The Christian Civic League of Maine's Mike Hein calls Pam's House Blend:
"a leading source of radical homosexual propaganda, anti-Christian bigotry, and radical transgender advocacy."

He is "praying that Pam Spaulding will "turn away from her wicked and sinful promotion of homosexual behavior." (CCLM's web site, 10/15/07)

Ex-gay "Christian" activist James Hartline on Pam:
"I have been mocked over and over again by ungodly and unprincipled anti-christian lesbians."
(from "Six Years In Sodom: From The Journal Of James Hartline," 9/4/2006, written from the "homosexual stronghold" of Hillcrest in San Diego).

"Pam is a 'twisted lesbian sister' and an 'embittered lesbian' of the 'self-imposed gutteral experiences of the gay ghetto.'" -- 9/5/2008

Peter LaBarbera of Americans for Truth Against Homosexuality heartily endorses the Blend, calling Pam:

A "vicious anti-Christian lesbian activist."
(Concerned Women for America's radio show [9:15], 1/25/07)

"A nutty lesbian blogger."
(MassResistance radio show [16:25], 2/3/07)

Pam's House Blend always seems to find these sick f*cks. The area of the country she is in? The home state of her wife? I know, they are everywhere. Pam just does such a great job of bringing them out into the light.

Mike Rogers makes mincemeat out of Warren defender's argument on Hardball

by: Pam Spaulding

Tue Dec 23, 2008 at 01:22:23 AM EST

On Hardball Monday night (hosted tonight by the insufferable Mike Barnicle, who believes all the LGBTs and allies who are mad at Rick Warren live in only five cities), friend of the Blend Mike Rogers of PageOneQ.com and BlogActive took the debate chair against the Rev. Eugene Rivers and shot down the feeble defense of Warren. Rivers unconvincingly attempted to say that Warren isn't a divisive figure and that LGBT anger is a "pseudo-controversy."

Mike Rogers disarmed Rivers by citing the fact that the Saddleback Church web site removed its anti-gay language as a result of the controversy, and thus it was an admission by Warren that he was in fact affected by the protests by those "angry gays" and allies who objected to his selection to deliver the invocation at the Obama inauguration. Beautiful.

I love Digby's take on it. It's after the jump, along with a partial transcript of the Hardball segment.

Pam Spaulding :: Mike Rogers makes mincemeat out of Warren defender's argument on Hardball
Rogers took a very unusual tack and said that Rivers coming on the show to defend Warren shows how powerful the gay community is and that he was very happy to see Warren changing his web site just today (to hide his more outrageously homophobic content.). He characterized this as a big victory for gay rights. ("I compliment Rick Warren on seeing the error of his ways and changing his web site.") Rivers was agitated by this and seemed to be frustrated that the dialog wasn't taking the predicted path, rather sarcastically saying things like "well we're all happy now, I guess."

But the really interesting reaction came about when Rogers suggested that if Warren is to be seen as a man who builds bridges between the right and the left that he should quietly and without any kind of fanfare meet with leaders of the gay community and listen to their concerns. Rivers reacted very badly.

Rogers: What I would like to see, and I'd like to hear you agree with it, is that Rick Warren convenes and sits down, again, behind closed doors, not on the stage trotting everybody out, but sits down with the leadership of our community, the gay leadership, and says "I'd like to build a bridge." Sit down with the Human Rights Campaign, sit down with National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Religious Roundtable, and show me that your speech is really about reaching out and that it's really about uniting America. And if you can't sit down and have those meetings with the community, then I think that shows what you're really about.

Rivers:(upset) No, no, no. Mr Rogers, listen ...

Rogers: sure

Rivers: It would be presumptuous of you to suggest that if Reverend Warren doesn't sit down with your particular crew, that's an act of bad faith. That's a political trick...

Rogers: If Warren is a so-called leader in the evangelical movement who represents the evangelical movement on a national level, certainly it's appropriate for him to sit down with the national leaders of the gay and lesbian movement...

Do I hear the sound of a body slam in the arena? EMS for Rev. Rivers, please.

There's no political trick, Rev. Rivers. If Rick Warren is serious about defending his reputation and political/religious views about LGBTs, why wouldn't he want to sit down with LGBT organizations and smooth out the "misunderstandings" about his views? Is that a problem for him? Certainly as a friend of Barack Obama, he would want to take the heat off of his buddy and meet, maybe even break bread with members of the community in the spirit of Christian fellowship that Warren says he represents.

And if you want to see Warren in full damage control mode, take a look at the e-blast that went out to his supporters today.

Dear Saddleback Family:

Merry Christmas!

