Blend-o-licious endorsements...

The Christian Civic League of Maine's Mike Hein calls Pam's House Blend:
"a leading source of radical homosexual propaganda, anti-Christian bigotry, and radical transgender advocacy."

He is "praying that Pam Spaulding will "turn away from her wicked and sinful promotion of homosexual behavior." (CCLM's web site, 10/15/07)

Ex-gay "Christian" activist James Hartline on Pam:
"I have been mocked over and over again by ungodly and unprincipled anti-christian lesbians."
(from "Six Years In Sodom: From The Journal Of James Hartline," 9/4/2006, written from the "homosexual stronghold" of Hillcrest in San Diego).

"Pam is a 'twisted lesbian sister' and an 'embittered lesbian' of the 'self-imposed gutteral experiences of the gay ghetto.'" -- 9/5/2008

Peter LaBarbera of Americans for Truth Against Homosexuality heartily endorses the Blend, calling Pam:

A "vicious anti-Christian lesbian activist."
(Concerned Women for America's radio show [9:15], 1/25/07)

"A nutty lesbian blogger."
(MassResistance radio show [16:25], 2/3/07)

Pam's House Blend always seems to find these sick f*cks. The area of the country she is in? The home state of her wife? I know, they are everywhere. Pam just does such a great job of bringing them out into the light.

Fri Aug 22, 2008 at 23:30:00 PM EDT

UPDATE (Sat. 9:30 AM): HRC has information out on Biden's record regarding LGBT issues. See it below the fold.

If you were waiting for that text message or email, this is what went out this AM.

TEXT MESSAGE TO SUPPORTERS:

Barack has chosen Senator Joe Biden to be our VP nominee.  Watch the first Obama-Biden rally live at 3pm ET on www.BarackObama.com. Spread the word!

EMAIL TO SUPPORTERS:

Friend --

I have some important news that I want to make official.

I've chosen Joe Biden to be my running mate.

Joe and I will appear for the first time as running mates this afternoon in Springfield, Illinois -- the same place this campaign began more than 19 months ago.

I'm excited about hitting the campaign trail with Joe, but the two of us can't do this alone.  We need your help to keep building this movement for change.

Please let Joe know that you're glad he's part of our team.  Share your personal welcome note and we'll make sure he gets it:

http://my.barackobama.com/welcomejoe

Thanks for your support,

Barack

P.S. -- Make sure to turn on your TV at 2:00 p.m. Central Time to join us or watch online at www.BarackObama.com

Pam Spaulding :: And Obama's running mate is...Joe Biden
From Brad Luna of HRC:
Today, the Human Rights Campaign, the nation's largest gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender civil rights organization, hailed the presumptive Democratic nominee, Senator Barack Obama's selection of Senator Joe Biden as his Vice Presidential running mate.  During his career in Congress, Senator Biden has a proven record of fighting for and supporting issues of fairness and equality.

"In selecting Senator Joe Biden as his running mate, Senator Obama has chosen a proven and effective advocate for fairness and equality that our entire community can be proud of," said Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese.  "Senator Biden's record in the United States Senate is one of support and understanding that has been unwavering throughout his career."

Recently, Senator Biden, as Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, played an instrumental role in securing the passage of the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), legislation which included Senator John Kerry and Senator Gordon Smith's provision repealing the discriminatory HIV travel and immigration ban.  His working across the aisle guaranteed that the Kerry-Smith provision was adopted.  Furthermore, when opponents of the provision attempted to garner support to strip the provision from the bill, Senator Biden fought to keep the provision in the bill and helped secure the votes for PEPFAR'S final passage.

"We only need to look back to the recent passage of the repeal of the HIV travel and immigration ban to see the type of leadership we can expect from Senator Biden on the issues important to our community," continued Solmonese.  "It was because of his determination and tenacity that we were able to see this relic of discrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS torn down."

"If the support Senator Biden has proven on our issues is any indication of the type of Vice President he will be than our community can be assured that Senator Obama has chosen a thoughtful and staunch advocate for equality as his closest adviser," concluded Solmonese.

