The Christian Civic League of Maine's Mike Hein calls Pam's House Blend:
"a leading source of radical homosexual propaganda, anti-Christian bigotry, and radical transgender advocacy."

He is "praying that Pam Spaulding will "turn away from her wicked and sinful promotion of homosexual behavior." (CCLM's web site, 10/15/07)

Ex-gay "Christian" activist James Hartline on Pam:
"I have been mocked over and over again by ungodly and unprincipled anti-christian lesbians."
(from "Six Years In Sodom: From The Journal Of James Hartline," 9/4/2006, written from the "homosexual stronghold" of Hillcrest in San Diego).

"Pam is a 'twisted lesbian sister' and an 'embittered lesbian' of the 'self-imposed gutteral experiences of the gay ghetto.'" -- 9/5/2008

Peter LaBarbera of Americans for Truth Against Homosexuality heartily endorses the Blend, calling Pam:

A "vicious anti-Christian lesbian activist."
(Concerned Women for America's radio show [9:15], 1/25/07)

"A nutty lesbian blogger."

Homobigot Rick Warren to deliver invocation at inauguration

by: Pam Spaulding

Wed Dec 17, 2008 at 17:15:00 PM EST

UPDATE: Have complaints to share? Email Parag Mehta is Obama's LGBT liaison on the transition team -
parag.mehta@ptt.gov. Feel free to share your missive to the team in the comments.

UPDATE 2: Bumping this back up top since I am continuing to add reactions to this announcement below the fold.

UPDATE 3: I will be on Glenn Greenwald's podcast tomorrow AM to talk about this travesty.

UPDATE 4: I hate to break it to them, but this statement out of the Obama camp isn't going to help them on the damage control front. They've invited a homophobic, womb-control advocate to open the inauguration, but it's just about outreach.

Linda Douglas, a spokeswoman for Obama, defended the choice of Warren, saying, "This is going to be the most inclusive, open, accessible inauguration in American history." "The president-elect certainly disagrees with him on [Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender] issues. But it has always been his goal to find common ground with people with whom you may disagree on some issues."
I'm sorry, but you don't have to give the podium and mic to someone who cannot understand church-state separation, a man who like Dobson, would like the state in everyone's bedroom. This wasn't a committee that inadvertently put a fundie on board, the announcement says: "The program participants were based on requests from the Presidential-elect and the Vice President-elect."

I can understand the selection of Rev. Dr. Joseph E. Lowery, a revered veteran of the civil rights movement co-founder with the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, to deliver the benediction at Obama's inauguration, but how on earth could he select fundie Rick Warren to do the invocation? Kyle at Right Wing Watch asked the same question and said:

As we've pointed out several times before, in 2004 Warren declared that marriage, reproductive choice, and stem cell research were "non-negotiable" issues for Christian voters and has admitted that the main difference between himself and James Dobson is a matter of tone.  He criticized Obama's answers at the Faith Forum he hosted before the election and vowed to continue to pressure him to change his views on the issue of reproductive choice.  He came out strongly in support of Prop 8, saying "there is no need to change the universal, historical defintion of marriage to appease 2 percent of our population ... This is not a political issue -- it is a moral issue that God has spoken clearly about." He's declared that those who do not believe in God should not be allowed to hold public office.
Obama inaugural team, this is a big f*ck up a la Donnie McClurkin. These folks can't claim they didn't know where Warren stood on the matter of civil rights for LGBTs -- why look, here's Warren speaking out in favor of Prop 8 (h/t Teddy Partridge):

Here's a nice tidbit about Warren. He thought of his support for Prop 8 as a "free speech" matter. Via Jim Burroway at Box Turtle Bulletin:

Rick Warren:Oh I do. I just... For five thousand years, marriage has been defined by every single culture and every single religion - this is not a Christian issue. Buddhists, Muslims, the Jews, historically marriage is a man and a woman. And so I'm opposed to that. And the reason I supported Prop 8 really, was a free speech issue. Because if it had.... First, the court overid the will of the people. But second, is, there were all kinds of threats that if you... that did not pass, then any pastor could be considered doing hate speech if he shared his views that he didn't think homosexuality was the most natural way for relationships. And that would be hate speech. To me, we should have freedom of speech. And you should be able to have freedom of speech to make your position, and I should be able to have freedom of speech to make my position. And can we do this in a civil way?
This selection is clearly not about "change" -- it's about making a high profile decision to give the stage over to a known homophobe; choosing Rick Warren is tantamount to asking any of the professional "Christian" set to stand up there. There is no excuse for this, given there are so many leaders of the faith community out there that are in alignment with equality for all.

More below the fold, including reactions from LGBT organizations (I'm adding them as they come in).

Pam Spaulding :: Homobigot Rick Warren to deliver invocation at inauguration
People For the American Way's President Kathryn Kolbert:
It is a grave disappointment to learn that pastor Rick Warren will give the invocation at the inauguration of Barack Obama.

Pastor Warren, while enjoying a reputation as a moderate based on his affable personality and his church's engagement on issues like AIDS in Africa, has said that the real difference between James Dobson and himself is one of tone rather than substance. He has recently compared marriage by loving and committed same-sex couples to incest and pedophilia.  He has repeated the Religious Right's big lie that supporters of equality for gay Americans are out to silence pastors.  He has called Christians who advance a social gospel Marxists. He is adamantly opposed to women having a legal right to choose an abortion.

I'm sure that Warren's supporters will portray his selection as an appeal to unity by a president who is committed to reaching across traditional divides. Others may explain it as a response to Warren inviting then-Senator Obama to speak on AIDS and candidate Obama to appear at a forum, both at his church.  But the sad truth is that this decision further elevates someone who has in recent weeks actively promoted legalized discrimination and denigrated the lives and relationships of millions of Americans.

HRC's response (via email):
Dear President-elect Obama -

Let me get right to the point.  Your invitation to Reverend Rick Warren to deliver the invocation at your inauguration is a genuine blow to LGBT Americans.   Our loss in California over the passage of Proposition 8 which stripped loving, committed same-sex couples of their given legal right to marry is the greatest loss our community has faced in 40 years.  And by inviting Rick Warren to your inauguration, you have tarnished the view that gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Americans have a place at your table.

Rick Warren has not sat on the sidelines in the fight for basic equality and fairness.  In fact, Rev. Warren spoke out vocally in support of Prop 8 in California saying, "there is no need to change the universal, historical definition of marriage to appease 2 percent of our population ... This is not a political issue -- it is a moral issue that God has spoken clearly about."  Furthermore, he continues to misrepresent marriage equality as silencing his religious views. This was a lie during the battle over Proposition 8, and it's a lie today.

Rev. Warren cannot name a single theological issue that he and vehemently, anti-gay theologian James Dobson disagree on.  Rev. Warren is not a moderate pastor who is trying to bring all sides together. Instead, Rev. Warren has often played the role of general in the cultural war waged against LGBT Americans, many of whom also share a strong tradition of religion and faith.

We have been moved by your calls to religious leaders to own up to the homophobia and racism that has stood in the way of combating HIV and AIDS in this country.  And that you have publicly called on religious leaders to open their hearts to their LGBT family members, neighbors and friends.

But in this case, we feel a deep level of disrespect when one of architects and promoters of an anti-gay agenda is given the prominence and the pulpit of your historic nomination.  Only when Rev. Warren and others support basic legislative protections for LGBT Americans can we believe their claim that they are not four-square against our rights and dignity. In that light, we urge you to reconsider this announcement.

Sincerely,
Joe Solmonese
President
Human Rights Campaign

Statement by Rea Carey, Executive Director, National Gay and Lesbian Task Force:
"President-elect Obama campaigned on a theme of inclusivity, yet the selection of Rick Warren to give the invocation is a direct affront to that very principle. This was a divisive choice, and clearly not one that will help our country come together and heal. We urge President-elect Obama to withdraw his invitation to Rick Warren and instead select a faith leader who embraces fairness, equality and the ideals the president-elect himself has called the nation to uphold."
Leah Mcelrath Renna, Managing Partner Of Renna Communications, said this at Huff Post:
"The Presidential Inaugural Committee, at the direction of President-elect Obama...will organize an inclusive and accessible inauguration that...unites the nation around our shared values and ideals."

Shared values and ideals? Let's let Rick Warren speak for himself.

