold" of Hillcrest in San Diego).

"Pam is a 'twisted lesbian sister' and an 'embittered lesbian' of the 'self-imposed gutteral experiences of the gay ghetto.'" -- 9/5/2008

Peter LaBarbera of Americans for Truth Against Homosexuality heartily endorses the Blend, calling Pam:

A "vicious anti-Christian lesbian activist."
(Concerned Women for America's radio show [9:15], 1/25/07)

"A nutty lesbian blogger."
(MassResistance radio show [16:25], 2/3/07)

Pam's House Blend always seems to find these sick f*cks. The area of the country she is in? The home state of her wife? I know, they are everywhere. Pam just does such a great job of bringing them out into the light.

Citigroup VP's popular homophobic, misogynistic blog earns him speaking gig -- and pink slip

by: Pam Spaulding

Mon Aug 11, 2008 at 06:00:00 AM EDT

It's not surprising to hear that Wall Street is still rife with type A, arrogant, sexist pricks who engage in frat boy behavior. Michael J. McCarthy made a name for himself -- as "Large," the proprietor of an execreble blog called Take A Report. His cover was blown and when his employer got wind of the content his *ss was grass.
"This employee was terminated for behavior that violated the firm's code of conduct and policies," Citigroup spokeswoman Danielle Romero-Apsilos said.

McCarthy, a vice president, declined to comment on his departure from the New York-based bank. Financial industry regulatory records show he's been at Citigroup for seven years, most recently trading shares of utility and power companies.

...The Website, created in April 2007, consists of commentary about homosexuals, excretory functions, concert reviews and college football picks.

How about this commentary?

And what's below the fold is just, well, let's say "juvenile" is probably too big a compliment.

Pity the women in this man's life.
This picture must've been taken at some sort of exchange program for ugly people... Maybe it's one of those charitable workshops that gives women like "Thickness" on the far right a chance to see what life is like for people who exercise and actually give a shit about how they look.

Now I know people are going to fixate on the blond wearing the all-black dress in the near left corner, but I want to make sure you appreciate the optical illusion that is occurring right next to her... That seemingly Puerto Rican chick next to Blondie has her leg up on the table. But if you look real quick, it looks like that raised leg belongs to the sista' standing next to Thickness. So the illusion is that it appears as though the black chick is "cooling off the cooch" over that bucket of ice... Didn't that just blow your mind?

There's plenty more where that came from, including a hi-lar-i-ous P'shop of the Michelin man inserted into the above pic to represent the zaftig woman on the right. Has McCarthy been shunned for being "outed" as blogger Large? Not in the least -- he is slated to deliver the keynote speech at the Dallas Security Traders Association's convention next month.
"He seems to be an extremely well-known person across the trading community and we thought it would be an interesting change of pace from what we've done in the past,'' said Alan Marshall, chairman of the Dallas Security Traders conference, which expects about 300 to 400 people to attend the event. ``It seemed like this would be a good opportunity for people to try to laugh a little bit.
So does the Dallas Security Traders Association endorse the views expressed by Mr. McCarthy? Is it all in good fun?

While McCarthy's blog is pretty rank, Citigroup cited "behavior that violated the firm's code of conduct and policies," even though he never blogged about his employer, mentioned Citigroup or identified himself. You can be fired for blogging about your job,  using your work computer or its network for personal matters, on your lunch hour -- and even for blogging at home in many states, unless there is explicit permission to do so. Case law has usually sided with the employer.

According to the 2006 Workplace E-Mail, Instant Messaging & Blog Survey by the American Management Association and the ePolicy Institute, 26 percent of employers have fired employees for misuse of e-mail. Another 2 percent have terminated workers for inappropriate instant messaging chat; while yet a further 2 percent have dismissed employees for offensive blogging content, including content posted on employees' personal home computers.
Of course, many organizations haven't updated their HR employee handbooks to establish specific guidelines for all sorts of technology uses -- including email, portable electronic devices, etc. Some may not be as restrictive in terms of banning all personal use of company technology, but Citigroup, as a financial institution, surely has a comprehensive, wide-ranging policy on such things -- and that's why it was able to sh*tcan "Large." Heck, Citigroup probably monitors its employees' communications.
A survey of more than 700 companies by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) found that almost three-quarters of those companies monitor their workers' use of the Internet and check employee email, and more than half review employee phone calls. According to a study by the American Management Association, businesses offering financial services -- such as banks, brokerage houses, insurance firms, and real estate companies -- are most likely to monitor their workers' communications.
Hat tip, David.

Read some of this funny as hell blog!
Some of the terminology was downright hilarious! "Sista"; "Aunt Jemima"; AIDS humor right out of the '80s. No wonder he's in demand in 2008. Just bright, witty and absolutely timely. I understand the brainiac is a portly gentleman himself. I'll refrain from bear belly jokes and small cock commentary because the poor asshole has suffered enough. It's a bitch to be fired.

The labor market must be tighter than I thought...
if they're hiring 14 year olds as vice presidents of major corporations. Emotionally stunted 14 year olds at that. Imagine working for this guy?

I suppose that's what his employer imagined - the people working for him and what could happen if he brought these attitudes into the work place.

Aw sugar
Looks like I'm in a minority again.

What he does a home should stay at home. As long as he doesn't bring his assine, accent on the ass, behaviour into work, and affect his ability to do the job, so what?

Ok, it means that others may be uncomfortable around him, but that's not his problem.

This is a Bad Precedent, and as long as he's not a Bad Vice President, it should be condemned.

What's next - firing someone for contributing to BDSM blogs? Or GLB ones? Because "it doesn't fit the company image"?