The Human Rights Campaign is America's largest civil rights organization working to achieve lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality. By inspiring and engaging all Americans, HRC strives to end discrimination against GLBT citizens and realize a nation that achieves fundamental fairness and equality for all.

* Helms Amendment - Hate Crimes Statistics Act (February 8, 1990)
Senator Helms offered an amendment to a hate crimes statistics bill (S. AMDT. 1251 to S. 419) stating that "the homosexual movement threatens the strength and survival of the American family" and that "state sodomy laws should be enforced."  The Helms amendment failed 19-77 (Record Vote No. 12).  HRC opposed this amendment.  Biden also opposed it.

* District of Columbia's Health Care Benefits Expansion Act (July 30, 1992)
Senator Brock Adams (D-WA) offered a procedural motion to block attempts to repeal the District of Columbia's Health Care Benefits Expansion Act, a measure adopted by the D.C. Council to provide D.C. government employees the opportunity to purchase health care coverage for their domestic partners.  The motion failed 41-51 and implementation of the D.C. law was subsequently prohibited by Congress.  HRC supported this motion.  Biden also supported it.

* Justice Clarence Thomas Confirmation (October 15, 1991)
The Senate voted on President George H.W. Bush's nomination of Clarence Thomas to the U.S. Supreme Court.  The Senate confirmed his nomination 52-48 (Record Vote No. 220).  HRC opposed this nomination.  Biden also opposed it.

* Hate Crimes Sentencing Enhancement (November 4, 1993)
Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) offered an amendment to the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1993 (S. AMDT. 1097 to S. 1607) to increase penalties for federal crimes motivated by the victim's sexual orientation and other characteristics.  The Feinstein Amendment was the first piece of federal legislation to provide protection on the basis of sexual orientation.  The amendment passed 95-4 (Record Vote No. 351).  HRC supported this amendment.  Biden also supported it.

* Codification of the Ban on Gays and Lesbians in the Military (September 9, 1993)
Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) offered an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act of 1994 (S. AMDT. 783 to S. 1298) to prevent codification of the discriminatory "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy on lesbians and gays in the military.  The amendment failed 33-63 (Record Vote No. 250).  HRC supported this amendment.  Biden also supported it.

* District of Columbia's Domestic Partners Ordinance (July 27, 1993)
An amendment was offered to allow the District of Columbia to implement its ordinance allowing unmarried couples or partners to register with the D.C. government, making them eligible for group health insurance offered to D.C. government employees for a higher premium.  It failed 43-55 (Record Vote No. 217).  HRC supported this amendment.  Biden also supported it.

* Employment Non-Discrimination Act (September 10, 1996)
In its first test in Congress, the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (S. 932), which would prohibit employment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, came within one vote of passage in the Senate.  Senator David Pryor (D-AR), who supported ENDA, missed the vote for a family emergency.  The bill failed 49-50 (Record Vote No. 281).  HRC supported this bill.  Biden also supported it.

* Hate Crimes Amendment to Defense Authorization (June 20, 2000)
Senators Edward Kennedy (D-MA) and Gordon Smith (R-OR) introduced the Hate Crimes Prevention Act, renamed the Local Law Enforcement Enhancement Act, as an amendment to the fiscal year 2001 defense authorization bill (S. AMDT. 3473 to S. 2549).  The Kennedy-Smith amendment would extend basic hate crime protections to all Americans in all communities by adding real or perceived sexual orientation, gender and disability to the categories covered and by removing the federally protected activity requirement.  This amendment was overwhelmingly approved 57-42 (Record Vote No. 136).  HRC supported this amendment.  Biden also supported it.

* Federal Marriage Amendment (July 14, 2004)
The Federal Marriage Amendment (S.J. Res 40), introduced in the Senate by Senator Wayne Allard (R-CO), would have enshrined discrimination into the U.S. Constitution by defining marriage as the union between one man and one woman and prohibiting federal and state laws from conferring same-sex couples with marital status and "the legal incidents thereof," thereby endangering civil unions and domestic partnership benefits.  The amendment needed a two-thirds majority (67) to be passed in the Senate and a three-fifths majority (60) to proceed to a vote on the amendment (cloture).  The cloture motion failed 48-50 (Record Vote No. 155).  HRC opposed this cloture motion.  Biden also opposed it.