Here's Rick Warren equating marriage equality for same-sex couples with incest and pedophilia:

"The issue to me, I'm not opposed to that as much as I'm opposed to redefinition of a 5,000 year definition of marriage. I'm opposed to having a brother and sister being together and calling that marriage. I'm opposed to an older guy marrying a child and calling that marriage. I'm opposed to one guy having multiple wives and calling that marriage."

Of course, the Judeo-Christian definition of marriage that Warren refers to in the first part of this quote were essentially property contracts that did involve "one guy having multiple wives" - but that's beside the point of this piece.

...Here's Rick Warren talking - in 2004 - about how HIV/AIDS was not an issue of concern for him until recently:

"Two years ago HIV/AIDS was not on my agenda; it was not even a blip on my radar." [emphasis added]

The deaths of more than 500,000 American citizens - the vast majority of whom were men who had sex with men - simply didn't register on Warren's radar over the course of more than two decades. The disease finally and rightly became a cause of concern for Warren and the Christians to whom he speaks when his wife brought to his attention the plight of children in Africa orphaned by the pandemic.

Same-sex relationships equal incestuous and pedophiliac abuses. Equal protection under the law for lesbian and gay American citizens isn't the same thing as civil rights. The lives and deaths of gay men less important than those of children or orphans.

The sad reality is that American gay men and lesbians have heard it all before.

But we didn't expect to have such values and ideals validated by this President-Elect at this Inauguration.

Chuck Wolfe, president and CEO of the Victory Fund, one of 12 organizations involved with the Presidential Appointments Project. It's an effort to ensure LGBT Americans get a share of the thousands of presidential appointments Barack Obama will make over the course of his administration (oh, the irony):
"Rick Warren has caused the LGBT community great pain, so the report today that he has been invited to offer the invocation at Barack Obama's inauguration is unsettling news.  For more than a year we have coordinated a community-wide effort to facilitate the inclusion of LGBT Americans at the highest levels of decision-making in Washington. The decision to invite such a controversial figure to this historic event leads me to question whether any LGBT individuals were consulted, and highlights the importance of building an administration that includes qualified LGBT Americans who are ready to serve their country."

NOTE: Oops. Didn't see Scott's diary on the same topic.

Bye-Bye Barry!

No, this is much worse than McClurkin.
Obama is giving Warren, who actively works to strip us of our rights, international exposure.  Having a blatant homobigot give the inaugural invocation send a deep message to me and the world that this is what Obama is all about.

Sad that he didn't choose an unknown person of color to do this.  Or Gene Robinson.  Or a homeless person.  Or anyone who stands for love.  But he chose a hardened meg-bucks hater.  He has shown his cards big time, and he has give Warren the international stage.

FUCK YOU OBAMA

Jesus!!!
Really???  Fuck you Obama???  Because of someone he picked to do his inauguration?  I have no issue with people being upset by it, but let's face it - there IS NO person that could have done this that wouldn't have upset SOMEONE...

He worked a lot with this guy at the "AIDS and The Church" conference, and I thought Obama's reasoning to try and bring some unity by selecting people to do different things from all over the board was accurate and smart.  He says he wants to work WITH different groups in the hope that everyone will start to get used to working with different "sides" and hopefully all start working together some day.

I think it's extremely sad that MY community can't seem to see past some "thing" or "stance" that someone has and decide that anyone that ever stands within 20 ft of them is scum.  Have we become that childish?  Do we believe that this choice is going to give Obama "anti-gay cooties???"

I am not celebrating his choice, but for Christ's sake, we have no idea what or why people will do what they do.  It doesn't make their choices wrong, it just means that we don't really know what they are doing - is it possible that he is doing something that will help bring the GLBT community and the more religious communities together?  I'm not saying he is - but is it POSSIBLE?

So I guess with this rant, we are now hoping, based on this choice, that McCain runs again next term so that you can correct the mistake of voting for Obama, in the hopes that they will choose a better person for the swearing in?  Honestly - talk about short sighted - Let's continue to bash him and scream Fuck You, so that he ends up going, "Wow...  I really don't feel like I need to do anything to try and help these people any longer..."  Pick your fuckin' battles people...

Another slap in the face
Even though I know Obama's stance on same-sex marriage I really don't understand this choice - especially given how charged this issue is right now.

This really feels like a slap on the other cheek.  Guess which cheeks I'll be exposing next?!!??

Please write Obama and let him know how disappointed you are.  Maybe we can turn this around.

I think we can

No No No No NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What a kick in the gut.

More political expediency?
I thought Obama's affection for Rick Warren was a matter of a candidate doing what it takes to win an election...like that is an admirable or excusable trait.

Now we have God's mixmasters working together post election to resurrect America's George Wallace moment:  "Segregation today.  Segregation tomorrow.  Segregation forever!"

Obama must be very proud of himself.

The LGBT community has proven it's insane stupidity once again for supporting this candidate.

He's not officially the president and already I have no reluctance to say, "I told you so."

Good job, gays!!  Keep holding your breath....

Shifting the blame...
Over at Pandagon, a reader responding to my post said:

"Salon.com is reporting that the decision was not made by Obama, but rather by the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies."

My response:
"Well then it's easy, Obama can decide that this was an inappropriate choice and do something about it now that it's been brought to his attention. Think he'll do anything?"

For the love of God...
no pun intended....Nancy Pelosi and Dianne Feinstein are on this committee???!???

"The program participants were invited by the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies and chosen by the Chairman, the Presidential-elect and the Vice President-elect. In addition to Senator Feinstein, the members of the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies include: Senator Bob Bennett, Ranking Member of the Senate Rules Committee; Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid; Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi; House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer; and House Republican Leader John Boehner."

She thinks the inaugural selections are wonderful:
"I am delighted to announce this superb line-up of participants in the 2009 inaugural ceremonies," said Senator Feinstein. It is appropriate that the program will include some of the world's most gifted artists from a wide range of backgrounds and genres."

Subject: Remove Rick Warren from the Inaugural Please
Dear Parag,

Choosing anti-gay activist Rick Warren to give the invocation at Mr. Obama's Inaugural is unconscionable.  It condones Warren's message of anti-LGBT hate.  It says that Obama does not believe that our call for civil rights is valid or supported by him.  And what a special insult at this pivotal moment in civil rights history when a non-white person is inaugurated.  Talk about spitting in our faces.

Well, in fairness, this is also the Repuke

Here's mine (to Parag and Emmett)
Good morning,

I am writing today to express my extreme disappointment on the selection of Pastor Rick Warren to deliver the invocation at the Presidential Inauguration.

I understand that President-Elect Obama and Pastor Warren have, despite their many disagreements, forged a friendship in recent months, but this selection feels like a slap in the face to the many, many progressives who volunteered their time, talent, and sweat to Obama's election.  Warren, as you're undoubtedly aware, has compared marriage equality for the gay community to incest.

I realize that Warren is not likely to be un-invited to speak, but I hope that you will share this note and the others that you receive with the President-Elect, so that he understands how hurt and betrayed many of his supporters feel, particularly those of us within the LGBT community.

Also, since the disagreements between the President-Elect and Pastor Warren have been acknowledged by your own team, I would hope that you would strongly encourage Pastor Warren to restrict his remarks to those areas where he and Mr. Obama agree.  I plan to stand on the National Mall on Inauguration Day with two women I affectionately refer to as my adoptive lesbian moms, and I really don't want to stand out there in the cold and be insulted by the man that our next President chose for the official invocation.

Respectfully ...

"There are two kinds of people in this world -- the kind who separate the world into two kinds of people, and those who don't."  -- Gloria Steinem

[ Parent ]
The Democratic playbook
"Win" election and then shit all over the people who supported you, donated to you, voted for you, and believed in you.  I'd say find another constituency to triangulate away for a change, but nobody deserves this.

The primary overarching goal of the LGBT civil rights movement, as I see it, is to make it clear that anti-gay prejudice is immoral and unacceptable.  So Barack Obama is fundamentally undermining our movement, as he has in the past with his actions or inactions.

It's clear that he doesn't understand or believe in our movement, that he thinks the effect of prejudice on our lives is trivial, that he thinks our role in society is to serve as symbols of sin on which the Rick Warrens of the world can project their own shortcoming and failings.

So now we know.

We can do that; we can win in fact.
But do we have the will to do so?

