The Christianist Solution

From the NY Daily News:

A Wal-Mart worker died after being trampled when hundreds of shoppers smashed through the doors of a Long Island store Friday morning, police and witnesses said.
...
Three other shoppers suffered minor injuries, cops said.
Wal-Mart spokesman Dave Tovar called the incident a "tragic situation."

The solution to this is clear: 'Wal-Mart' must be banned.

Such riotous thuggery goes against centuries of teaching about the true meaning of Thanksgiving and Christmas. Clearly, the source of all such problems relating to the sanctity of Thanksgiving and Christmas is the so-called 'Wal-Mart.'

Oh...

That doesn't make any sense?

Well, it makes about as much sense as banning same-sex marriage being a solution to all of the 'problems' with 'the family.'

'Tis the season

Personally, I feel that Wal-Mart still should be banned, but it has to do with unfair labor practises, not because the so-called spirit of the holidays has been violated.

Although...it really does show how warped consumerism is when someone is trampled to death over some stupid sweater or snow-blower being on sale.

From the Los Angeles Times' 2 men die in shooting at Toys 'R' Us in Palm Desert:

Gunfire erupted inside a busy Toys "R" Us store in Palm Desert Friday morning, leaving two men dead as shoppers scrambled for cover.
The shooting, apparently sparked by a personal dispute between two groups of shoppers, occurred on Black Friday, traditionally one of the year's busiest shopping days, and when the store was crowded with families and children.
...Riverside County Sheriff's Sgt. Dennis Gutierrez declined to release the names of the victim, nor did he know how many weapons had been recovered. Palm Desert Councilman Bob Spiegel said the men were killed in an exchange of gunfire.
Toys "R" Us officials released a statement saying they are "outraged by the act of violence . . . and by the fact that anyone would compromise the safety and security of our customers and employees."
"Our understanding is that this act seems to have been the result of a personal dispute between the individuals involved. Therefore, it would be inaccurate to associate the events of today with Black Friday," the statement said.

Well, thank goodness it wasn't Black Friday that brought the violence -- it just happened on Black Friday in a toy store's parking lot!

I wonder if the employees, prior to the shooting, were encouraged to tell the shoppers Merry Christmas? -- y'know, like the American Family Association and Focus On The Family encourage retail businesses to do during the holiday season...

I can't understand why

Focus on the Family and all those fundy groups get so upset when businesses (or employees) do not specifically mention Christmas. I thought Christmas is supposed to be VERY Holy. If anything, they should be very pissed if anyone used their sacred religion as some sort of cheap marketing tool.

scenes like this just make you shake your head every year. Shame there's always a story of some crowd just turning into savages to get into a goddamn store to buy shit, trampling people as they go. And not even surprised that someone was killed. It's a sad state of affairs.

At Least It Wasn't Over Furby

Well you know the "christian" types - it ain't Christmas unless there's bloodshed.

But it was a lot worse when Furby was hot - people getting into the Christmas spirit by getting into fist fights in stores over that annoying little bastard. That year, I'm sure Dobson was begging Tony Perkins to twist his nipples while they were watching the news on Black Friday.
