The Christian Civic League of Maine's Mike Hein calls Pam's House Blend:
"a leading source of radical homosexual propaganda, anti-Christian bigotry, and radical transgender advocacy."

He is "praying that Pam Spaulding will "turn away from her wicked and sinful promotion of homosexual behavior." (CCLM's web site, 10/15/07)

Ex-gay "Christian" activist James Hartline on Pam:
"I have been mocked over and over again by ungodly and unprincipled anti-christian lesbians."
(from "Six Years In Sodom: From The Journal Of James Hartline," 9/4/2006, written from the "homosexual stronghold" of Hillcrest in San Diego).

"Pam is a 'twisted lesbian sister' and an 'embittered lesbian' of the 'self-imposed gutteral experiences of the gay ghetto.'" -- 9/5/2008

Peter LaBarbera of Americans for Truth Against Homosexuality heartily endorses the Blend, calling Pam:

A "vicious anti-Christian lesbian activist."
(Concerned Women for America's radio show [9:15], 1/25/07)

"A nutty lesbian blogger."
(MassResistance radio show [16:25], 2/3/07)

Pam's House Blend always seems to find these sick f*cks. The area of the country she is in? The home state of her wife? I know, they are everywhere. Pam just does such a great job of bringing them out into the light.

White privilege, McCain/Palin -- and the Kenyan witchhunter

by: Pam Spaulding

Wed Sep 17, 2008 at 05:00:00 AM EDT

Tim Wise's bio lets you know he's in a unique position to lay this out on the line. He is the director of the Association for White Anti-Racist Education (AWARE) in Nashville, Tennessee.
He lectures across the country about the need to combat institutional racism, gender bias, and the growing gap between rich and poor in the U.S. Wise has been called a "leftist extremist" by David Duke, "deceptively Aryan-looking" by a member of the Ku Klux Klan, and "the Uncle Tom of the white race," by right-wing author, Dinesh D'Souza.
Well, Wise discusses the third rail of race in a way many progressives usually avoid because it's pretty damn uncomfortable. Here's Wise's assessment of white privilege and its lingering, nagging impact on race relations in this country and this election. Snippets from "This is Your Nation on White Privilege" are below the fold, as well as a prime example of what Wise is talking about when it comes to Sarah Palin and her praise of a witchhunter - she believes his laying on of hands helped her win the gubernatorial election in Alaska.
Pam Spaulding :: White privilege, McCain/Palin -- and the Kenyan witchhunter
For those who still can't grasp the concept of white privilege, or who are constantly looking for some easy-to-understand examples of it, perhaps this list will help.

* White privilege is when you can get pregnant at seventeen like Bristol Palin and everyone is quick to insist that your life and that of your family is a personal matter, and that no one has a right to judge you or your parents, because "every family has challenges," even as black and Latino families with similar "challenges" are regularly typified as irresponsible, pathological and arbiters of social decay.

* White privilege is when you can attend four different colleges in six years like Sarah Palin did (one of which you basically failed out of, then returned to after making up some coursework at a community college), and no one questions your intelligence or commitment to achievement, whereas a person of color who did this would be viewed as unfit for college, and probably someone who only got in in the first place because of affirmative action.

* White privilege is when you can claim that being mayor of a town smaller than most medium-sized colleges, and then Governor of a state with about the same number of people as the lower fifth of the island of Manhattan, makes you ready to potentially be president, and people don't all piss on themselves with laughter, while being a black U.S. Senator, two-term state Senator, and constitutional law scholar, means you're "untested."

* White privilege is being able to claim your experience as a POW has anything at all to do with your fitness for president, while being black and experiencing racism is, as Sarah Palin has referred to it a "light" burden.

* And finally, white privilege is the only thing that could possibly allow someone to become president when he has voted with George W. Bush 90 percent of the time, even as unemployment is skyrocketing, people are losing their homes, inflation is rising, and the U.S. is increasingly isolated from world opinion, just because white voters aren't sure about that whole "change" thing. Ya know, it's just too vague and ill-defined, unlike, say, four more years of the same, which is very concrete and certain.

White privilege is, in short, the problem.

Amen. Wise's essay collection, Speaking Fluently: Anti-Racist Reflections From an Angry White Male, is out now.

***

And that dovetails with this beyond bizarre aspect of the Sarah "Armegeddon" Palin story -- it illustrates what she can get away with because of white privilege:

Palin linked electoral success to prayer of Kenyan witchhunter.

The pastor whose prayer Sarah Palin says helped her to become governor of Alaska founded his ministry with a witchhunt against a Kenyan woman who he accused of causing car accidents through demonic spells.

At a speech at the Wasilla Assembly of God on June 8 this year, Mrs Palin described how Thomas Muthee had laid his hands on her when he visited the church as a guest preacher in late 2005, prior to her successful gubernatorial bid.

..."As I was mayor and Pastor Muthee was here and he was praying over me, and you know how he speaks and he's so bold. And he was praying "Lord make a way, Lord make a way."

"And I'm thinking, this guy's really bold, he doesn't even know what I'm going to do, he doesn't know what my plans are. And he's praying not "oh Lord if it be your will may she become governor," no, he just prayed for it. He said "Lord make a way and let her do this next step. And that's exactly what happened."

I want you to just imagine how much (and what kind of) coverage this would receive if the above statements were uttered by Barack Obama -- note Muthee is from Kenya, so it would only add gas to the fire stoked by the right on that front. And bonus points accelerants for this aspect of Muthee's ministry:
The pastor speaks of his offensive against a demonic presence in the town in a trailer for the evangelical video "Transformations", made by Sentinel Group, a Christian research and information agency.