Sometimes it seems that we do not, that we'd rather continue to be well behaved victims led by assimilationist conserva-queers who seem to have disdain for large parts of the community tthat they supposedly represent.

slam the emails
Everyone should take the time to personally email the liason contact given. We need to fill up the server with complaints, but also we need to make a big enough stink online to embarrass the campaign, as the FISA vote did. Even if nothing changes, the bad PR will be the exact opposite of what the administration is trying to shoot for in this honeymoon period. I suggest that we do not ask to remove Warren from the show (won't happen, Obama will not want to be seen as catering to just the reality based community) but demand a progressive invocation and speaker be added to the inauguration.

Where's an email address?
Could someone post who I can write to about this?

I am appaled by this selection.
I had hoped that electing Obama, who comes from a United Church of Christ tradition would show a return of moderate Christians to the mainstream discussion.

Apparently, I was horribly misled.  Obama is bending over backwards to make sure that the fundamentalist activists are given a premier seat at the table, while completely ignoring his own faith tradition.

This betrayal is disgusting.

Subject: Rick Warren

Dear Parag Mehta,

I am writing to express my disappointment with the decision to have Rick Warren deliver the invocation at Barack Obama's inauguration. Obama's election represents the hope of America's future as an inclusive community, but Rick Warren has frequently spoken out against the basic civil rights of the GLBT community. As you may already know, for instance, he was a strong supporter of Prop 8 and even implied that the GLBT shouldn't be able to advocate for marriage by claiming "This is not a political issue -- it is a moral issue that God has spoken clearly about." He was partially correct in his statement. Equal protection under the law isn't a political issue, it's a basic civil right."

Since you are a representative of the GLBT community on Obama's transition team, I believe you should use your position to recommend Rick Warren be replaced as the person to deliver the invocation. As someone who put in a significant amount of time, energy, and money into Obama's campaign I would be very disappointed to see his presidency start off by him closely associating with someone who openly works against allowing our community's basic civil rights.

Sincerely,

Bryan J. S.

"Our Liberties We Prize and Our Rights We Will Maintain" -- Iowa state motto

Is this really what matters?
While I've sent my missive off to the powers that be as posters here suggest , I just don't truly give a damn about this.

This topic and thread have blown up quicker than any recent policy discussion here.  To what end?  A three-minute prayer that everyone will have forgotten halfway through the inaugural ceremony?

The opening sessions of federal, state and local governmental bodies across the nation serve as platforms for enemies and friends of LGBT equality DAILY.

The policies that these bodies pursue is what matters, not the ridiculous rituals they follow.

Anybody pay attention to the Electoral College meetings on Monday in the 50 states and DC?  They followed some arcane rituals that gave platforms to friends and foes of LGBT rights.  But it didn't matter a whit.

This doesn't matter either.

There's plenty of Obama transition work that does matter (appointments, reversing executive orders, lining up fast track legislation).

The invocation at the inaugural?  Really?  And did we go after Billy Graham in years past?  Where did that get us with Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton, etc.?

It's more than a three-minute prayer, stupid!
It's a signal to the Fundie phobes: "Pay no attention to the fags. They all love me, and I've got them under control. You can go right on kicking them in the balls."

it gives it the Obama seal of approval in the public mind.

It is our formal casting out from the Obama-nation.
It is another motivation for me to seriously think about a few European offers.....raising my hopes and dashing them is beyond rude and callous, it is a mark of contempt towards all of us, women, LGBT's, secularists, members of minotiry religions.

This hysteria over an invocation is what's stupid
Of course, any choice of a glorified invocation-giver, except an openly LGBT invocation-giver, could be spun to slam LGBTs.

So, this smallest of the small "symbols" immediately and irrevocably overrides the transition teams fully inclusive hiring policy and openly LGBT appointments? That's idiocy.

Play this media game well.  Creating an insurmountable obstacle may raise the troops already in camp.  Similarly, playing the victim card to raise a firestorm against one of the most popular and media-savvy "pastors" in the country is unlikely to pay positive dividends in reaching out to the straight religious allies we need.

That said, using this issue as means to get our issues front and center is useful.  Use the attention wisely, and use it to work on something of substance.

I keep HEARING Obama and his people TALK progressive and SEE them doing exactly the opposite. I agree with those who say that it is far too early to judge just how an Obama administration might govern but the signs aren't good. From the FISA capitulation to this poke in the eye, Obama's actions more closely resemble Joe Lieberman than they do Russ Feingold. The fact is the LGBT community is getting lip service but very little in actual support from them.
If you support and then elect a right leaning Democrat, that's what you get. Once again: Obama is closer to a moderate Republican than he is to a true Progressive (Full disclosure: I supported him as well.)
Sorry, I'm not trying to be mean about it but can we now dispense with the Obama is a Progressive myth finally? If you have watched him and how he votes, this should come as no surprise at all. Hell, he CAMPAIGNED with homobigots.

my email to parag mehta:
The choice of rick warren to give the invocation is a slap in the face to every gay person in this country, as well as those who believe in a woman's right to choose, and those who desire stem-cell research to be funded and supported by OUR government.  How is this CHANGE?  If our leaders continue to pander to the religious right, rather than trying to educate them about the separation of church and state, then we will never have true equality in this country.  This is truly disappointing, and not what I voted for when I supported Mr. Obama.

I feel like Cassandra, but laughing
During the campaign several of us on this blog pointed out all the reasons to doubt Obama's commitment to LGBT equality (not to mention his commitment to "change" in general).  We were roundly criticized, not to say savaged, by other Blenders, including several who ave posted here to express anger at the choice of Warren.  Well, this Cassandra is laughing long and hard at all the chumps who supported Obama so dogmatically and who tore into us so ferociously.

The decision to use Warren may not have been made by Obama personally, but it can hardly have been made without his knowledge and consent.   And it will not be reversed, no matter how many emails get sent.  Loud, vociferous protests from the LGBT community didn't get Obama to abandon his commitment to Donnie McClurkin.  He'll stand by Warren, too.  Just watch.

HRC's Joe Solomnese letter to Obama
Gay Group Calls Obama Invocation Pick A "Genuine Blow"
17 Dec 2008 05:09 pm

Joe Solomnese, the president of the Human Rights Campaign, has sent a blistering letter to President-elect Obama, accusing him of delivering a "genuine blow" to the gay community in choosing Rev. Rick Warren to give the formal invocation at next month's inauguration.

Isn't it amazing how Solomnese...

I just saw this news on one blog, and have been furiously visiting other blogs to get more info. There is no way this can be undone, but still good to register complaints.  I am straight, and not just outraged over this pick (Warren is who he is; at least his bigotry against LGBTQs is clear - we should keep our anger focused here on those who selected him) because of his homobigotry, but also his anti-choice and anti-stem cell stance, and I am sure his many other prejudices and hatreds that just don't get as much play or he ingenuously hides.  Any American who cares about equality and justice has just been spectacularly been crapped on by this choice and Obama for accepting it.  My suggestion - mail shoes to the inauguration committee.

My two cents for Obama's liaison
Dear Parag,

As a monthly contributor to the Obama campaign, an openly gay man in a 11-year partnership, and as a committed Christian, I must write in protest of the selection of Rick Warren from Saddleback Church as the clergy person delivering the invocation at the inauguration.

This is a significant disappointment to the millions of LGBT Americans who whole-heartedly supported Sen. Obama.

Just as silence = death, Rick Warren = a bad choice.

I understand the importance, that red America as well as purple and blue States should be represented in the inaugural ceremony. But the choice of Rick Warren--who even recently has continued to make inflammatory and  infuriating comments regarding homosexual relationships and his vocal support for Prop 8--cannot be dismissed by the desire to be inclusive. It is insulting.

I strongly urge you to share the outcry of our community with the transition team and, instead of trying to justify or minimize these concerns, work hard to correct this error of judgment on the part of the Joint Inaugural Committee. Please reply and let me know what steps you intend to take channel the dismay and anger of our community to mobilize it on behalf of true change we can believe in.

Sincerely,

Mitch Wood

We all just got punk'd.

Dear Mr. Obama
I'm sorry, but no.  By selecting Rick Warren to share your stage and give your inaugural invocation you have gone too far.  I recognize that this is only one gay wallet, but this gay wallet is snapped shut and will remain so in 2012.  This fact will not change, regardless of any initiatives you take towards DADT, ENDA or any other pro-lgbt legislation.  You have gone too, too far.

