"If you're gay, lesbian, or bisexual, would you sacrifice for your trans neighbors and siblings? If you're trans, would you sacrifice for your gay, lesbian, or bisexual neighbors and siblings? It's something worth knowing about yourself and those around you."

The Christian Civic League of Maine's Mike Hein calls Pam's House Blend:
"a leading source of radical homosexual propaganda, anti-Christian bigotry, and radical transgender advocacy."

He is "praying that Pam Spaulding will "turn away from her wicked and sinful promotion of homosexual behavior." (CCLM's web site, 10/15/07)

Ex-gay "Christian" activist James Hartline on Pam:
"I have been mocked over and over again by ungodly and unprincipled anti-christian lesbians."
(from "Six Years In Sodom: From The Journal Of James Hartline," 9/4/2006, written from the "homosexual stronghold" of Hillcrest in San Diego).

"Pam is a 'twisted lesbian sister' and an 'embittered lesbian' of the 'self-imposed gutteral experiences of the gay ghetto.'" -- 9/5/2008

Peter LaBarbera of Americans for Truth Against Homosexuality heartily endorses the Blend, calling Pam:

A "vicious anti-Christian lesbian activist."
(Concerned Women for America's radio show [9:15], 1/25/07)

"A nutty lesbian blogger."
(MassResistance radio show [16:25], 2/3/07)

Pam's House Blend always seems to find these sick f*cks. The area of the country she is in? The home state of her wife? I know, they are everywhere. Pam just does such a great job of bringing them out into the light.

Why Maine Shouldn't Have Equal Marriage: $$$

by: Louise

Sat Jan 24, 2009 at 20:30:06 PM EST

I sh*t you not; that is the latest argument being put forth.

Mark my words: it's about to get louder and go national.

Pam's story from earlier this week discussed that despite multiple reports to the contrary, no one decided to pony up and sponsor a bill against the proposed marriage equality bill.

So instead, we get these grumblings from a failed GOP candidate.

From today's "Kennebec Journal":

The Maine Republican Project, a group led by 1st Congressional District primary candidate Dean Scontras, announced this week that they will work against Sen. Dennis Damon's bill to allow gay marriage in Maine.

"Among our growing membership, it seems a bit of a concern that Sen. Damon chose to introduce this legislation when Maine faces one of the worst economic climates in some time," Scontras said in a statement.

"This will simply absorb valuable legislative cycles that should be dedicated toward repairing the economic situation of so many Mainers."

The project, launched late last year, is a political action committee that "seeks to unite Republican interests."

Louise :: Why Maine Shouldn't Have Equal Marriage: $$$
Well! That makes it sound as if only bills directly affecting the economy are being worked upon this session- that this one bill would be sucking all of the life force and energy out of the entire working Legislature.

So let's see what else they're working on in Augusta to help the economy along. From same article, (which was hidden on page "B3" with the title "Making appointments palatable to the public", making this a virtual Easter egg hunt):

A bipartisan group of legislators is sponsoring a bill to avoid an Illinois-style political brawl over how to fill vacant U.S. Senate seats.

State Sen. Bill Diamond, D-Windham, is the primary sponsor of "An Act to Require a Vacancy in the Office of United States Senator to be Filled by Election."

The release of the bill in Maine comes just days before the start of the impeachment trial of Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

Diamond's bill would require Maine to hold a special election within 60 days of a Senate vacancy. As it is now, the governor has the power to fill the vacancy until the next general election.

The most recent example of a gubernatorial appointment in Maine was in 1980 when Gov. Joe Brennan appointed George Mitchell to fill a vacancy created when Ed Muskie became Secretary of State.

"We've never had any trouble in the state of Maine," Diamond said. "It's a policy question that needs to be discussed and debated by the Legislature."

STOP. WHOA. Lemme get this straight...

Illinois has a serious legal and political quagmire, so we have to waste time to make sure Maine doesn't suffer the same fate some day- and the only example of a Maine governor appointee they can come up with involves BOTH George Mitchell and Ed Muskie??

Are you fucking KIDDING me??

And look who is wasting his time on this ridiculous bit of legislation- why, it's Josh Tardy.

Josh Tardy, Josh Tardy... oh, WHY does that name sound so familiar?

Oh yes, now I remember. It was Tardy who first declared that he was going to sponsor a bill opposing Sen. Damon's marriage equality bill!

House Minority Leader Josh Tardy, R-Newport, a co-sponsor, said he agreed with those in Illinois who called for a special election.

"From my experience in Maine politics, I have no concern we'd ever have a Blagojevich-type scandal," he said. "But, at the same time, people elect the delegation to Congress and the Senate. The people should have the power."

So even though he freely admits openly that he doubts it will ever be an issue in Maine, Josh Tardy still thought preventing Blago-politics was a more pressing issue than his previously firm stance against gay marriage?

Why isn't Dean Scontras screeching bloody murder over THIS?

Okay, so what other timely bills are being suggested? Try these- and brace yourself:

Rep. Jon Hinck, D-Portland, wants to restore the right of all people to dry their clothes outside.

He's sponsored a bill that would prohibit housing developments or building managers from adopting rules to prevent residents from putting up clotheslines or other equipment used to dry clothes outside.