...According to accounts of the witchhunt circulated on evangelical websites such as Prayer Links Ministries, after Pastor Muthee declared Mama Jane a witch, the townspeople became suspicious and began to turn on her, demanding that she be stoned. Public outrage eventually led the police to raid her home, where they fired gunshots, killing a pet python which they believed to be a demon.

This guy makes Rev. Wright look like Billy Graham. How would this have been played by the professional right wing "Christian" organizations and the far-right crowd if we were talking about a Muthee association with Obama instead of Sarah Palin? I think we all know the answer.

As a commenter so aptly said the other day, sometimes I'm ashamed to be a white woman.

Wow!
As a social worker I can attest to how often women from ethnic minority communities are "held responsible" and judged pretty harshly by the very people that want us to be non-judgmental towards white, middle-class mother Palin and her white daughter.

A friend of mine (who is Asian American) mentioned this essay to me, but could not remember where he had seen it. I'm very happy that you blogged about this.

Good stuff!

I might quote it and refer to it in an upcoming podcast, too.

Tim Wise
Louise and others, please do not feel ashamed to be white.  We gain nothing by dwelling in guilt.  We are what we are, and what is important is that we recognize the privilege we do have.  It is something greater than us, but we can still be advocates and allies--calling out white privilege when we see it and helping others identify it as well.

I had the privilege of seeing Tim Wise speak here at Iowa State University last week and he was phenomenally engaging.  If such an opportunity comes your way, please do not miss it!

"Wise" Words
I agree and the fact that David Duke and the KKK don't like what he says makes it even more correct.

Shame can be a good thing
It's shame that leads to outrage and change via social activism and, dare I say it, community organization.   When people see something horrible that outrages dignity and are ashamed for the human race, for Americans, for white people, or any group, that can be a positive force.

See, for instance, the work of Gershen Kaufman:

great read
This is a great read and post.  I wouldn't have known about this otherwise.  And hey, if D'Souza hates it, it's got to be good!

Thanks Pam!

Electricity's for light bulbs!

This country is so obviously racist,
and white privilege is so obviously a big factor in our national affairs, I honestly don't understand why most white people bother denying it.  It's like denying the sky is blue--all you have to do is look, and you see it.

Cynic, n.  A blackguard whose faulty vision sees things as they are, not as they ought to be.

Palin for What?!?!?!
The bit about Palin demonstrates that she is unhinged. Besides the fundies say that women are to graciously submit to their husbands. This opens the question of who is really running Alaska and who would really be the VP - Sarah or Todd???

Excellent Post!
I hope he posts his fall schedule soon, because I would love to attend.

As for the Palin portion, What is going on with republicans? They berate Obama for being inexperienced, then they pick a VP that is less experienced. They ranted about Obama's pastor, then pick a VP with a pastor even more unhinged. The accuse Obama of being a celebrity, then they construct their own...

Great Post
I want to first start off by saying I love your blog and take great enjoyment in throwing what you say in my father's face when he talks about why McCain should be the next leader of our nation.  Thanks and keep up the good work!

Secondly, I totaly agree with what you're saying here.  It is sad and completly unfair that McCain/Palin can get away with so much and yet be able to call out Obama.  Yes, he may be untested but his base credentials alone give him more qualification than McCain.  Add to the fact that he has had to work harder and be better to overcome stereotypes and you get a man that can identify with most Americans.  It is a sad truth that so much racism still exists today despite everything our nation had gone through, in light off all of this, people will still vote for McCain/Palin just because of their skin.

White Privilege
What is playing out here is the sub-text of this election: playing on white fears of black. No one, except the most extreme racists, will speak openly of their "fear", "despondency", "repulsion", or "hatred" of African-Americans or the possible election of a black President. Too many people hide their true feelings, which are constantly reinforced by focusing on false accusations such as "Obama is a Muslim" or indirect, subliminal references to "community organizers" or Rev Wright. These are the people who are going to vote for John McCain and Sarah Palin - because they are "white" and for no other reason. And this is probably a major reason why McCain did not choose Condi Rice, far more experienced and qualified than the Caucasian Ms. Palin, to be his Vice President.
We have made history in nominating Senator Obama for President. As a privileged white male I have lived through and observed many years of discrimination and fear and dehumanization of blacks. Senator Obama's nomination by a major political party is a MAJOR step toward sanity, but we have a long journey ahead of us to eliminate the covert racism that is endemic in our society. His election will help our country to achieve that.

Not just white, but religious privilege.
No doubt in my mind that we are seeing white privilege being acted out here.  But we're also seeing Xtian power privilege too.  I'm not sure how to separate them, but maybe it's not necessary.  The combo of white power xtain is pretty potent.  White power xtians WILL NOT be denied and have an feeling of unacknowledged entitlement the size of Texas.  They're pissed, and they're ready for their close-up now.

Palin blasphemes God
by implying that Pastor Muthee made god clear the way for Palin's gub. election.  Maybe this is common fare in AOG churches, but in most of Xtiandom it is blasphemy.

Palin = Falwell
Was it John Stewart who said the difference between Palin and Falwell was lipstick?  Maybe it's just a byword by now.  She's no different from Falwell and all the other Christo-fakirs.  So Palin of course sees herself as fated to rule, chosen by God, privileged, unique, elite.  How else could someone so humble end up with a $2500 Valentino jacket and a $35,000 tanning bed?  The Lord is showering her with riches and gifts!