I hate being proven right
To Parag Mehta and the entire Obama transition team:

With regard to the selection of Rick Warren as the invocational "pastor" (yes, I am putting that term in quotation marks), thank you for proving me right. You people are not interested in change, or progress, or making life better for all Americans. Like every other "christian" in politics, President-elect Obama is merely using his position to further push an agenda of hate and division to ingratiate himself with the far right. He has fulfilled every expectation I had of him. He has brought my prophecies to pass.

Maybe Mr. Obama needs to be reminded that less than 40 years ago people of Rick Warren's ilk were lobbying to keep people like Mr. Obama out of law school, out of public office, out of the White House.

This is 2008, and the "some of my best friends" (or Cabinet advisers) argument doesn't cut it anymore. Rick Warren claims that he's "eaten in gay houses," whatever that means; he seems to have no problem leaving the table and then working to undermine the human rights of his host. Either the President-elect sends a clear message that hate and bigotry from people like Rick Warren will not be accepted at his table, or his platform of "hope and change" means absolutely nothing.

Toss out this garbage with the last dregs of the Bush years. We don't need it, we don't want it, we don't deserve it, and Mr. Obama is supposedly better than to accept it. (I'm still waiting on the proof of that last claim.)

My letter for all the good it will do:
I cannot express enough my disappointment and disgust at the decision to allow homobigot Rick Warren to deliver the inaugural invocation. Though not religious myself, I find the choice of Mr. Warren to be a slap in the face to the LGBT community, the pro choice community and the science based community, to all three of which, I belong. This isn't change we can believe in, it's more like change we can imagine. Surely it wouldn't have been difficult to find a religious figure who hasn't made hateful remarks toward and fictitious accusations of the LGBT community. What happened to your promise of inclusion and how do you justify that juxtaposed with the selection of someone who is so divisive and doesn't believe that I deserve full rights and protection under the law?

 Was James Dobson not available?

Fuck, another 4 years without a president.

I refuse to acknowledge the legitimacy of a "President" who could make such a poor decision.  In fact, I'm beginning to see very strong evidence of a casual hatred of GLBT people by Mr. (and I do mean mister) Obama.

As a matter of fact, this is the LAST STRAW.  I'm now done with politics, done worrying about it.  Done with all the political blogs.  Fuck it all.

Goodbye folks, it's been nice knowing you.

my letter
Rather than choose one of many religious figures who could have
embodied the "post-partisan" atmosphere that President-elect Obama
says he wants to promote, a divisive and hurtful one has been given a
very meaningful role. It is a grave insult to many, many people who
worked hard to elect Obama.

Rick Warren and his fanatic followers may like to think of themselves
as moderate Christians, but they are no such thing. They would like to
keep gays and lesbians as second class citizens, deny women the right
to control their own bodies, keep torture as an American value, and
foster some more illegal wars around the world. These are public
positions that they don't try to hide. So I can only assume that Obama
now means to embrace them too, in the name of "unity"--  while
millions of Americans who believed words about "change" can now feel
used and discarded.

Putting Warren on that stage is no less than a loud "F*** you" to ALL
gay and lesbian Americans and their allies, pro-choice folks, civil
rights and antiwar activists. Obama obviously has no use for them
anymore, and will cast his lot with those who hate, divide and
discriminate. Good luck with that in 2012.

What a huge disappointment.

Here's my email
Dear President Elect Obama,

How could you have possibly allowed Rick Warren to be selected to celebrate your historic inauguration?  After his active support against the GLBT community millions who busted our butts to get you elected on Hope & Change.  Of the thousands of people of faith you could have selected who would not have been so insulting to all of us, especially this closely after his help in passing Prop 8.

I understand reaching across the aisle, and building bridges - but you don't have to throw your own underneath the bus to do it.  You reach out to those who aren't so far apart, and when you win them over, use them to help you reach out to the next larger circle.

Well, you said you'd need our help to make Washington different.  And we poured it out, in time and money and everything else we could do.  You're there now, but it's really hard to see any difference.  You see, as a gay man of way too many election cycles - there are always the promises - then "you need to wait, the time isn't right for it".  And then we're dumped to the side until the next election cycle when our votes, hours and dollars are needed once again.  Because the other side is worse.  Where is the hope or change in that.

If Rosa Parks or MLK had waited until their ideas became popular enough before they acted like leaders and drug the rest of the country along for what's right - you certainly wouldn't be standing up there on Jan 20 being sworn in.

I've heard the comparisons of you to both of them.  But today Sir, with all due respect, you didn't live up to them - by rewarding those who don't deem me an equal citizen, based on their personal religious choices.  The same people who, using the same arguments wouldn't have allowed you're parents to marry.

And to watch you swear to uphold and defend our Constitution, that got it's start with the declaration that all men are created equal - please understand, that for many in my community, that's been diminished with this choice of Rev Warren.  We understand, that no matter who we send to Washington, it's always ok to sacrifice the 2nd class citizens for some bigger political cause.

I wish you all the luck in the world, this country needs so much right now to restore it.  But that man on the stage with you in January really makes me question how you're going to be any different than what we've always had.

The only chance for this not to happen is if Warren chooses not to accept
Obama can't uninvite him. Pelosi, Reid, Feinstein will get angry letters TOO

What have you done today, to make ya feel PROUD?

Well now!
Hello to all the Hillary Haters out there.  What say you now?

Rick Warren  ---  this is NOT a "mistake"  --  it's a statement.

At least it's not a Black-Homophobic-Preacher - so we don't have to go through any more post-prop-eight crap.  He chose a POPULAR hateful WHITE bigot.  Isn't that fun?

He couldn't even pick someone more middle of the road  --  this guy is a strong slap in all our faces.

Now, talk to me about how we "have to be patient", talk about "gradualism"  --  all this when anti-LGBT-hate-crimes are on the rise  --  esp. in Washington D.C.

Gee, ain't it grand to work for your special candidate  --  and have him throw you (and your friends) under the bus.

Oh, please
I remember feeling just like this early in the Clinton administration.

Emma Goldman was right: If elections changed anything, they would be outlawed.

[ Parent ]
I don't find that comment particularly helpful.
Speaking as one who supported both candidates at different times during the primaries and as one who didn't have any use for the "Hillary is Satan" crowd either, this choice is a huge slap in the face of the entire reality based community and you use it to justify saying  I told ya so so F*ck You to the Hillary haters? Got anything more constructive?

[ Parent ]
Constructive??
What's wrong with saying "I told you so" to the Hillary Haters (TM)?  What's wrong with pointing out a REALITY that was obvious to anyone who looked with an open mind?

The most constructive thing to do is continue to vote, while organizing for EQUAL rights for all LGBT folks.  If you want to call this a fight for civil rights, you have to be willing to do what previous civil rights activists did.

Vote for the lesser of two evils while, at the same time, organizing, marching, demonstrating.

Connect with other minorities (the way Harvey Milk did), work together for mutual benefit  --  even though it might not be "fabulous".

When a mistake is made  --  speak out, call it out, admit it.  Then look for alternatives.

Obama has many different constituencies, I understand he has to appease them all.  The reality is that much of the Black Community  --  including most of the Black Church  --  has been anti-LGBT.  It might be a "hard" anti, or a "soft" anti, but it's anti nonetheless.  We will NEVER get expanded marriage rights from any nationally elected politician  --  he needs too many votes from too many different people.  File those dreams away.  We will have to fight for our rights, the old fashioned way  --  and we will most likely have to fight those who came before us  --  the way every other minority has.

A parting thought.  Did the Irish give the Italians a "hand up" in their fight for equality?  Did either give the African-American Community a hand in their ongoing fight for equality?

So?  What do you expect?  It is totally up to us  --  there is nothing wrong with calling out those who erred in the past  --  how else will we all learn?

[ Parent ]
You're trying to convince the wrong person
I don't disagree with anything you said. I'm just so over the venom spewed on blogs. Yes, Obama supporters who believed he was a progressive savior were wrong about him. Let it go.

Are we done with the debating societry about "how we will be seen?" and "they will make us look bad and lie about us?"

Are we finally committed to an "everybody goes together" policy where we leave NONE of our community behind based upon some insincere promise of a hate crimes act and an ENDA that never pass?

Are we willing to make every activity of our enemies a burden til we wear them down?

If we are not, save the whining. You'll need your strength for whinign later over the next eight years....

this guy is worse than I thought
This jackass has the nerve to call atheists arrogant and he refers to granting same sex couples the same right to marry as "appeasing 2 percent of the population." Even that conservative estimate is in the neighborhood of 6 million people.