"Harvesting solar energy involves both newer technologies, like solar panels, and basic, simple and ancient tools, like clotheslines," Hinck said. "Regardless, no one should block the right to use and enjoy our place in the sun."

Okay, stop giggling- this is earth-shattering serious stuff here!

What else have we got?

Rep. Jane Crosby Giles, R-Belfast, has submitted a bill to license commercial painters.

Anyone who paints the exterior or interior of buildings for money would need a license, and would be required to carry commercial liability insurance and workers' compensation.

Wait a minute. Are you kidding- Clotheslines and Painters??? WTF???

Again, why isn't Scontras sh*tting kittens over these??

Is there anything ELSE going on in Augusta?

The full Legislature is expected to vote on the supplemental budget, which is designed to cover a $140 million revenue shortfall in the budget year that ends June 30.

Gee, maybe we wouldn't have such a fucking big shortfall if we were using such a broken system of accounting. I mean, just how BADLY broken an abacus are they using to make a $22 million fuck-up???

I seem to remember reading this article about how much monies are generated by same-sex marriages. So I may be from and live in Maine, but even I can tell the difference between a snowball and a "snow job."

And here come the reactionaries...
Thanks, Louise. Funny you should post this; one of the comment at the Honolulu Advertiser site on the civil unions bill story was "Why are the legislators dealing with THIS when we have SERIOUS problems?"

This is homework I must do. Thanks for the notes. YOU RULE!

Just strawmen arguments
but boy, opponents do put up ALOT of them! All just diversionary tactics to hide their own personal and very ugly truths of hatred and bigotry.

They don't really give a damn about "marriages" -otherwise, they would be wringing their hands every time a couple divorced, every time there were a case of domestic violence or adultery.

I've never heard word freaking ONE demanding that someone who has abused a spouse or committed adultery be stripped of their marital status and/or never be allowed to be legally married again, have you?

It's "all about the ick"- I figured that out when my grief therapist and I discussed the hypocracy of the "Hate the sin, but love the sinner" stance.

The trick is to stay logical and display these stories, ideas and those who oppose same sex marriage for what they really are- but to the voters.

What we all need to do is what we're already doing- to write about what is AND isn't working in each state. From that process, we can all learn and affect real change- and get closer to a day when ALL states have full equal marriages.

(Hey, I can write w/o getting reactionary and stupid, but it's not as much fun!) ;)

Keori, feel free to email me
as you engage the arguments against your CU bill.

While we boast one of the only all-volunteer state legislatures left in the US--which means we have only as many laws as there is an interest group to advocate for--and are proud to limit their meetings to 60 days in a long year, there are few new ideas in state capitols.

States that are going to be hearing the same stuff in the coming 90 days include Maine, Hawaii, New Mexico and perhaps NH, NJ and NY.

But wait, there's more!

The Devil is in the Details....
Thanks for the Details.....the political is personal.  There is a real person, real people out there trying to keep some of us second class citizens..   It doesn't happen in a vaccum (think Diaz of New York State Senate).

Wait do I have this right
"We will stall and drag out this issue for as long as possible, because just passing it right away will consume valuable legislative cycles"?

nice to know
they'll refuse to do a referendum if the law passes since a referendum campaign would spend buckets of the money they pretend to care about. ;)

Anyone have that MASS study?
Showing how much better their economy is in comparison to say MAINE since they have had Marriage Equality?

Start with the CA study

Here in Chicago
Our Clerk has been arguing for years that gay marriage would be a boon to the economy.  Licenses are $80 a pop, then there's all the money to be made by caterers, florists and others in the industry.

Quibble
It's JOHN Tardy, not Josh Tardy.

Nope
Joshua Tardy. Reuters got it wrong...

[ Parent ]
Tardy's own website
here.

You created a screen name today just for that?? Really?

A Proud Maineah against gay marriage
and yes, I am also an out lesbian in a long term relationship.

The kicker, I'm also trans, and so is my partner of some years.

And I defy you to give me a compelling reason to empower hatred of trans women by the LGB.

United Republican interests????
Oh, they mean the almighty dollar.  Gay or straight, that's the one thing that unites all Republicans over all other interests...MONEY!

Also, it's ironic that NOW they care about focusing on the economy!
Seems it didn't matter as long as they could put forth their anti-gay measures.

How many Mormons in Maine, anyway?
Because sure enough, "The Republican Project" includes Mormons like Miriam Conners of Maine who once again are lining up to lead the charge against marriage equality ... Miriam's bio is up on the RP site:

Sorry, but it isn't just Republicans - Obama supporters make the same argument
Go over to Huffington Post and read the threads about Obama and Rick Warren.

"We have more important things to do" is the exact argument used by the Obama kool-aid drinkers who have been attacking gays and allies for being selfish, self-centered, and having temper-tantrums when we have "real problems" to deal with.

The hottest places in hell are reserved for those who, in time of great moral crisis, maintain their neutrality. -- John F. Kennedy (inspired by Dante's Inferno)

Just goes to show you how deadly that argument is...
it comes back to bite people in the ass when they least expect it, or can afford it.
