The Christian Civic League of Maine's Mike Hein calls Pam's House Blend:
"a leading source of radical homosexual propaganda, anti-Christian bigotry, and radical transgender advocacy."

He is "praying that Pam Spaulding will "turn away from her wicked and sinful promotion of homosexual behavior." (CCLM's web site, 10/15/07)

Ex-gay "Christian" activist James Hartline on Pam:
"I have been mocked over and over again by ungodly and unprincipled anti-christian lesbians."
(from "Six Years In Sodom: From The Journal Of James Hartline," 9/4/2006, written from the "homosexual stronghold" of Hillcrest in San Diego).

"Pam is a 'twisted lesbian sister' and an 'embittered lesbian' of the 'self-imposed gutteral experiences of the gay ghetto.'" -- 9/5/2008

Peter LaBarbera of Americans for Truth Against Homosexuality heartily endorses the Blend, calling Pam:

A "vicious anti-Christian lesbian activist."
(Concerned Women for America's radio show [9:15], 1/25/07)

"A nutty lesbian blogger."
(MassResistance radio show [16:25], 2/3/07)

Pam's House Blend always seems to find these sick f*cks. The area of the country she is in? The home state of her wife? I know, they are everywhere. Pam just does such a great job of bringing them out into the light.

AFA Michigan's Gary Glenn Up To The Usual Fear Tactics -- This Time In Kalamazoo

by: Autumn Sandeen

Sun Jan 04, 2009 at 17:30:00 PM EST

I get angry reading about the same tactics over and over again against LGBT  civil rights legislation - You just can't sell me that this isn't about hate when wereNo Or Both Gender Male Female Restroom Sign - Gender Neutral Restroom Bathroom Sign seeing these same, hateful "Christian" mistruths and fear tactics used over and over again. When do we develop some good answers to his and his "Christian" peers' lies and fear tactics?

From Pride Source:

KALAMAZOO-Less than one month after the City of Kalamazoo Commission voted 7-0 to adopt an expanded human rights ordinance that makes it illegal to use sexual orientation to discriminate in housing, public accommodations and employment, petitions were filed Dec. 31 to repeal it.

City Clerk Scott Borling said that the circulators of the petition had filed over 1,600 signatures. If at least 1,273 of them are valid city registered voters, it will cause the new ordinance to be suspended immediately.

The city charter states that valid referendum petitions require the commissioners to take up the challenge at the next regular meeting which will be held on Jan. 26. They will either repeal the ordinance or place it on a ballot for city voters to decide. The certification process began Friday and the outcome should be known sometime this week.

The American Family Association of Michigan, led by Gary Glenn and Kalamazoo County Treasurer Mary Balkema, a former City Commissioner, submitted the petitions. Glenn has been quoted in local press claiming that the new ordinance would force some people to base decisions that run counter to their religious convictions, as well as possibly violate the privacy of women and children.

Glenn has led every challenge across the state in the past decade to defeat city ordinances that include sexual orientation and gender identity. A circulated flyer of talking points stated, "This ordinance violates the First Amendment rights of religion and free speech of those who oppose cross-dressing and homosexual behavior."

Glenn has used scare tactics in other ballot initiatives. For example, the title of one of the petition circulator scripts reads, "IS THERE A MAN IN YOUR DAUGHTER'S BATHROOM?" ...

First I rant about a lack of an effective counter argument to the same, tired arguments of the conservative "Christians," and then I sigh. *Sigh.*

This would be too easy I'm sure, but...
The city charter states that valid referendum petitions require the commissioners to take up the challenge at the next regular meeting which will be held on Jan. 26. They will either repeal the ordinance or place it on a ballot for city voters to decide.
Is there anything preventing the Commission from repealing the ordinance and then immediately passing an identical ordinance?

I know - there's bound to be something to prevent a solution that simple, but I'm getting more and more tired of these fascist christianists.

At the very least that sort of sleight-of-hand would make the fascist christianists expend resources to re-gather signatures.

reelection concerns.
i'm sure re-election concerns would hamper your plan.  and in all honesty, i'm not sure any city council should be pulling fast ones on the electorate as you describe.

the kalamazoo story is just another iteration of what has happened in umpteen michigan towns: a fair-minded city council is elected by the only voters paying attention: the fair minded minority.  they pass a fair-minded ordinance.  the sleepy knuckle-dragging majority wakes up long enough to sign a petition, and the fair-minded ordinance is toast.  michigan: the great hate state.  may i never have to live there again. (no, i harbor no bitterness...)