And I'm not surprised he says that an atheist shouldn't be elected president. That's another bigotry that's still somewhat socially acceptable.

Nope, don't like this.

No Chance He'll Be Withdrawn
I agree that he can't disinvite the Right reverend, and we shouldn't even attempt to make that happen.  Do you suppose that the gay marching bands invited to the inaugural parade could be persuaded to stay home?  It would be an appropriate response, and have the advantage of being achievable.

If they stay,

Well, this is the Obama-nation
This is on a level with his message on marriage during the early Prop 8 battle. This again, lends credibility to our enemies and to their arguments. Obama clearly believes neither in the Secular Republic or any kind of true equality and citizenship for LGBT's.

I would vote for an atheist
Almost to the exclusion of every other consideration. One look at all of the death and suffering inflicted upon innocent people based on religion exposes the hypocrisy of it all. I shudder to think how close cHuckabee came to the Republican nomination and I cringe at the thought that he or someone like him is certain to run again. Bush was bad but his ideology pales to insignificance next to that of a true believer.

I think we're all going a bit overboard.
How much will this really affect in the long run?
Too many of us got this idea that Obama would be a perfect president that would fix all our problems. I never had any illusions that Obama would be completely in our corner, but he's still better than anything we've had in the past.
Is this an infuriating choice? Yes, but it has little effect in the long run. How many people remember the invocation at any inauguration?
Look at the whole picture. We have a president who has promised to sign the fully inclusive ENDA, the fully inclusive hate crimes expansion, has an openly gay woman in a high position, is seriously considering another one for secretary of labor, and will make sure the supreme court continues to protect us from being made criminals.
Should we be upset about Warren doing the invocation? Yes. Should we tell Obama and his transition team how insulting this is to us? Yes, and we should do so en mass.
Obama never gave any indication that he would be a cure-all for us. Getting as worked up over this as some of us are is not going to help anything.

Fetch my pearls, I need to clutch them!

thanks
Thanks for the voice of reason, RainbowPhoenix.

I have written my protesting emails. This was a disappointing decision on Obama's part. I have always believed there would be many disappointing decisions on his part: he's been elected president of the USA not Jesus; in my fifty years I have never trusted a president and been horrified at so many things my country has done.

But is this it? This small thing is the end of our hope for Obama? I don't think so. Perspective is called for. Rev. Warren has not been appointed to be Cabinet Secretary for lesbian and gay affairs. Let's not overstate this. And better Warren's ilk are at the inauguration and paying attention than home in California plotting against the Socialist-Muslim government.

If you don't understand this to indicate
a future role for Warren in the Obama administration (official or otherwise), I'm afraid you'll be sorely surprised later on.  Symbolism at such an occasion has great meaning.  It is Obama's first official act.  We haven't seen the last of Obama fellating Rick Warren.  DOn't say you weren't warned.

I said...
..."official or otherwise".

And does it matter how often something is happened in the past?  Obama isn't subject to any rules about that.  He could appoint him head of Faith-based Initiatives, for example.

But no matter what, it is clear that Warren has the ear of Obama.  Can we say that about any major religious pro-LGBT figure?  The answer is "no".

Lurleen on Twitter

[ Parent ]
No Evidence of That
As angry as I am about this choice, and I've emailed both the general transition account and the GLBT liaison, I am not willing to abandon all hope just yet. In fact I totally get what Obama, et. al. are trying to do, I just think this is a colossally bad way of doing it. Obama is clearly trying to reach across the aisle and embrace all Americans, and in general that is a good thing. The problem is that Warren is a lying sack of sh*t.

But his choice in no way means Obama is changing stances - in fact there is no reason at all to believe that. He has appointed a lesbian to a high-ranking position, is apparently considering another lesbian for Labor Secretary, who is also a true progressive (and, quite frankly, announcing her appointment would be one very good way to minimize this damage) and his transition team is the first in history to actually meet with LGBT representatives. All the moves except Warren are in the right direction.

What I am now interested in seeing is how this sh*tstorm plays out. Obama has built a grass-roots movement, and encouraged it to be involved. Well, I have rarely seen anything explode across the progressive/LGBT blogosphere as quickly as this story, and I am willing to bet Parag Mehta is going to have quite a full inbox tomorrow morning. The question is whether it will only stay in the progressive/LGBT blogosphere. If it hits the mainstream, we could be looking at the first PR nightmare of the Obama administration, and might just teach the incoming administration that they are playing with a bit of fire with the grass-roots thing. In fact, I think we should be making sure they learn that lesson and they're made to pay. Hell, we could get Labor Secretary, and end to DADT and fully inclusive ENDA out of this.

Hit Politico and Huffington Post
Within a three - four hours of the announcement. That bodes well for it breaking big - as Politico noted, the press is pretty desperate for some evidence progressives are pissed at Obama. This is pretty much made for that meme.

The more I read about the selection, though, the more convinced I am that Obama is not signaling any change in policy with this choice - it really is big tent politics. I am not happy about it, but I also thinks it points to the direction we need to take as an LGBT movement. This is time to play political hard ball. If that means going to the press and exposing some cracks in the Democratic coalition, then so be it. It's time for a little legislative payback Barry.

Not Changing Stances?
You are kidding right? Let's see, hmmmmmm oh yea Robert Gates staying on as Defense was the 1st change. Isn't a COMPLETE change of course in Iraq what he got him the nomination? O' and that DADT repeal, his chief military advisor Merrill McPeak said just last month, "I couldn't see how I could become an advocate for open homosexuality in Air Force combat units."

Yea you got change "CHUMP CHANGE!"

What else is happening?
Well, I took the day off work today because...

My state's majority party legislative leaders, where an amendment battle is going to be next year, is electing (elected) caucus leaders today.

Budgeting decisions in our dismal looking state budget  (in both the legislative and executive branches) are being made every day.  HIV/AIDS funding must be protected.

Appointments for a new state administration and federal administration are being made daily.

Budgets for state and local advocacy groups are being decimated and must be addressed.

And I get called a Kapo by Mr. Ehrenstein upthread for having the audacity to suggest that there are bigger things to deal with than an invocation - after I sent my email as this post urges.

That's how my day's been.

How about
the recent rash in hate crimes, the people who are losing their jobs, the people in the middle east that are getting shot at and blown up, getting blamed for Palin's church being burned down, and Bush's attempts to rewrite history. A prayer that most people won't remember ranks under those things in my priorities.

The police have a lead on suspects in that case. There is grainy surveilence footage of a flying squirrel and a moose wearing a "Whatsamatta U" sweatshirt leaving the scene. Police informant Boris Badenov filmed it while entertaining Vladimir Putin across the Bering Strait.

Guys, this is a "keep your friends close and your enemies CLOSER" move much like Hillary as SOS. Warren is an ASSHOLE. He's also an ENEMY of Obama-and don't think Obama doesn't know that. IMO, Obama's stroking his huge ego (and he has one) to keep him quiet during the next 8 years.
It's nothing more than a political move, IMO.
And no, I'm not one of those who think Obama's the savior of the world. He's just another politician. He's a SMART one, though.

I must be missing the outrage gene
Cause I'm not feeling this. I don't like Warren one bit, but every time Obama does something like this, I have to remind myself how he talked about being all inclusive.

My big fear at this point is that the GLBT community is becoming a one trick pony all about gay marriage. There are other things to be worried about. Jobs, the environment, the war. That doesn't mean not criticizing Obama, by all means, fire away. But I am gay, and black, and I have experienced discrimination of the racial sort and homophobia, and I just don't see how this one thing is going to be the end of us all. 3 minutes of a ceremony and some of you act like Obama just fired Joe Biden and hired Pat Robertson to replace him.

Warren stands for a lot more than homophobia.
He is also anti-choice and discriminates against atheists.  But if you're fine with Obama giving such a gentleman the international spotlight, bully for you.  I guess you don't appreciate serious symbolism when you see it.  Whatevs.

By the way, since this inauguration is a big deal because this is the first non-white president, Rick Warren won't jsut have 3 minutes of fame, he'll live forever in the endless videos of the day that are preserved forever and ever.  Isn't that special?  A forced-birther anti-atheist homobigot, praying over Obama, forever, in a 3 minute loop.  It makes me all misty.