* Federal Marriage Amendment (June 7, 2006)
The Marriage Protection Amendment (formerly called the Federal Marriage Amendment) (S.J. Res. 1) would have enshrined discrimination into the U.S. Constitution by defining marriage as the union between one man and one woman and prohibiting federal and state laws from conferring same-sex couples with marital status and "the legal incidents thereof."  The amendment would thereby endanger civil unions and domestic partnership benefits.  The amendment failed by a vote of 49-48, falling 11 votes short of the 60 necessary to invoke cloture, a procedural motion to advance to a vote on the substance of the bill (Record Vote No. 163).  The amendment would have needed 67 votes (two-thirds majority) to pass.  HRC opposed this amendment.  Biden also opposed it.

* Justice Samuel Alito Confirmation (January 31, 2006)
The Senate voted on President W. Bush's nomination of Judge Samuel Alito to the U.S. Supreme Court.  The Senate confirmed his nomination 58-42 (Record Vote No. 2).  HRC opposed this nomination.  Biden also opposed it.

* Judge William Pryor Confirmation (June 9, 2005)
The Senate voted on President Bush's nomination of Judge William Pryor to the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals.  The Senate confirmed his nomination 53-45 (Record Vote No. 133).  HRC opposed this nomination.  Biden also opposed it.

Remember what FDR said, "I agree with you, I want to do it, now make me do it." Have you written/called a congress-critter today? 8.25, 6.21

[ Parent ]
At this point, I'd say he'll go with Auntie
Anti-climactic, that is.

Without raising someone from the dead his choice of VP cannot possibly be interesing enough to make all this fuss worthwhile.  The big reveal - Joe Biden?  (been around for years) Hillary? (hardly unexpected) whatshisname from Indiana? (whoo-hoo!) or some token from a swing state that we've never heard of - isn't worth all this anticipation.  The media are bored.

We are talking about the VP here, right? Assuming Obama wins we will never hear another thing about this person for four more years.  We've been through this before...it's not interesting enough to make me hold my breath.

I hope it's David Archuletta.  He's dreamy.

Should Obama go with Pelosi's boyfriend Chet from Texas, I will be less ambivalent and much MORE angry.

Progressive
All I've got to say is that it better be someone with a progressive, specifically, pro-gay record, or there's going to be hell to pay with his base supporters; someone like Chet Edwards, for example, that has a dismal gay issue related voting record.

They won't be progressive...
that's supposed to be what Obama "was".
Chet and Sam are deal breakers for me. Otherwise what's another milquetoast on the demo ticket?

Yeppers
The reason being if the Pres. were to die or leave office, the VP would be the new Pres.  Constitutionally, there's no way Arnie could do that.

[ Parent ]
I can't imagine anyone who either
a) was paying attention or b) came from Illinois had any illusions about Obama's center-right nature.  Being left of McCain (or pretty much the vast majority of the Republican Party) is not the same as actually being left of center, reasonably progressive, or possessing a shred of basic humanity or decency.  It just means that McBlech is just so loathsome that yet another conservative Democrat turns out to be more palatable than what the Republicans crap out.

True, Mile High, But . . .
I'd rather vote for Obama (even though he may not be the progressive ideal), than vote for a "going nowhere fast" third-party candidate, or, staying at home and "cursing the dark". . .for the next 4 years (or 40 years if you consider the Supreme Court.

[ Parent ]
Which is where I am.
I wish I could be enthusiastic, but I'm getting really uninspired.  At least I'll be voting--if nothing else, Udall and DeGette are good congresscritter material.

...here from CNN
Obama told reporters on Thursday he had made his choice, and aides used the prospect of a text-message announcement to try and attract additional supporters by soliciting their cell phone numbers and e-mail addresses.

Even that became occasion for intrigue.

Late Friday, several officials said the text message announcement would be distributed Saturday morning, a few hours before a scheduled rally at the Old State Capitol in Springfield, Ill., where the Democratic ticket would appear for the first time.

CNN's Wolf Blitzer let his frustration show
They've been so irate Obama's camp is disciplned and doesn't leak like a sieve, and all day they've been waiting, with ZERO control of when the news comes out.
Finally Blitzer dropped this TURD.

