This may be the beginning of some new fascist trend out there. Prop 8 has given the leaders of the fag bashing clubs...aka churches...the green light to start getting more proactive against us. Although this pig event may have been a bit over the top in the average person's mind, it is a warning shot. I wonder which gay event is next on their list? The right wing fundy preachers need that cash flow to live their rich and famous lifestyles. To keep that cash flowing from little old blue haired ladies, watching christian networks with credit cards their kids don't have control over, they need a solid icky enemy. Fags are perfect. Especially when they can describe anything having to do with the anus. My anus generates cash flow. End of discussion.

I have mixed feelings over this...

I know what these pig sex orgies are and they need to be held on someone's farm or ranch deep in the woods.  I am a gay man and find them pretty disgusting!  It seems this event was planned to shock the fundies and add legitimacy to their hedonist cause.  I don't care what anyone does sexually but a little discretion would be called for.
Most people only get their news about gays from this type of reporting. Unfortunately, the reporting is true.  It is time for all members of the gay community to take a look at themselves and how they portray themselves.

The fundie and tightly-wound-queer rants about low-paid housekeepers sopping up gobs of human waste is quite a stretch.  Judging from the immaculate homes of many "pig players" and the want for not being hit with a major repair bill, I believe that the organizers of this event would have lined the floors with layer upon layer of plastic and other barriers, then removed the same on their own.  Expecting others to wipe up your drippy J-Lube or body fluids is rude, beyond presenting a health hazard.

The majority of major bloggers and newspeople ignored Peter's nonsense.

I think he may be angry that the event has been canceled. It means no pictures or "in-depth reports" for him. Remember Peter was the one who said that the religious right should go into detail about "homosexual anal sex" to further their cause.  Despite the cancellation, it's just another sign that Peter is digging a hole deeper than that of Janet (Obama is NOT a natural citizen, the election of 2008 is a conspiracy) Folger Porter.

I do have to say though that the name "Obama Inauguration Pig Sex Orgy" kinda leaves me a bit fluttered.

I disagree though with any inference that the shutting down of this event will lead to gays being gradually pushed away from public view.

Somehow I don't think that the religious right can build a credible argument for shutting us out of public events (like the White House Easter Egg Roll for example) on the strength of calling attention to a fetish event.

I am not going to decry this kind of event

Peter’s attack does two things at once:

1. stereotypes all queers as people who would go to this kind of event; and
2. shames and vilifies the people that do.

As a queer person I find his attack insulting, and I agree that some people, exposed to his attack but not to a reasoned rebuttal, will take away a negative impression of queer folk generally.  Some will even, as you suggest, use it as a way to push queer people further into the closet.

As much as I understand your frustration with being attacked this way, however, I won’t criticize the people who would choose to organize or attend this kind of event.  So long as participation is voluntary and there is no harm to anyone — and the comments regarding cleanup here suggest to me that there isn’t — then the same moral principles that protect my right to have much more plain-vanilla consensual sex in my own home apply to them as well.

So while it frustrates me to be attacked this way, I choose to respond by pointing out:

1. how wrong it is to stereotype;
2. that people have a right to do this kind of thing, even if I don’t like it; and
3. that anyone who doesn’t want to participate — like me — is perfectly free to not go.

It’ll take more effort and dialogue to fight this kind of attack in this way than it would to push the fetishists into the closet.  I think it’s worth it.  You’re welcome to disagree, of course.

It'd be nice to hear from the conference's organizers here

I've been to my share of leather conferences & I have to say that the participants & those responsible tend to clean up after themselves quite well, as a point of honor, "pig sex" appellation notwithstanding. Otherwise-for one thing-no hotel would ever book us twice. This event may have had other plans, of course, but it seems unlikely. Leather events & people endure a lot of pressure to be doubly ghettoized, as it were-heaven forbid we should contaminate the townsfolk & scare the horses with raw sexual displays!
The odds that there would be gooey orgies on the Doubletree's banquet tables are slim, people. Let's not fall into the trap of feeling we have to look "respectable" in order to appease the wingnuts. They're more obssessed with teh ghey buttsecks than we could ever be, & no amount of shaping up & flying right is going to convince them that we're anything but demonic. We may as well enjoy ourselves!

I'm for individual liberty.  But let's not hand our enemies the very weapons they can use against us.

Yet I can't accept that we should measure the actions of LGBT individuals according to how likeable they make LGBT people collectively appear to the prejudiced and superstitious.

I honestly can't bring myself to care what homophobic trolls like Labarbera think of MAL or anything else.  But I do wonder what a young gay boy just coming to awareness of what he is might think.  Is it a dream come true for him that he can have his anus tongued by a stream of strangers?  While sitting in a chair especially designed for that purpose?  In a hotel banquet hall?

What is it that "we" are fighting for?  Is it sexual freedom?  Or is it something different?

MAL was insanely irresponsible.

There could be no other outcome from this.  When we have gravely serious battles to fight, it is grossly immature (at best) for any queer organization to decide to dare fundies to shut down their publicly-advertised fetish pig orgy in a DC hotel conference room that is timed to celebrate the most historic inauguration of a president ever.  And then be upset about it!