Lurleen on Twitter

[ Parent ]
That would be the inclusion part
Yes, I know, an atheist who get's up and denounces all religion would be the best, but that ain't gonna happen. Like I said, why is this one part, of one ceremony supposed to make my head explode again? Warren is what he is, and I wouldn't shed a tear if a lighting bolt blew his head off right now. But I also think Obama is trying that who inclusive bit he kept talking about during the primary and the general elections season. I think some if you selectively tuned that out, and are now suddenly OUTRAGED!!! by what strikes me as an obvious crossing of the aisle thing. Look, who's more pissed, liberals or conservatives? Obama has made a decision that some on both sides think is an abomination, but for completely different reasons. If the evangelicals are this pissed, I think he did something right.

Now this I find offensive
First, I am a long time reader, but did not bother to register before. I did tonight. Why tonight? Like I said previously, this one all encompassing issue of gay marriage/prop 8, and the fact that I think there are other issues to be concerned with as well. Because I disagreed with some of the comments and decided to post. Because it's a free country.

You may disagree with me, and that's fine, but to call me troll and make a point of posting my replies strikes me as more than a bit over the top. I disagreed with what you said, and replied. Why is that trollish?

All and all, your response bothers me the most because it reflects this narrow ideology that "we" as in ALL gays must think the same. It's the virtual finger wagging that someone doesn't "get it" because they don't agree with you. I'm no troll, I have an opinion, and I will voice it. You don't have to agree, obviously we don't, but please, do not attempt to reduce me to a caricature that fits some pre-determined theory of who and what I am.

The lines were drawn in California, Hal. The HRC style of bargaining and developing networks over 1,000/ plate dinners, of putting an upper middle class and upper class face upon a movement of people who can lose their jobs, housing, and have a higher rate of being the victims of muder per year than black men did during the civil rights era in total needs to end.

We will only win through an inclusive popular uprising aimed as holding those organisations persecuting us responsible for their actions, for our pain, our economic and political marginalisation, our deaths at the hands of homophobes inspired by the speeches of evangelicals like Warren.

We need to protest, to disrupt, to arrive unseen and depart quickly, hit and run, til they cannot hold an event anywhere without our disrupting it and making the continuance of their denial of our citizenship too costly for them to continue to persue.

We CAN do this...
or we can just continue to whine

shame on Obama and his team
The selection of Rick Warren for such a prominent faith role in the inauguration ceremony makes me sick. It is a disgusting example of pandering to the right wing. I am really, really disappointed in Obama and his "team" of advisors. And starting to feel like a jackass that I believed the rhetoric of "change we can believe in". Who's we???

Here is what I sent to Parag Mehta:

Dear Mr. Mehta:

As a proud queer American, a Christian, and mother of two daughters, I am writing to express my shock and disappointment at the Obama inaugural team's decision to invite Pastor Rick Warren to deliver the invocational prayer at the inauguration on Jan. 20th, 2009. Rick Warren has actively campaigned against equal rights for the GLBT community. He served as a spokesperson for the bigoted "Yes on 8" campaign in California, which stripped GLBT citizens of the right to marry, and was based on fear, lies, and hatred of GLBT Americans. Not only that, he is radically anti-choice and anti-comprehensive sex education, which hurts all girls and women. He may not be as openly offensive as James Dobson or Pat Robertson, but his theological and political views do not differ from these hatemongers. Being a "kinder, gentler" bigot does not make the bigotry any less harmful.

My partner and I gave time, money and energy to getting Barack Obama elected in North Carolina, and we truly believed that our country would take a different course regarding equal rights under his leadership. The selection of Rick Warren to deliver the invocation is a slap in the face to every GLBT American who worked to elect Barack Obama. This choice belies Obama's stated commitment to fair and equal treatment for our community.

I strongly urge you to advocate that Mr.  Warren to be disinvited as the invocation leader for the inauguration. It would go a long way towards showing that Obama actually does care about our civil rights, and was not just paying lip service to those issues in order to get the queer vote.

Sincerely,

Elizabeth Waugh-Stewart
Chapel Hill, North Carolina

Disappointed? Disappointed!!!
How many times has that word been used in these posts.

What about "angry as hell and I'm not going to take it any more."

"Disappointed" is a weenie word.  And it will evoke a weenie response.

No wonder our flag is a rainbow.

[ Parent ]
But I am disappointed ...
If everyone who expressed shock, anger, and (yes) disappointment on this comment thread or any other in the blogosphere actually wrote out their thoughts in an e-mail to the Obama transition team, our reaction would be noted.

I am disappointed, and I wrote to say so.

But I also realize what Obama is trying to do.  I do not believe this one choice is indicative of anything else than a gesture to the evangelical community of "hey, I'm your president, too."

At the same time, I disagree with the choice, and I let my voice be heard.  And now, I'm ready to move on ...

Blogger Pam Spaulding wrote, "This selection is clearly not about 'change' - it's about making a high profile decision to give the stage over to a known homophobe; choosing Rick Warren is tantamount to asking any of the professional 'Christian' set to stand up there. There is no excuse for this; given so many leaders of the faith community that are in alignment with equality for all

more updates to the post
The Task Force and Leah McElrath Renna have weighed in on the selection.

added update 4 to the post

FROM a friend....He is wise..and a smooth writer.

Saint Paul tells me to " rejoice in hope". I remember how I felt when Bill Clinton gave us DADT and DOMA and told us it stopped the FMA and shut up and "where else can you go?"

This time, I knew that this man was a neo-liberal and a pragmatist. I knew that he would triangulate and enjoy the fact that he could court Rick Warren one minute and say the most cautiously worded statement of heterosexist support for marriage, while the next day, recording a message on NO on 8.
He and his strategists had to relish the fact that both YES and NO on 8 voters - voted overwhelmingly for him.

My words have been consistent.

I belong to the minority wing of the Democratic Debating Club. Heck, a wing would be an exaggeration. I have never expected anything on the economic front other than neocon/neolib compromises and on my rights, I expect a few sexy votes like Shepard and ENDA maybe.....but with a promise to the neocons that they won't push for DOMA or DADT repeal if they don't push for FMA.

The DLC, the Blue Dogs, the Conservatives and the Neo-Libs define this administration. The liberals are told to suck it up or else they get absolutely nothing.

L,  I love my country, but if this becomes another Clinton era, I will finally succumb to my spouse and emigrate to Canada where he and our son are citizens.

"Our Liberties We Prize and Our Rights We Will Maintain" -- Iowa state motto

We cannot embrace...
...the notion of diversity and at the same time vehemently reject a segment of America (the evangelical christians).  This would clearly signal a double standard.  I know in my heart that some day in the distant future, religious ceremonies will not be a part of our political and social intercourse.
It is very difficult for me to reconcile with R. Warren's social and political stands as well as his world view for that matter. However, I am confident that the invocation given during the inauguration will have no bearing on any policy matters and yet will still be inclusive of evangelicals as a part of our unity as Americans.
Obama should be commended for his inclusive approach to governing.  Also, his transition team in my judgement has done a stellar job, thus far.
I believe in Obama's leadership and feel that he and the team of progressive experts working with him represent the best chance for us in moving our nation and our world forward during times of serious economic woes in conjunction with armed conflicts around the globe.

Peace.

Diversity means LBGT -- Not Fundies!
Excepot of course in the backwards world you live in.

[ Parent ]
Diversity is about...
...inclusiveness for all.  It involves cultural, ethnic, gender, sexual orientation, belief systems, etc.  In short, it is about embracing individuality.  Anyhow, this is how I see it.  You most certainly may have your individual viewpoint which may be different.
Peace.

[ Parent ]
Diversity is not about enacting Leviticus into the US Code Annotated
Diversity is NOT about enshrinement of permanent second class stauts of any minority.

Attorney General Robert F Kennedy did not see diversity as including segregationalists when he enforced desegragation.

Lyndon Johnson did not see diversity as compelling him to have Jerry Falwell, then a segregationalist preacher, give his invocation.

and even William McKinley was daring at his inagural and had Cardinal Gibbons, an advocate for immigrant rights, give the benediction rather than an "America for the Americans" preacher who would have been much more acceptable to the majority of his party and to the ANglo-Saxon Protestant identified nation

And, if this is any way symbolic and the McKinley administration turns out to be more daring and more radical than the Obama administration....heavens help us.