"does this mean Obama's presidency would be secretive?"

No Wolf...
Not secretive, just disciplined, except in those areas that are supposed to be secretive--like CIA operatives.

Did McCain announce his while I wasn't paying attention?
After all, if Obama not telling is being "secretive", what is McCain not telling?  Is that "being Presidential"?  And just what type of donuts does the Republican candidate prefer again?

No. ON Topic.
Margaret Cho for vice president.

Think of the constituencies automatically added to Obama's total:

1. Gay Americans.
2. Asian Americans.
3. Cynical Americans.
4. Ribald Americans.
5. Young, hip Americans.

Sadly, no one in Obama's campaign is anywhere close to imaginative enough to come up with such a certain winner.

[ Parent ]
Could it be?
Maybe he took Michael Moore's advice and chose Caroline Kennedy?  That would be freakin' AWESOME!!!

Biden doesn't fit with Obama's message of no more business as usual in Washington.  Biden's the poster boy of Washington insiders!

I would love Caroline
but with Russia acting out, I think Biden will give Obama voters peace of mind that someone with ample foreign affairs is VP.

Perhaps Caroline wouldn't want a government position, she works for Obama at her kid's wishes.

Biden will also stick Cheney/Bush on McCain's back, and ream McCain for torture flip flop.

Biden will also not be objectionable
to any of the factions of the Democratic Party, he might not have been their first pick, but conservative Democratics and Progressives respect Joe.

just a couple PETTY annoyances
Tagging my posts as a troll, and blaming me cuz I was one of the few here commenting when Biden was revealed, so yeah I had quite a few posts...so what!
It's not like there is a finite number of posts a thread can hold, my posts didn't take away from anyone else being able to voice their opinions.

Biden will help the party
Hey Brother's and Sister's their's plenty of toys in the sand box so lets play nice...

Obama really wnats me to stay home this time
What does Biden bring? Yeah he's smart and not the worst Democratic senator but what does he truly bring? Not a state, not any electoral votes, all he brings is the pasty white guy factor. I stuck with Obama after his FISA capitulation but Biden is too much. I've gone from being excited about Obama to being moderately enthusiastic to indifferent to holding my nose and now he wants me to go vote in full NBC warfare gear. Not even a bone to the progressives who, let's face it, were the ones that put him past Clinton. Nothing. Once again, I find myself in the position of having to talk myself into taking the time and making the effort to go vote in November.

Obama was never really a progressive Margaret
though like the characters in the credit card ad, he played one on TV for awhile.

But...

McCain would mean too many bad things...though honestly I think that bringing back the draft would end the war...

I don't think Obama is JUST progressive
Some issues he is progressive, other issues he's more centrist, and he's even willing to consult with Independents and Republicans like Hagel and Luger. I'll have disagreements on specifics, and possibly on some of the people he chooses for cabinet positions. But choosing Biden, ASSURES Barack will be the guy picking out a CABINET.....HA!

Oh, I know....
...that Obama's no Progressive and I've been saying that since he put his name in the ring. By the time that the primary got to my state, he was the best choice left. But not being a Progressive is all the more reason for him to have chosen one. Let me be clear, I haven't said that I was staying home, I clearly said that it seems like Obama wants me to stay home. Big difference. But I expect nothing less. Kos is getting flamed by his own commentors for criticizing Biden as the VeeP choice. Oh well :)

Biden will make a BIG difference with Labor in Ohio and PA
He will also be reassuring to Security Moms, that there is someone who is a steady hand, and a well known quantity.
I read an article about Biden's wife who charmed the interviewer and his lover (who is also an educator.)
The biggest asset Biden brings, is no inter-Party rift.
I think he will be extremely warmly accepted at the Convention.

Biden is qualified to be president...
...that's what he brings to the ticket.  Sweeping away all of this veep-stakes hype the most important qualification is WHO CAN RUN THE COUNTRY in the horrible but possible event that the sitting president dies or is incapacitated.

Politics is the art of compromise, especially in a country this big and diverse. It's an ugly process but it's better by far than the way less democratic governments change hands.