In this week's News & Views, Pastor Rick responds to some of your recent questions, and shares his views on topics that have thrust him and Saddleback Church into the news media.

In the first video segment, Pastor Rick restates his long-held views on the Biblical definition of marriage, clarifies some possible misconceptions, and offers his thoughts on why that definition should not be changed.

In the second video segment, Pastor Rick discusses civil rights, and how no American should ever be discriminated against because of their beliefs. Free speech should be free speech for everybody, even if they disagree with our views. As Christians, it is always up to us to champion civility.

Also in this segment, he discusses why he has accepted President-Elect Barack Obama's invitation to provide the inaugural invocation.

In the third video segment, Pastor Rick discusses how he will respond to the many attacks and accusations appearing in the news, and why it is vitally important to return love for hate, to overcome evil with good, and to keep meeting the practical needs of those around us.

He closes with a word of encouragement to all Saddleback members, and a description of the new Purpose Driven Connection network that launches next month.

You can see all of his videos here. Clearly America's New Pastor is on the ropes if he's having to do PR restitching of his web site and this desperate messaging.

Just to save you some time, in the first video he blames the media for not getting his views right. I'm not sure what about his multiple statements condemning gays -- along with a web site that said unrepentant gays weren't welcome to worship was misconstrued. He also outright denies that he compared gay relationships to incest and pedophilia, and that his Beliefnet interview was "misunderstood."

Warren also goes on to say over and over (he looks quite defensive in the video) that he believes that marriage should be defined as one man-one woman, and then continues to conflate religious marriage and civil marriage. Do these people just not get it?! It's all they have to cling to.

BTW, Warren also blames talk radio and bloggers for stirring up conflict and "need to get a life." Hey bub, it's my life and relationship you're helping to devalue in the name of "freedom of speech" by helping to strip 18,000 same-sex couples of their marriages in California. I think our anger is justified; your weasely attempt to reframe your position isn't working. Perhaps you should sit down with members of the LGBT community and make your case directly to us.

Live in only 5 cities?
I'm guessing Carmel, Indiana, isn't one of them!

Something to do about Warren
Folks:

Finally something to do beside scream -

Please got to Turn Back Hate and sign the petition protesting President-elect Barack Obama's decision to invite Pastor Rick Warren to do the Invocation at his Inauguration.

the website angle
I think, and this is just my guess, that making a big deal of the website change is more about lighting a fire under the evangelicals to start demanding some answers out of their leader.

The fact that he's changing his website and launching a campaign within his own church to spin the issue suggests he's got some problems.  I don't expect him, or anyone like him, to answer to the gays.

But in his conversation as "reported" with Melissa Etheridge, and now to a lesser extent, in his own emails with his supporters -- he is saying that he said "stupid" things, things that were misconstrued, misquoted, or taken out of context.  Well Rick, what specifically are these things?  What specifically would you like to clarify, restate, or recant?

The website change goes to the heart of the matter.  Changing a church policy, or even just hiding/scrubbing it from the website is a big, big deal in any church.  Policy changes like that don't just happen overnight, if it is really a policy change at all.  The point is, he's not going to answer that question for us -- but if we keep tossing it out there, making a point to bring it up over and over again, eventually people he does have to answer to are going to start demanding an answer.

...and if we can all take a break from the free donuts and non-stop sex, that will be a fun conversation to watch.

It's Just a Surface Cleaning
My guess is the Saddleback's Church has not changed it's policy regarding allowing LGBT's (unrepentant or otherwise) to join their church. They just took their policy out of the public eye. In fact, to change policy that way, it would probably have to be voted on either by the majority of the members or at least by some counsel or group such as the deacons, etc. One way to prove their change of heart is to get an LGBT person or family try to openly join the church and see what happens. Imagine the gasps of horror in the congregation! In reality I would not recommend this. It would not be fun for the LGBT person or family to have all that homophobia so blantantly directed at them.
That being said, just getting them to do the scrubbing online shows that they get the idea they may be looking bad to the general public. They are feeling the heat whether they admit it or not and are having to scramble to do damage control. Mike is right there.

I respect Mike
but I think he made too much of a victory of Warren changing his G*D DAMN website,
so he hates us behind our back now, instead of to our face.
same sh*t different decade, different century, different millenium

"race, taste. and History finally overcome....and you ain't there"
by Tony Kushner

I interpreted a little differently...
It almost seemed to me like he highlighted the website change to make a point, not so much to grandstand.  He was calling them on their shit.

Sorry
I just posted exactly what you said but wordier.

I'm sorry.