I tell you Chica that no greater abomination exists than women denying their spirit of sisterhood and instead becoming the oppressor. -Rebeca, Universidad Complutense de Madrid

[ Parent ]
Diversity? Really?
If Obama is so committed to diversity,as you define it, why has he chosen a preacher who stands for its exact opposite?  Where are the openly gay speakers on the inaugural program?  Arguing that Obama's selection of a homobigot preacher when there are no gay voices to counterbalance him is missing your own point.

I am not interested in picking up crumbs of compassion thrown from the table of someone who considers himself my master. I want the full menu of rights.  -Archbishop Desmond Tutu

[ Parent ]
The evangelical "christians"
Have had the mic since the Reagan era, and at no point did they feel the need to be inclusive. That hate-track has been played on repeat for almost 30 years, and it's long past the point to break that shit into tiny pieces and throw them in the trash.

Fuck the evangelical "christians." They don't give a damn about democracy or the Constitution. Their goal is power over everyone else according to their interpretation of 3,000 year old folktales written by nomadic goatherds on another continent. These are the people who called Eric Rudolph a hero for killing a doctor in a women's clinic. These are the people who advocate putting us in camps, jail, or stoning us. These are the people who spread racist lies and committed mob violence during the election cycle. They are unAmerican, they are dangerous, and their violence and hatred has no place in a civilized society trying to unfuck the damage of the Bush years.

President-elect Obama ran on a platform of change and inclusion (while simultaneously condoning sexism, throwing LGBT people under the bus, and injecting his own religious twaddle into public policy discussions). They should be beneath President-elect Obama's notice. They should not be seeing their position validated by having one of their own open the Presidential inauguration.

That makes it clear enough for you?

God save ornery old queens! - kevinchi

[ Parent ]
It's not a matter of clarity...
...but a difference of opinion.  You will not get an argument from me on the fundie issue. History has shown us time and again, that unbridled religion and patriotism are the gravest dangers to humanity as they are instruments for moving ignorant masses in order to commit the most horrendous and wickedest of atrocities in the name of god, country and most ironically, of peace. Also, I believe that there cannot be any compromises in securing our LGBTQ brothers and sisters equal protection under the law.  Repealing DOMA, DADT and legislating a fully inclusive ENDA would just be a start.  It is unacceptable that any two human beings (regardless of their sexual orientation) cannot marry the person they love.  The notion that "marriage is between a man and a woman" is simply wrong. I expect Obama's administration to address these short comings at the earliest as possible.  That said, nothing happens in isolation; particularly, meaningful and lasting progress/change.  "We are not red and blue states; we are the United States of America"

Freedom of expression,
free speech, ends when your fist connects with someone else's face.

The fundies have a right to say whatever they want. They have a right to express their opinion. They do NOT have a right to impose their opinions on other people.

An atheist has a right to make fun of any religion. That is all. That atheist's rights do not extend to preventing believers from believing.

You, like Sarah Palin, appear not to understand what freedom of expression, and free speech means.

Not another anti-Christ.
What is with American politicians and their use of Pastors that espouse anti-Christ hate filled theology?

Being Inclusive goes both ways people.
Maybe we in the GLBT community need to have a reality check given to us. Sure we have been beaten up and beaten down and some of it we damn well did to ourselves.

If Obama is making this a inclusive inauguration he is trying to do just that. The same way he held out the olive branch on election night trying to get this country to HEAL. Thats right, heal. It is not going to be easy and there are a lot of people here with long memories and short tempers that may complain to high heaven to get my self kicked off this blog but I say that in order to heal inclusiveness is just that....

EVERYBODY!!!

Black, white, red, brown, Christian, Wiccan, Pagan, Jew, Muslim, Atheist, short fat, tall, crippled, it makes not difference that everyone is and is going to remain different in thought word and deed.

Get over it and carry on because if you don't start NOW no one will have any rights in this country and if you think I am wrong, then just laugh, kick me out and then see what happens if this prolonged war of culture cannot have some common ground somewhere.

Typical Railroader-Tired, Broke, Hungry, Sick, and Mad

Inclusive
This is not about being "inclusive".  Nor is it about "diversity".

It is about EQUALITY!

As a 70 year old lesbian, as someone who has lived through both good and bad times, I see this about being accorded full rights of CITIZENSHIP.

Warren has every right not to consecrate our unions in his church.  He does not have the right to deny us equality based on his Holy Book.

As far as I know I still live in a Secular Democratic Republic.  I pay taxes, vote, and have been a productive member of the various communities I've lived in.  I've either been hidden, or not accorded the same rights as other citizens.  Quite often this bias was/is based on religious prejudice.  I've been violated and beaten, yet reported nothing  --  it would have been to no avail.

So, bowing down to this bigot is NOT about inclusiveness or diversity  --  after all, if he had his way, he would do away with me.

I am not required to abet in my own destruction.

This is not a theological argument.  It is not about a "disagreement" under the "big tent"   ---   it is about confronting someone who would impose his religious values on ME.  Someone who wants me back in the closet  --  or gone.

How do I "embrace" that?

[ Parent ]
You don't bow down to humans, sister

1. It 'aint worth it because extreme left people are just as hard headed as extreme right.
and
2. I am too damn tired from working the above job to mess with it beyond this point.

The crux of the fundi argument is that we queers want them shut up and that we are going to take their rights away. Most of the comments on this issue lends way too much support for that crap. Obama asking this homophobic ass wipe to open the inaguration is something I grudgingly agree with.

Allow me to express a contrary opinion
Dear ones,

I do not like this any more than you do but I grasp the macropolitics behind it.  Please bear with me.

Whether we like it or not, Rick Warren is kind of like the new Billy Graham and I mean that in a positive way, in terms of Graham's role as a "national preacher".  Some of more secular, more lefty, queerer types are probably thinking "What the hell do we need a national preacher for?"  We don't, but face it, a good number of Americans are evangelical to some extent.  Obama is coopting the religious right here.  Trust me on this.

Warren is considered a lefty by the religious right even though as had been noted he's with 'em on the hot button issues.  Check out "Worldview Weekend"---a horrible site and program that teachers right-wing Christofascists how to be politically correct---and the Rick Warren criticism tumbles down like Niagra Falls.  See, his particular brand of evangelism is called "The Emerging (or "Emergent")Church" and the far right hates it.  It is more process oriented not doctrinaire, and emphasizes even contemplative prayer which the RRs think is Buddhism.

No doubt the RRs are as upset as we are about this, no, more so, because they hate Obama so much and Warren's participation helps Obama.

The fact this is going to happen helps the queer left and everybody else on the left because since Obama is doing this he has to give us something substantiative.  I'd rather have an end to Don't Ask Don't Tell than an inaguration speaker myself.

BTW Obama is being advised by Gene Robinson.  If a Warren-Robinson meeting is arranged (and it probably will be at background inagural events) we come out ahead because the PR from that is something money can't buy.

Keep up the outrage but keep hope alive too.  This is all part of the plan.  If Peter LaBarbera was reading this, trust me, he's pissed at Warren for agreeing to do it and so are all the other Christofascists.

OK, dogpile on me now, LOL.

WE DON'T NEED A "NEW BILLY GRAHAM"
The old one (and his 'phobe son) are bad enough!

OH, well now I see....
Gene Robinson couldn't give the invocation and not because he's gay but because everyone knows that we Episcopalians are not really christians.

I'm sorry but I have heard ALL of the cloak and dagger crap ad nauseum. From Chris Matthews, Rachel Maddow and their MSNBC retinue, Air America to New Republic. The progressives can delude themselves all they want. They can accept Newton's Law but not Occam's Razor?

I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence, or insanity to anyone, but they've always worked for me. Hunter S.

Warren: 'God puts government on earth to punish evildoers'
Warren on Hannity & Colmes saying that he Bible says that God puts government on earth to punish evildoers. I'm not sh*tting you. (Think Progress):

HANNITY: Can you talk to rogue dictators? Ahmadinejad denies the Holocaust, wants to wipe Israel off the map, is seeking nuclear weapons.

   WARREN: Yes.

HANNITY: I think we need to take him out.

   WARREN: Yes.

HANNITY: Am I advocating something dark, evil or something righteous?

WARREN: Well, actually, the Bible says that evil cannot be negotiated with. It has to just be stopped. And I believe...

   HANNITY: By force?

WARREN: Well, if necessary. In fact, that is the legitimate role of government. The Bible says that God puts government on earth to punish evildoers. Not good-doers. Evildoers.