I'll tell you what would have made me vote for that wingnut Cynthia McKinney (Green Party candidate): if Obama had chosen Chet Edwards (DINO, TX) to be VP.  That's who Nancy Pelosi said would make a great VP.  She needs to put down the crack pipe before she gets on the plane to Denver.

The only remarkable thing about CE is that he hails from W's district. It would have been purely cynical, calculating political choice instead of the real world, grown-up choice like Biden. I would have cut up my Obama t-shirts and bumper stickers and sent them to Obama's campaign HQ in DC if it had been Chet Edwards.

Obama needs an attack dog right now, plus an insider who doesn't put her own political ambitions above the good of the country and can run the country if necessary.

Good choice, Barack.

I think this decision of Obama's, reflects well on him ... too
It shows he doesn't make a radical decision, or be stubborn or sulky. Just those three attributes will be infinitely better than Dumbya.
Biden was a grown up choice, and a humble choice of Obama's. No celebrity superstar garbage can be spewed about picking Biden.
I have a new Obama t-shirt...which hasn't been worn yet, but today seems a good day to take it for a test drive.

Clearly Biden's better than some
but it's a matter of degree to me. Obama could have made a worse choicve but he could have made a much, much better one IMO

our cookie
For this progressive, I think my cookie is supposed to be that Nunn isn't the VP nom. But, it really tastes like a poop cookie since I care about economic disparity in the US. MBNA/BOA Biden looks like a choice meant to address an area where the press has painted Obama as weak: gaining the confidence of moderate white men who'll never feel quite right about a candidate unless the candidate looks like them.

The Obama camp is working on the assumption that they can take me for granted. Sadly, they're not wrong. I care to much about the future composition of the SCOTUS to stay home in November or pull the lever in protest for someone else.

Maybe I'm overly pessimistic this morning because I'm about to go pick up a moving van.  I hate moving!

I'm holding my nose, too
I'm glad at least he isn't a huge homophobe (just a little one), but he doesn't work for the "good of the country", he works for the good of his corporate masters. The bankruptcy reform bill testified to that, amply. He sold his soul to Citibank and they own him.

All of you who are cheering this selection, just hope you're never in the position of having to file for bankruptcy. Joe's bill makes sure the credit card companies don't lose a penny, and you'll be working for them for the rest of your life.

Cause any fool knows, a dog needs a home; a shelter from pigs on the wing

Several things:
He brings a personal narrative that makes him the perfect guy to go after St. John POW Maverick--while allowing Obama to stay out of it.

He brings serious foreign policy cred, which is perceived to be Obama's weakness.

He puts PA in play more strongly, since he's quite popular there, and he helps neutralize Obama's "Appalachian problem".

Sure, it would have been nice to have a progressive--but who? None of the other names seriously mentioned are any better, and most (Bayh, Nunn) are a lot worse.

And honestly, in what universe did anyone really think the black guy wasn't going to pick a white guy for his running mate? Much as I'd have liked to see the double POC ticket, I'm not sure this country's ready for one nontraditional candidate on the ticket, let alone two.

Wait ti Monday morning
Biden can be somewhat of a loose cannon.  Come Monday we'll start hearing every crazy soundbite from throughout his career.  And if my memory serves me correctly, there are some doozies.  This will force Obama to devote more time defending Biden, his reputation and his record, and less time talking about his vision for the future.

He could be worse than 78%...
So, the HRC gives him 78% for the previous full session of congress and says "He's the best?!"  Well, as a federal employee I'd feel a lot better about him if he were to join Obama and Durbin and 20 other Senators and co-sponsor S.2521, "A bill to provide benefits to domestic partners of Federal employees."  Why hasn't he already done this?  Why doesn't this really important bill ever get discussed?

Biden choice..... makes McCain suck up and have to pick Mittler
Pawlenty would be eaten up and spit out by Biden, and McCain won't dare divide his Republican base with pro-choice pick of Lieberman or Ridge.

Biden will snap a towel on Mittler's magic undies LOL!

DID like that one...
Joe does bring in the "common man" element needed- doesn't have a penthouse in DC but rather takes the train back and forth every day from Delaware. WOW.