The best response I've heard...
...was when Dan Savage slapped down the lying Tony Perkins with "I hope you don't pray to Jesus with that mouth," which left Perkins speechless. In short, we need to consistently call out their "mistruths" for what they are: damned lies, not faith-based disagreements or any other wimpy euphemism. Lies, the kind that their vindictive god would send them to hell for.

collecting arguments
First I rant about a lack of an effective counter argument to the same, tired arguments of the conservative "Christians,"...

I've started collecting such arguments here (see also here). Please feel free to add any further arguments in need of refutation (it's a wiki site).

Can we please
put some resources into winning this?

If this were a city in California, we'd be pouring in all kinds of money. We cannot give them another win. We need to draw the line, in Kalamazoo and in Massachusetts.

Here's the local organization working to protect the ordinance
The PrideSource article which Autumn quoted mentions that the Kalamazoo Alliance for Equality was instrumental in getting the ordinance passed.

Their website mentions that they are looking for supporters to show up at their next meeting (Tuesday, Jan 6th), so perhaps if anyone lives in the Kalamazoo area they might find the time to attend.

If you want allies, you have to be an ally.

The PA branch of AFA
has invaded Allegheny County, where the county commission is holding a hearing on the passage of a law to protect LGBT citizens from discrimination.  And we're already hearing the same litany of tired old lies--hordes of cross-dressers invading women's rooms, rampant child molestation, etc., etc.  It never stops, and never will, until somehow, somewhere, someday one of them is held accountable and fined or imprisoned for their palpable fraud.

This is why
I've come to think that there should be laws against lying in public. You can get away with once by saying, "I didn't know." Any time after that, your ass is toast.

We also have
the city of Pittsburgh itself, which has had a gay rights ordinance on the books for 19 years now.  I've been hearing stories for years about people in the surrounding county who have met egregious discrimination and had no legal recourse at all.

With the city's own experience right under their noses, members of county council will be hard pressed to credit any of the right wing's baloney.

We've been here already
Earlier in this decade (before Michigan passed its marriage protection amendment in 2004) the Kalamazoo city council passed some kind of equal protection ordinance involving sexual orientation -- which makes me wonder how this one differs from the earlier one. Perhaps I don't remember it right and the previous one was to prevent gays from being included in an equal rights law and didn't come through the council. But I do remember this: a friend and I drove from the Detroit area to spend a day in Kalamazoo campaigning for the gay cause. We went house-to-house in one small area passing out leaflets and talking to voters. I also remember the gay side won.

I'm confident Kalamazoo will give Gary Glenn the boot again. Alas, it will suck up time and money that Michigan desperately needs for thousands of other things, not to mention giving my state another black eye when it is already hanging from the ropes.

Yes we have
The battle you are talking about was over same sex benefits for city workers.  And yes the citizens here voted to keep the benefits.  We already had a non discrimination in housing that hadn't been challenged.  Not sure why it was needed in this bill.

Forgot to mention
I live in Kalamazoo County and have never heard of Kalamazoo Alliance for Equality.  Um, where were they when we fought for equal housing?

They only formed in 2006,
so presumably they didn't exist then.

I'm curious, why is the knee-jerk reaction to shit on our advocacy organizations like you just did?  Why is it ok not to check the facts first?  What a terribly destructive habit!

And how disingenuous
to cite violation of women's privacy!  AFA, and their ilk, work against women's privacy all the time!  I agree that we should put some resources into this.  We are going to win hearts and minds in the small towns, and the small towns will add up to states.  (Oh, man, I sound a bit too much like the current administration.)

does the state of Michigan have an ENDA law?
I can only speak from MN, when we got one passed.
It took a coalition of women, labor, minorities, and LGBTs.
It doesn't seem those old allies have the strength they once had, and the coalitions themselves are frayed.

Michigan have an ENDA? Yes.
Does it include gay people? Ha! Not a chance. Same for the state hate crimes law. A state senator just killed the safe schools anti-bullying law because it mentions gay kids. The GOP controlled state senate was not up for election this year.

Gather our own petition....
to remove the entire human rights ordinance...or at least the part protecting religious expression.

Let's see how they respond to that...they don't think anyone should have "special rights." So let's remove their special rights, and see what response they try to come up with.

Yes!
Why is this such a good idea?