I can't help but think that if he'd been fired for running an equally puerile site called "gay boys in bondage", full of Monty Python references and toilet humour, but gay-friendly rather than misogynist and bigoted, he'd be seen by some here as a martyr, rather than an idiot who got his comeuppance.

I'm right wing - but sometimes it seems that it's only people like me who really believe in "tolerance" and "diversity". It means not persecuting those like this ... person... whose views you find highly offensive, as long as they do no harm to others. It means judging employees on the quality of their work, and nothing else.

Isn't that what we're supposed to be asking for?

There is no situation so complex it can't get even worse

If he was doing this for pay, then Citibank had no choice but to fire him
I am assuming that, since he will be speaking to a Security Traders conference, that he himself had at least one of the securities licenses. As such, it is a gross violation of federal and state securities regulation to be engaged in ANY activity for which you receive remuneration, unless you have the PRIOR, express permission of the firm which is responsible for providing your regulatory oversight. I find it exceedingly difficult to imagine that he had gotten permission from his bosses at Citibank to run such a blog. If he were receiving any kind of remuneration from his work -- it was a paid gig, he solicited donations through PayPal, he was receiving blogging services free for his work while others paid for the same access -- then Citibank was obligated to fire him lest they come under the scrutiny of industry regulators.

The reason for this is simple: securities traders with a financial interest in Business A have a strong incentive to manipulate the market in such a way as to benefit Business A either directly ("Business A is a very good investment right now; can I put you down for a purchase of 100 shares?") or indirectly ("Blogging is the news service of the future, you should get in now while prices are low.") Even if the specific case borders on the absurd, the rules have very little lee-way.

Either Citibank knew in advance and gave permission for his outside activities, or they did not. If they knew, then Citibank faces a huge customer relations nightmare. If they did not, then McCarthy was in direct violation of federal and state securities regulation and was a danger to the company. The latter case would fit in very well with the cause of his termination.

Plus ça change, plus c'est la même merde.

What he wrote was deeply offensive.
There is not question in my mind that this guy's writing was racist, misogynistic, as well as homophobic.

OTH, I'm with ZoeB on this one - IF he did this on his own time, with his own computer, and given that he was not personally identifying these attitudes and prejudices to his employer, THEN I strongly disagree with a private corporation firing someone for this sort of personal expression.

I truly support a solid, broad interpretation of freedom of speech - even that which is deeply offensive such as this. Employers should not be in the business of policing speech if that speech is made in the way that I described above.

In the past I was one who wanted this sort of thing stopped. However, I'm learning I don't have a right NOT to be offended if I truly support freedom of speech. (What's great about freedom of speech is that we can then confront a person like this in very direct and clear ways.)

[ Parent ]
I'd have to agree with you ZoeB - unless there's something in the company
handbook - or something that would have run them afoul of securities regulations (neither of which is reported here) then I see this as a Free Speech issue.  Like Phelps, I may not (ever) agree with his opinions, but he's got just as much right to speak (type) them as the next person.

If Citibank fired him because they didn't like the content, then who's next?

[ Parent ]
Go to work, do your job.
At home it is your time.   If there is any proof that this guy pulled any of these stunts while representing the company than he is rightfully fired.

That said, my political views are known where I work.  I have had other employess try to convince me to vote for McCain, I in return exchange in conversation with them the reasons I will vote for Obama.  But no discussing them with customers.  Even though there are many that want to.

I am at work to represent the company I work for and their products and services.  That is all.  Now don't get me wrong, I have wanted to unload on some of the customers I get when they are talking among themselves, and have even made comments to me.  Recently I had a couple from SC that made racist comments about my fellow employees asking me how could I work beside them, and she heard the comments.  I just didn't respond.  But I did mention to my fellow employee that I don't feel the same way as my customer.  She thanked me and then told me a few things she has been called.

Again, if this bone head did anything using the company and sharing his views with customers that are against company policy, he deserves to be fired.

If I make sense? it was quite by accident.

Mr. Large? are we compensating Mikey?
This douchey AIDS-phobe calls himself Mr. Large, here's the deal Mikey, you were a Vice President of Citigroup, women would give it up just for that, no matter how old, ugly, or limp you are. Now you better be able to back up you LARGE claim, cuz your career is extremely flacid at the moment. Since this is VERY high profile firing, how you trashed women and gays...ain't nobody going to be beating a path to your door.

he was doing it from work, per the article
The article on his firing says he was accessing his blog while at his Citigroup job.

If he had been doing it at home on his own time for no compensation, I'd say it's nobody else's business, but since he got caught working on the blog during his day job, all I can say is that I hope he enjoys having much more free time for making these lovely contributions to the blogosphere.

Thanks for the clarification
In that case, oh, well, bye-bye.

as I mentioned in the post
Case law allows employers in most states to fire people for blogging on their own time if it has some sort of impact on the business (e.g. bad PR).

The First Amendment doesn't apply to employer-employee relationships. Of course Citigroup probably had a clear policy on use of work computers/network that allowed him to be terminated. Many readers suspect that this escape hatch made it easy to get rid of "Large" without discussing the content "issue". He's unlikely the only one at Citigroup blogging -- even on the job. Large just raised his blogging persona too high for their tastes and the company had the legal wind at its back.

Citigroup had just lost about 15 BILLION
They were encouraging employees to rat each other out, and firing like crazy.

I read one comment about Citigroup and Michael where they said
This definitely wasn't the time to be screwing around like this sh*t.

pretty sure this is Mikey
There was information that his blog sponsores the military, and he was described as a writer, by a Citigroup executive after he was dumped.
