Makes me Sick

I am a Missouri native. I have lived in Arkansas for almost four years and in that time I have seen home disintegrate. It makes me absolutely sick to think that the place where I was born can have these corrosive feelings towards anyone and have those people believe anything that they hear.

Sick, absolutely sick. This behavior is not welcome or wanted and is very shameful. I hope they catch  the low life SOB's who do any of this.

Yesterday in Northern Virginia

we passed a big Obama sign by the road, someone had scrawled "SOCIALISM" all over it in red paint.

This election is bringing out the fringe loonies like nothing else I've ever seen. They're totally freaking out.

Here's what I find about compromise--

I saw a video on Breitbert site of a lesbian's yard having her NO on PROP 8 sign tore off and YES on PROP 8 left on her lawn. This woman who they protect her privacy by not showing her face, NEEDS A CANE to walk with.

MY how F*CKIN BRAVE do you have to be to trash a woman with a disability's HOME?

JUST DISGUSTING. I would wish for ten well built queer guys to stand in her yard with BASEBALL BATS in broad daylight, letting all her neighbors KNOW we ain't leaving this woman at the mercy of their HATE.

Nut this IS the AMERICA I knew and know. This sort of thing has always been there. There were these little junior fascists in high school 40+ years ago when I was there. The McCain/Pallin campaign has just brought it bubbling to the surface again. The only real difference is that too many people, especially those in authority, seem to have bought in to the whole 'post racial' society myth.

Rural MO has a long history of white supremacy and religious bigotry

In addition, the whole Ozarks region (including northern AR) and southern IL and IN are particularly problematic. I know a white Jewish woman (with a classic Jewish name on her driver's license) who doesn't like to exit the freeway anywhere from St. Louis to Memphis (I-55) or points southwest (I-44). She's old enough to remember the series of white neoNazi style militia killings in the mid-80s and the late 1990s spree of a white supremacist shooting blacks and Jews at rural state universities in southern IL and IN.

I don't blame her. St. Louis, Columbia (the state university town), Kansas City are mostly rational places, Springfield is iffy but improving some, and the rest of the state needs to be viewed with caution in mind, at least so far as actually spending considerable time there in the community, if you are black, obviously gay, of obvious Indian subcontinent (incl. Bangladesh, Pakistan) ancestry and not a physician, if obviously Muslim even if a physician, and often if obviously Jewish. (Rural areas are often only able to attract foreign medical graduates).

As you can tell, I don't feel optimistic about the state that I have lived in for 20+ years, in some ways it seems to have gone backward in the last 10 years, at least outside the two major metropolitan areas.

I have never been to Eureka Springs AR, an old resort town in the Ozarks, always dependent on tourism, now catering to an odd mix of the fundies coming to see the annual passion play (founded by an American fundamentalist white supremacist and  Nazi sympathizer in the 1930s) and southern Midwest gay tourists looking for gay-friendly or gay-owned bed and breakfast places. I gather that the fundies are having a conniption fit, and Eureka Springs has become nationally famous in the fundie world for the "horrors of the gay takeover".

Parkway West is in the St. Louis wealthy(?) exurb of Chesterfield

I haven't checked recently, but there are a lot of megamansions out in Chesterfield, and I'd bet that now there are some owners frantic to make house payments on houses they expected to flip or renegotiate mortgages. The Parkway complex of schools (basically, the better off suburbs of West County north of the two most prestigious old western suburbs) has always had Merit Scholars and finalists, often Asian or Indian subcontinent or Jewish, and used to participate in the voluntary busing program with the City schools (hence a small black student population), but has had its share of slacker white fundies and other whites with entitlement complexes. I am a bit surprised that this got out of control.
