The Christian Civic League of Maine's Mike Hein calls Pam's House Blend:
"a leading source of radical homosexual propaganda, anti-Christian bigotry, and radical transgender advocacy."

He is "praying that Pam Spaulding will "turn away from her wicked and sinful promotion of homosexual behavior." (CCLM's web site, 10/15/07)

Ex-gay "Christian" activist James Hartline on Pam:
"I have been mocked over and over again by ungodly and unprincipled anti-christian lesbians."
(from "Six Years In Sodom: From The Journal Of James Hartline," 9/4/2006, written from the "homosexual stronghold" of Hillcrest in San Diego).

"Pam is a 'twisted lesbian sister' and an 'embittered lesbian' of the 'self-imposed gutteral experiences of the gay ghetto.'" -- 9/5/2008

Peter LaBarbera of Americans for Truth Against Homosexuality heartily endorses the Blend, calling Pam:

A "vicious anti-Christian lesbian activist."
(Concerned Women for America's radio show [9:15], 1/25/07)

"A nutty lesbian blogger."
(MassResistance radio show [16:25], 2/3/07)

Pam's House Blend always seems to find these sick f*cks. The area of the country she is in? The home state of her wife? I know, they are everywhere. Pam just does such a great job of bringing them out into the light.

You don't stand alone, Wyoming Rep. Zwonitzer

by: Pam Spaulding

Fri Feb 23, 2007 at 17:00:00 PM EST

It's time to recognize a politician with a spine: Dan Zwonitzer, a straight state rep in Wyoming -- a Republican -- who voted to defeat a bill that would have allowed Wyoming to ban recognition of legal same-sex unions -- it died in committee.

Activist Michael Petrelis dropped him a kind note for his bravery, and Zwonitzer in his reply said that -- no surprise -- the Rep. is receiving the expected awful emails from the voices of intolerance (he emailed me and said that the majority aren't coming from folks in his district).

What makes Zwonitzer inspiring and so deserving of praise is that the risk he took, in Red State America, as a straight ally. He was willing to put his neck and political career on the line to do what is right -- he is a Republican doing so at a time when Democrats in much more favorable political environs are spineless, calculating and treating us like ATMs and pariahs as it suits them.

Even more, Zwonitzer not only voted against the measure, but he gave an impassioned speech in favor of equality that I am sharing with you after the fold.

Pam Spaulding :: You don't stand alone, Wyoming Rep. Zwonitzer

Thank you Mr. Speaker and Members of the Committee.

I am not going to speak of specifics regarding this bill, but rather talk about history and philosophy in regards to this issue.

It is an exciting time to be in the legislature while this issue is being debated. I believe this is the Civil Rights struggle of my generation.

Being a student of history, as many of you are, and going back through history, most of history has been driven by the struggle of man against government to endow him with more rights, privileges and liberties to be bestowed upon him.

In all of my high school courses, we only made it through history to World War 2. It wasn't until college that I really learned of the civil rights movement in the 60's. My American History professor was black, and we spent a week discussing civil rights. I watched video after video where people stood on the sidelines and yelled and threw things at black students walking into schools, I've read editorials and reports by both sides of the issue, and I would think, how could society feel this way, only 40 years ago.

Under a democracy the civil rights struggle continues today, where we have one segment of our society trying to restrict rights and privelges from another segment of our society. My parents raised me to know that this is wrong.

It is wrong for one segment of society to restrict rights and freedoms from another segment of society. I believe many of you have had this conversation with your children.

And children have listened, my generation, the twenty-somethings, and those younger than I understand this message of tolerance. And in 20 years, when they take the reigns of this government and all governments, society will see this issue overturned, and people will wonder why it took so long.

My kids and grandkids will ask me, why did it take so long? And I can say, hey, I was there, I discussed these issues, and I stood up for basic rights for all people.

I echo Representative Childers concerns, that testifying against this bill may cost me my seat. I have two of my precinct committee persons behind me today who are in favor of this bill, as I stand here opposed, and I understand that I may very well lose my election. It cost 4 moderate Republican Senators in Kansas their election last year for standing up on this same issue. But I tell myself that there are some issues that are greater than me, and I believe this is one of them. And if standing up for equal rights costs me my seat so be it. I will let history be my judge, and I can go back to my constituents and say I stood up for basic rights. I will tell my children that when this debate went on, I stood up for basic rights for people.

I can debate the specifics of this bill back and forth as everyone in this room can, but I won't because the overall theme is fairness, and you know it. I hope you will all let history be your judge with this vote. You all know in your hearts where this issue is going, that it will come to pass in the next 30 years. For that, I ask you to vote no today on the bill. Thank you.

The equality movement has to support people of conscience who go to bat for us, regardless of party. Allies like Rep. Zwonitzer, particularly at the state level, cannot stand alone taking the arrows from those who endorse bigotry, while our advocacy organizations align by party, and do little to facilitate change like this in flyover country.

Will we see a press release from HRC praising Republican Zwonitzer? What do you think?

***

From a response I just received from Rep. Zwonitzer:

I have obviously thought about this issue a great deal in the last 24 hours, and have truly come to realize that marriage in any form is greater than allowing a group of our citizens to continually be persecuted; and I've come to understand that many of the reasons they are vilified in our society is directly related to the fact there is not an opportunity to form recognized, committed long-term relationships.

It is my sincere hope that the outside world does not continue to believe Wyoming to be an intolerant and bigoted state. We have a low population which does not allow a lot of room for intolerance here as everyone knows everyone. When people come to know others who are different and accept them, their attitudes change.