I completely support legal sexual expression (and believe there's still some expressions which are illegal that shouldn't be), but is there really anybody who doesn't go to fetish pig orgies in hotel conference rooms who would want to use that same conference room afterwards?  If a hotel will give them the space, fine, everybody's within their rights.  But don't deliberately time it to coincide with an event that the entire world will be watching and then name your fetish pig orgy in honor of the inauguration and be surprised when people object.

The problem isn't that this is an event for gay men.  The problem is that this event crosses the line in so many ways all at once as to be mind-boggling.  MAL isn't the only fetish group in the world, straight or gay or whatever, but they are the only one with a fetish pig orgy in a DC hotel conference room next week.  Maybe there's a reason for that.

Everybody wants freedom and nobody wants responsiblity, but most people still exercise their freedoms responsibly anyway.  MAL was shut down because they were insanely irresponsible.  Have some respect for your nation and your community -- and even the damn hotel! -- and exercise your freedom of expression responsibly, please.  Is it really so much to ask to hold your fetish pig orgy on any other week of the year?

I've been saying for years

that what the LGBT community needs, every bit as much as legal equality, is a good social critic.  I have no problem with people engaging in consensual sexual activities of any kind, however extreme.  Some of my heterosexual fiends do things that would stand your hair on end.  So have I, from time to time.  But holding a "pig sex orgy" (and how does that differ from a good old-fashioned orgy? aren't orgies about excessive sex?), advertising it and daring the fundies to do something about it is just plain stupid.  Worse than that, it's willfully stupid.  And it's not possible to protect people from their own stupidity, even if they're gay.  

If you knew someone, gay or straight, who decided to plunge his hand into an open flame, then complained that it burned, what could you say to him?  My only response would be to hope that he'd learned his lesson.  There's a big difference between a purely human lapse of judgment and an intentional one.

The hotels want those rooms for the inaugural and this was a quick way to get them, I am insulted they use AIDS as a reason to deny public accomadations. You do know PWAs are protected by the People With Disability Act...which is MUCH easier to sue over than LGBT issue of equality.

The reaction of Stepfordesque LGBT folk to the IPSO (Inauguration Pig Sex Orgy) flap proves this axiom very well.  In the quest to win the acceptance of others, they are willing to chastise and stigmatise other Queers because of the sex which they choose to have.  It's painfully reminiscent of the early years of HIV/AIDS in American when Leathermen and other sub-groups were intermittently implicated by other Queermen in the emergence of the disease -- it was bullshit then, and it's bullshit now when ranting that kinky Queermen are a hindrance to LGBT equality.  Instead of running from the sex that we have, LGBT leaders need to embrace the Baskin Robbins of non-diagnosable Queer erotic interests, beginning with the vanilla.  

NEWSFLASH.... about one in nine people of every persuasion, even otherwise "clean-cut" and "str8-acting" Lesbians and Gay men and even Bible-thumping heterosexuals, get off routinely through kinky sex!

This stuff really pisses me off.  When will we learn?  As long as there are some within our community that feel the need to advertise and sell these public over-the-top fetish events as if they were civil rights demonstrations, get used to sitting in the back of the bus.  These kind of events are golden nuggets handed to The Peter and Bam Bam on a silver platter.  It plays right into the wingnut's hands, and they're laughing all the way to the bank.  If I'm appalled by this as a gay person, I can just imagine what the average straight person thinks when they see sh*t like this. Telling them we deserve equality because we're just like everyone else is a pretty tough sell when The Peter shows them this crap.

I've been out and active in the LGBT community for 20 years, and I don't know one person who goes to these type of events, yet ALL of us have to put up with The Peter aligning with these activities. Who could blame them for using this story to drive their agenda and fill their coffers?  It is stories like this that highlight the fact that within our community, we're often our own worst enemies.

I'm certainly no prude, but for God's sake, when it comes to "pig sex" can you be discreet and have a little class?

Heteros aren't fighting for their equality, we are.  We are trying to fight the commonly held belief that our relationships are just all about sex, and kinky sex at that.  That is OUR battle.  The anti-gay mantra is this:  First, being gay is a choice, a changeable behavior, and secondly, our relationships are purely sexual in nature.

We can argue all day long that these events are attended by straights as well, but let's be honest - they're marketed to gay people and attended primarily by gay people.  Have you ever seen a public ad for a hetero orgy?  There are plenty hetero orgies I'm sure, they're just discreet.  Have you ever seen an ad for an event like the one we're discussing in a mainstream paper?  No, you only see ads for events like this in the gay press.

I found it ironic that The Peter is calling on his supporters to give Hilton a hard time about that event.  It was The Peter who held his lame little AFTAH banquet last year at a Hilton-owned Embassy Suites hotel when his first choice, Holiday Inn, told him to take his hate elsewhere.  Hilton Corp. supported The Peter and stubbornly stood their ground amidst lots of calls and pressure from local LGBT activists asking them to cancel the AFTAH event.

And if so, why isn't it occurring in a privately owned club rented for sole use for the event? A large hotel is hardly a secure location. I wouldn't be surprised if most of the larger meeting rooms had good CCTV coverage. I am sorry, but I can't believe that all the leatherfolk are out enough at work to not be subject to blackmail.