HANNITY: I'm just gotten, thanks to my wife, who you know, you know, been reading the Old Testament. Because as a good Catholic growing up, I studied more the New Testament.

   WARREN: Just ignored that part.

HANNITY: I ignored the Old Testament. But what about King David? What about the - all the battles, all the conflict, you know, going back - - you know, Abraham - Adam and Eve and their children, going forward?

WARREN: The point is, there are some things worth dying for. There's no doubt about that. And I would die for my family. I would die for my freedom. I would die for this country.

HANNITY: If somebody broke into your house, you would be justified to kill them?

WARREN: I would be justified to protect my family. Absolutely.

HANNITY: And if it took killing them?

   WARREN: Absolutely.

HANNITY: But it's not murder at that point?

WARREN: No. Murder is not self-defense.

reaction from Equality California - with petition

"It is appalling that President-elect Barack Obama would invite California Pastor Rev. Rick Warren, an ardent supporter of Prop 8 and someone who is opposed to the equality of LGBT Americans, to give the invocation at his inauguration.  It is a slap in the face to the millions of LGBT Americans who supported his historic candidacy.  Would President-Elect Obama invite someone to give the invocation who supported eliminating the civil rights of a minority other than the LGBT community?  Of course he wouldn't!

"President-elect Obama should immediately rescind this invitation.  It would be impossible for any self-respecting LGBT person to be expected to participate in the inauguration where a vocal opponent of our equality is given such a prominent role."

EQCA is asking its members to sign the following petition to President-elect Barack Obama at www.eqca.org/takeaction:

Dear President-Elect Obama:

We the undersigned demand that you revoke the invitation of California Pastor Rev. Rick Warren due to his opposition to equality for LGBT Americans and his active support of Proposition 8 which eliminated the right of same-sex couples to civil marriage in California and put discrimination into the California Constitution.

EQCA works to achieve equality and secure legal protections for LGBT people. To improve the lives of LGBT Californians, EQCA sponsors legislation and coordinates efforts to ensure its passage, lobbies legislators and other policy makers, builds coalitions, develops community strength and empowers individuals and other organizations to engage in the political process.  www.eqca.org

AND a new Join the Impact Idea...

What will you write on your postcard???

SEND OBAMA A POSTCARD FOR EQUALITY!

UPDATE: This must be working. Obama's transition office has stopped accepting postcards. They ask for #10 envelopes only. We won't go away that easily. Put your postcard in a #10 envelope and send it anyway. Let's keep this going until the new year.

Our friends at LGBTQ Civil Rights Front have come up with a brilliant way for us to ensure that LGBTQ issues aren't forgotten as President-elect Obama makes his transition into the White House.

Their idea: buy a postcard from your home town, include a handwritten message, and mail it to Obama's Presidential Transition Office.

Put your postcard in a #10 envelope and mail it to...

President-elect Barack Obama
Presidential Transition Office
Kluczynski Federal Building
230 S. Dearborn St., 38th Floor
Chicago, IL 60604

Keep up the momentum! Get the suggested message and transition office mailing address here. Then post a photo of you and your card here!

I'll do better than a postcard to the transition team office
I'll walk it over to Maya's house while the family is here on vacation. Think that would get his attention?

You'd be considered a protest and directed to the "Preapproved" and designated "Free Speech" areas I am sure the Secret Service has set up.

Actually, no.
Actually, no. I just believe the evil inside is more important than an evil out. We can fight against Rick Warren and fight against the pathetic race relations in the gay community.

I wasn't.
This article is getting a lot of views/comments so I decided to raise a very important issue. In addition to protesting against Warren, we can also try emptying out our dirty laundry.

Cool
Sorry about that. Everyone here keeps talking as if the gay community is a focused and unified group. We're far from it.

Response
I think it'd be a great response to hear about 10,000 air horns going off at the same time while Warren is at the podium.

As far as Warren being picked in the first place, all I have to say is "same shit, different day".

Yes, I like the AIR HORNS...a lot!!

Humming for Gay Rights
I'll be on the National Mall on Inauguration Day, and would be happy to lead the crowd in humming the tune of "I Am What I Am" during Warren's entire prayer-thingy.

America's Religion is Ignorance
Warren is a perfect example of the problem with "christian" pastors who irresponsibly use a bully pulpit. He shows a complete lack of education and disregard for facts. Did you see the video interview he did with Belief Net? He bumbles along in a Palin-esque fashion reaffirming the anti-gay talking points.

He insists that he has "gay friends," and has even "eaten dinner in gay homes." My mother has gay family members, but she is still homophobic. Just because gay people tolerate his homophobic ass, does not make him any less of a bigot.  How many times must we explain this?

Obama just accessed the millions in orange county, ca money that Warren's church represents. Sold out.

maybe these "gay friends"
Are in the same imaginary friend club as Sarah Palin's personal homo.

Makes him sound so savior like eh?
Since he equated gay and lesbian relationships to incest and child molesting, he still has broken bread like Jesus did with the lepers.

Rick Warren invocation (e-mail subject)
No.

Not him.

His position against the LGBT community is anathema to what I believe.

I support the free speech clause of the first amendment.  I am a retired Army veteran who spent a tour of duty in combat.  I will defend to the death his right to say that my changing my gender from male to female is sick/twisted/ungodly/whatever.  I will defend his right to say it as loudly as he wants.

But his comments on GLBT rights show me he believes that HIS free speech would be abridged if what he says does not go.  So in his view, he and others who believe as he does have the 'freedom of speech' to deny me employment and accommodation solely because I changed my gender, and that that 'freedom of speech' is stifled if they can't reject me solely on that basis.

His selection to deliver the invocation seems to portend that in this coming administration, what I am will count for more than who I am.

Rick Warren delivering the invocation sends a bad message, never mind the rosy, self-absolving talking points the transition team issued.

No.

Sincerely;

Karen J. Savage

ANOTHER DESPICABLE CHOICE
Obviously the choice of Rick Warren sends a very strong signal that Obama isn't what so many people thought he was when we voted for him.

For the time being, he's the president we have. While I think he's better than the alternative, I have to question now how MUCH better.

Or, was this a choice by one of his very Christian followers?

Guess this puts to bed the old lie about him being a Muslim.

inauguration
My partner wanted to rent out our apartment for the week. I didn't because I wanted to go to the Mall for the inauguration. I didn't care about the cold, or the long wait for metro, or watching on monitors if we could see anything. I just wanted to be there, part of that historic crowd.

We fell asleep elated on November 4th, right after seeing the graphic on the TV that we had brought into the bedroom for the night, the only time we've ever done that. We didn't make it to the speech in Grant Park, or even seeing the Obamas come out in their coordinated outfits. We remarked on how exciting it was to live through that moment, and laughed at how we didn't go anywhere to celebrate and would always remember that we were in our bed when we heard the results of the election.

And then in the morning, logging on to check news, and seeing that it looked like Prop 8 had failed. We were shocked. My partner is from California. "We really can't get married now?" she kept asking me. That settled whether we'd get married on Cape Cod or in a spot she loves in northern California. At least for now - we're hoping the court overturns the proposition as a constitutional revision and we can revisit which coast is the better place to marry.

I think we'll be skipping the inauguration though. This doesn't hurt the same way Prop 8's passage did, I must say. Some losses in this fight hurt more than others. But my faith in Obama isn't too strong right now. I'd hoped he was being politically expedient with his triangulation during the campaign, and that a constitutional law professor would know better and perhaps regret the "God is in the mix" crap as reason to deny us civil rights. I believe that Obama will be much, much better than Bush was or McCain would have been, and I think I will be much happier about the direction the country starts to go a month from now. But I'm still disappointed, enough so not to want to attend his party.

I'm certain that you'll receive e-mails on this topic that are lengthy, so I'll be brief.

I simply cannot adequately express my disappointment upon learning that Rick Warren will be delivering the invocation at President-elect Obama's inauguration.

President-elect Barack Obama's decision to have evangelical pastor Rick Warren deliver the inauguration invocation is:

Shrewd politics    58%   20166
Disappointing      42%   14606

how about both?
The two aren't necessarily mutually exclusive.

why is anyone surprised by this?
I've been saying this for about a year since the Donnie McClurkin controversy--I don't believe for a second that Obama is going to offer us anything but kind words. He is ON THE RECORD as opposing gay marriage so what else would you expect of this man? Everyone has been too busy sucking his d--- for the past year to realize he'll throw us under the bus so long as it saves his political arse.