Luckily, I have not had significant negative feedback today from people in my District. Yes, there has certainly been some comment from citizens from the "deep red" portions of my state. I am hoping that the silent majority of Wyoming understands and agrees with me, as I am fairly confident they do. It was greatly controversial right up until it was killed in committee, and within a day things have settled back down.

Excellent
Notice the chirping crickets, too, on how to respond to a post praising a GOP politician... :)  Many on the left are so reflexively anti-GOP these days there is some cognitive dissonance when a Republican does and says the right thing.

We should thank every politician for their efforts to help us and lambast every politician for their efforts to harm us.  It shouldn't even matter what party they belong to.

crickets
...or, it's just because you got to posting only seven minutes after the story went to front page!

Wonderful!
I don't care what side o' the political fence - that was one of the most impassioned speeches on a subject near and dear to my heart that I have ever heard.

Whilst people like John "Can't Get My Head Around Gay Marriage" Edwards and sHillary "DOMA-wife" Clinton on my own party continue to throw us to the back of the bus (or under it), I love to see a person such as this man who would rather give up a seat in the "hallowed halls" of our mostly-bullsh*t state and federal legislature than have to face his conscience (and his grandchildren) years later when they do indeed ask, "What took us so long?"

ee

Posted this on the DNC site too
I don't care what party they are in.  If they stand up for me and mine, I'll stand up for them.  God(dess) bless this man for his courage and good heart.  I'm sending him a thank you right now.

Leadership? The sad thing is it's so rare to see
It is amazing to me the contrast between this man of character and the leading Democratic candidates for President. Here is someone who fully well knows he might harm his political career, but is willing to lead on an issue (you know, they way politicians are actually supposed) to - the difference between that and DINO sHillary are breathtaking, not to mention "I'm just not there yet" John "I replaced my dead son with two spares" Edwards, and the rest of the pathetic crew we have to choose from.

Positions... not parties
I have always felt that as an informed voter, it is far more important to vote positions on issues, not party membership. This is why I have occasionally voted for a GOP candidate when I agreed with their platform. Obviously Dan Zwonitzer is the kind of Republican that believes in the ideals of America and places them above pandering to bigots in order to win their votes. By doing that, he would certainly earn my vote.

I sent Rep. Zwonitzer the following e-mail:

Dear Representative Zwonitzer:

I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your vote to defeat the bill that would have banned recognition of legal same-sex unions.  Even though I am not a constituent (I live in Pennsylvania), I believe that the actions you have taken regarding this bill will benefit LGBT citizens across the United States.

Your vote, your impassioned speech in the Wyoming legislature, and your willingness to risk your political career for what is right, make you a hero in my book.

Sincerely,

-- Jan Rachel Friedman

This story literally brought tears to my eyes.

As he is Republican, I am sure that there are issues about which I would disagree with him.  But respect for all humanity seems to form a core belief of his, and if I lived in his district, I'd vote for him in a heartbeat.

Social outrage is power protecting itself; it is not morality. -- Andrea Dworkin

Amen and bravo, Rep. Zwonitzer
Ya done good.  Big time.

me too
I sent him a note. No matter what their votes on other issues, our elected officials need to hear our praise when they do right by us. I'm sure he is hearing negative comments from those who hate us outside Wyoming, so I sent him a nice note all the way from Maryland. Appreciation is usually welcome from any corner.

THIS IS SO COOL!!!
And this is what the next generation is going to be like.

In our praise let us not overlook the implications...
1) This is a real, libertarian Republican's expected position, especially from a western state. It's nice to see that there are some of them still around and not just conservative Christian Repugnants.

2) As he himself points out, he is of a different generation than the overwehelming majority of homo-haters. All research shows that tolerance and acceptance of GLBTQI individuals and same-sex marriage gets higher as the demographic become younger and better education. I know it's difficult to be patient, but these are part of all the wounds that time heals. Just as it is a different queer world than it was after Stonewall and a different queer world than even 10 years ago, the queer world in the 20 years he mentions when his generation roams the corridors of power will be even more different than we can imagine.

and what will the RNC do?
They've coddled the fundie bible-thumpers. How can they, in the future, hold on to the Western libertarian crowd when it's clear these younger voters don't like that brand of Rethuglicanism?

Which is why
we're seeing the color blue more and more in the western states, even at the local levels.

True Conservatives
Any true conservative (which not all Republicans are, any more than all Dems are liberal)would recoil in horror at the prospect of using their state or the federal constitution as a tool to restrict the rights of a section of the American population.  The intent of the U.S. Constitution was to codify rights and protect them from government interference.  Though the issue of gay rights was never foreseen, the basic rights of Americans were.  Certainly as a society evolves so should the legislatures evolve with them (which is why DADT is doomed to fail, and I think Clinton knew that when he signed it), but the basic premise holds.  Constitutions are never intended as instruments of oppression and indeed where the government should get involved is to protect the minority from the tyranny of the majority.  In that instance, I cannot agree with Hate Crime Laws.  Anyone getting bashed with a baseball bat is a victim of a hate crime, no matter the reason.  But if I truly believe in free speech, I have to uphold Tim Hardaway's right to say as he believes, however odious I think his words.  Classifying free speech as a hate crime leads to book burnings.

Being an American isn't just about rights, it's also about responsible citizenship and that's what makes Zwonitzer a patriot.  A true conservative would never allow discriminatory legislation, but unfortunately true conservatives are few and far between.  They've whored themselves to the theocons as much as Dems have whored themselves to political correctness.

here, here.
damn, it's rare to find someone who thinks like I do.

can you say compassionate conservative?
that is what Rep. Zwonitzer represents....and it scares the hell out of the Bushies that would like to use that phrase...

scares the hell out of them indeed...

now if only we could scare the jeebus bug out of them and replace it with some common sense