What a day, what a day for an auto-da-fe

Power & Control
The real win comes in seeing people living a life that is joyous, happy and free with dignity whether it is one of your own or for others.

Rick Warren is so searching for the limelight and one of the major ways he does it is by demonizing The Gays.

Anita Bryant had the same modus operandi as Rick Warren has today and look at where it led AB to.......... knowwheresville with a destroyed career, marriage and life.  All of her christianist supporters in 1978 and beyond long ago deserted her.

Back to RW: He is a loser and oppertunist just like AB was. I am glad that he has revised his website, but until he changes his message and real beliefs and outreach programs to be inclusive and loving of GLBTQ he is nothing.

The Jesus RW preaches about was all about love and compassion and inclusion.  JC warned the pious of the day to get real and get with the program. RW and his ilk would be well served if they truely followed the same message.

I am willing to bet that Rick Warren will not...
...sit down with LGBT leaders behind closed doors.  He has been publicly called out on his homophobia and is now trying to act as if it never existed.  Just like Chicken Choker Peter LaBarbera and his side kick Bam-Bam, they will never appear in a debate with LGBT leaders.

The need for the comment Get a Life is so telling.  He doesn't like being called out on his Homophobia.  I am willing to bet that Daddy D. of Focus on the Anus would be hiding in his shell.

They will hide and soke the sheeple for as much cash as they can.

I wish more in the MSM would call out these christianists on the bigotry and homophobia.

If I make sense? it was quite by accident.

Simply awesome
Put Rogers up against someone like Tony Perkins or Mike Huckabee and watching him level them.

I like the way he articulated the points and led the conversation rathr than having the conversation lead him.

Mike Rogers is our leader
Very articulate.  Looks businesslike and no nonsense.  Clear and to the point.  Not hard to understand as can be Barney Frank.

Same-Sex Marriage is good for the economy.

Will Warren change?
In Warren's desperate lurch toward the center, he and his supporters are forgetting one thing: leverage.

Without homobigotry, mandatory childbirth,  and women on the bottom, Warren becomes the Methodist minister down the street. He's just another guy. If Warren puts a mute in the crazyness, The Base will stop saying he's America's New Pastor and Republican Party honchos won't return his calls.

If he sticks to the gospel according to Pat Robertson, even the MSM will show him up for the loon he is.

If The Fierce Advocate really is playing a deep game and lifting Warren up higher so he can fall farther, I believe he just might be wily enough to fix this country.

I'm still not gonna trust That One. Show me the executive orders and signed legislation, then I'll trust him for a couple of seconds.

Even if Obama is just one more disappointing Democrat, Warren is way out of his depth.

What a day, what a day for an auto-da-fe

oh please
I'm getting tired of prominent religious people making a superficial show of meeting with someone gay, then either not really talking to them, or ignoring them altogether.

But when the media is around, media that is FRIENDLY to them, they are balls out demonizing gay people EXACTLY the way Warren did to Ann Curry and others.

He has no intention of taking anything back, just hiding it all until the heats off.
Rogers was VERY wrong about the website or policy concerning Saddleback, that was NO victory whatsoever.

Warren really wants to do the invocation and he'll do whatever cosmetic change to not have that invitation at risk, that's all.
It's all about HIM.

He doesn't have to care about gay people. The ones who don't have AIDS or are in some vulnerable situation so he can swoop in like some angel and make a big show of being a savior.
The healthy gay people with robust and enduring relationships who have children...well, that would just totally mess up HIS idea of what gay people SHOULD be.
And in what position he wants to KEEP them.

I"m sick to death too, of everyone who argues against marriage equality loading it with so much conjecture.
Disregarding the success of it in MA and Canada and Spain.
Ignoring how serious gay people are to the cause of marriage. I'm sick of the misrepresentation of the motives to marry.

Why are their arguments a spurious fantasy, rather than discussed in the reality it is?
They argue that this is simply a difference of opinion and not life or death....not about the continuance of abuse against a minority under constant siege and scrutiny?

They sound as if there is a measure of justification for this abuse, and rationalizing it to the point of hypocrisy and absurdity doesn't faze.

Homosexuality has been around longer than anyone's religion, and certainly is far more universal than any of them.
Intelligent people should look at that fact alone to tell them that it can't be the subject of a RELIGIOUS argument whatsoever.
Why not assume that it's the religious belief regarding homosexuality that's wrong, and move on from there?

As we've moved on from all kinds of religious repression of human advancement in so many other areas.
If the Rick Warrens and Rev. Rivers of the world dont like being called haters.
No it's not hateful in their view to mock equality and fairness.
But they certainly are cowards to regress social progress as if it's benefits are impossible for and among gay people alone.
